But lo there surges forth a shriek,
from hill to hill, from creek to creek.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantRB: Elaborate please.
January 17, 2011 4:03 am at 4:03 am in reply to: Know anything about getting into law school? #748272popa_bar_abbaParticipantOf course. But the numbers only say as much as they say.
So, what do they say? What percentage falls into what percentage?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantWho cares if it is rude?
Just think about if you want the consequences.
Do you want the rabbi to think you are deliberately snubbing him?
January 17, 2011 3:55 am at 3:55 am in reply to: Know anything about getting into law school? #748270popa_bar_abbaParticipantyou have to know how to write for everything! everything involves reaction papers, term papers and that is the majority of teh grade.
Why would you say that?
Most law school classes are graded solely on a single final exam with no papers.
January 17, 2011 3:53 am at 3:53 am in reply to: Know anything about getting into law school? #748269popa_bar_abbaParticipantAlso,
It is commonly held that NYU (almost?) never takes BTL’s.
If you have high 170s, you will definitely get into Fordham with money, but you will be selling yourself short by doing so.
Really, don’t let these guys scare you about the writing. I know plenty of yeshiva guys with no college who went to law school. I never heard one complaining about lacking writing skills.
If Fordham did a study that most BTL’s are in the bottom half of the class, I would want to know what the numbers were. The bottom half of the class is 50% of the class. If 60% of BTL’s were in the bottom half, that is not so shocking as to make it a very big deal.
January 17, 2011 3:46 am at 3:46 am in reply to: Know anything about getting into law school? #748267popa_bar_abbaParticipantI don’t think you need to worry about the writing part.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantGood point
January 17, 2011 1:45 am at 1:45 am in reply to: Know anything about getting into law school? #748262popa_bar_abbaParticipantMany people get an LLM in Tax from a “good” school to beef up their creds after earning a JD from a weaker school.
This second degree is commonly earned from NYU.

popa_bar_abbaParticipantWelcome; what are you in for?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantMonsey, Lakewood, Passaic.
January 16, 2011 8:52 pm at 8:52 pm in reply to: A Lady In The Grocery Said Leave It As A Mystery #729261popa_bar_abbaParticipantMy grandmother has been 21 her whole life!
Yes, some of my high school friends were also.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI like bris food. I wish I could go to a bris every day and leave before the speeches. Maybe I’ll become a mohel.
Which reminds me, my friend is a mohel, and once was at a bris his father was doing (his father is also a mohel), and they both made a bagel sandwich, whereupon the father pulled out two diapers for them to wrap the sandwiches in.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI think you should leave without telling them, and pretend you never left when you come back.
With enough reinforcement, they’ll block out the memory and it will never make a difference.
January 16, 2011 8:09 pm at 8:09 pm in reply to: Know anything about getting into law school? #748258popa_bar_abbaParticipantThe same person I referred to before with the BTL who didn’t get into a top 6, is doing really well in his top 14 school. His professors seem to be fine with “mamish no contract”.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantActually, the best part is there was no segulah.
January 14, 2011 10:10 pm at 10:10 pm in reply to: Know anything about getting into law school? #748245popa_bar_abbaParticipantAgain, I think you should pay for a consultant.
Also, if you are thinking about next year- forget it, you’re too late.
Also, you should really expand your horizon beyond NY.
Think Chicago (x2), Philadelphia, Detroit, D.C. (Besides for Boston and New Haven)
January 14, 2011 8:01 pm at 8:01 pm in reply to: If I had it all to do over, I'd do _______________ for Parnasa #729507popa_bar_abbaParticipantdeiyezooger:
Use a different browser; either Firefox or chrome. Both of them have built in spell check. Any words that are underlined in red are not recognized, and you can right click on it to see suggestions.
So, for example, in this post, “deiyezooger” is underlined red. There are no suggestions.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantSoldiers are required to wear a uniform because it destroys their individuality and melds them into a cohesive whole.
I am not in favor of doing that to my kids.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantalways here:
care to teach us how to play chinese auctions and win like that?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI have to post on this thread what I post on all these threads.
You cannot pretend that learning part time is the same as learning full time.
You cannot pretend that learning for 5 years is the same as learning for 10.
You are perfectly entitled to believe what you want about the relative importance of learning and secular studies, but it behooves you to state clearly your position on that, and not try to make as if you have bridged the gap.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantItche:
You college guys are all the same. The comma goes after “lo”!
It seems you are correct; I forgot what the mishna said.
However, the halacha still is that you are allowed to wear shaatnez to try it on.
I’ll try to find a source to post.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantHmmm. Is it that bad?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantWhat does Babylon have to do with this?
Also, care to expound on what you think this motive is?
What is the goal of this conspiracy?
January 14, 2011 4:57 pm at 4:57 pm in reply to: Know anything about getting into law school? #748238popa_bar_abbaParticipantYes, you are not guaranteed to get in. I know of a someone with a 176 who did not get in to any of the top 6 with a BTL.
You should hire a admissions consultant.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantBowwow:
Usually, nobody offers to direct me to a seat.
