Um, did anyone notice that the Mother’s Day discussion has become the Volvie/Wolf Hashkafa debate? Can we get this back on topic or close this thread? Maybe they want to start a new one to discuss this more?
Regarding Mother’s/Father’s Day: someone here said it best. If your parent is expecting a fuss to be made, then it’s your achrayis to do it! It doesn’t matter what you personally think about the day, it’s about your parent, today and everyday.
(btw, if you have a parent to give to, thank Hashem. Some of us can no longer do the Mother’s day thing 🙁 )

Yogurt should be ok, check the label. Most prepared foods have the allergy alert, so it’s safest to make your own if possible. Probably healthier, too! It’s very hard – my relative has 2 VERY allergic kids, so I know what it’s like.
For yoyo:
Non-Gebrocks Blondies
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup oil
4 eggs
3 vanilla sugars or 3 t. vanilla
1 cup potato starch
3 t. baking powder
1 bag chocolate chips (you could leave these out if you’re worried about allergies)
Beat everything together except chocolate chips. Stir in chips. Pour into 9×13 greased pan. Bake at 350 for 50-60 min.
We used 1/2 c. applesauce and 1/2 cup oil, to cut the fat, and the chocolate chips fell to the bottom. Still yummy, not as pretty.

Just an idea – many girls are home now from sem, and full of their thoughts and feelings. Find a few from your chosen sems to hear what they’re really like, get ideas and tips, etc. In the summer, many girls go off to jobs, camps, the country, so ask them now!

Regarding appropriate screen names, no offence, but I am disturbed by the choice of “bombmaniac”. Perhaps it has a different meaning than the obvious?
To Working, re: the crock pot bag liners, it’s important to lift up the top edge of the bag so it is not in contact with the hot crockpot, esp. when it’s on high. You may be able to fold it down when it’s on low/warm. That may be why it melted.
My friend was concerned about the chemicals in the plastic leaching into the food for so many hours, so she wets some parchment paper, and lines the crock with that. I did that for a few weeks, but it always leaked somewhat, and the mess wasn’t worth it to me. So, I went back to the bags. (I consider it a “sholom bayis” solution bec. I used to ask my hubby to clean it, and he didn’t want to, so..)
For warts on the fingers or toes, which stick out, Duct Tape is the best treatment I’ve found. It’s even cheap and non-chemical. Wrap a piece, ripped to the width you need, around the finger. That’s it! Change it once a week. Depending on how long you’ve had it, it will go away in 2-?? weeks.
Plantar warts (on the sole of the foot) are a different story. Since they grow UP, into the foot, duct tape doesn’t help. If it’s newish, an OTC cure may help, but likely you’ll need to see a dermatologist for Liquid Nitrogen. The kind that goes on with a Q-Tip is not as strong as the kind that’s sprayed on, so you may need to keep trying. Warning: it HURTS! during the application, and for hours and/or days after. However, it does usually work after 1-2 treatments.
My doctor said it’s important to treat warts ASAP, bec. they go away faster if they’re newer, but more impotantly, bec. they “shed virus” wherever you go, to other parts of your body and to other people! Any tiny microscopic cut is a potential entry for the virus.

I wash them in a delicate, cold, dark cycle, remove right away, then let dry on something round. A shaitel head is good. My friend has a plastic “cage” thing for washing baseball caps in the dishwasher, so she puts it on top of that to dry.
I want to share a beautiful thought I heard several years ago, which has given me Chizuk often, especilly considering the circumstances that it was said:
The levaya was for a wonderful Neshama, a teen who died after a car accident. Her teenage brother spoke at the heartrending levaya, and he took a few moments to address the kahal. He thanked everyone for all their Tefillos, Kabalos, help and support over the few days she was in a coma, then said: Don’t think for one minute that ANY of it was wasted! Hashem heard every word, collected every Mitzvah, every thought. Although we didn’t get the answer we had hoped for, you can be sure those Tefillos and Mitzvos will be stored in Shamayim and help someone else. (this is how I remember it)
This was such a nechama then, especially as it was said by her tear-choked brother.

