take them to places where you can take recycled coke cans. My family (of three) spent five years saving coke cans, and we got $17.00 for them.

I eat Hersheys in the states, but I literally threw out five hershey bars when I got off the plane this year in E”Y.

in reply to: Heimish: What Does it Mean to You? #929219

I used the term on motzei shabbos when I was talking to my best friend about the environment I live in now/ will live in next year. “I don’t anticipate living in a heimishe environment next year because the rare bais yaakov girl who does what I plan on doing typically lives at home while doing it. Also my seminary isn’t so heimishe either, I have to go out every motzei shabbos in order to get pizza with the right hechsher.”

I know that shaoul was appointed King by Hashem/ Shmuel, and Shmuel supervised him. Then Shaoul abused his power so David was coronated king, and at the beginning they were both kings at the same time and then something happened so Shaoul gave up his kingsship (?) and after David die, Shlomo became king, but what seforim should I look those up in?

in reply to: 3-4 Minute Dvar Torah on Malchus #928604

meaning that I should make David and shlomo sound victorious? that could work.

If moving is an option, public schools in the northern suburbs of chicago pay very well, and you could just commute from WRP, most of the public schools in the north shore have hebrew language classes, some taught by frum teachers/ otherwise Israelis, so being a religious Jew is more easily understood (plus many baalei teshuva start keeping shabbos when they are in a public high school… so they have seen girls in skirts before. Plus there are many different schools in chicago to choose from.

in reply to: 3-4 Minute Dvar Torah on Malchus #928602

    Either one will work.

in reply to: Keser Chaya 2013/14- INFO PLEASE!!! #928583

On one hand, going to a school where you do not know anyone can be good, on the other hand, it makes it harder to make friends. I personally think that when deciding which school to go to, you need to consider the hashkafa, and MAYBE the hashkafos of the girls at your school who are going, but you don’t really need to think about anyone from any other school. I have met a bunch of girls from Keser Chaya this year, there are 34 girls this year, they love it, they are solid, frum, bais yaakov girls, I spoke to the menaheles because I wanted to switch there (I checked into 15 schools across the spectrum before finding the one I am currently at…) and she said that the school is very academic. She used to be the principal of Lahav, so maybe ask some Lahav girls from 2 years ago about what the hashkafos of the school was like at the time.

Lashon Hora leads us all to a deadly destination.

in reply to: InShidduchim.com: Is That the Jewish Way? #1216401

I feel like we need to have more dates these days because things are a lot more complicated when it comes to shidduch dating, especially with things like the economic crisis, more genetic diseases (or at least, there is better testing), there are more seminaries these days than before, so there are enough seminaries to match a girl’s specific hashkafa (most of the time…) and stuff like that. Plus the non-Jewish media and society can have quite a bit of influence over us as well.

in reply to: Ateres vs Seminar ;) #932943

Ateres has stricter rules, like not being allowed in the Tachana Hamerkazit (central bus station), Malcha Mall, Ben Yehuda, and some other places after dark, so girls who go to Ateres, will frequently be found hanging out in Geula. Girls who go to Ateres are allowed to go to Ben Yehuda during the day, but I highly doubt that happens very often because they have classes. They have a very strict policy regarding attendance, where you can only miss up to one week of any class, and if you miss on friday, it counts as a double absence.

I know seminar girls are not allowed on Ben Yehuda at all, but they are allowed in other places after dark. I do not know their attendance policy.

By the way, If anyone actually went to these seminaries, feel free to correct me if I am wrong. I feel like most schools (and this was for sure my experience with the first seminary I was at), do not necessarily tell you all the rules until you get there.

    This is pretty intense.

in reply to: Ateres vs Seminar ;) #932939

I know a lot of girl in Seminar who live in New York, but they are not jappy at all. They are volunteers for Oorah and do kiruv. My friends who go there always have a ton of homework, but its not so much that they do not have time to hang out, we just hang out more often in their dorm than in other places. They are not allowed to go to Ben Yehuda at all, and have a 10:15 curfew on week nights and 10:30 on motzei shabbos, but they are very chill about giving extended curfew. They are all very nice, solid by girls.

in reply to: Dealing with Work-Related Stress #929405

First, try taking a few deep breaths. If you know anyone who is an occupational therapist, they probably learned a specific technique for deep breathing when they were in school. Try talking to them.

Its great that you plan on seeing a social worker. Try asking them about some relaxation techniques, you may even need relaxation therapy as well.

    I hope that helps!

in reply to: Ateres vs Seminar ;) #932937

I have heard that the classes at Ateres are tracked. The highest level is expected to prepare meforshim independently (I know because I had an interview with Rabbi Belsky a few months ago when I was looking into schools to switch to). When I was there, a lot of girls came up to me to get to know me. I was rejected because of my background, but I do have to admit that it is an amazing school – just not for me.

