It has been proven beyond doubt that couples who marry at younger ages are more likely to get divorced than those who are older when getting married.. This is true especially if the girls are under 21, al pi the study I read. In the frum velt, girls and boys commonly get married very young compared to the national average. This might be the reason behind growing divorce rates. Just a thought.

DY: funny that a non-Halacha related article of clothing is so ubiquitous and even defines halachically meticulous communities by said clothing (‘black hat’ communities)?

Even in the best law schools, they give homework and tests and are competitive about grades. The best yeshivos have bochurim sitting and learning for hours- the motivation comes not from grades or tests, but from within.

in reply to: Black hatsnafka minahs? #1024300

It’s kind of funny that the black hat, a staple of all ‘yeshivish’ oriented Yidden, isn’t based in Halacha (from what ingot from the comments).

in reply to: High school girls with Internet access #1044002

A mature, experienced adult having Internet access is very different than a high schooler having it. Can’t you see this crucial difference?

in reply to: BTL or Regular Degree #1054614

PBA, that analogy isn’t good. . A better analogy is its like a highly successful college football player who wants to get info about the nfl, because odds are he is going to get there and he wants to be prepared for a potential life choice. Hacha nami, a guy seriously taking the LSAT, and especially one with a Gemara background can expect to do well and go to a decent law school.

Writersoul: It’s not a point in her favor because she turned Harvard down! You do not write on your resume “I got into Harvard but I cordially declined their invitation” lol. getting in means very little- you have to actually go!

If a frum girl decides to not go to harvard means she did lose something- good job opportunities and top-rate professors and fellow students. That is quite a loss. And why would you pay 200 dollars to get a self-esteem boost? Sounds silly to me.

in reply to: Black hatsnafka minahs? #1024268

These are great responses but not exactly what I’m looking for. I’m asking why HALACHICALLY people wear black hats- because of beged elyon or because of atifah? Or is it just a minhag?

If the wearing of a hat is based on beged elyon, then isn’t that subjective? What was considered “elyon” in the Rif’s time or the Shulchan Aruch’s wouldn’t be considered elyon, or probably even fashionable today. Therefore, does the clothing style change? If black hats are no longer considered respectable and fancy clothing, should they be worn? Or the does the minhag remain? If it remains, why? It’s not elyon! And this is not a troll thread why do people always say that.

in reply to: Black hatsnafka minahs? #1024257

What’s the nafka Minah between holding its a din of atifah vs. begged elyon?

Wow. The part about emunah kills me, as the CR is supposed to be a warm, engaging and yeshivish environment. Much hatzlachah in your all your future learning and doing.

    in reply to: BTL #985355

It actually proves that Touro doesn’t teach critical thinking skills. Most college students only dream of getting into Harvard because it is so highly selective.

in reply to: Why are some people so smart? #1043602

Yitayningwut: speak for yourself. If you don’t value halacha l’ma’aseh, you have a problem. If you are saying only Gemara b’iyun is valuable, you also have a problem.

in reply to: Why are some people so smart? #1043574

Torah isn’t limited to Gemara at all. Bais yaakovs teach Chumash, tanach, meforshim, Halacha, and machshava- right? All those areas are more than enough to learn.

in reply to: Learning Tips #984629

That is very good advice generally, but Torah is special because you have to put so much time into it, and it often isn’t fun until you put a LOT of time into it. I’ve heard Torah compared to a closed flower which isn’t pretty, but after some time it ripens and blossoms to become beautiful. How can I make it beautiful, cause right now Torah is a closed flower to me. I see how amazing it can be, but I want to get to the next level?

in reply to: College for women #985276

WIY: There are plenty of challenges in the outside world and workplace as well, but we don’t tell girls to sit in caves learning Torah instead of working. College is a nisayon, but Jews are tough- we don’t give up on nisyonos! We pass them with flying colors!

WIY: if molesters really are suffering, they should get help instead of taking it out on kids who have done nothing wrong.

in reply to: More leitzanus about ovrei aveirah. Mrs. Lopatin style. #984600

PBA: Post the link to threads where you make fun of those people, because from what I can tell you overwhelmingly make fun of YCT and not about anyone else. Sounds hypocritical to me.

no one else agrees with YCT except their musmachim, rebbeim, and families. Why do you feel so defensive against them? We here all know they are wrong.

Soldier spitter: aveirahs committed: where is his kavod habriyos? He also ignored “dah mah shetashiv leapikores” – cuz the kanoi just spit, instead of using his seichel. If this guy is a Talmid Chacham, he shamed the Torah. Now Israelis look at him and say all Torah learners spit on their brave soldiers. Shame.

Is that difference than “paying” someone to be more jewish through alcohol, free food, and events? Chabad and Aish do that.

in reply to: Why are some people so smart? #1043565

WIY- a select few the posters here show a familiarity with gemaras all over shas, rishonim, and poskim that is quite impressive and shows they’ve learned seriously for a while, and remember a lot of it. No easy feat.

in reply to: College for women #985271

Torah: Studies consistently show that going to college will result in making more money. Are you against making enough money to afford yeshiva, give tzedakah, and cover all the other expenses of frum life? Especially if the husband is in kollel, a good income by a wife is definitely needed. Just stay away from apikorsus, get a rav, and keep learning. That should be enough to remain frum AND get a good parnassah.

in reply to: Are Women Really Jewish? #1065095

RD- would you prefer that these women NOT come to shul, daven b’tzibur and hear Krias hatorah?

in reply to: More leitzanus about ovrei aveirah. Mrs. Lopatin style. #984598

PBA: I think you’re pretty funny. But why limit your humor to YCT-related satire? The jokes get a little repetitive and boring, especially since you’re the one always telling them. How about making fun of “frum” s*x abusers? Or the few kanoim in beit shemesh that spat on girls, or the guy who spit on an Israeli female soldier for sitting in the front of a mehadrin bus? Or rock thowers on shabbos, or husbands that refuse gets? I could go on… YCT aren’t the only ovrei aveirah, so why not spread the leitzonus love?

