Well I'll try not to be too offended, considering you threw in that K&T reference ;P

Looks like I really am a politician 🙂

Now mods, I appreciate the gesture, but there are to be no more exceptions to the official policy of no-bumping-year-old-threads.

Clarification: As is sort of visible in my above post, I did not mean to suggest Country Yossi’s “Elan Elan” as a chupa song, just to suggest it for people who don’t like Shwekey’s “Ilan Ilan” (which I’ve never heard), though I suppose by the same reasoning…

Oomis, I know you didn’t see The Best Bubby for 38 years, but you should really know by now – some people on the Internet, and even the Coffee Room, don’t really mean what they say – they’re just doing it for the reactions.

I forgot – a good reason to bump an old thread is that it is a humorous/interesting collection. Newer readers may not have seen it,

and if you add content, so much the better. Basically, that type of thread cannot grow old, only die temporarily. But see my next thread!

And regarding Popa, see my next next thread! [An edit, of course.]

No (see above note?). A few candidates do come to mind, though:

    1) Na’aseh adam b’tzalmeinu kidmuseinu.

    (First recorded question in Chumash.)

    2) Af ki omar Elokim “Lo sochlu mikol etz hagon”.

(First question in the world recorded in Chumash.)

    3) Ayeko.

(Hashem’s first question to a worldly being recorded in Chumash.)

    4) A question in one of the above categories which preceded the first question in that category in the Chumash, but is not in the Chumash, only in another source.

I’ve been keeping a copy of my posts for a while. If it’s too much trouble to copy and paste every attempt into a file, you can use a keylogger program, though it’s not perfect for the use (whatever order you type things in, that’s the way they are in the log, and nothing is removed).

It is considered offensive to use “retard” as an insult because such use is hurtful to the developmentally disabled (for whom it was previously used exclusively as a technical name).

It is considered offensive to use “retard” for a developmentally disabled person because it has acquired a negative connotation due to being used as an insult.

When the person using the word in relation to a DD person is a close relative of said person, it is obvious that they do not mean it negatively. But this does not mean that the word is appropriate for general use. In your cases, the people using the word may not even be aware that many consider the word offensive.

(And would even those people use the word for that son or sister in their presence?)

Tip: <code></code> renders any text inside them inert – that is, you

can type things like <em>italic</em> and they will show up in the post as typed, instead of as italic.

This can be done with less effort by putting a backtick (` – the key is above Tab/below Esc) on each side of the text you want displayed.

This is helpful for troubleshooting effects issues or distinguishing between bodies of text, such as a quote from someone else and your response to it. It’s certainly less work than <blockquote></blockquote>

Also, when using this effect, every character

typed takes up the same amount of space:

    iiiiii
    wwwwww

    as opposed to

    iiiiii

    wwwwww.

This is useful for ASCII art (see the “Laboratory II” thread).

Okay, I’ve got it: If you’re using Firefox, spaces in usernames will not turn into %20, but they will with Internet Explorer.

Ivory: You just type them in, no special equipment required.

Example: Italicization. To italicize, type <em> at the desired starting point and </em> at the desired endpoint. Those won’t show up in your post, or even make a space in it, but whatever’s in between will look like this.

I don’t know if you know – Sholom Ber (from K&T 4) is the title character from the Shteeble-Hoppers song “Sholom Ber” (Break Out).

That’s where the whole thing about him having drowned comes from.

The Sheim Game is a straight-up cover of a non-Jewish

song, with “sheim” instead of “name.”

As for the others (from memory):

    Aseh m’at

    V’emor harbei

    I talk too much and

    You talk the whole day

    Talking is cheap

    Who cares what you say

    Aseh m’at v’

    Emor harbeh!

If you find somebody’s wallet on the street

    Give it back

    Give it back

If you find somebody’s wallet at your feet

    Give it back

    Oh, give it baaaaaaaack

So don’t put it off ’til later

    ‘Cause ha – shovas aveidah

is a mitzvah that will make you happy too

    Oh everything has a place

    And unlike the human race

I like to throw my stuff just anywhere I guess

I put jelly in my pocket

blow my nose like it’s a rocket

and I wear potato kugel on my head

and I eat my pickled herring in your bed

[Some of those foods are probably wrong.]

    <Grins>

Oh, I’m gonna be your true blue friend oh I’m gonna be your friend

If someone starts a fight with you I’ll be there to defend you

And no matter what the outcome I’ll [stand by you?] to the end

‘Cause I’m gonna be your one and only best and true blue friend

(The verses I find a little harder to remember.)

