August 28, 2012 5:25 pm at 5:25 pm in reply to: Can you make a siyum if you learned in English? #1017725shmoelMemberSo I can go around mumbling all day “A pen is muktsa on Shabbos”, and I’m mekuyim the mitzva of Talmud Torah at least as well as any Kollel guy?
August 28, 2012 2:54 pm at 2:54 pm in reply to: Interesting: Position of HaRav Eliyahu Meir Bloch ztl on the State of Israel #893235shmoelMemberFeif: You are blind.
shmoelMemberKeeping on light bulbs (especially flurescent) is very inexpensive. The cost, relatively speaking, is a joke.
August 28, 2012 2:18 pm at 2:18 pm in reply to: Where is right and wrong? Morals upside down. #895614shmoelMemberStop the presses!! Haifa girl made a linguistic error!
shmoelMemberIs Yom Kippur the same as Rosh Hashana, as far as no crying is concerned?
August 28, 2012 2:13 am at 2:13 am in reply to: Interesting: Position of HaRav Eliyahu Meir Bloch ztl on the State of Israel #893230shmoelMember…and whether the Zionists.
shmoelMemberChacham Ovadia Yosef shlita encourages yibum over chalitza. (Even though the zionist chief rabbis made a rule against it, that he said is meaningless.) And there are multiple stories of yibum occuring in Eretz Yisroel.
shmoelMemberHuh, popa. We Sefardim need no time machine, as we still practice yibum today.
shmoelMemberBut any brother that wants yibum takes precedence over any that want to do chalitza, correct?
shmoelMemberThe difference in annual cost between leaving a portion of the lights on 24/7 versus leaving them all on, is fairly minimal.
August 27, 2012 7:38 pm at 7:38 pm in reply to: Dr. Phil, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, mom from LKWD #901113shmoelMemberWhat’s a “BT FFB”?
shmoelMemberBecause she’s a nidda if single and an eishes ish (and nidda) if married.
August 27, 2012 6:58 pm at 6:58 pm in reply to: Interesting: Position of HaRav Eliyahu Meir Bloch ztl on the State of Israel #893224shmoelMemberRav Moshe Blau was a leader of the Agudas Yisroel.
shmoelMemberDoes the widow get to choose which brother if they’re multiple — otherwise who chooses? And if one brother wants to marry her while another wants to do chalitza, does the one who wants to marry always prevail? If she doesn’t want to marry him can he still force her to marry him by refusing chalitza?
shmoelMemberJ4J people are also Jewish.
August 27, 2012 2:44 pm at 2:44 pm in reply to: Dr. Phil, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, mom from LKWD #901108shmoelMemberIndeed, they all three are a very bad joke.
shmoelMemberAnd if a conservative rabbi says something we must respect it? Of course not. Just because a rabbi calls himself orthodox does not mean what he says is anything orthodox.
shmoelMemberWhat happened to Rebbetzin Esther Jungreis? She did the RNC invocation in ’04 or ’08.
shmoelMemberSam: Where does the Rambam say people will die after Techiyas Hameisim? I don’t remember that and it makes no sense. If people still die after techiyas hameisim, what’s the whole point of T”H?
shmoelMemberS2: If someone is neither a T”C nor an A”H, where does he fit in on the pecking order of being saved or killed?
shmoelMemberTechiyas Hameisim will occur sometime after Moshiach. Until then people will still die. After techiyas hameisim no one will die anymore.
shmoelMemberIt’s a sick knockoff of Time’s Man of the Year.
shmoelMemberYaakov married two sisters.
shmoelMemberSam2: When shouldn’t the gemora’s svara apply? And even if it doesn’t apply, what right does a godol hador have to kill someone else to save his own life?
shmoelMemberIf a talmid chochom and a plain yid are drowning at the same time and you can only save one, you should save the T”C.
shmoelMemberOkay Sam, fair enough. Modify the above shaila to if the first husband himself, after losing contact with his wife due to war, years later finds out she remarried (thinking he died) and had new children. Should he identify himself to and tell those children they’re mamzeirim?
