September 24, 2012 12:18 pm at 12:18 pm in reply to: please pass along; cars being TOWED from toys r us parking lot!! #1017333ShrekParticipant
The same problem at Rite Aid in Flatbush on Nostrand. If they see you leave the premises with your car in their parking lot you will be towed. Many ppl park & buy at Rite Aid, then run across to the cleaners. Don’t do it–you run the risk of being towed. The tow truck guys sit there & when they see you come back with the dry cleaning bags they hook up your car.
September 24, 2012 12:12 pm at 12:12 pm in reply to: Help! Book Dilemma — Appropriate or not? #906413ShrekParticipant“A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” by Betty Smith.
John Steinbeck’s “The Pearl” “The Red Pony” “Of Mice and Men”.
Have you considered short stories? O. Henry, Shirley Jackson, etc.
ShrekParticipantI really don’t like the fact that a number of these tzedakah callers act like they know you in order to get you to the phone. “Hi, it’s Sarah calling, can I speak to Mr. or Mrs. Shrek?” so Shrek Jr. calls me to the phone and says “it’s Sarah, she wants to talk to you”…so I interrupt whatever I was doing to take the call and “GOTCHA”.
July 24, 2012 2:31 am at 2:31 am in reply to: Rav Yisroel Lau will be the guest speaker at the siyum Hashas #887716ShrekParticipantimagine of Moshiach comes tomorrow and he is a religious Zionist…
July 24, 2012 2:23 am at 2:23 am in reply to: Breaking! Sanz-Klausenberg rebbi to attend Siyum Hashas #887141ShrekParticipantit would be nice if the siyum hashas could be a display of achdus. sigh.
ShrekParticipantI make it very clear to the caller that I will NOT make a monetary committment on the phone & that if the organization wants to send an envelope in the mail that is fine. I have found that after a while the organization stops calling.
the recorded announcements for chinese auctions and raffles etc. that go on forever are a different problem…I wonder what to do to stop those.
ShrekParticipantthe easiest and neatest way to mash tuna is to put it in a plastic bag, close the top, and squish it.
a hammer is also helpful.
ShrekParticipantmy skin color is kind of greenish. and I feel like an ogre, grumpy much of the time.
oh, and I felt it was important to have a yiddish name even in cyber-space.
ShrekParticipantI am quitting chometz cold turkey. I’ll let you know how that goes.
ShrekParticipantsell it with your chometz. even if you don’t sell “real” chometz you can sell it. same goes for all those cute projects the little kiddies make with pasta. (why do they do that? anyone know?)
March 27, 2012 9:23 pm at 9:23 pm in reply to: Why Are Divorces Usually Initiated by the Wife? #870671ShrekParticipantdivorces are usually initiated by the wife?
probably because they have husbands.
ShrekParticipantgood one, DY!
ShrekParticipantAvoid “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” like the plague if you are concerned about pritzus. I’m told that the husband calls his wife “dear” in the book.
ShrekParticipantI’ve met many kidswho are off the derech, and I’ve never heard one say that hearing their parents say “dear” to one another was what pushed them away.
And I doubt anyone ever went OTD from reading Mr. Popper’s Penguins, or any of the other books mentioned in this thread.
ShrekParticipantItche, I hope you meant your comment in the nicest possible way, whatever that could possibly be.
ShrekParticipantif you are a sensitive person, you will feel the other person’s pain when you say “no”. But what’s the alternative? Getting married to someone so you don’t hurt their feelings?!?
maybe this relationship will help you be more clear for the future about what really matters to you. It’s good you were honest with yourself.
ShrekParticipantDick Francis is pretty good. His mysteries center around the horse-racing world, so that might be objectionable to some. They are not “squeaky clean” but no graphic pritzus.
ShrekParticipantdear dear dear dear dear dear dear dear
ooh, I am SO rebellious. call me a kid-at-risk.
dear dear dear dear dear dear dear dear
February 29, 2012 2:03 am at 2:03 am in reply to: Gedolei Poskim to Ask Very Serious Shailos #856653ShrekParticipantRav Dovid Cohen. He can be reached by phone during certain hours.
ShrekParticipantif you’d eat in their house, I’d think you could eat what they send you.
February 29, 2012 1:59 am at 1:59 am in reply to: Ten Things Your Child's Counselor Wishes You Knew #953429ShrekParticipantalso, if your child is a bedwetter…you are better off being up-front about it. The (sleepaway) counselor is going to figure that out pretty quickly anyways.
ShrekParticipantanything home-made. I can buy junk food any time, but home-made treat are a different story.
and has anyone noticed–no one gives hamentaschen anymorein mishloach manos! why is that? very disappointing!
ShrekParticipantmy 5 year old will come to your house to cut hair, no charge. He has loads of experience.
ShrekParticipantthanks for all the suggestions!
maybe I should stay in my swamp 😉
ShrekParticipantoh boy. this is a lot more complicated than I would’ve thought.
ShrekParticipanthotels that have hundreds of frum people for yom tov–everyone just leaves their doors unlocked? day and night? does not sound safe at all.
ShrekParticipantPBA, I bet you are not the first and won’t be the last frum person to experience this.
Mom12, if you want to leave the hotel you can leave the key at the front desk. Although you may need to leave through a window since the front doors are often activated electronically.
