Whats more, I’m quite sure you’ll find that even in the way that you want to compare it, dog owners to car owners, that far more car owners had dangerous incidents than dog owners. But some people might have some kind of irrational phobia, like fear of flying, or of snakes. But I can’t explain why this phobia would be more prevalent in the frum community
May 23, 2011 2:19 am at 2:19 am in reply to: Why don't jews have dogs? It is clear in the gemara and shulchan aruch that #770416quark2Memberpac man the number of cars is irrelevent. My comparison is between ONE PERSON who engages in the activity of either driving a car or crossing the street and his chances of getting hurt, something which most people do without a second thought, and ONE PERSON being around a dog for the time period of one year, and his chances of getting hurt.
I am pretty sure that you’ll find the former to be a lot more dangerous, yet you would still drive a car, and you would still cross the street. It follows logically that you would also not mind to own a dog, unless you let irrational fears get in the way
I am NOT trying to compare the number of people who got hurt in a car accident in any particular year, and the number of people who got hurt by a dog in that same year, which would be like comparing apples to oranges
quark2MemberOh. Thanks

It is clear in the gemara and shulchan aruch that #770414quark2MemberIf you look up the statistics you will probably find that crossing the street or driving in a car ONE TIME is more dangerous than owning or being around a dog for a year

R Shmuel can you tell us which REASON you are talking about?
As for reason to have one, there are many. Also, like i said above, pets reduce stress improve mood etc. (here are the links to 2 of those studies, that show that pets reduce stress lower hi blood pressure etc.,you can probably find more with google; I think that being healthy is very much with the “ruach hatorah”, don’t you?
According to this study pets can actually ADD YEARS TO YOUR LIFE. Refusal to own a pet can be a matter of PIKUACH NEFESH in some cases.
no outside links, please

It is clear in the gemara and shulchan aruch that #770378quark2MemberWell I personally used to have a very slight fear, actually more like a nervousness than a fear, around dogs. I completely overcame this fear/nervousness in believe it or not of all places Israel, where I got used to being around many dogs in the street, both on leashes and mot

May 22, 2011 3:52 am at 3:52 am in reply to: Why don't jews have dogs? It is clear in the gemara and shulchan aruch that #770364quark2Memberpac man, where is this kesef mishnah? the Rambam in TT actually supports what i said. the Rambam in nizkei mamom is just quoting the mishnah, like he does in many places. The Tur and Shulchan Aruch both change that mishnah to “kelev ra”. I’m sure that the Tur and Shulchan Aruch both knew the Rambam that you mentioned, quite well.
And your comparison to monkeys is so utterly ridiculous I’m not even going to comment on it
May 22, 2011 3:40 am at 3:40 am in reply to: Why don't jews have dogs? It is clear in the gemara and shulchan aruch that #770363quark2Memberalso studies have shown that pets can help reduce stress, improve mood, relieve depression, and improve overall health. just more reasons to own a pet (i’ll try to post a link to the study soon)

May 17, 2011 12:40 am at 12:40 am in reply to: Westgate pizza of Lakewood – bring on the jewish manga! #767134quark2MemberAnyway, maybe i am over reacting a little here. The drawings are cute, and who cares what the japs use it for. Who cares that they came up with that style of drawing first.
Need to think this one over a bit…
May 17, 2011 12:38 am at 12:38 am in reply to: Westgate pizza of Lakewood – bring on the jewish manga! #767133quark2Memberi havent read any american comics in a long time, but im pretty sure that most of them are kid friendly. Unless they’re made specially….
May 17, 2011 12:09 am at 12:09 am in reply to: Westgate pizza of Lakewood – bring on the jewish manga! #767131quark2MemberAlso it doesn’t have much to do with what they were thinking. My point was, that these goyish comics are the prime influence of what some day may be considered mainstream jewish art [the pictures were of jewish boys, BTW]. If you don’t have a problem with that, fine. some people may be more sensitive to this kind of thing than others
May 17, 2011 12:04 am at 12:04 am in reply to: Westgate pizza of Lakewood – bring on the jewish manga! #767130quark2MemberI see your point, but actually it looked more like it was drawn by a proffesional artist and bought by the store. And its highly unlikely that a young jewish kid who was never exposed to manga would draw a picture that happens to look like manga.
And manga is not some kids cartoon like bob the builder. People of every age read manga in japan, and most of the time the comics are very adult themed (you dont have to read manga to know this).

quark2MemberAnd to all you smart people who need to know why i came here first instead of asking a rav, yes, i assumed that the knowledge of the tens if not hundreds of people who visit this forum every day would be far greater then the knowledge of a single individual. Ciao
quark2Member@mother in israel what you said that its refuah i doubt it. Refuah means to cure someone who is sick. Lifting weights is only building muscle. It is not a cure for anything in any way. It is not refuah.
And what you said about uvdah dchol, can you explain to me what makes it uvdah dchol? I mean, if lifting weights is indeed mutar on shabbos, then why is it any more uvdah dchol than uvdah dshabbos?
Anyway, even though i strongly suspect that it is mutar meikar didinah, I may still refrain from doing it for the simple reason that it doesn’t feel ‘shabbosdik’.

quark2Memberthis seems to be a very lomdishah question. Il need a smoke to mull things over…
quark2MemberNothing wrong with it. If shes attracted to him, go for it. Many women are attracted to age, in the same way men are attracted to youth. Its because age is related to status, and women are attracted to status, whereas men are attracted to looks
