November 23, 2011 10:22 pm at 10:22 pm in reply to: Chafets Chaim Yeshivah Vancouver vs Dallas? #829724showerzingerMember
I was in PTI (the yeshiva in Vancouver) for 3 years of Beis Medrash. I love the city, rabbiem, and go back a few times a year. Are you looking for High School or Beis Medrash?
I also have friends in Dallas, but having never been there myself I can’t really give you a fair judgement of the place.
showerzingerMemberI was in Yeshiva in Vancouver for 3 years and have been back numerous times. It’s a wonderful place! If you have any specific questions feel free ask them cuz I don’t feel like writing a megillah!
showerzingerMemberBSD- Marrying someone 3-4 yrs younger than you is not cradle snatching! Please go look up the definition!
Second of all, who said HASHEM wants to go along with your takana??
showerzingerMemberI have a close friend who went from 0-60 and unfortunately only lasted about a year and a half before falling back into old habits. BUT he still lets me know weeks where he DOES keep Shabbos because he knows there’s something there! I’m just supportive and hope that with time he will gradually get back on track. The danger of “all or nothing” for someone who wasn’t raised frum is real. I have a chavrusa who went more gradually and now is one of the best guys in Yeshiva because he was able to grow at his own pace.
showerzingerMemberBellevue University has one that they offer thru a partnership with Young Israel. It’s part classroom/part online. My sister as well as several friends of mine from Yeshiva have taken it.
showerzingerMember@ItcheSrulik There are mashgichim OUTSIDE OF BROOKLYN! (GASP!) There are Kosher ones in Baltimore,Chicago, and the 5 Towns that I know of – why can’t Lakewood find someone to do it? They don’t have enough Jews for you?!?!
showerzingerMemberACTUALLY “Moshiach Hashem” transalates into “The anointed one OF Hashem”- Referring to “Ben David Avdecha” early in the song. PLEASE learn how to read Hebrew before you make false accusations!
July 18, 2011 3:45 pm at 3:45 pm in reply to: Sleepaway Camps taking advantage of their staff. #787304showerzingerMemberAs a former staff member in a few camps for 8 summers, I feel more than qualified to debate any of the people in the Coffee Room who feel this isn’t highway robbery!
First of all: Why should be penalized for liking your job/it being “fun”? If a guy likes law, or making food,or likes saving peoples lives should we stop paying him?
Second: A certain camp made the mistake, while trying to tell us we need LESS off-days, of breaking down how much kids parents are paying PER day for a camper to be there. Multiply that by 12-15 kids per bunk. Why are staff getting paid peanuts??
Tips are the PARENTS display of hakaras hatov, the camp can’t be yotzei with that!
Also, you kinda have to because what yeshiva is thrilled to hear you were gasp working in the city! The structure with davening and learning IS important so why be penalized for being a good Jew??
Also, have you ever tried to watch 15 teenage boys for 2 months??
showerzingerMemberDroid and Elik- who are calling me an anti-Semite I said that
I SAW instances of Chillul Hashem today and in the past to back up my statement. Second of all, halivai anti-Semitism should be people being disgruntled of Jews taking advantage of a freebie! Somehow to label a fellow Jew pointing something out with the same terminology used for people like Hitler yms”v and other such Sonei Yisroel is DISGUSTING and IMMATURE besides just downright PATHETIC!
showerzingerMemberFirst of all it DOES say it’s limited.Read both the sign on the door and their website.
Unfortunately, it probably is b/c certain Yidden have abused it in the past. I saw certain frum Jews today abusing the privilege and I don’t live in Flatbush.
showerzingerMemberWIY- I’m going to have to agree with zhavasdad here. While Shomer Negiah is important it is a geder to prevent issurei kares, not a chiyuv kares itself. Not even close…
showerzingerMemberWITS and PTI
showerzingerMemberI’m in. Although I don’t know if I truly qualify since I didn’t do the whole 14yr program. But was in two branches an Queens.
showerzingerMemberMy rebbe always said that “a mentch doesn’t drink out of the bottle.” There is a certain refinement to pouring whatever beverage it is (water, soda, beer etc.)into a cup. However, not being “refined” does’t make it “disgusting,” rather just average behavior, and as bochurim (and Yidden I would extrapolate)I assume the goal is to strive to be refined.
showerzingerMemberTrident University International is WASC accredited. Getting my Master’s from there…all online
showerzingerMemberDaas Yochid
Coke is NOT a thirst quencher! Neither is beer! BOTH caffeine and alcohol (which I “believe in”)are diuretics- they dehydrate you by drawing water out of your system.
showerzingerMemberDaas Yochid – what are you talking about????