For an “out of country” experience, Toronto has a new seminary, with dorm, that I hear is having a great year!
My friend’s new husband of 2 weeks had to go out of town for the day. While eating lunch at the local Kosher Spot, he got to talking with a friendly, older guy. After a while, the man said, “I think I have a girl for you…” The Chosson replied, “OK, tell me about her… Oh, wait, I got married!” Luckily, my friend found the story funny too, and they’re still married 15+ years later! (in his defence, the husband said since he had been dating for many years, this was his “reflex”)

I just felt I had to add my “2 cents” here. People, there is no one derech for Hashkafic issues like this. Turning on a light on Shabbos is a matter of Halacha, and everyone agrees it’s ossur. But this? It really comes down to sensitivities and the general mahalach of you and your chosen community. Some have no problem with it, and I think that should be fine for them. If you are uncomfortable, then don’t. ASK!
I think one point of having children/not having children yet is that the kids are a major distraction as the families are busy taking care of them, interacting with them, etc.
I remember that in sem, I sometimes went to a shana rishona couple, where the man was quite “shmoozy”, and I felt uncomfortable. I didn’t want to chat so much with him, but that meant jumping up and follwing the wife everytime she went into the kitchen! I always went with a friend, but still…
Keep in mind that there are so many other people out there that need invitations, either because they’re lonely, for kiruv, etc. Invite them!
The absolute best way to enjoy the falls up close is from the American side, on Goat Island. It’s a beautiful state park, very relaxed, beautiful nature, walking trails right by and above the falls, the “Three Sisters” islands – you can walk across bridges right over the rapids. The Canadian side is very commercial, very busy… this is much nicer, esp. on Chol Hamoed. Take a mini BBQ and a mini Sukkah and enjoy!! I’ve done the Tunnels, and the Cave of the Winds there is way better. You’re mamash up against the Falls! One tip: take a change of clothes, from the waist down, for everyone. You get these cool sandals, and a plastic poncho, but you still get soaked! (PS.If you’re going from the Canadian side, don’t forget your passports!)

where did that list of fruit trees come from? I’m assuming that people signed up; but I don’t recall seeing any sort of notice in the newspapers or online. it’s very cool (and a sign of the times) that Misaskim did this google hook-up to easily find the trees!
I just hope that we get to say it this year. Today is 20 Nissan, and all we have up here in Canada are tiny buds. Can it really only be said in Nissan? what if no local trees have blossomed yet?
it’s wonderful! the level of detail, and the amount of research that went into it, is amazing! my kids love to watch it. there is a video section, where you can watch different Keilim being made (love it when the gold zooms across the wood to cover it!), and then an interactive part where you can move around the Mishkan, zoom in, rotate, etc. you can really get an excellent visual idea of how it was. it is especially nice if you are familliar with the Parsha of Teruma, and the gemaras on it. three of my kids are learning Teruma this year, so I bought it at Chanuka. Definately worth it! Kosher entertainment at its best!
children under 16 need only a birth certificate, until new rules start in June. you can look at the websites for teh border crossings for more info. this only applies to land or sea crossings. flying requires a passport for everyone, even babies.
keep in mind that Sunday is Easter and Monday is Easter Monday.
to those in the NYC area – you’re so lucky!!!! My kids drool over the super-exciting ads for Chol Hamoed extravaganzas. (but are they as wonderful as they look?)

i’m looking for ideas for Seder main course. Something not roasted or baked dry (obviously), and that will be OK in the oven for a long time, but that I can take from earlier to feed the kids. Oh yeah – and non-gebruckts. Any suggestions? thanks!!
some people refer to him as “the heilege rebbe reb meilich”. Chassidim often light candles for yurtzeits of rebbes, as a way to remember them, and to bring a little light in to teh world, as a memory of the “light” we lost when they were niftar. don’t know if they do it on 7 adar (moshe rabeinu’s yurtzeit). (they do keep a candle lit for a whole year after a parent is niftar.)
i have several kids, so the number of kids’ shlach manos can really grow! we tell them they can give to 3 friends to drive to, and several if they walk there. i keep a bowl of little noshes/prizes to give a “something” to those who come who we didn’t prepare for. and i tell my kids “it’s not a package exchange!” (although it sure feels that way sometimes…:))
For my main shaloch monos, i’m doing all one color, it’s alot of fun finding things!
i’m not a squirrel expert, but i’m pretty sure they can handle a pistacio nut, even a toughie. why not try it and let us know?
why not throw them to the squirrels? I’m sure they would enjoy the treat, esp. now with so much snow!!!

