    First sentence:

“How on earth is that apikorsus?”

Believing he’s coming (always!) doesn’t mean believing he never will arrive isn’t apikorsus, but it’s not clear that the child actually meant that.

Okay. “Alter’s” post was allowed, and your post

was allowed, but my post is not allowed (yet).

Maybe if I broke it into smaller pieces and tried

    those one by one?

Sigh… I tried. I hate when long posts are rejected. It’s more work. Then again, maybe it was because of the length. I’ll try posting it in pieces…

Actually, maybe it was something else. I’ll take that out too.

I just noticed (again – I’d forgotten about it) that this thread has

a “tag” in the upper right corner – those eventually stopped being used. I wonder what happens when it’s clicked on?

Alter wasn’t banned for trolling but for being another user in disguise. Apparently, you can troll all you want under a single name…

By popular request – proof! Dr. Pepper has provided me with both

a riddle and a shidduch story – I’ve attempted to post them at these addresses:

    Courtesy of Dr. Pepper:

A funny ???? was trying to harass the mother of a boy who rejected all names suggested for her son.

He calls and suggests a name that he mentioned 5 years before but the mother recognized the name but forgot why she rejected it.

The ???? reminded her that she didn’t approve of the seminary that the girl went to.

The mother asked him why he’s suggesting it again if she already said no.

The ???? answered, “tomorrow will be 10 years since she came back from seminary so the statute of limitations are expiring”.

The political joke you posted is misleading – only individuals

known for a particular physical skill can demonstrate their

    PAA:

(You need not follow the asterisks. They’re for other readers.)

Interesting to stumble across this post of yours now – I

only just now went through Davar Katan’s methods

of addressing you*! At the time, I assumed each would

simply be a different variant of your name or initials,

and didn’t bother going through them. A mistake, of course. 🙂

(It really is “Sir Patur” now that I’ve knighted you**, eh?)

“Well I have to retract my objection because it turns out that there was another version of the joke already posted by the same person which accords with neither of the two other versions, and thus that poster’s versions lose their credibility.”

Well, I think I have to retract my concession of defeat, or at least of unwillingness to continue battle.

    1. The other version had credibility at the time. However, it never had authority (the CR is not generally a source work), so I don’t think there ever was a reason to object to a slightly different version of a joke. In other words, even if it were a

reasonable expectation for me to have read the “mixed gym” thread version, and even if I had in fact read and remembered it, I would need no justification for posting a different version.

    2. The newly discovered version actually does generally accord with the version I posted, and I appreciate the addition of the word “initial.” (The only major difference between any of them

is the “experimental error” line, which I don’t care for.)

Perhaps you can tell me the nature of “the joke […] embedded within the depths of the argument,” as I am unaware of it (I’m not saying that it doesn’t exist).

Speaking of jokes, here’s one from the “soft matzah” thread:

on soft matza. I won’t say you’re a goy of you eat them.”

If anyone’s addressed the issues I mentioned in the last couple of pages, just say so.

Just remembered – Rowling would seem to have gone with the

“I will create as I speak” origin theory for “abra cadabra,”

as she uses “I will destroy as I speak” for the Killing Curse.

    PAA:

“(By the way I assume that when you wrote “the means to the end” you meant the opposite.)”

No, he used the words correctly. The “means” is murder, and the “end” is immortality (through the Horcrux). (“Means” is a way of accomplishing, as in “by any means,” and “end” is the accomplishment, as in, “to that end.”)

(I haven’t been reading the fancruft – I came in for the official study. When I saw you say you’d shlugged youself up, I went to take a look, and read up through Yekke2’s Horcrux post.)

    yekke2:

“What was so evil about Horcruxes[…]?”

Have you forgotten that Horcruxes involve dividing/ripping/tearing

(or whatever words are used in the book) the soul?*

Besides, Dumbledore describes murder as the “ultimate evil” – it

is no stretch from there to saying that something created to depend on the ultimate evil is the “wickedest of magical inventions.”