As for the concern with being able to drive he is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!An average person processes one “drink” (a shot of scotch, glass of wine, one beer)in an hour. In fact he’s need multiple drinks to be over the legal limit of .08
May 22, 2011 3:02 am at 3:02 am in reply to: Why don't jews have dogs? It is clear in the gemara and shulchan aruch that #770357showerzingerMemberGoing to have to agree with PBA who beat me to it…Jews have lotsa kids, tuition, religious obligations, etc. They don’t need a dog to fill that void. Also, there are plenty of Jews I know that have dogs.
showerzingerMemberAccording to Judaism.com the “Deceptions Trilogy” is for adults. Idk what that means in a Jewish novel either.
showerzingerMemberI’m soooo ready to shave!
showerzingerMemberIt’s not the parent’s life – It’s the child’s!
showerzingerMemberVery easy to listen to. Not MO or Chassidishe just Normal Black Hat not overly Yeshivish either. Has TWO books out one on the Parsha and the new called “Stop Surviving Start Living.” Stopped being a high school rebbe to start TBT,(Tiferes Bnei Torah)a learning program for young working/”in school” guys who felt they were losing their kesher with Yeshiva.
showerzingerMemberI spent about a month this past year going regularly for lower back pain after an accident and it did wonders for me!
showerzingerMemberAre they not allowed to eat?? I thought Judaism didn’t have ridiculous rules (like celibacy in Christianity for priests) for its’ leaders! We all see what that leads to…
showerzingerMemberFeif Un- “Some people will say, “But look at people singing Carlebach! They’re so happy and lively!” Well, it’s well documented that drinking alcohol actually causes you to be more depressed than you might already be. Yet when people are drunk, they get very lively too.”
That statement is TOTALLY TWISTED! Alcohol is a DEPRESSANT, which means that it DEPRESSES your central nervous system(causing lack of inhibition, lack of balance, among other things )-NOT YOU!!
Albeit, if someone who was ALREADY clinically depressed drank it may make his depression worse, but that is only b/c he is “letting go” in the wrong way! Usually, dropping inhibitions and burdens makes people HAPPY 🙂
Were Chazal wrong by your logic by saying “Ein Simcha Eleh B’Yayin”?
Was Dovid HaMelech wrong in Tehillim when he said “V’Yayin Yisamach l’vav Enosh?”
WHY would it be a mitzva to drink on Purim if it MADE YOU DEPRESSED??
showerzingerMemberI know FIRST HAND from asking a few of my friends when they were chossonim that the poem that was “on display” was more a text book (albeit handwritten) note, NOT the personal one they wrote to the kallah! In that case what’s the problem?
showerzingerMemberA Freilichen Ein Bein to all!
showerzingerMemberalways here- Not at all intended to be inflammatory or cause loshon hora Just wanna know how people feel about it.
showerzingerMemberSJSinNYC-
“I know members of scholarship committees and unfortunately, families cannot be trusted anymore.”
SO DO I . And I’m saddened that you feel Jews are no longer trustworthy. MAYBE if they didn’t feel so violated by these committees they wouldn’t be so elusive??
“Lets not forget that scholarships are tzedaka and you are supposed to avoid taking tzedaka.”
Funny how these same schools preach that you should go into learning, thereby GUARANTEEING themselves no chance of collecting tuition. And also funny how when it’s Abba/Tatty/Daddy who is taking the Tzedaka to LEARN it’s Ok but for kids chinuch it’s not???
And please note, the specific camps I referenced often run $5,000+ (up to about $8,000).
