Its a moshol!
All of the politicians in eretz yisroel are holding onto a get to divorce us chas v’sholom from the torah, and each one says he is the one who brought it from medinas hayam.

eek & PAA: I seem to recall one of the classical mussar seforim brings that medrash in a context implying it is referring to destroying the world by doing aveiros.
OP: I also care about the environment. It just isn’t the only thing I care about, and that is the disagreement I have with the environmentalists.

Maybe all the acceleration is in the last second.
Maybe they can only sustain the acceleration for a short time like a fraction of a second?

I could not respond before, but magically orchestrated a pre-purim confusion of names so that you could see they ignore everyone.

popa_bar_abbaParticipantIt’s ironic but the ideology that today opposes Torah shebealpeh for girls opposed 120 years agobthe creation of Bais Yaacov or any formal Jewish education for girls
It’s more ironic that you think you are aligned with the people who started beis yaakov, while if they were aligned with you, they would have done what you are advocating.

popa_bar_abbaParticipantThe Goq/PAA: You stole half of that from a Purim Pashkevil put up in KBY last year, which said that all the Chareidim have to hear Zachor from a Hesder guy because Chareidim are Patur from the army.
Nu, I made the joke two years ago re machatzis hashekel http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/do-chareidim-have-to
popa_bar_abbaParticipantLet’s just say, its more dangerous than MBP.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantAt one time smallpox was. Or hunger. Or plague. Or wolves.
Now that we’ve conquered all of those, people mostly die of old age. And we complain about it and call it heart disease.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantA friend of mine was once smoking marijuana and then someone told him its assur, and he didn’t even stop.
That’s what marijuana does to you–makes you not even care if something is assur.
So how can such a thing be muttar?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantSome old versions of the chofetz chaim were printed by his almanah and state that anyone else who prints it is oiver on almanah v’yasom lo s’anun
popa_bar_abbaParticipantOk, here’s a tax related question.
If an accountant posts on the internet that they will answer anyone’s tax questions posted in a thread, does that create a client relationship?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantBecause the gimmick was good enough to get you in the door once.
Then you were like: that’s an expensive deli sandwich, and kind of cheap on the deli, and not the best deli either, and I’ll go to shnitzy now.
February 25, 2015 5:29 am at 5:29 am in reply to: Eating a shabbos meal over somebody's house from #1061016popa_bar_abbaParticipantHere’s this:
How many CR poster weddings have you been to?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantAh! Reminds me!
When I was in yeshiva, there was an altah bochur I was friends with. He used to always propose on the first date.
He figured: if she says no–no harm, no foul. If she says yes–she’s crazy and he’d better know that so he can break up with her.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantAlternatively, being poor makes you not MO.
Suppose you are MO and poor and live in Far Rockaway.
Can you afford to send your kids to HAFTR? Not by a mile. Darchei? Much more likely.
So you send your kids to Darchei, and they are no longer MO.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantSource?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI dunno Akuperma, MO seems much more wealthy on average than the average secular American. I don’t think your math adds up.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantOne day I would like to take oomis on a date (my wife will join). We’ll go to all the popular lounges in Manhattan on a Thursday night and scope out all the dates, and then if she still has this opinion I’ll respect it.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantHalf day. The other half day you pretend you aren’t going to college.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantThe inyan of drinking purim night is to be so hung over purim day that it is clear you are drinking only for the mitzva.
February 22, 2015 2:58 am at 2:58 am in reply to: Court filings and documents: Obtaining electronic copies #1061023popa_bar_abbaParticipantI thought this would be a thread asking to compare using electronic sources to going down to the courthouse and reading it in paper.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantIs there a name for this series of posts?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantHe isn’t the satmar rebbe. Rav Aaron is, you racist!
popa_bar_abbaParticipantWhat do you think the edited in my post last year was?
popa_bar_abbaParticipant.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI once knew a family, who had two cars: one for him to drive to work, and one for her to drive to work.
Then they got really really rich, and both stopped working, and got rid of one of their cars because they take helicopters everywhere instead.
One day they met Akuperma. He made fun of them for being so poor they only have one car.
Americans only know one language because we have made our culture and language so dominant that there is little need to know any other language anymore. And where there is need, we pay someone else to know it for us.
February 20, 2015 3:49 pm at 3:49 pm in reply to: ZipCar vs. Car2Go and other car share/rental services #1136585popa_bar_abbaParticipantWhy not just buy the car, and then you don’t have to play around with these naarishe gimicks and phone apples.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantAs Mr. Perma noted, treif chains don’t do well in North America.
The reason is this: The value of chain branding is that people can expect the same product as lat time. Kosher restaurants all have their own reputation anyway, so nothing is gained from the branding. After that, there’s just no reason to tie yourself down to the Mcdonalds way of preparing and wrapping a burger and their menu, and pricing, etc, etc.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantThe earth is getting warmer whether you believe it or not.
I don’t. They are “manually adjusting” the records in order to reach the conclusion that there is warming, based on their theories. It’s a full on scam, and anyone who says otherwise is lying or an idiot.
popa_bar_abbaParticipant??? ?? ???????… ???? ???? ??? ???
govt programs are not “matanos”. Matanos are given willingly. So I don’t think that applies.
I don’t think they are quite gezeila either, since you aren’t the one stealing it.
Perhaps it is like lokeiach min haganav?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI think I’ll bookmark this thread. Never know when something like this could come in handy.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantOk, here is the fare breakdown in NYC:
Yellow cab:
2.50 base.
2.50/mile and 50 cents per minute in traffic.
80 cents – 1.30 surcharges based on time of day
15-20% tip.
Uber:
3.00 base
2.15/mile and 40 cents per minute in traffic
no surcharges, and no tip.
Charlie, I don’t think we’ll be needing statistical analysis for this one.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantUber is not really used to save money over a car service. A trip from flatbush to BP that cost me 15$ on car service will cost me 17-18 on Uber.
From which intersection to which intersection? Let’s price it right now on their website.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantIt’s right there in Uber’s marketing materials. Not exactly something to have opinions about.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI also forgot to mention that the tip is included in the Uber pricing, so you really need to add however much you usually tip to compare. And also add the dirty comments about how you are a cheap jew and don’t tip enough.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantWhen I have checked Uber’s prices, they have always been much higher than the local livery cab services. And my neighborhood is full of livery cabs.
How many times did you check?
You’re a statistician–what is the confidence interval on your results? How would you balance that against the easy ability to check the prices online and see that the base price is nominally cheaper.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantYes. Except when there is high demand, in which case they tell you how much extra it will cost. Since it is usually like half as much as a taxi, I take Uber unless it is more than like 1.75x the base rate.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantWell, for half the price of a taxi or car service, you can have a clean car and a polite driver and a shorter wait time.
So you just have to consider whether you’d rather pay more for a smelly dirty car with a driver who will talk on his phone and play strange radio stations loudly and make you wait longer and then be mad at you if you take a minute to come outside.
It’s a big decision.
