Sam2ParticipantWrong answer. You would (hopefully) call your Rov and ask what to do.
Sam2ParticipantSam4: I’m not trying to say anything. The Shulchan Aruch said it for me. See the Rambam (I believe) Hilchos Ta’aniyos 2:14 (somewhere around there) for a possible Heter. The Poskim also bring down that “Lezarez Bimelachtam” is Muttar as well (which should apply to non-Jewish and Jewish music equally).
Sam2ParticipantM80: Read the title again.
October 11, 2011 5:01 pm at 5:01 pm in reply to: ??????? ?????? ????? ????? ??????; But do we know what ???? is? #822053Sam2ParticipantI’ve been looking for it (well, sort of; I glanced somewhere but haven’t really had time to look for it). I feel like I saw somewhere that the Passuk of Ki Mitziyon Teitzei Torah refers to the Lishkas Hagazis where the Sanhedrin sat.
Sam2ParticipantSakanah means “Afilu Safek Sakanas Nefashos”.
Sam2ParticipantDr. Seuss: There is decent reason to assume that being placed in prison constitutes a Sakanah. It certainly did in an unenlightened Europe. That was probably a real Sakanas Nefashos to be Oveir a D’Oraisa to avoid. Being put in prison in America probably isn’t. So that’s why I said “maybe” with a Shinui.
Sam2ParticipantI feel like it’s a Mefurash Gemara in Ta’anis that it’s Muttar.
Sam2ParticipantOrach Chayim 560:3
Sam2ParticipantZahavasdad: You would have to refuse to sign. That is not a case of Sakanas Nefashos. Maybe if the cop threatened you with resisting arrest for refusing to sign then you could sign with a Shinui.
Sam2ParticipantBar Shattya might have had multiple personality disorder.
Sam2ParticipantCouldn’t you be him?
Sam2ParticipantI hope I am. I tutor people for the SATs sometimes. I’d be a bad tutor if I didn’t understand the test.
Sam2ParticipantEssays aren’t worth as many points unless they changed it since I took it. Just practice a lot with the questions and make sure you know the rules of writing. You seem smart, so making a logical argument shouldn’t be a problem. Just prepare yourself so that you know what types of questions you’ll get and familiarize yourself with the trick answers they could try and give you.
Sam2ParticipantSo look up what those honors programs require and then you know what to aim for.
Sam2ParticipantGiggle girl: I am not accusing you of anything. But there are bad people in this world, and the internet gives them unprecedented access to everyone, especially someone naive enough to ask an anonymous internet chat room if anyone would take an overseas trip with her. We might feel like a nice, peaceful community on here but no one really knows who anyone else is. So, once again, I say that this is just asking for trouble.
Sam2ParticipantChanie: your husband’s response is against a Gemara in Brachos.
Sam2ParticipantDepends what you’re looking for. 2100 will probably get you into an honors program at most good colleges, maybe 2200 if you’re looking top Ivy League.
Sam2ParticipantOr even someone pretending to be a girl. You just don’t do things like that anywhere on the internet, I don’t care how secure and honest the CR is. It’s just silly. You find friends of friends of friends in real life. Not online.
Sam2ParticipantCan this thread be closed or removed? It’s just asking for something to go wrong. Giggle girl, ask people you know in real life.
Sam2ParticipantEven if you can never convince the haters you should at least refute their claims so that others won’t fall in with them.
October 10, 2011 10:30 pm at 10:30 pm in reply to: Is it mutar to tie a string to the schach? #816124Sam2ParticipantAIC: Rav Schacther holds that everyone reads that Chazon Ish of Ma’amad D’ma’amad wrong and that it would be okay.
Sam2ParticipantJothar: It’s a Machlokes in Tosafos.
Sam2ParticipantChacham: What are you guys learning?
Sam2ParticipantOne of Avi Weiss’s main issues is that he denies the concept of Gedolei Hador.
Sam2ParticipantGAW: Well, those two random lines were just usefully taken out of context. Well done. Also, you might have to ask Talmidei R’ Meir for Mechila.
Sam2ParticipantToi: The assumption that K’lal Yisroel can lose their status as the Am Hanivchar is against one of the 13 Ikkarim. The world might cease to exist if we all deny the Torah, but we can never stop being the Am Hanivchar.
Sam2ParticipantHealth: And what’s the Heter in places where it’s not cold? Most places in America isn’t like Poland. I’ve seen people in Florida not sleep in a Sukkah. How do you justify that?
