It can be disheartening to see so many people focus on the externals (shirt colors, pants/jeans, beard/no beard, hat) and almost forget about the true essence of a person (middos, interpersonal relationships, honesty in business, etc….)

Josh31 — “Historically, one of the reasons we do not wear tefilin during the day (except during davening) is because of fraudsters.” Could someone clarify what exactly this means?

There are a number of individuals who wear tefillin both at Shachris and at Mincha regularly. Sources say that the Gr”a wore Tefillin throughout the day. The Shaar HaKavanot of Rav Chaim Vital documents the practice of his teacher (the Ariza”l) wearing Shimusha Rabba at Mincha.

It might be more precise to say that we do not posess clarity of thought and purity of body to wear Tefillin beyond a limited time each day.

My response usually goes like this: I’m in my 40’s and I don’t drink; so why should you? That usually downplays any interest in alcohol.

Please, leave him alone. He and for that matter, all of us will have to answer for all our actions and decisions (positively, neutrally and negatively) to HaKadosh Baruch Hu.

It really comes down to compatability and level of maturity, not age.

When I was growing up, the concept of white collar worker vs. blue collar work was prevalent. B’Kitzur; white collar workers were professionals; doctors, lawyers, accountants, teachers, etc… whereas blue collar workers were manual workers, factory employess, etc… I am not sure the origin but I would surmise that blue shirts tended to hide the sweat of the employees.

But perhaps from a different perspective; white shirts and black slacks/pants tend to be the “lowest common denominator” in terms of color — lacking color means one does not concern themselves with matching, etc… and therefore little time is wasted when it comes to clothing (in the Yeshiva, Chassidic world).

I am not necessarily disagreeing with colored shirts (I wear them), I simply am trying to find the underlying foundation of a strict white shirt “policy” in some circles/circumstances.

I touch the box with my strap and kiss the box (shel yad and shel rosh).

If you take the Shel Rosh first, you must cover it up and put the Tefillah Shel Yad first. You are not passing over the mitzvah becasue the pasuk says: U’Kshartam Le’Ot Al Yadecha Vehayu LeTotafot Ben Eineikha which is darshened (1) the order is the hand and then the head and (2) Totafot is plural of Ot which means that you have to “see two Ot” at the time of the head tefillin; i.e., one on your hand and the second on the head. Also, there is a halakhic rule of Ma’alin B’Kodesh V’Ein Moridin which means that you increase in Kedusha but not decrease. Since the Kedusha of the Rosh Tefillin is greater than the Kedusha of the Yad Tefillin, we place the Yad Tefillin first.

All this is under the consideration that there are no injuries to your arm, etc… If that is the case, you must consult your Local Orthodox Rav.

It’s the opposite of Tzniyus. Clearly they want to draw attention to themselves and that they have. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be talking about it here.
