DY: Is there tuna with a Hashgacha Temidis? Part of the problem is that they call people out to Indonesia or wherever as Mashgichim once every few months and so they have ample warning.

DY: He holds that there is no real Hashgacha on them and that there is a serious Chashash that dolphin or some other Treif fish is mixed in with the shredded tuna in the cans.

42: Don’t be confused by Joseph’s Amaratzus. It’s not Avodah Zarah. It’s a separate Issur D’Oraisa of Lo Sa’asun Iti (assuming that you hold a picture falls under that category; there is room to argue that a photograph is Muttar while a painting is Assur). But it’s not Avodah Zarah.

Joseph: Many members of my family have adopted Brisk. They leave a pair of glasses at home and a pair in Shul and they struggle through in the middle. They will rely on the Eruv for glasses if (and only if) their poor vision actually won’t allow them to get to Shul otherwise.

All of this is only if they don’t wear their glasses full time. I have a few relatives who wear the same glasses for everything they do (both distance and reading) and therefore they can wear them on Shabbos.

What ubiquitin said. If you read through Rabbi Ribiat’s entire book, then either he or you (and I’m guessing it’s you) kinda missed an important concept.

    Regarding the OP:

Walking in front of one who is davening

R’ Shlomo Zalman was famous for saying there are cases where this is Muttar (e.g. someone is blocing an aisle)

Raising hands/ eyes to the ceiling by davening, making faces

Raising hands or eyes isn’t wrong per se. It’s just pointless. But if it helps with Kavanah, there’s no reason not to do it.

Eating less than the required amount of bread/ matza by a Shabbos or Pesach seuda.

It is really hard to have less than the B’dieved Shiurim. According to many, even the Lechatchilah Shiurim are pretty tiny.

Davening with the eyes open, looking around

The Kabbalistic Seforim (some quoted in the MB) have very bad things to say about this, but some contemporary Seforim have Heterim/Limmudei Zechus (I think I saw a strong one B’sheim R’ Nissim Karelitz).

    Not washing mayim achronim properly

It is a Machlokes Achronim on how to wash Mayim Achronim. It is nearly impossible to not do it properly according to some Shittos. (Of course, it’s impossible to do it improperly according to those who hold it’s not necessary at all.)

Not learning enough Torah on Shabbos & yom tov

What is different than any other day?

Also, this list seems weird. Some of them might be problems in many sections of the Frum world, but some of these just aren’t. Why didn’t you just list the whole Mishnah Berurah and be done with it?

I also don’t know why you are accusing Gedolim of not knowing a B’feirush Shulchan Aruch (YD 141:4). It’s not an Avodah Zarah issue.

PBA: I dunno. I’ve seen leases with the clause that as long as there is 24-hour notice, he can show the apartment during any daytime hours during the final month/2 months of the lease. Hopefully he’ll respect your wishes re Shabbos/the birthday party, but depending on the lease it could very well be his right.

Joseph: Again, depending on the lease, he has whatever rights. And just because it’s not worth it for him to sue you doesn’t make it right and/or Muttar to lie and pretend to have “personal issues” or whatever to avoid showing.

DY: To give a correct Halachic answer that Avi probably doesn’t know, it’s because we were never Machzik Lebanon as part of E”Y post-Galus Bavel. Anything that we have been Machzik has Kedushas HaAretz. Those that we haven’t don’t.

(It’s debatable whether Kibbush/Chazakah by the current Medinah acquires Kedushas HaAretz, but everything I said is certainly true by the what Olei Bavel were Machzik.)

The Ben Pakua farm is old news and the guy in charge is just trying to fool people. He claimed that R’ Schachter endorsed it so R’ Schachter had to publicly state that no such thing ever happened and that he disagrees with the Halachic ability to have the farm.

Health: That’s not the point. I agree it’s more in Israel. It’s a dumb point because if there were more Jews in Iran (read: anyone who hasn’t been there for hundreds of years), more Jews would be killed in Iran. Iran is not safer for Jews.

More Chinese people were killed in China than in Israel last year. Does that mean that Israel is safer for Chinese? Or just that there are a lot more Chinese people in China than in Israel?

Joseph: Incorrect. You must present ID that you are 18 years of age to buy a ticket. Most stores don’t enforce this when the purchaser is clearly an adult, but it’s just like carding for any liquor (21) or lottery purchase.

Health: That is an absurd equation. Iran is far more dangerous for Jews and everyone knows it.

Here is an analogous statement to yours.

It is more dangerous to vacuum than to walk outside in a tornado, because more people died while vacuuming in Israel last year than from being outside in a tornado.

Do you know why? It’s because Israel doesn’t get tornadoes.

To quote a Rabbi at a high school in NY (I forget which one):

    1. Is kollel life the ideal or is working and should kollel folks get community support?

It depends on the person. Some are made to work, some are made to learn.

If the community can afford to support a Kollel, they have to. No one has a right to be Matil themselves on the Tzibbur just because they want to learn.

    2. Also, should Israeli bochrim be forced to serve in the army?

If they’re not learning, probably. If they are learning, let them learn. David and Yoav.

3.Why is there such a shidduch crisis?

    Who knows?

    4. Is modern orthodoxy problematic?

Not inherently. Many who take the title, though, do not do so honestly.

    5. Why do people use labels like yeshivish, how accurate are labels anyway?

So they can put other people down and/or put themselves up.

    6. Is it wrong to have a very expensive chasuna?

Probably not, but only if you can afford it.

    7. cholov yisroel- whats the deal?

I dunno. Large parts of the world chose a Din D’Rbannan with a Machlokes Achronim to make into one of the major issues of what makes one “Frum”. I have no idea why.

The Gemara or Tosfos (don’t remember which) ask why we don’t do an autopsy on all murder victims to check if they’re a Treifah even if that could get the accused acquitted because it’s not worth Nibul HaMeis.

That seems to be comparable here. Maybe protecting society from a potential child murderer is more important? I don’t know. We would need to see the Noda Bihudah in-depth. I haven’t looked at it in a very long time.

DY: Yes, but according to how most read the Rambam the Heter only applies to those who are/will become Rabbonim and teachers, not to Stam people who just want to sit and learn. Some extend the Rambam past that, but this Rambam has already been stretched thin enough.

Joseph: That is a misreading of the Rambam. He says that because he assumes that it would only take 3 hours of work a day to earn a living. If it would take more he would say to work more. Read the entire Halachah.