I think it’s a “had to be there” kind of thing. A bais yaakov high school, and definately overnight camps, produce a deep feeling of achdus and belonging. (usually)
Yes, there ARE many songs, productions and plays, all of which get many/all involved. So the songs and tha music stay with us, in our hearts (not to be too mushy), as a true Jewish song should. (“A Jewish song of any kind is only precious – if and when – it brings us closer to Hashem” – Abie Rotenberg). But a bigger reason, i think, is that the songs take us back to those teenage years of fun, friends and companionship; the memories are linked with the tunes. So sing and enjoy! (even 20 years later!)
“we will keep…as we enjoy and we experience, a meaningful weekend with lessons so deep.” Remember the kumzitz at the Cinesphere? and how COLD it was! Amazing how we packed 600 girls into that gym on Thursday night. The school has another wing now.

why do you want to know about Convention? are you planning one? I’m sure it was wonderful/amazing/fantastic like always.
I think any negative comments would be Loshon hara, as they are unproductive unless addressed to the principals/heads, who all worked VERY VERY hard!
Convention is truly an inspiring, amazing, unforgettable experience, as girls from all over North America come togther for a weekend (Thurs-Sun) of shiurim, trips, new friendships, presentations, kumzitz, fun, discussions, schmoozes, etc!!! It is especially special for girls from small towns, who don’t often get to be with so many frum girls. The entire hosting school works together to plan this. countless hours go onto it, as talents not used in the classroom are brought out. Girls make friends with those in other classes/grades that they may not really had anything to do with otherwise. It is the best!!!!
(BTW, my convention was several conventions ago!)

“Rabbi Eliyahu Falk is an internationally renowed expert in matters of Halacha”, in Gateshead. He published a very big sefer on tzinus, including any topic you can imagine and more, called “Oz V’Hadar Levusha: Modesty, an Adornment for Life”. It is pretty much THE sefer for tzinus. (He is quite machmir, though.)
Joseph’s tip is great! maybe you could put it at the top of the CR page for everyone to see.
what does “drudge” mean in the title of the thread?
In R. Falk’s sefer on tzinus,page 430, it quotes gemara Shabbos 64b “a woman could require cosmetics to improve her appeal to her husband” and Kesubos 52b, “..an adult girl might need it for shidduchim purposes”. HOWEVER, he than goes on for several pages cautioning against excessive, bright, non-tzinusdik applications.

there are lots of news posts, however, people usually only post if they have strong feelings. Most news stories elicit one of these reactions: “How nice” “how sad” “interesting!” ,etc. MOST of which do not inspire further discussion. However, as in the Mumbai situation last week, there were many, many posts of info and feelings.
But you’re right that there’s less overall, since people need/want a place to vent/argue/emphasise. They used to use news items as springboards; now they start a new thread!

I live in toronto, and the bais yaakov here started a clothing drive for E”Y a few years ago. Its really amazing – a girl had the idea and it really took off! all hte students pitch in to sort, pack,etc. maybe you could contact them about doing it in your area. also, there must be second hand stores (jewish or not)to sell your stuff at.
or, donation boxes, jewish or not. so many people could use what you don’t want!
as for nyc, don’t you have gemachs? check your directory.
asdfghjkl – im sorry you had such bad experiences.
however, in general, camp is a very fulfilling and growth-filled time for a child, a place to bring out qualities they might not use during the year at school, not to mention make new friends from places outside their daled amos.
that said, much csre needs to be taken that the camp is the right one for the child. much harm can come, both spiritually and emotionally, if its not. just bec. “rivky” or “chaim” go, doesn’t mean your child should, too.