August 24, 2012 1:24 am at 1:24 am in reply to: Interesting: Position of HaRav Eliyahu Meir Bloch ztl on the State of Israel #893215shmoelMemberMoving to EY to live is in NO WAY indicative of support of zionism or the medina. Its a mitzva to live in EY. And many anti-zionists live in EY and oppose the medina. Including the aforementioned rebbes
shmoelMemberI said I saw piskei teshuva (I forget which) that says the mere having the law puts all gitin in that jurisdiction at risk. Rav Elyashev also said using the current NY get law invalidates the get.
shmoelMemberSam2: Could you be nice enough to summarize how the Gemora and Noda B’Yehuda would address my above shaila? 🙂
August 23, 2012 11:47 pm at 11:47 pm in reply to: Interesting: Position of HaRav Eliyahu Meir Bloch ztl on the State of Israel #893213shmoelMemberSame place as the Brisker Rov. Living in EY everyone holds of. The opponents of zionism have been living in EY LONG before the zionists came around.
August 23, 2012 11:31 pm at 11:31 pm in reply to: Interesting: Position of HaRav Eliyahu Meir Bloch ztl on the State of Israel #893211shmoelMemberThe Belzer and Vizhnitzer Rebbes were and are ardent opponents of zionism, as was the Brisker Rov.
shmoelMemberIf she doesn’t utilize the get law. If she does, it is invalid. Rav Elyashev said so about the current New York Get Law. According to some, it is invalid even if she doesn’t utilize it since he has the fear that she has the option to invoke it if he doesn’t issue a get.
August 23, 2012 11:17 pm at 11:17 pm in reply to: Litvishe Gedolim respecting Chasiddishe Gedolim #894169shmoelMembermdd: So the Chazon Ish held that mizrachi, sefardim and MO are wrong.
shmoelMemberIf a woman remarried under the assumption her first husband was killed, and someone finds out many years later that her first husband was in fact still alive when she remarried, is he obligated (or allowed) to let her children (born from her second husband while the first was still living) know they are mamzeirim?
By not telling them he is allowing the creation of more mamzeirim when these children and grandchildren (indefinitely) marry. On the other hand, perhaps by not telling (and know one knows) they do not carry the halachic status of mamzeirim?
August 23, 2012 10:50 pm at 10:50 pm in reply to: Where to start becoming Jewish when family roots discovered #991067shmoelMemberaurora:
IF it is determined that your mother’s mother’s mother was Jewish (per Jewish Law), then you are considered 100% Jewish without the need for any conversion.
August 23, 2012 3:22 pm at 3:22 pm in reply to: Why was the National Anthem or G-D Bless Ameirica not sung by Siyum Hashas? #893876shmoelMemberRav Shteinman is completely opposed to IDF service.
shmoelMemberBaruch Hashem the Torah community has only a very small abuse (physical or psychological) problem, as a relative comparison to the general population – where the shkotzim are often drunk, beat their wives, abuse drugs and gambling, etc and then let it out on their wife when they come home in an enraged stupor.
Although, it must be added that as low as the occurence in our communities is, even one case is one case too many.
shmoelMemberWhen did moski go back to her dorm? I thought the new semester starts in September.
shmoelMemberMost marriage therapists would be more properly described as Divorce Therapists, as that is the most common end of such therapy. That is what they push for and that is what they are paid for. The moral is to stay far far away from them, unless a rov who investigated the therapist determined he does not push for divorce.
A rov should be a families (who wants to stay as a family) first choice.
shmoelMemberSheidim or Dibbuks. They’re both around, but they’re different things.
shmoelMemberSo the shittos of Avi Weiss is the same eilu veilu as those of Rabbi Schachter?
shmoelMemberI suggested that in the tremendous zchus of the Yidden of York being moser nefesh their lives, en masse, rather than shmad, that New York became the great Makom Torah and Klal Yisroel it is.
shmoelMember2) That night midnight England and its terrotories converted from the Julian to the Greogiran calendar, skipping 10 days.
3) Outerbridge is named after some General (or something.)
4) Wright brothers.
8) Washington, DC. (Unless that is a trick question. It’s way too simple.)
11) Ears. (Same point as 8.)
13) Neil Armstrong.
shmoelMemberThe reason New York is such a humongeous Makon Totah with the largest Jewish community of chul, is because of the tremendous moser nefesh of the Yidden of York.
August 13, 2012 6:11 pm at 6:11 pm in reply to: Why was the National Anthem or G-D Bless Ameirica not sung by Siyum Hashas? #893749shmoelMemberNo gedolim were in favor of Jewish sovereignty prior to ’48.
shmoelMemberAPY is answering the question the OP asked in the title.