Now let’s say Moish the meanie comes and takes away his bat

and says “This game is over, boys-now what do you think of that?”

He looks in all his pockets but he just can’t find a cent

    […?]

Well it’s Tuki to the rescue when there’s money to be lent

    Ah, good old days.

    SIDI:

Randomex, about bullets, sorry but I don't have a code for it.

That’s alright. One of the 8 pages I saved should have a code, or I could just copy them from your post – I’ve been doing that for musical notes from the end of the Laboratory II thread.

Thanks for doing the detailed profile-URL explanation – I’d forgotten about spaces being expressed as “%20”.

(“%X” codes are used for a variety of symbols in URLs.)

    Anything else?

Actually, yes. Posts relating to a user’s subtitle may be incomprehensible because their subtitle has changed (possibly even multiple times) since the post.

And the -1 years glitch supposedly causes some posts to be out of order. (I don’t know if that’s permanent, or any other details.)

In this post, DaasYochid claims to have taken advantage of it (to pre-date his own post, I assume) – this claim is questioned by PAA.

    Mod:

We can unblock, but it's easier to reactivate from "inactive".

How does that work? Shouldn’t both just be as simple as flipping a switch? (Or is there a registry of blocked users you’ve got to remove someone from in order to unblock them?)

It should be, but due a software glitch, it isn’t.

    cozimjewish:

how do you get a subtitle?

They’re given by the mods. If you hang around long enough, you’ll probably get one. I think it took me about 3 weeks.

(My first one was Memberex, derived from the default subtitle “Member,” which made me laugh the first time I saw it and was serviceable enough, but I eventually realized that it essentially reduced my name to Random. Last night I asked for the one I have now, and there it is.)

If you want to ask for a subtitle, I’d suggest waiting another week or two, then starting a new thread (there’s an add new button at the top of the thread list on the main page), or for that matter, posting anywhere, and putting “for mod read only” at the top of the post. Ask politely and you’ll probably get one.

(If you’d been named “cozimajew,” you might well have ended up with “I do that too” for a subtitle. For all I know, they’ll do it anyway now… :p )

And when it says "Inactive" or "blocked" is that a joke or serious?

That’s not a joke. Inactive users usually have asked the mods to render their accounts inactive so that they temporarily won’t be able to use the CR (probably because their addiction was interfering with their lives). That’s the impression I got.

Blocked users have violated the rules (probably either severely, or multiple times). I don’t know if the mods can unblock a blocked user even if they want to. Maybe they’ll tell us.

We can unblock, but it’s easier to reactivate from “inactive”.

    General useful information:

All posts must be read and approved by a mod before they’re allowed to be seen by the public. You can still see your own posts that haven’t gone through yet – when you look at such a post, the bar along the left side where your name is will be yellow.

You can change (“edit”) your post for a certain amount of time

after you’ve posted it, whether it’s been approved yet or not

(except a post that starts a new thread – that has to go through first). The edit button is at the bottom right of the post.

There is a little hash symbol (#) there too – this symbol holds a link to that specific post.

I guess I’d better explain that one a little more.

I’m well aware of what the two are best known for, but what I mean is, who is better at the other’s “primary” genre, demonstrating their greater versatility?

Has anyone written an ode to the melamed better than this?

(As with most good songs, it sounds better in the ear.)

    There’s a very special man

    He’s / your / friend.

I know CY much more than I do AR, but check out any song in this list for his emotional efforts:

Rabbi Black, Big Bad Moish (and sort of The Rabbi)

    ^Dramatic songs from Wanted.

Nebich of the Shteeble, [Oh, My Yerushalayim], Shlomo, Make-Believe (and Ahvaira)

    ^Emotional songs from Strike Again.

    Shabbos Wine, Tick-Tock (Al Tomar)

^Emotional, from Still On the Loose.

Deaf Man in the Shteeble, Phantom of the Shteeble

    ^from Captured.

I Will Follow Him, The Tiny Old Shteeble, and Mitzvah Tantz (The Wedding’s Over)

    ^from Break Out.

I Am the Flower, Rav Shmuel and the Myrtle Twig, Good Morning Klal Yisroel, and Elan Elan

    ^All from Ride Again!

That’s 24 out of 64 songs by “The Shteeble-Hoppers”. So much

for his being a pure comedian.

Then there’s “These I Remember,” with only 1 in ten songs showing a hint of humor, and it’s still serious (“My Yetzer Hura Says”).

