I find that the Jastrow is a lot more useful
qawsMemberIf you get a text that a big gadol is sick, before forwarding the text, try looking around online to see if he is still sick.
qawsMemberI was on a JetBlue flight a couple of weeks ago and one of the snack choices was Linden’s Chocolate Chip cookies. The CRC said that the hechsher, ‘Ner Tamid K’ is NOT reliable.

qawsMemberWhat’s the deal with powdered milk and with hard cheese. I have heard that it is impossible for powdered milk and hard cheese to be made from non-cow milk. If this is so, why don’t people eat hard cheese that isn’t cholov yisroel? Why don’t people eat products with powdered milk? Did you know that hersheys uses powdered milk in their chocolate bars?
qawsMemberAll I can say is WOW. This looks like a major project for someone to undertake. Tizku l’mitzvos to this alumnus of the yeshiva who has thought of such an original way to raise money for his yeshiva. I am so inspired that I will imy”h send this sample email to my whole email list to continue this great work. Yasher Koach!
qawsMemberI have a question – people who are makpid on not eating gebrokts, eat gebrokts on the last day. Why do these people not eat gebrokts the first 7 days? Because they are worried that there might be some uncooked flour and if it has contact with water, it will possibly make it chametz. So on the 8th day when they eat gebrokts, they are essentially making their pots chametz. How can they use those same pots for pesach the next year – chametz was cooked in the pot less then a year before!
qawsMemberWhat arindus pointed out should also be noted. Some people only have email access with no internet access so if they got an email with a complete news story, then great but if they only get the headline and a few lines, its a teaser.
Maybe there should be an option for people to choose what format the email should be?
qawsMemberTomim thye – no, it is called PHAD. Its brand new. If you google ‘join the PHAD’, you should find their website.
qawsMemberWhy was the format changed to only a few lines of the story and then a “read more” link? It defeats the whole purpose of why someone might want the emails. If they need to click a link to read the whole story, let them go to the website in the first place. Some people want the whole story in the email so that they can read it in their email.
qawsMemberI heard that there’s this new company called PHAD that started recently.

qawsMemberI can tell you from experience from myself and my classmates that its not a clear cut rule that all 1st year guys should go to israel. If everything is equal in all areas, then israel is great for most guys because kedushas eretz yisroel is unmatched anywhere else. But the problem is that very often, not everything is equal. A yeshiva in the US might have better rebbeim for this guy, better environment, better controlled gashmiyus etc. In Israel, while many guys grow from the non learning activities such as visiting kivrei tzadikim, there are also many guys who get very hurt from the gashmiyus. This is mainly because there is a tremendous amount of freedom for a boy straight out of high school and since he doesn’t have the supervision which he has in the US, it can often spiral out of control.
Why does a guy need to go to Israel right away? Why can’t he learn in the US for a few years and then go to Israel if he so desires?
It is a tremendous mistake to think that every guy needs to go to israel his first year out of high school. It is terrible for some guys and the bottem line is that there are amazing yeshivos in the US.
You can argue and say that its good for a guy to get away from home. The answer is that there are many many yeshivos outside of New York which are amazing. A guy who goes to a different state for yeshiva still can come home a few times a year for bein hazmanim and his parents can still keep somewhat of an eye on their kid being that he won’t be gone for a year straight.

July 19, 2009 11:08 am at 11:08 am in reply to: Credit Card “Shtick/Fraud” – is it stealing? #650637qawsMemberRegarding the coins from the US mint “shtick” (see the above link): As far as I know, the reason the mint “sells” coins like this is because they want to get them back into circulation. If you buy them for the purpose of giving them all directly to the bank, could it be g’neivas daas?
qawsMemberCherrybim- most yeshivos that are of considerable size, don’t have the administrator’s going out to the store and buying soda. Thay have it delivered etc.
qawsMemberIf you would like to help out a yeshiva, offer the yeshiva your services. If they have a mailing that needs to be done, offer to help out. If your expertise is in recycling cans, offer to take the yeshiva’s cans/bottles and recycle them and give that $ to the yeshiva. If you know someone who can get the yeshiva a good deal on paper towels, tell your local yeshiva. These things can help the yeshiva in so many ways. It seems like buying paper towels is a small thing but think about the hug picture. The yeshiva goes thru thousands of cases of paper towels a year. If you can get them a good deal (or in anything, doesn’t have to be paper towels!) Theu will save A LOT of money and YOU will get SO MUCH s’char. These are the real ‘pachim ktanim’ that make a difference.
qawsMemberThere are many yeshivas that have a work-study program. Basically, the boys (this is usually done for beis medrash guys) who can’t pay full tuition, are assigned a job in the yeshiva, such as turning off the lights at night, serving food at meals, organizing the seforim etc. This saves the yeshivos a lot of $ because otherwise, they would need to be paying people to do these things.
Instead of the yeshivos having a recycling program which only will give them a few dollars, by having systems in place such as making sure the lights are off at night and the air conditioning/heat is not on in rooms that aren’t being used etc, the yeshivos will save A LOT more $ then recycling a few bottles.
Its sad but There are yeshivos that have MANY parents who are paying very little in tuition and who just don’t help out at yeshiva events etc.
qawsMemberI believe that there is a halacha that if you make the cut in the challah deep enough that if you would hold the challah from one end and the challah would break, then its not considered a shaleim.
qawsMemberI have seen people cut the end of the challah off and put it to the side and then cut the rest. The weird thing is that they don’t serve that end piece. Is there a minhag to do this?
qawsMemberMoish- Yeshiva Chofetz chaim has many many branches all over the US and Canada. I really think that there would be a branch that is good for you. Many of the branches have high schools that are not at all “yeshivish” kids, many of the kids are more “modern”. If you would like more info on any of the branches (Manalapan,St.Louis,Monsey,Miami, milwaukeeWits,LA,Vancouver,Rochester,Brooklyn,Dallas,Roslyn etc), I emailed mod 42 with my email info so email him and he will give you my email.
qawsMemberThat’s funny. I got that as a text fwd a few times from a friend.
qawsMemberSpueak – how about in a sleepaway camp. If there is only one minyan in the camp and the camp is in middle of nowhere, would this apply?
qawsMemberWhat’s with these mods? 42 can’t get enough kugel and 55 can’t get enough chulent! and 72(me)can’t get enough coffee
Do the mods get food at home?
qawsMemberThere is a similar problem with chain text messages. Last year, a friend asked me to send out a tehillim text for his grandmother, she was very sick. I realized that there was a problem when I received the same text 2 MONTHS later.
There is another problem. If people get many of these text messages asking for tehilim to be said, and they don’t say tehilim, then their sensitivity gets lowered majorly.
I asked a prominent rav what the solution is. He said that I should ask the people on my “texting list” if they would like to receive these tehilim texts. If they say yes, then continue sending them because they will say tehilim.
A possible solution to both of these issues (texts and emails) is to verify your info before sending it and you should put the date on the text so if someone receives a text asking to say tehilim and its dated from a month ago, they will know to disregard it.
qawsMemberTo get the nightly text reminders, text the word “sefira” to 41411

