popa_bar_abbaParticipant
18 is pretty reasonable.
I would certainly want to heavily supervise the drinking of anyone under 18.
However, completely withholding all drinks from them can often lead to some serious backlash.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantScrabble is not writing if it is regular scrabble. The travel edition where the pieces snap in, is likely a problem of writing.
However, there is a different problem with scrabble, which is that you usually write down the score, since it is hard to keep track of. It is generally assur to do things on shabbos which usually involve writing.
I have heard of a heter that since we only play on shabbos, we never write down the score. You should consult with a competent authority regarding this.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI didn’t know girls really cared about looks at all.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantThe money is not a problem. The people who quote the chayei odom do not know how to learn. The chayei odom is talking about a situation where they were actually gambling and the fake money represented real money.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantBecause all my siblings know my username. And I know all of their usernames.
observanteen: Can I actually do that? Will seminaries give you scholarships if you threaten to go to lower ranked seminaries, like with universities?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantThe old joke is:
Why do we lein parts of the megilla in eicha trop?
So that even the people who like being sad can be “happy” on purim.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantpopa- are you my brother?
No, sorry. But I’m flattered. (Should I be?)
Besides, I now contend that I am a high school girl on the way to BJJJJJJJJJJJ. (If they give me a full scholarship anyway- otherwise it’s bnos sara.)
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI’m skinny. I worked for years to lose the weight. It is a constant work to keep it off.
I am so happy to be thin. I would give most anything not to be fat again.
Now that I’m going to BJJJJJJJJJJ, I am going to get the best shidduch ever. Probably my husband will be the best guy in lakewood.
popa_bar_abbaParticipant???? ???? ?????
popa_bar_abbaParticipant?? ??? ???
popa_bar_abbaParticipantHealth:
Yes, I think there should be responsible supervision of teens (and adults). Especially kids should not be let to disappear for hours with no supervision of what they are drinking. The best is for them to be at your seuda where you can keep track of their drinking and cut them off, or by their rebbe’s house (if he is responsible).
But I don’t see that as being the argument advanced here. I see people arguing that the entire mitzva is inappropriate to the extent it means drunkenness.
In my yeshiva, they used to make sure that every highly intoxicated person had someone watching them, and a garbage can.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantno, it was a mistype.
???? ???? ?????? ?????? ?? ??? ???
I’m going off ????.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantIt seems he did drink again the next year, since if he had stopped drinking, there would be no reason for him not to come and share the seuda again. (I can’t imagine he stopped having a seuda.)
I assume they were just afraid to have the seuda together. I also never make my seuda with any amoraim.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI’m not sure what your definition of “ad dlo yado” is, but it is apparently drunk enough that an amorah would cut off another amorah’s head.
I have never even gotten close to that, but I try every year.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI thought you’d like it. I’d been waiting for a response.
popa_bar_abbaParticipant??? ???- ???? ???? ?????? ?????? ?? ??? ???
Let’s see how many times we can get back to this.
popa_bar_abbaParticipant??? ??????!
popa_bar_abbaParticipant??? ??? ???? ????
popa_bar_abbaParticipantYou asked if anyone “knows about this”.
I assumed you were asking about its efficacy as well as for his address, which you can probably find in the phonebook.
But if you weren’t, I’m sorry. I’ll duck out of this thread. (unless it gets fun.)
I wish you the very best, in this endeavor and in all others.
popa_bar_abbaParticipant?????? What ??????
The ????? and the poskim call it a ????.
???? means a party where the main event is drinking.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantsmartcookie:
There certainly is a difference between lightheaded and drunk.
I am talking about getting drunk. So are the poskim.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantDY, you cant fight success! Over the years, Ive heard of certain people giving Brachos for certain things and their success rate is unbelievable.
Firstly, many people get engaged anyway, and you only hear the success stories.
Secondly, it is probably the ???.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantDo they clean it together with the coffee machines?
I have seen them rinsing the tongs in it.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantDo you know if the cleaning agents they used to clean that is kosher?
They don’t have cleaning agents. The regular agents (barista’s?) do the cleaning.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantDid I mention they are playing non jewish music in starbucks? But it is really hard to hear over the coffee grinder.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantNo, I’m drinking from the toilet.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantsorry yogibooboo.
Look, I agree that it sometimes gets out of hand. I have seen guys drink in extremely irresponsible ways.
However, the most egregious cases we hear about are usually kids whose parents never taught them to drink responsibly and have now broken free of their shackles for the first time.