Wasn’t talking about those. How about the 2-3,000 BEFORE scholarships??
Lets deal with these expenses one at a time:
“Cheap vacation – $500 minimum (including gas, place to stay, attractions).”
Why do not people not deserve a vacation,if not only to stay sane?
“Cleaning help – usually a minimum of $1000/year (not a real necessity unless you have a disability or severe depression or something)”
OR because BOTH parents have to work.PLEASE don’t judge people! Does everyone you know who has cleaning help disabled or severely depressed??? I DOUBT IT
“Kosher food – beans are kosher and cheap. Eggs are cheap. There are many cheaper alternatives to chicken and beef, the most expensive parts of the kosher diet. You can easily save $100 month on your grocery bill if you try.”
The SCHOOLS need your extra $1200 so THEY can serve fleishigs EVERY NIGHT(most yeshivos do)???
“Your attitude shows that Yeshiva tuition is not a priority. How is saving money at the expense of tuition ethical? And you wonder why tuition committees need to grill people?”
My attitude is that IT IS A PRIORITY! Being able to eat supper or have a few days with your kids is not SAVING MONEY! Peopel work to support a family,NOT to pay tuition. Unfortunately, family and sanity don’t matter to some of theses committees as long as they can wring you dry of every last cent you COULD give up!
showerzingerMemberMy brother always jokes about sending his kids to public school and letting Oorah “rescue” them. These committees are absolutely out of control! Even Obama wouldn’t dare be that intrusive!
Obviously, they are trying to catch the yechidim that are trying to slip through the cracks and rip them off…BUT at the expense of everyone else, who as Jews have a chezkas kashrus and lets be honest do you think if they could afford it they would intentionally take away parnassah from fellow Jews??
As for what they consider “luxuries” is just wrong on many levels:
Sleepaway camp is no longer a luxury since THE SCHOOLS say that the kids can’t be “hanging out” for the summer. You can’t have it both ways!
KOSHER FOOD IS EXPENSIVE NEWSFLASH
Not wanting to put your kids on a “fast food diet” that has proven to cause obesity is a valid reason to spend more.
A vacation once a year that people save up for is very important family time (which the schools are so cheap on) and to charge someone full tuition when the vacation is a fraction of the break is just absurd.
showerzingerMemberIn general SEMINARIES ARE CASH COWS so odds of getting a scholarship are slim to none. I know in some cities the Federation will cover your Visa costs if you do some paper work. Also, there is a new seminary that is opening that claims they can give scholarships,so you can suggest that to her as well. Hatzlacha!
February 14, 2011 10:47 pm at 10:47 pm in reply to: to marry a singer or not.. thats the question! #741714showerzingerMemberAihOdMilvado said it best.Aries raised some important points. s2021 is totally off base and Sacrilege i know of one 🙂
showerzingerMemberThat’s probably b/c REAL BRISKER made a hafgana against any store that would carry such disgraceful products!
That’s WORSE than Kosher Subway, which is probably worse than Giluy Arayos,Shfichas Domim and Avoda Zara COMBINED!
I’m joking but I’m sure there are people on here that think like that.
TRY EITHER OF THESE

February 8, 2011 8:56 pm at 8:56 pm in reply to: Is it harder for Frum adults to form new relationships and make close friends? #737908showerzingerMemberreal brisker is REALLY starting to get on mine, and i’m sure other peoples, nerves. His warped view of world, hashkafa, and the world in general is blatant in most of comments. This can stem from two things: Either he A. actually thinks that in which case a dose of reality would be nice OR B. he doesn’t believe a word of what he’s saying and just likes causing machlokes and getting under peoples skin. NEITHER are befitting of a Ben Torah of the caliber he claims he is. BTW NOTHING ASSUR ABOUT HAVING SAME-GENDER FRIENDS, IF anything should be EASIER with Frum Jews b/c the lack of interaction with the other gender!
