OP: I also care about the environment. It just isn’t the only thing I care about, and that is the disagreement I have with the environmentalists.

It’s ironic but the ideology that today opposes Torah shebealpeh for girls opposed 120 years agobthe creation of Bais Yaacov or any formal Jewish education for girls

It’s more ironic that you think you are aligned with the people who started beis yaakov, while if they were aligned with you, they would have done what you are advocating.

Alternatively, being poor makes you not MO.

Suppose you are MO and poor and live in Far Rockaway.

So you send your kids to Darchei, and they are no longer MO.

I once knew a family, who had two cars: one for him to drive to work, and one for her to drive to work.

Then they got really really rich, and both stopped working, and got rid of one of their cars because they take helicopters everywhere instead.

One day they met Akuperma. He made fun of them for being so poor they only have one car.

Americans only know one language because we have made our culture and language so dominant that there is little need to know any other language anymore. And where there is need, we pay someone else to know it for us.

As Mr. Perma noted, treif chains don’t do well in North America.

The reason is this: The value of chain branding is that people can expect the same product as lat time. Kosher restaurants all have their own reputation anyway, so nothing is gained from the branding. After that, there’s just no reason to tie yourself down to the Mcdonalds way of preparing and wrapping a burger and their menu, and pricing, etc, etc.

The earth is getting warmer whether you believe it or not.

I don’t. They are “manually adjusting” the records in order to reach the conclusion that there is warming, based on their theories. It’s a full on scam, and anyone who says otherwise is lying or an idiot.

Ok, here is the fare breakdown in NYC:

    Yellow cab:

    2.50 base.

2.50/mile and 50 cents per minute in traffic.

80 cents – 1.30 surcharges based on time of day

    15-20% tip.

    Uber:

    3.00 base

2.15/mile and 40 cents per minute in traffic

    no surcharges, and no tip.

Charlie, I don’t think we’ll be needing statistical analysis for this one.

Uber is not really used to save money over a car service. A trip from flatbush to BP that cost me 15$ on car service will cost me 17-18 on Uber.

From which intersection to which intersection? Let’s price it right now on their website.

It’s right there in Uber’s marketing materials. Not exactly something to have opinions about.

I also forgot to mention that the tip is included in the Uber pricing, so you really need to add however much you usually tip to compare. And also add the dirty comments about how you are a cheap jew and don’t tip enough.

When I have checked Uber’s prices, they have always been much higher than the local livery cab services. And my neighborhood is full of livery cabs.

How many times did you check?

You’re a statistician–what is the confidence interval on your results? How would you balance that against the easy ability to check the prices online and see that the base price is nominally cheaper.

in reply to: Uber vs. car service (or taxi) #1134959
    popa_bar_abba
    Participant

Yes. Except when there is high demand, in which case they tell you how much extra it will cost. Since it is usually like half as much as a taxi, I take Uber unless it is more than like 1.75x the base rate.

in reply to: Uber vs. car service (or taxi) #1134957
    popa_bar_abba
    Participant

Well, for half the price of a taxi or car service, you can have a clean car and a polite driver and a shorter wait time.

So you just have to consider whether you’d rather pay more for a smelly dirty car with a driver who will talk on his phone and play strange radio stations loudly and make you wait longer and then be mad at you if you take a minute to come outside.

    It’s a big decision.