(Also, perhaps the evil of the Horcrux is that it is not merely murder as a means, but murder as a means for life. The creator takes that which he values so highly as to kill for it from his victim. An extreme degree of selfishness must be present for this (not precisely) vampirism.)

Your Dumbledore quote seemed a major issue – I thought you had J.K. over a barrel with the “if it’s so evil to conquer death” question, but then this occurred to me – can’t “Was I better?” be interpreted not morally, but character-wise? He could simply be admitting being subject to the same fear as Voldemort was – but is then comforted either by the fact that he had not succumbed to it in the same way as Voldemort had, indicated by his morality not failing, or simply that he had not failed morally as did Voldemort.

    So:

    (a) It is personal weakness that lies behind the effort to avoid death.

Additional answer: As in Judaism, wizard “X?”ology could hold

that the purpose of life is not in this world but somewhere

one goes after death. Attempting to avoid death is, then, an attempt to frustrate the purpose of life itself. Note the ending of Book 1? (It’s been a long time.)

    (b) Dumbledore had not been as weak, and/or failed morally as well. Why Harry was needed to give this answer is beyond me, but don’t many fans criticize the portrayal of Dumbledore towards

    the end of the series?

    (c) Horcruxes involve damaging the soul (and denying another,

in favor of oneself, that which one holds most dear).

    *

So what? A question for another post.

This seems like the right place for this: Has anyone in this discussion heard of the idea (Jewish) that the entire universe is moving towards a time when the genders will be equal as they originally were, symbolized mystically by the restoration of the moon to its original luminosity, and that the energy of this movement of the universe is the reason for the

emergence of the feminist movement? (Or something like that. I don’t remember any more details or where I came across this.)

According to Faranak Margolese (“Off the Derech”) it is mainly because of religious figures who behave negatively”

False. I read the book – her conclusion is essentially that

people go off the derech when their needs are not met within the

community. Once people fall below certain levels of belief, happiness, and familial/communal connection (they vary by individual), it is virtually certain that they will go off.

Something like that, anyway – I recommend reading the book.

(There was such an element, but it wasn’t about religious

figures – it was the general population, if I remember correctly.

It was not given as a primary factor, though.)

Might it possibly depend on one’s reaction to it and what one comes away with? (Have you read Rav Dessler’s “Ohr Michoshech” [in the first volume of Michtav MeEliyahu]?)

On second thought, I don’t think the particular things that make a person nervous count as personality traits.

But the fact is obvious, I assume, to anyone who’s had extended personal contact with multiple gedolim, and it’s simply common sense. (Again, why did we need reminding of it, Veltz?)

R’ Mendel Kaplan said (not exact quote): “Do you think people in earlier times were bigger tzaddikim? They were bigger people.”

what’s wrong with you (personally, morally, or spiritually)?

The answer had better be “nothing whatsoever,” or you could

    EDIT:

    cherrybim:

Yiden ought to daven with their Rav and it’s a shame that the people

going to Uman do not have a warm Rav to be with.

They might have one and choose to go to Uman anyway.

Also, I think some of them would disagree with you, and say

that not only do they have one, they are with him. 🙂

    cherrybim:

Yiden ought to daven with their Rav and it’s a shame that the people

going to Uman do not have a warm Rav to be with.

    ivory:

    1. Does every yid have a warm rav or any rav for that matter?

    2. Many breslove go with a rav or mashpia

    1. Presumably you mean that he’s singling out Uman-goers,

but they’re the subject of the discussion. He might well feel that

it’s a shame for any Yid not to have a warm Rav.

(I’m not sure it’d matter if he was actually accusing Uman-goers of

not having a Rav (as a “sin” of omission). Even if he was singling them

out (see above for justification), it’s a valid accusation – other people

having the same problem doesn’t justify them, although you could

possibly lessen the severity of the “offense” by pointing out that it is

    common practice.)

    2. Good point.