All these hotels that advertise for Pesach–what do they do? anyone know? come on, someone out there has been to a hotel for yom tov!
ShrekParticipantthere are ways of getting around the problem, but if I go away for Shabbos I’d rather just avoid the whole issue if possible.
ShrekParticipantable-bodied men should go out and look for jobs instead of knocking on doors for tzedakah.
And if you weren’t given the tools to earn a living, do your kids a favor and don’t doom them to the same fate.
ShrekParticipantadams: agree totally. talking nicely goes a lot further in the short-run and long-run. if you want to get people to go along with halacha, chumra, whatever, acting like a mentsch is always the way to go.
BTW, I think “sheirutim” means bathroom.
ShrekParticipantwhen did this “chumra” begin?
I visited Israel years ago and yes, I rode the #1 bus and the #2 bus through Geulah and Meah Shearim. Chareidi men & women generally arranged themselves so that they did not sit next to each other, but no one made a fuss about who sat where.
Health:
I’ve been on the B11 bus in Brooklyn which runs through Boro Park & is utilized by many frum men and women & I have never seen anyone insist that the seating had to be arranged to keep women and men apart.
What’s next? I’m not allowed to eat food on the bus if it doesn’t meet your particular standards for kashrus?
Your personal chumrah is YOUR issue. No one else is required to sacrifice for it.
ShrekParticipantthere are plenty of “chareidi” neighborhoods in Brooklyn where men and women ride buses. No one makes a fuss about the fact that men and women aren’t separated from each other. You know why? Because if a man or woman got up and started insisting on moving people around to suit their religious sensitivities, the driver would toss them off the bus. As it should be. You have personal seating preferences, fine. On your own bus or in your own car or in your house you can segregate to your heart’s content. But a public bus does not need to adjust because you decided to be more religious that G-d himself.
ShrekParticipantthey don’t wear tight clothes, so how can anyone tell if horses are overweight?
ShrekParticipantMishpacha was banned? Fine, so I’ll read Newsweek.
ShrekParticipantProbably a reporter for a major newspaper, who wants to write an article.
I’ve often wondered what a “non-member of the tribe” would make of some of the CR postings.
Behave, everyone! You never know who could be lurking here.
ShrekParticipant10,000 calories, give or take 1,000 (depends on which sauces you put on)
ShrekParticipantyou an wear any shirt you want as long as it’s white.
ShrekParticipantmaybe if girls didn’t wear uniforms to school, they would be forced to examine how they dress.
ShrekParticipantFlatbush is moving to the “right”. Any yeshiva that wants to stay in business needs to meet the needs of its community. If the community wants white shirt yeshivas and not colored shirt yeshivas, the yeshiva needs to accommodate or become marginalized. Sad, but true.
ShrekParticipanta mamin:
how can you say that women should exercise? Has anyone asked a shaila to a Gadol about this? Has anyone gotten a hechsher for any particular type of exercise? Has a Gadol paskened the proper attire for women who wish to exercise? The proper amount of time women should spend on this activity?
Until there is a clear psak on this issue I don’t know how you can say this so definitively. Even if you consider it a medical/health issue, surely one must ask a Rav just as one would ask a Rav before consuming medicine that might not be kosher.
ShrekParticipantI suggest that women only do exercises that have a clear mesorah in Yiddishkeit. Sarah Imaeinu for sure did not play tennis or basketball, take zumba or spin classes, go swimming, do aerobics or jumping jacks or other goyish who-knows-what.
She lived to 127 years old just by doing what a proper Jewish woman needs to do. She cooked and cleaned and was a helpmate to her husband. What Jewish woman needs more than that?
ShrekParticipantwhat’s the problem?
if there’s a medical emergency & a woman can be of assistance…she shouldn’t help out?
ShrekParticipantgo visit a couple of the different branches, maybe stay for Shabbos, & see which one feels like a good fit. hatzlocha!
ShrekParticipantdepends on what you mean by bad habits. Rabbi Abraham Twerski says that “marriage is not a hospital”. He is refering to emotional problems, addictions, etc.
ShrekParticipanta king also can’t be a witness. It is considered undignified for him. Perhaps the same applies in the case of women.
ShrekParticipantis there kosher food in Albany? Minyanim?
ShrekParticipantwhat are we supposed to learn from this? That the woman was not as smart as the Rebbe?
ShrekParticipantbecause if you need bobby pins you are probably playing sports, exercising, or doing some other “goyish” activity.
I actually heard a little boy say that he learned in Yeshiva that “wearing bobby pins in your yarmulke is GOYISH”. He didn’t understand why I found that absolutely hysterical.
August 4, 2011 12:42 pm at 12:42 pm in reply to: What is the funnest thing you'll be doing this summer? #795026ShrekParticipantshlepping back and forth to the mountains, fighting traffic every Friday and Sunday. Can’t beat that for entertainment.
ShrekParticipantnot only is Hatzolah incredibly fast, they are very caring. My mother and I both got hurt in a car accident, and the hospital separated us because my mother needed immediate care for a head injury. My injuries were not as serious, so I was left waiting for care in the ER. The Hatzolah member who brought us in waited with me until my father arrived.
I was 10 years old at the time. Imagine how terrified I would have been left on my own, even for a short while!
I am sure that every single family living in NY has called Hatzolah at least once. They are absolutely amazing.
