You have to have a sense of hakaras hatov to our medina which enables us to serve on a jury. Back in europe, times werent so pashut, and the governments hated yiddens involvement with the government, and even persecuted them. baruch Ha-Shem that we live in America, which the Aibeshter made to be a nice liberal government. next time you are in jury duty, open up a gemara, learn a shtikel and realize it could be far worse

Moshe ShmeltzMemberMistama I think its a pela that our youth cannot express themselves in a proper lashon. When I was in school thirty years ago, I first did yeshivah ketana and gedolah to brush up on my learning with the Aibeshter’s help, and then went to Colombia college to learn basic secular knowledge while learning in the Mir in Brooklyn. Now my children are enrolled in Bais Yaakov, and they tell me that the girls shouldnt go to college, because they’ll be married by then to a yungerman learning in a kollel with no parnassa. I dont understand why this derech is looked down upon.

Moshe ShmeltzMember@ Eclipse, I think you need to have a kosher shtar signed with two adim in order for your ‘deal’ with the Aibeshter to be valid. My uncle is Rav Yitzchak Shmeltz from Williamsburg, and I think his Beis Din will be able to provide one to you; I heard such a story from my uncle about making a shtar like this last year for someone who wanted to learn in kollel, and still get a decent parnassa.