Idk about the seminary itself, but Rav Wallerstein is an amazing speaker and huge Talmid Chacham. I’d pay to learn from him every week haha.

in reply to: What is a purposeless life? #984703

Trust- no way. When you start dating, if you have issues you better get rid of them and learn from your mistakes, or else have a hard time in shidduchim. The pressure makes you rise to the occasion. How can you give your problems to someone else? If they don’t like you, shape up, or move on. It’s totally fair.

in reply to: What is a purposeless life? #984701

Internet addiction is a serious problem, and nirah li that this person should go to therapy to understand why he is behaving the way he is. An addicted person tries to make up for some failure or lack of something in his life by overdoing it in another area. This guy should check himself out, figure out what he wants in life, make goals, and accomplish them. Here’s a good start: go back to school, get a job, learn with a rabbi, maybe start dating (it makes you clean up your act).

in reply to: Onslaught of Frum People That Are Closet Atheists #984395

Marbeh: adderabah it should be discussed. We are not Christians who accept everything simply because the pope/church leaders say so, r”l. The first Halacha in the Mishnah Torah is not to “believe” in God, but to “know” God exists, through rationality, philosophy, and all the other tools God gives us to discover him (Torah isn’t the only one).. Answering this yungerman increases emunah, Daas, and glorifies hashems name.

in reply to: Are the Chilonim and Datiim Tziyonim the biggest problem? #983832

You cannot blame this lack of chareidi achdus on outside forces, because they are not persecuting us- rather, we are quite religiously free, growing in size, and politically independent. We have strength in numbers and strength in Torah. Why don’t we use those kochos and opportunities from Hashem l’shem shomayim?

in reply to: Are sons more desirable than daughters? #984292

Sam2: I’m not sure what your mekor is, but its pshat from the Gemara in Shabbos 32-33 that it is not an insult. Rashbi fears that his wife will give in to torture and reveal his hiding place cuz her Daas is kal. This dies not refer to intelligence, but rather emotional frailty.

in reply to: Would you intervene or let nature run its course? #988511

Redleg: but we have so many mitzvos and halachos like shiluach haken, shechitah and tzaar baalei chaim, which demonstrate that we SHOULD care about what’s happening in nature and do our best to not cause unecessary suffering to animals or the beriah.

in reply to: At what point are you officially one side or the other? #983468

HaKatan: if you cannot respect MO rabbanim like Rav Schachter, how can you have the temerity to think they will respect you? It doesn’t matter if you think you are right- rebbeim like the ones Charliehall cited are huge talmidei chachomim. The idea that you would accuse these scholars of avodeh zaroh, and link them to a shmutzy article about bars is shameful.

And regarding zionism, its funny you say that Hashem could bring geulah without the State. Don’t you see how much easier it is for mashiach to come when Jews are free and safe from the churbanos of Europe?

To summarize: the treife State supports and hosts an unprecedented amount of Talmud Torah in a safe and holy environment. There are no Cossacks. Pogroms, or inquisitions. You can eat kosher easily, learn lots of Torah, spend 2 years helping other Jews expand the borders of eretz yisrael, and then learn, learn, learn.

in reply to: Shabbos guests breaks chair WWYD #983889

relax. VM is just seeking a simple eitzah regarding how to react to a certain not-so-common life situation. Everyone here is anonymous and no one knows where anyone lives. And anyway, as VM said, there are plenty of people that have broken a chair before in every jewish neighborhood. its not loshon horah to ask for advice anonymously.

thanks keepitcoming and wiy! both of you mentioned mir- is there a point to me going there instead? I hear its big and easy to get lost in..

in reply to: Yeshivah in EY #982125

thanks for the responses! I will definitely look into Toras Moshe and Merkaz Hatorah, as I’m leaning more to the black hat crowd. Vogue- I believe Ohr Somayach is a baal teshuvah yeshivah- are you thinking of a different one w/ same name?

Can anyone here vouch for these yeshivos from direct or indirect experience, and give me some more specific, enlightening info (e.g. kids, learning, hashkafah)? Or if you know of more options, that’d be great too.

in reply to: Yeshivah in EY #982119

sf- from what I’ve heard, gush and hakotel are great places, but I’m specifically looking for a more yeshivish, chareidi-leaning learning experience in eretz yisrael.

in reply to: Watching Movies #981640

it is possible to watch movies and still be shomer torah umitzvos, if that’s what you’re asking. I know lots of people who do it.

If you watch them all the time, movies can be bittul zman. Also, lots of modern movies are untznius or violent.

Therefore, as long as you don’t watch too many movies, and are makpid to only watch good, clean movies, you’re good.