For example, the story which is published every year in the advertisements. The kid in the story drank three 8oz glasses of whiskey in a few minutes “because he didn’t feel anything yet”. Nobody who had ever drunk any amount of alcohol before would do that.
So as far as I am concerned, the moral of that story is to teach your kids how to drink.
I really don’t associate with the opinion that all drinking is bad always. It is certainly not what chazal say about purim, or the rest of the year.
I have gotten quite drunk every year since I was 15, and I never ended up in the hospital, nor did anything outrageous.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantAnd I will also follow canine’s rov.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI’m sorry, but it is really quite ridiculous to claim that there is no halachic basis to get mind-numbingly drunk on purim- because there is. It is the pashtus of the gemara and the shulchan aruch.
Also, I have never seen anybody drink a little bit and then go to sleep, so anybody who does not get drunk is usually not yotzei according to anyone.
And the shulchan aruch wasn’t only written for yeshiva guys. You also have a chiyyuv.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantWhen I asked, the said, “are you out of your ?????”.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantLet me get this straight.
You think that the reason G-d is not letting you get married is because you haven’t found the right rabbi to give you the right bracha on purim.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantOk. I’m here again. Drinking starbucks in the CR.
??? ?????? ?????
popa_bar_abbaParticipantJust want to bump this up now, in expectation of being there bright and early tomorrow morning.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantMaybe there was a simcha and there were non frum relatives coming.
Maybe there was a fire and there were non frum firemen coming.
Maybe there was a good kiddush and I was coming. (doesn’t explain the cars.)
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI see. So you think that they are brainwashed.
I don’t see how we can discuss this if you are coming from that position, so let’s forget it.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantWhy does everything have to boil down to contracts and rights?
If a couple decides that this is how they want to live, why should anybody criticize them? I don’t criticize how you live.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantAnd if I post on purim night, you may rest assured that I will be drunk out of my brains.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantMaybe she’s bulimic.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantWe can discuss what age is appropriate to start drinking on purim, but I certainly don’t think it is relevant whether they are 21.
21 is just an age which is mandated that the states must not allow you to purchase alcohol or lose their federal highway funding. I’m not sure what federal highway funding has to do with purim.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantThey may be attention grabbing.
They may be. They may not be. If they are, then there could be an issue. If they’re not…
Also, she may think if she has leggings, her skirt doesn’t need to be long enough.
She may. But we are presumably talking about a situation where her skirt is long enough.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantbbubbee:
What is wrong with having leggings on under your skirt, as long as you skirt is long enough?
How is it different from wearing stockings? Are you not allowed to wear stockings?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI am highly unconvinced by the knee jerk reaction to assur all non jewish music.
I understand the objection to the lyrics of many songs, and I can see how there could be an objection to some beats.
But I don’t really see why it should all be considered all bad.
popa_bar_abbaParticipant???? ??????
popa_bar_abbaParticipantsorry frim.
I don’t find the idea of a quiet peaceful house for one day very scary.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantThe kesubah does not say that a wife does not need to work.
As far as hakaras hatov, I would hope that husbands who are being supported by their wives do feel and show hakaras hatov.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantTie the kids up and gag them.
Go as pirates and hostages.
(Don’t untie them until school starts again.)
popa_bar_abbaParticipantPopa: The scene you just described is Uch!
Mods! Since when do we let posters call the mitzvos “uch”?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantDo the Popa method.
You set your alarm for the absolute latest time you can get up without being too late for whatever you do first in the morning. Then, you need to get up when it goes off, so you do.
You need to be careful to not set it too early.
Don’t set it for 20 minutes before you need to be at shachris, because on a lazy day you’ll say “I only really need 10 minutes”. If you only need 10 minutes, set it for 10 minutes.
Also, keep in mind that you may not need to be exactly on time for wherever you are going. If you are going to school and you can be 10 minutes late, set it so you will always be that late, because this way you absolutely cannot be any later.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantMaking a menu for the purim seuda has very different considerations than for any other meal.
Firstly, whereas you usually only have to think about how it tastes going down, on purim you also have to know how it tastes going up.
Secondly, you want to worry about how it will stain your clothing, carpet, and furniture. After being mixed with wine, and all the other things being served.
Third, it should be something which is easy to eat with your hands, because nobody has the patience or dexterity for a fork.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantPresumably, you get a mitzva for every drink you drink on purim which helps you get drunk.
Therefore, it is commendable to drink during the year, and especially during the lead up to purim, in order to increase your tolerance so that you are able to do more mitzvos on purim.