February 24, 2009 4:02 am at 4:02 am in reply to: Chofetz Chaim: It's not just a Yeshiva. It's a way of life. #989125qawsMemberStriving- from what I understand- cc people are as varied as other yeshivas regarding movies/internet and its very possible that less people have it then in other yeshivos.
I was looking aroind online to see if cc has a website and I couldn’t find one. So that should be a good sign!
February 23, 2009 10:13 pm at 10:13 pm in reply to: Chofetz Chaim: It's not just a Yeshiva. It's a way of life. #989115qawsMemberMy friend is in Chofetz Chaim and I asked him for something unique about Chofetz Chaim and he told me the following:
They also have elementry schools in Brooklyn, Miami, Las Vegas etc.
With more in the works!
So it seems from what my friend told me that Chofetz Chaim really is “a way of life”!
qawsMemberJothar- what is the geder that the yeshivos should have in making their auctions? Is it really wrong for a kiruv org that is trying to be mikareiv people, to have an auction with “gashmius prizes”? Are they really contradicting one another? So then all auctions should be stopped?
We see that rabbonim don’t really come out against auctions so it must be that the rabbonim hold that this isn’t an issue. So what is the geder?
Is there really a problem?
qawsMemberOk Mod, here I go, following your rules!
The reason I started this thread is because: as everyone knows, the yeshivas are all in major financial trouble. I noticed that of the yeshivas who do chinese auctions, some give out free gifts (like http://ytcteam.org/auction/index.php?PARTNER=15 ) and some don’t. I’m guessing that the reason some auctions don’t is because they feel that they won’t raise more money by giving out a free gift. That is why I started this thread. If people (everyone in the CR) would post if getting a free gift makes them spend more money, then we would have to tell the yeshivas that we did research and then the yeshivas would all start offering these gifts. I’m just doing my part to help all of the yeshivas who are suffering financially.
qawsMemberIt seems from this site: http://ytcteam.org/auction/index.php?PARTNER=15 that if you spend $250, you could get a set of the artcroll pocket chumashim, which costs like $100 normally (sounds like a pretty good deal!).
so the question is like this, should all yeshivas who have auctions offer these free gifts? Do you spend more money then you would have because you know that you are getting a gift that’s worth like $100 and in addition, you have a chance to win the other prizes?
qawsMemberI just saw a auction site which has these free gifts if you spend a certain amount of money. http://ytcteam.org/auction/index.php?PARTNER=15
January 20, 2009 11:08 pm at 11:08 pm in reply to: Daven With A Hat BeYichidus or Without it with a Minyan #1081680qawsMemberWhat about bentching? Are you supposed to wear a hat? Jacket? Both?
January 20, 2009 11:07 pm at 11:07 pm in reply to: Daven With A Hat BeYichidus or Without it with a Minyan #1081678qawsMemberI asked this question to a poseik and he said that its better to daven with a minyan w/o a hat and jacket.
qawsMemberThis is a major problem. The yeshivos are all doing the same fundraisers (the raffles, chinese auctions etc.), and they are all in bad financial shape. The yeshivos need some new, original ideas. Anyone have any?
qawsMemberI heard that a major poseik said that starting to smoke is assur. If you already smoke, then its obviously dangerous but its not assur because you are addicted and its not your fault because the addiction takes over your self control.
qawsMemberMany yeshiva’s give you a BTL just for being in the yeshiva. With a BTL, you can get into many masters programs.
qawsMemberI agree with the previous poster who said that they should sell yw caps, t-shirts etc. That would be so cool!
qawsMemberHappy birthday mod! Are you inviting everyone to your birthday party?
qawsMemberMoish: how are you usually not around during the week? I thought you have a cast and therefor you need to stay home?
January 9, 2009 2:52 pm at 2:52 pm in reply to: What can WE do to contribute to Operation Cast Lead??? #631075qawsMemberWe should all remember that even though most of the soldiers are residents of E”Y, there are a bunch who live in America. Just think about the guy who lives on your street in America, he is now in Gaza, potentially giving up his life for E”Y, even though he doesn’t live there. We should daven with extra kavana that ALL the soldiers are matzliach.
qawsMemberMods- we really appreciate all of your efforts in approving posts as fast as you can.
On behalf of all of us – Thank you
