Go home, check it out, make it happen, wrap it up, l’chaim, vort, wedding after shvuos, come back for Elul, she can parade in Ramat Eshkol while you shteig away. No worries, life is easy. The kibbud av should bring in a nice monthly check. Makes Pesach in Flatbush almost worthwhile.
rationalParticipantUsing any “adamah” is ok from a purely halachic bracha standpoint. A strawberry also works.
A normal way of thinking would suggest some sort of green vegetable akin to real “karpas” which is a type of celery.
In Europe these types were scarce , and some, like parsley, were unknown, resulting in odd vegetables being used, such as the potato . Sometimes the narrow halachah or minhag isn’t enough, and using common sense is beneficial.rationalParticipantYanky55 is correct.
The cause is a poor secular education and an indifference to the importance of literacy.

Only HebrewrationalParticipantGenerally, when the Ramo states “v’yesh omrim”, he is espousing the Ashkenazic custom and is supporting it over the Mechaber’s position. So yes, l’chatchilah.
rationalParticipantWhen a mitzvah is “about the money”, it’s no longer a mitzvah, it’s just business. But if the business norm is to pay non-family, then you must pay family too. The shadchan cannot be punished for being part of your family.
Hatzlachah on your third date, I’m sure you will know all you need to know about her after this date.March 13, 2019 2:52 pm at 2:52 pm in reply to: What are most people misleaded about what chabad #1695330rationalParticipantI live in Israel. I am very familiar with Chabad and Chabadniks and have very little good to say about their philosophy. But to claim that their women are in violation of tznius regulations is patently false and an evil statement to boot.

Set them up, let them go out, and let them decide for themselves.
That’s much better than a few dozen anonymous know-it-alls controlling their lives via the internetrationalParticipantI try not to give to funds that are cursed, it’s not a good investment. A better investment is to proofread before pressing the “Submit” button

rationalParticipantObviously, 100 eidim is a quantitative exaggeration made to prove the point. The gemara could have said ten or a thousand, the point would be the same. Exaggeration (guzma) is an often-used linguistic tool in halachic literature.

February 18, 2019 7:07 am at 7:07 am in reply to: Why Do Some Rich People Literally Think They Own The World #1681122rationalParticipantA choleh is a “cheftza shel mitzvah” ?
I cannot believe a Jew can write such a thing.
I’m shocked at the lack of mentshlichkeit and common sense.
I assume this attitude is a rarity, otherwise the Torah world is in tatters.rationalParticipantHave him read B’samim Rosh
That way he can become a talmid chacham while reading fictionFebruary 13, 2019 1:34 pm at 1:34 pm in reply to: Photos & Shidduchim – Appropriate Or Not?🖼️🤵👰 #1678822rationalParticipantPhotos are inappropriate, period. The impression here is that the Litvishe Torah world condones this practice and even gives it borderline approval. To reduce a bas yisrael to her physical attributes? Horrible. This is reality? Maybe, but it is certainly not Torah.
rationalParticipantShuls have absolute rights to determine kibbudim of all types. If a shul decides that a non-member has no rights, then he has no rights. His level of “chiyuv” (sic) is irrelevant. If he has yahrzeit or is in shloshim, he must find a stranger-friendly shul. That is the minhag (there is no halachah here, except that the shul has absolute authority) as practiced in Europe for hundreds of years. A good example is the proclamation on the back wall of the Alte-neu shul in Prague from the days of the Noda B’yehudah. Easily available online.