Also, often the seats that are available have name plates and the seats that are not don’t have name plates.
Also, if I come late, there is more of a reason why I can sit anywhere and assume the guy is not coming.
Also, are you indignant because there is an inyan of “makom kavua” or because it is “your seat”?
Also, I am not brash at all. You don’t own the seat. And if in your shul the people consider it that they do own the seat, you should have a sign on the door that says “KHAL ANSHEI S’DOM” so I’ll know not to come.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantBlinky, thank you for posting that.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantBowwow:
I have never sat in the Rav’s seat, but to be fair, I never wanted to. So I don’t know what I would do if I wanted to.
If there is a talis bag on the seat, I would not move it and sit down.
If there are name plates on the seat, I would sit there anyway.
I think I am acting fine and normally. I think I am permitted to sit down even though I am a guest, and every seat is as likely to be someone’s seat as the next.
If you don’t like it, daven at home.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI am not aware of any other usernames for Wolfish and Kapusta. I only know what the mods have posted.

popa_bar_abbaParticipantI believe in the “guest does whatever he wants” rule.
When I go to a shul which I don’t usually daven in, I just sit down wherever I like and it is too bad on whoever usually sits there.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantHow? In what way?
Have you contacted the editor about this?
January 14, 2011 6:13 am at 6:13 am in reply to: Any ideas how to get to israel ben hazmanim without spending sooo much money #728008popa_bar_abbaParticipantSounds like you should sell them for money. There is a popular jewish deals blog which has forums where you can sell miles.
You can investigate the buyer to make sure you trust them by looking up their onlysimchas page and finding common friends.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantpopa? whats with the third party? look like the CR is getting to you. “Shenl!” go grab a decaf coffee. Ad a shot of bourbon to cool the nerves.
Popa always talks in third person. That is because the Popa personality has morphed into its own existence next to the regular person of the guy who writes Popa.
I do drink decaf, and bourbon is good. But I am really more of a scotch guy.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantIn todays world, even people who go to college are frequently supported by their parents for several years until they finish their degrees and get jobs.
I don’t think this is a reason to leave.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantpopa–twins then? Seriously…happy 4 u.
Yes, engaged to twins.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantAmerican Eagle.
Hate to say, I don’t recognize that brand.
popa_bar_abbaParticipants2021 makes a good point.
Popa anyway thinks uniforms are stupid.
The way you dress is very important to how you feel. I think we should let kids dress in a way that will make them feel good.
I am a guy and don’t really understand the relationship women have with clothes. However, when I put something nice on, I feel good about myself. When I dress formally, I feel formal.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantHomeowner:
Firstly, I am from the school that does not believe chemical imbalance is the cause of most normal mental illness.
Secondly, stigma’s are not random. The reason people fear mental illness is because you can be hurt by it. You are less hurt by your spouse being fat- especially if you knew beforehand.
As it happens, I think the stigma attached to mental illness goes beyond what is rational.
January 14, 2011 2:33 am at 2:33 am in reply to: Mathematical Expressions in Sefira Counting #941758popa_bar_abbaParticipantOnce, I counted the wrong day knowing it was the wrong day but with kavana to be yotzei. I was actually wrong and it was the right day.
Was I yotzei?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI’m glad for you. Everything else should work out for you this well also.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantPopa, uve got to get out more…roots is the canadian ae
Apparently a lot more. I don’t know what ae is either.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantTo be fair, it is talking about an anti-Semitic tax.
January 14, 2011 2:09 am at 2:09 am in reply to: "Shidduchim" I feel like I hit An Huge Iceberg! #728296popa_bar_abbaParticipantIf u like, I am willing to talk with you. ask the mod to email me your info and phone numbers, and best time to call.
Are you suggesting she speak to a professional?
(Or are you actually that type of professional and my joke is not funny at all.)
popa_bar_abbaParticipantPopa has a rule about baal tashchis:
I am not a garbage. It is no less baal tashchis for me to eat something when I do not want to eat, than to throw it out.
January 14, 2011 1:55 am at 1:55 am in reply to: If I had it all to do over, I'd do _______________ for Parnasa #729488popa_bar_abbaParticipantCurrently- Long haul trucker.
If I could do it again- Speech therapist.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantPopa does not know why, but thinks it is a positive development.
Divorce is better than a bad marriage. Until now, divorce was such taboo that probably many people stayed in miserable marriages that they should have left.
Also, the option of divorce is what makes working on your marriage possible. G-d created divorce for a reason. I think part of that reason is that people feel more able to deal with things when they do so willingly rather than being forced to.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantBy watering down the definition, and thereby, perception of mental illness.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantIt is not a problem at all.
You are allowed to wear shaatnez to try it on.
Generally, you are allowed to wear shaatnez for any reason which is not that you want to benefit from wearing it.
So, for example the mishna says you can wear shaatnez if you are doing so while crossing a border and trying to avoid paying taxes on your merchandise by pretending it is your clothes.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantWolf and Sam:
You are saying much the same thing, Sam has the actual codification of the rule.
That sounds pretty good to me.