Sam2ParticipantMdd: In that Gemara they were doing worse things. Also, the Gemara in Ta’anis by (I believe) Abba Chilkiya is a Ra’ya B’rurah that a woman can be in public completely Mekushetes so long as it is not in an inappropriate fashion.
Sam2ParticipantYou also have to consider that the owner/seller/etc. might be offended if you refuse the discount.
Sam2ParticipantSam4: What does that Gemara prove? That a Tzadeikis is held to an incredibly high level? We know she did something wrong (and it’s not clear what being Medakdeik in her steps means; that can be read several ways), but that doesn’t mean that it’s something that is Assur for the average person.
Sam2ParticipantYitay: I forget where, but since I was 16 or so I always had an assumption that S’ar is an Ervah Mid’rabannan. I feel like I saw that somewhere but I have absolutely no idea where.
Sam2ParticipantAmused: Really? Looking overly or inappropriately attractive maybe. Are you really gonna that it’s an Issur D’Oraisa of Lifnei Iver for a beautiful woman to ever be in sight of men? The Poskim don’t call it that. Also, it’s not Lifnei Iver anyway.
October 10, 2011 12:41 am at 12:41 am in reply to: Why I can't I just walk around with a shaved head? #818803Sam2ParticipantIt could be that fuzz isn’t long enough to be Halachically considered hair.
Sam2ParticipantFind me an Issur on a woman looking attractive.
Sam2ParticipantWorkaholic: What’s the Issur? Halacha considers someone’s natural hair to be an issue and nothing else. Just because it’s slightly illogical from one point of view doesn’t mean that that will change the Halacha.
Sam2ParticipantSam4: Assuming I read it right, I never get vorts like that. It Mamash completely reverses what the words mean.
HaLeiVi: I feel like it should apply. Have to think it out more. Can you say that a real Istenis is always Pattur because just being outside annoys him?
Sam2ParticipantChanie: Ah. K’lal Yisroel weren’t Niduyin Lashamayim yet then so I assumed he still kept full Nevuah until the Meraglim.
Sam2ParticipantShlishi: Why is Chatzi Shiur being Assur relevant? It’s still less of an Issur so it goes under the category of Ma’achilin Oso Hakal Hakal Techila.
Sam2ParticipantShlishi: V’chai Bahem isn’t a Mitzvas Achila so there is no Chiyuv to eat a Shiur.
Sam2ParticipantToi: All anyone is saying is that he created things which will help mankind in many ways. For the Goyim his technologies will definitely move forward the human condition. Jews have to choose whether to use his devices well or poorly. But those who were not strong enough to resist temptation eventually would have found other ways to go off. It’s not like music or TV shows on an iPod are the only way to see/hear things one shouldn’t.
Sam2ParticipantThat’s news to me. I always would have assumed that you make a Bracha. Did HKBH not create the synthetic aromas as well? I’ll look at R’ Shlomo Zalman’s piece B”N but I don’t understand it yet.
Sam2ParticipantMik5: Such a person should be happy that he was given the opportunity to fulfill the rare Mitzvah of V’chai Bahem. Chas Veshalom that he should have to do T’shuvah for doing what the Torah wants from him.
Sam2ParticipantWhy would artificial odors not require a Borei Minei Besamim?
October 9, 2011 5:30 am at 5:30 am in reply to: Why I can't I just walk around with a shaved head? #818790Sam2ParticipantJust curious, but who says you can’t? It would draw attention, but aside from that issue (assuming you hold that’s not inherently Assur except where discussed by the Poskim) why couldn’t you?
Sam2ParticipantWell, then these Vert;ech feel very strange.
Sam2ParticipantSam4: That one doesn’t make sense either. batel Da’ato Eitzel Kol Adam. If you’re Pattur you’re Pattur and bringing food that will be ruined out is presumably an issue of Bal Tashchis.
Sam2ParticipantI agree with HaLeivi’s point. The question never gets off the ground. Your question would only apply after the first day, in which case Lulav is D’Rabannan and stealing is D’Oraisa. And even so, you can only say Aseh Doche Lo Sa’asei when the two are simlutaneous. If the Lo Sa’asei comes first then it’s a Mitzvah Haba’ah ba’aveirah.
Sam2ParticipantDr. Seuss: There is no Nusach all year round. You go to a Beis Din of 3 knowledgeable people, you explain your vow, and they say Mutar Lach.
Sam2ParticipantHealth: If it’s obvious you don’t have to try. Just like I wouldn’t go into my room if it was 40 degrees (F), I don’t even have to go into the Sukkah. And while that is technically true, your body has a much harder time fighting off any infection or virus whatsoever when it’s colder.