Noticing the [-3] at the end of the thread’s URL, I decided to see what this title had previously been used for.

1st time – Vote for a picture (of a baby, I think) to try to win a stroller for a family – it failed. (4 years ago)

Sparked a discussion on whether it was right to try to win in this manner. My opinion: I think that’s mostly the idea!

2nd time – Help with setting up a camp hotline – one reply (2 years ago)

3 – Tehillim for a ba’al teshuvah who had had a heart attack – response was positive. He was doing better of 10 posts later. (2 years ago)

In case anyone’s interested, when you make a thread with a title that has already been used, “-1” is added to the URL. If the title has been used twice, “-2” will be added, and so on.

I think I’ve only got full lists for “Ride Again!” and the first two albums.

I haven’t heard most of the originals, but I think “Make Believe” is an improvement on the original, I don’t remember “Runaround Sue” being too impressive, and, while I’m not a fan of “7 Little Kids,” it beats “7 Little Girls” in my book. Beyond just me,

I’ve seen people claim online that “Coward of the County” isn’t as good as “Nebich,” and it’s hard to imagine “Blind Man in the Bleachers” is as touching as “Deaf Man in the Shteeble.”

Taking the question literally, it sounds like the two types are

pretty clearly “modern guys” and “modern guys in right-wing yeshivas,” if their homes have TVs and they don’t wear hats (at all) outside yeshiva, but ThatGuy’s second post seems to indicate that this wasn’t his intention.

Maybe he just means that the “modern guys in r-w yeshivas” should

have learned there not to partake of secular culture in the manner that their family does?

Or is the second category “yeshivish kids drifting?”

Variations in standards exist within the camps, of course – I’m from Lakewood, and many of the people I see in the local public library probably don’t identify as modern, whatever they may be checking out. (They aren’t usually yeshiva bochurim.)

Whether they in fact ideologically see no problem with what they’re doing is another story – is that what you mean, ThatGuy?

For girls, things are a little different. Yeshivas are yeshivas, but different girls’ schools may be more or less tolerant. I don’t know.

My own category, of course, is “ideologically yeshivish but in love with (and possibly addicted to) secular culture.”

Here’s the deal: Popa (pronounced puh-puh), full name popa_bar_abba (a play on Abba bar Popa, one of Rav Popa’s sons, who are mentioned at a siyum) is a longtime member of the Coffee Room who fills the role of court jester/troll*-in-residence and is favored by (at least some of) the mods.

    (See here, section C.)

You should not take anything he says

seriously unless it is either 1) about halacha or

    2) believable and sensible in its context.

Otherwise, it is only a joke.

    Popa’s profile is located here:

    http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/profile/popa_bar_abba

Clicking on his name will give you a little bit of information as well.

*”Troll” is a term used for someone on the Internet who says or does things not because they mean them sincerely, but only in order to get a reaction from people.

Gotta love these young’uns who either naturally speak in hashtags and/or assume any site that they’re on uses them. Dern kids!

More seriously, “seventh” has been registered since

December 27, 2012 (1 year) but only became active 3 weeks ago.

As the kids say, whatever. (Anyone who’s lurked for a year would

know not to use hashtags, or at least one hopes they would.)

Well, no one did, so I did a little Googling. Maybe later…

Okay, just let me stick this here so I’ll have everything in one place:

I was thinking that you could create a new account with that name, but then I realized – you can ask a mod to change your name.

Make a new post in this thread and put “for mod read only” at the top. Ask that they change your name because of the mistake. If they won’t do it, you can make a new account.

As for keeping track of your posts, you’re new here and don’t know the ropes yet. Click on (almost) any user’s name next to any of their posts, and you’ll see a page with some information about them, if they’ve chosen to put it in, and 2 lists: 1 of all the threads they’ve posted in, and another of all the threads they’ve started.

There are a few posters whose names link to something else – you just need to get a profile URL and type their name instead of the other user.

Also, if there is a space in the user’s name, clicking on their name will take you to an error page – manually replace the spaces in their name in the page URL with dashes (-) to see their profile.

Thank you for taking a Randomex Crash Course!

You can find more helpful material in the “stickied” threads at the top of the Coffee Room and in this thread (and the links there): [this thread]

    Also: This user exists:

(has no activity whatsoever [registered 4 years ago, same as samthenylic, but probably unrelated])

    This may need studying…

    And there’s this

    Work progresses…
