It’s time to define the term of “Modern Orthodox” in thr CR to avoid future misunderstandings.

I don’t inderstand your point. Are you trying to day that chassidishe bochurim are plain vanilla, don’t know much about the world and the yeshivish that go on dates are different?

    BP Totty,

You have a wrong picture of the whole beshow proccess. A boy who keeps quiet will never make it. In today’s days it’s one of the worst things to do on a beshow. There is plenty of things to talk about. Ask anyone who went through it, including myself.

    You said:

“IMHO, there is no substitute for going out on a real date. That way, you get to see how each party behaves over the course of an afternoon (dealing with traffic, driving manners, table manners, ect)”

Really now? As if people aren’t more formal on dates than by regular life, a few months after the wedding?

To build a true Toradige home is expected from every jew. Learning all day and not working, is not. Sow how can someone say that in order to build a toridige home one should learn all day?

While I agree that a full time learner has more of a chance to grow on a higher madreiga, as far as establishing a tora’tiga home a worker and a learner have the same chance.

Dr. Pepper – How many kids does he have?

missme – I pay $3500 in a brooklyn chasidishe cheder, and it’s not the full price. section 8 is closed. I don’t see how it’s possible to live on a teachers income. I am still living in my 1 bedroom apt. because I can’t afford to pay $2000 rent a month with my job.

SJS – So you want someone to be the only fool and stop taking money from the goverment to reduce goverment spending?

different culture. speaking yiddish, mens levush, womens dress, age for shidduchim, bsho’s dates, differnt yeshiva’s, many times different derech halimud, women getting a degree the norm, I can go on and on. Of course not everything applies to everyone, but in general it sure gives you some picture of the way of life.

Btw The thing that made me start this thread is because my 3rd son is starting cheder next year and he was born in the last month, and people are telling us ” You’re not worried that he will be from the youngest?”. and i don’t like this attitude.

OK. But leaving back a grade is not a matter of setting a stndard on the child’s part, it’s more that the parent has a need that the child should be on top.

Is is definitely not a chassidishe thing to do!!! The fact that there are chassidishe people doing it doesn’t mean anything. There are some chassidishe people that don’t keep up to the standards.

in the days of Moshe Rabbeinu, a gentile king, having heard of his leading the Jewish nation out of Egypt, splitting the sea, receiving the Torah, etc. greatly desired to see how Moshe looked (there were no tabloids back then). It was beneath his dignity to journey into the desert to meet him, so he hired a skilled artist to study Moshe and ultimately paint his portrait. The artist spent many months until he was satisfied with his work and presented it to its commissioner. The king took one look at the picture, and gave the artist a slap across his face. “How dare you try to fool me! I am well versed in the reading of faces, and the picture you’ve painted is of a man who is of very poor character. Am I to believe this the great Moshe, who’s name is uttered with such reverence in all the world?” The artist, however, stuck by his story that this was indeed Moshe.

The king, intrigued, journeyed into the desert to behold Moshe’s countenance with his own eyes. To his shock, Moshe looked exactly as the artist had depicted him. He approached the great leader and expressed his surprise, based on his understanding of face-reading. “Why are you surprised?” asked Moshe simply. “Is this not the true test of man – to overcome his poor character and strive for greatness – not to be born into it?” (This story is quoted by Tiferes Yisrael [Kiddushin 4:77] and others. There is some disagreement as to its veracity [some say it was Aristotle and not Moshe [Midrash Eliyahu]). But for the most part the story is widely accepted [see Or P’nei Moshe (Chukas), Noam Ha-middos (88:2), P’ri Ha’aretz (Balak), et al.]) “

I stutter sometimes when i speak to people with wich i feel intimidated from, and when I have to say a story or explain something difficult. I think it has to do that i become nervous in these situations and I feel like I have to search for the correct words.

Thats the good part of the CR there is no stuttering.

There must be somethings New York has to offer which is not found OOT.

Which could be shidduchim, business and other reasons. It doesn’t reflect on the level of yiddishkeit.

I think that there are advantages and disadvantages for the city and for OOT for gashmius and for ruchnius.

My point was that frum means following taryag mitzvos and not only shabbos kashrus… I’ll let everyone decide each and every mitzva… BTW one of the 613 mitzvos is to follow d’rabannan

A person is required to follow 613 mitzvos. If someone is not following lekatchila 1 of the 613 mitzvos (knowing that it’s a mitzva) then that person is not frum. If someone is following all the mitzvos but is struggling with some of them and is working on them then that person is frum
