@ gabi – are you referring to how most of the world view Jews? That we’re just a bunch of savages? That’s a very commonly held view, and I will fight against it.

If you’re referring to Africans, can I remind you that if you live in Brooklyn, then you are in the county with the largest African-American population in the USA (I think). This is a public forum, and you don’t know who will read this page, or how they will interpret it. Please try to consider how your neighbors will interpret your statements.

Kony 2012 sounds like a bit of a scam, but I support generosity to all people, whether they are hated minorities like Jews or children who have been forced to be soldiers in Czarist army… or Ugandan rebel army, for that matter.

In San Francisco right there, there are people who want to make circumcision illegal. They have a “moral objection” to brises. We now have one political party who would say that insurance companies must cover procedures, no matter if they have “moral objections” to them. So, if you think that insurance companies should be required to provide medical procedures, including brises, then you are with the Democratic Party. This is NOT a question of taxpayer dollars. Let me repeat, this is NOT a question of taxpayers paying for circumcision. The GOP wants to allow any health insurance company to be able to refuse medical service based on moral objections. In New York City, drinking soft drinks is frowned upon by our city government. So it’s quite conceivable that an insurance company will refuse to cover your health problems because they have a moral objection to soft drink consumption.

This is the issue that Ms. Fluke was talking about.

As Jews, I think we should chose words carefully, so I have to object to your characterization of calling Ms. Fluke a slut “inappropriate.” There are many disgusting aspects of our news media. but calling someone a “slut” is really disgusting and inexcusable.

I hope you study this issue a bit more. The Democrats are NOT trying to get more government subsidies. If you’re concerned about more government control over healthcare and life styles, then you are closer to the Democratic position.

I could go on, but as a Jew, I am always half expecting politicians to throw Jews under the bus in order to advance their own power. The Democrats are able to sacrifice our interests when expedient, and don’t think the GOP won’t jettison their love for the Jews at any moment.

    in reply to: Great?? #854349

I would say that “greatness” (whatever that menas) is usually an attribute of someone who has transcended their upbringing. A truly great person can sit in his room and just look at the walls and come up with a new and powerful new perspective. Or they could be a worldly person who has synthesized many influences.

I don’t like the idea that our upbringing determines whether we’re a good person or bad. We are all responsible for our own actions.

Man was created in the image of Hashem. We are all capable of greatness.

Thank you so much for posting this! I have been lurking for a few months, waiting to pose basically the same question. I am very interested in finding other Jews from Hungarian lands- and I don’t want to forget Romania, which also has a good chunk of the Carpathian mountains.

Jewish life was annihilated by waves of anti-semitism, and my guess you can find more Hungarian Jews here in Brooklyn than you can in the villages of Transylvania. I am especially concerned about preserving parts of their traditions, especially songs, foods and other parts of Jewish life that will get lost. Anyone who still remembers about life there is probably quite old, so I feel pressed for time to collect this. My guess is that people reading YeshivaWord are too young to have grown up in pre-WW II Hungary, but there are probably a lot of people here whose family comes from there.

I am also very distressed at the current government in Hungary which I consider unwelcoming (to put it mildly) to Jewry, and current government’s association with outright anti-semites is eclipsed by the violently anti-semitic Jobbik party. It’s truly frightening.

Getting back to the original post of this thread, here are some online resources about Hungarian Jews and the Holocaust:

And just in time for Purim, here are some photos from a Purim Shpiele from Miskolc:

I started reading an interesting book about the history of Jews in Miskolc, which might not be the area you were thinking about. I can’t find my link to the book at the moment, but here’s a relevant link:

Could the bus line be turned into a private club? Only members of the club who should their membership cards could board the bus. Would that get around the legal requirement that publicly accessible places cannot discriminate in this country?
