Maybe because thats what was available in Europe? My grandparents used to tell me, they only did 3 things to get ready for peseach(unlike the thousands these days)! 1. undo hem of tablecloth, wash and resew 2. get out the pot and kasher the dishes 3. get new broom!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They didnt have much, but was easier then having all these gashmius things!!!