My best friend goes to seminar, and she loves it! I have spent quite a bit of time this year hanging out in their dorms with her and I have met tons of other seminar girls as well, they are all very nice girls with great middos.

in reply to: How Much Money Does the Israeli Government Give to Kollel Families? #927211

I have been doing some research on salary for sherut leumi for the past few days, and a typical assignment for a bat sherut pays 800-900 his a month, with that money, she is responsible for providing herself with; 3 meals a day, and all necessities, buses are free. Other than the free buses, that is very close to the same amount. I think it is about the same amount of money as soldiers in the idf get paid as well. So… I guess that the Israeli government does indeed consider learning in Kollel to be a form of National service!

in reply to: I'm bored! #927058

There are so many things you can do! I like doing chessed in nursing homes in the states, I am planning on doing sherut leumi next year so that I can spend a year focusing on doing chessed. I am hoping to be able to apply to a chareidi special ed gan, the only potential problem is that I am not fluent in Hebrew yet.

You can also; sort out clothes in a gemach, go grocery shopping for someone who is homebound ( I am not saying pay for the groceries, but just don’t charge that person for delivery), bikkur cholim, medical clowning, chessed babysitting, offer to babysit children whose parents cannot afford to pay for a babysitter for one hour a week so that the parents can get some respite (even if to go grocery shopping/ to parent teacher conferences), again, helping out in a nursing home, friendship circle, drive people to places they are doing chessed at, stock a food pantry, tutor a child in a subject you are good at whose parents cannot afford tutoring… I hope these ideas help.

in reply to: I'm bored! #927052

    do chessed!

in reply to: How Much Money Does the Israeli Government Give to Kollel Families? #927210

I am a bit chareidi, and I am planning on doing national service next year. I actually requested to work in a chareidi environment, so hopefully, I will have an interview at a Chareidi Gan for girls with mild developmental delays. If you are saying that Chareidim don’t serve, keep in mind that this goes to show you that Chareidim don’t promote doing national service, yet they are open to accepting girls who are doing national service for them (which, I think is an oxymoron, plus most of the girls that apply to that gan might not even be chareidi). I was actually shocked, like mamash shocked, when I heard that chareidi special ed fans accept bnot sherut.

    Was there a trial yet?

    Exactly my point.

I am so angered by this video that I would have wanted to give her the death penalty, which is why I would never be a judge. I have an internet filter, so I only got to see 2 minutes and seven seconds of it.

I am still in the process of searching for a doctor who is willing to fill out all the paperwork to refer me to a specialist. I have to check in with a friend of mine who said her parent’s might know someone.

Anyway, I had an amazing start to my day! I went to a sherut leumi expo, and things with that are moving even quicker than I can keep track of them. The only thing is that at 12:20 Israel time, my stomach started having a ton of pain. I stayed for the last ten minutes of class, but even meeting with the therapist for a half hour didn’t change the pain situation. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend my afternoon classes 🙁

in reply to: Sherut Leumi… I don't know what to do #926108

That makes sense, that is why I would more likely be placed in a modern orthodox area due to language barrier, the apartment I could end up living in in Efrat is unique because it is reserved for anglos.

in reply to: Sherut Leumi… I don't know what to do #926106

The problem with agudah is that after speaking to them today, they said I would have to be fluent in Hebrew by may in order to work in a chareidi special ed gan Bat ami on the other hand, I mean, they do have places in Bnei Brak I could work at. I spoke to someone tonight and there is an expo on wednesday I will probably get more info about it tomorrow. The coordinator was thinking I could do it in Efrat… the conversation was a bit confusing because today has been a very hectic day for me on an emotional level with all this sherut leumi calling. I think it would be nice to arrange to work in Bnei Brak if possible, provided that they have English speaking places…

in reply to: Sherut Leumi… I don't know what to do #926104

Also, since a bunch of people are split on pushing me to do sherut leumi next year verses going to seminary, I was told that I might be able to work in a Chareidi special education gan somewhere in Yerushaliyim if I am fluent in Hebrew by May (meaning I have to be able to have my interview completely in Hebrew in May), anyone have any tips on how to become fluent in such a short amount of time? I am already hiring an ulpan teacher.

Also, I am not going back to America for pesach, I know someone who is going to my hometown to visit family from E”Y on Pesach, and they said that they would bring me anything that I needed. Believe me, my family is not wealthy at all. Also, the director of my program is convincing my mom to have me do sherut leumi next year, so I don’t know when the next time I would be going back to America would be. (Feel free to revive any old threads that you would like).

For sure it would be tax deductible if you do not win, I would say that they probably give you a tax deductible receipt after you enter and donate the amount of money you donate.

in reply to: Help Choosing New Cell Phone #927522

you can unlock the phone yourself through certain services for about $25. That is how i unlocked my smartphone before coming to E”Y.

Take a perek of tehillim that you want the chasson and kallah to emulate and write a hashkafic dvar Torah on it with a lesson that applies then and applies now and in the future. That is what I would do.