ANYWAY to get back to the question…The reality is that by and large most people develop their social circle while they are less established and have less things going on their lives. This makes complete sense b/c TIME is a necessary component in any relationship, and as your commitments to a spouse, job, children etc. grow their is less time for socializing. That DOESN’T mean you can’t make friends later in life, but it will be harder b/c everyone already has commitments.
showerzingerMemberA. Usually cheaper or same price for a limo B. Getting a responsible driver is a good thing C. If you don’t want to serve alcohol that’s fine, don’t try and be the Purim Police for every horror story that’s never been verified, there are tens of thousands of bochurim that have a enjoyable and productive Purims. D. If yo would like to give up your vacation/YomTov to go collect for our Mosdos I’m sure plenty will take you. Don’t be so judgemental!
Geshmockster – couldn’t agree with you more!
showerzingerMemberHere’s an interesting question just to stir up the pot:
Could the Maan in the Midbar taste like Subway??
The only problem with fake cheese is MAYBE maaras ayin BUT in a KOSHER establishment that’s not an issue,is it?!?!
THe issur of baasar v’cholov is exactly that, and people that try and be “Frumer than Hashem” are just way overboard. i.e. and I apologie if this is/should be a diff. thread: Can you eat ANIMAL CRACKERS cuz some of the animals are treif?????? I’ve heard of “frummies” taht won’t/sort out the kosher ones! GO FIGURE….
February 3, 2011 11:55 pm at 11:55 pm in reply to: Everyone is "amazing"- how can you tell who really has great Midos? #736595showerzingerMemberI’m going to have to agree with observanteen- NOTHING can truly tell you what someone is REALLY like until you live with them. That’s why ppl.like asking room mates, although it’s not the same relationship so still won’t give you a perfect picture.
You have to daven and obviously try and find out what you can.
showerzingerMemberThere is one in Queens (KGH) on Jewel Ave. as well. With all the issues in the world today, kinda hard to believe it’s the MOST DESPICABLE THING @realicedtea’r
February 2, 2011 3:06 pm at 3:06 pm in reply to: Amazing story with a well known Rosh Yeshiva! #824215showerzingerMemberA RY can’t go to 7-11???? What is wrong with you people? Let’s say he was thirsty?
showerzingerMemberCARMEX all the way!
showerzingerMemberTaanis with a chavrusa. Should be making a siyum before Purim, iy”H 🙂
showerzingerMemberit’s a mishna in megillah not yuma. Anyway, I’ve been to “Ain Bein” Seudos before and much L’chaim’s were had by all!
showerzingerMemberYochie- Anything you can txt/can be causeed by txting can be done/achieved through NUMEROUS online chatting sites etc. PLUS with the other dangers of unfiltered internet, I don’t understand your statement whatsoever.
showerzingerMemberI’m going to have to agree with what many ppl have said so far: If you can’t afford dating, supporting a family is going to be a MAJOR ISSUE
showerzingerMemberpba- But she had Yaakov too!
As a brother who I’m sure is being looked @ the one thing I will say is that just because the sibling is not as “yeshivish” as the girl does not make them a bad person. i.e. just because a girl has brothers that are in college(gasp) and plan on working(gasp) but also daven with a minyan three times a day, have sedorim, wear a hat etc…doesn’t mean you should overlook her.
showerzingerMembernot I- they DO have a Website- http://www.hamodia.com/ and it has been mentioned TWICE already in this thread so why try and deny it??
I find it very hard to believe that all the kollel yungeleit that buy it because R’ Mattisyahu said to are avgeraging $147,000 in income???
showerzingerMemberyogibooboo- WHY? They actually have some point if people actually say something helpful. Whereas threads bashing names based on a misread chazal or random yapping about which type of tie you want to wear are just pointless!
showerzingerMemberI’m with doodle too. JS- First, be dan l’kaf zechus and dont try and guess what ppl are doing in private.Second, I assume you meant “around” not “arouse”(although the slip is quite comical)
showerzingerMembersmartcookie BETTER BE JOKING…otherwise I can’t even begin to understand.
showerzingerMemberalways here-
I am 6’1″ and I have been redt tens of girls that are 5’/5’1″/5’2″. I personally see no problem with marrying someone significantly shorter than me. I know many happy couples with a height disparity and see no reason why “short girls” should be discriminated against. Not everyone can be 5’5″!
