@ Little Froggie: Read the biography of Rabbiner Hirsch by E M Klugman; it’s very good.

There are various customs regarding names. In Hungary particularly, children were given a Hebrew name together with a secularised version of the name, at the Jewish naming ceremony, e. g. Shlomo Zalman, Yitzchok Issac. In Germany children were given a Hebrew name at a Jewish ceremony, then a secular name at a “Chaul Kreish”, usually similar to the Hebrew name in addition to the father’s name, e. g. R’ S R Hirsch was called Shimshon at his Bris, and Samson Raphael at his Chaul Kreish. My Chief Rabbi was called Nosson at his Bris, and Nathan Marcus (Adler). The Chaul name is how they were referred to their entire life.

@ oomis: Tziporen is cloves; saffron is Shiboles Nard. Armageddon is named after the apocalyptic battle at Megiddo (in the Book of Zechariah? I’m not exactly sure where).

There are lots of “Kindergarten truths” the Israeli government don’t understand.

in reply to: Question About Punishment After Death #1001426

The Radzyner writes: If someone could choose between having an easy life with Gehenom at the end, or a life of suffering, and Gehenom lessened one tiny degree, he would choose to suffer all his days on this earth rather than the full punishment in the next world.

Home is where the heart is. Home is where you are made to feel welcome, wanted, and needed. Home where you belong.

in reply to: Democracygood or bad? #995081

@ haifagirl: Since when is democracy a contradiction to a republic?

Besides, who says the founding fathers are right?

in reply to: Biased reporting #994429

@ Zushy: The Beeb DID report on the killing of the soldier the day before Israel retaliated. Even when they reported on the retaliation, they specified in the headline “In response to…”

@ If Obama is nuts, probably all the Western leaders – and Putin – are also nuts (oh wait…!). But actually, all politicians should be doing what is best for their own country, not somebody else’s. Obviously they feel the deal is best for their countries. However, they will now have no right to complain if Israel, concerned for itself, attack Iran against the terms of the agreement.

@WIY: No, I attended Chareidi schools. I apologise if that wasn’t clear. We did learn Chumash, Mishna, Gemorah, and Halocha, but we never heard even the word Hashkofah.

@ Israeli Chutznik: Many years ago, I found the BBC pathetically biased against Israel. But in recent years it seems to have become much more impartial.

@ Yserbius: I would also expect the Palestinian media to be biased against Israel. It’s the international media, who are neither Jewish nor Arab, which we expect to be unbiased.

@ on the ball: Didn’t Churchill say, “Democracy is the worst form of government, apart from all the others”?

in reply to: Proper hashkafa about Mandela #994613

@Popa: Accounts of Jews who knew him/worked with him; Israeli political leaders.

@Privileged: True, and although I personally don’t support violence even in a just cause, there are many who do ( EDITED .

In any case, it was only after the apartheid government started massacring unarmed protesters that Mandela felt the ANC had no choice but to use force.

in reply to: Proper hashkafa about Mandela #994606

@Popa: The operative words here are “shortly after being released from prison”. This was before he was able to fully enter the world of international politics. More important was his attitude towards Jews and Israel as an internationally respected leader, and by all accounts he was quite positive at that time.

in reply to: Proper hashkafa about Mandela #994600

@Popa: Why do you think he supported the killing of Jews? (I assume you’re Jewish)

    @oot: Ever heard of politics?

in reply to: Proper hashkafa about Mandela #994596

This is my first ever post here, but this is important.

I am not South African, but Mandela was a great man, to whom many owe their liberty and human dignity. He was not anti-Israel – if that would be important to anybody – but someone who dedicated his life to make this world a better place.

He deserves the greatest of honour, not petty racism.
