Also I hate ameratzim so much that i want to bite them.

This is because am haaratzim hate talmidei chachamim so much that they want to bite them like a donkey (according to R’ Akiva). And then, it is is ???? ???? ?? ????.

Ok, so it turns out that I was correct and incorrect.

I was correct that my explanation didn’t make any sense, and I was incorrect because I thought it was possible to make sense of it, but it isn’t.

I spoke to a chashuv economist tonight. He said it makes no sense–there is no way to explain through risk theories why it makes sense to buy a lottery. The only explanation is that you are paying to dream.

Look, honestly, the only reason why I posted here in the first place is because I wanted to know about this program. I haven’t the foggiest idea beyond this post and what I’ve heard over time. That has been my request from the first post.

    SO can someone tell me?

Project SEED (Summer Education ? ?) is a project run by Torah Umesorah. It consists of several types of programming, which share certain commonalities. You can see more by googling it and finding them on their websites.

    A. The commonality is that it is always in the summer; sending yeshiva guys or “yeshiva” girls to underserved jewish communities. (Their policy is to not run both a girls and guys program in the same city).

    B. Types of programming.

    1. Day camps. Some of the programs are day camps, which the guys or girls run for the local kids. Most (all?) girls ones are this type, and some guys ones are this type. I personally did this type once.

    2. Learning. Most of the guys programs are like this. It is usually run in affiliation with a shul, and the guys spend several hours a day learning in the shul and available to learn with the am haa- um- baal habatim. I have personally done 3 of these programs, and the hours we spent daily learning typically ranged in the 5 hours a day area.

Frequently, the guys will also say shiurim, and speak between mincha/maariv and the like.

Also frequently, there will be married couples who are part of this type of group, and the women half of the couples will say shiurim for women. I bet it has even happened that there were only couples, and singles.

There may be other things you do as well. There can be endless variation. BBQ’s are an essential part of this. So is beer.

It is really quite a win-win situation for the Jews and the yeshiva guys/girls.

I suppose the question I am asking, is whether we have “risk preference” towards the risk of winning a lottery.

I think we do. I’m just not sure how to quantify it. It doesn’t make much sense that dollars are worth more when you have a lot–we usually assume the opposite.

My comparison to insurance was that when you buy insurance, you know it is a negative value investment for you. That is, the EV of the payout is less than the investment. But, you buy it anyway because you are risk averse, so that in your world, the payout has a higher value than the investment. Because if your house burns down, you will value those dollars much more than you do now.

I am trying to say that the same theory explains why you are willing to make a negative investment in the lottery ticket, and I am pretty sure I am correct, but I can’t figure it out.

I’m more concerned with having what to eat until pesach.

The year that the Terri Shiavo incident was occurring, it was right around pesach. My family was walking around saying we were “starving like Terri”. (Because they pulled her feeding tube and starved her to death).

I was thinking there are 60 numbers, and each of the first 5 balls are one of the 60, and then the mega ball is it’s own pool of 60. Making what I said.

    Are those the wrong numbers?

The question is, is Ambit energy really any better or cheaper? What is the catch? (I don’t know enough about this program to give answers here, maybe popa can help us out)

The catch is that it isn’t cheaper, after the delivery fees which the electricity company gets to charge you even if you are using ambit.

The simplest proof to a scam, is that if it was really a profitable way to make money, it would be run like a regular business. The normal business model is the most efficient way to run a business, and makes for the largest profits. If it is running as an MLM, it is because it is one big ?? ?? ?????.

I will note here that Dans Deals has banned all talk of ambit energy from his site. Because he doesn’t want his site used to promote scams.

However, you should not accuse your acquaintances who do it of being thieves. Probably, they don’t understand, and are the victims of the thievery.

It is the same with all of them: Scamway, ambit, maddoff, and the rest.

This discussion is first class retarded.

If I understand correctly, this yeshiva has an elementary school, and a high school. Many students from the elementary school do not want to continue to their high school, and many from other elementary schools do want to go to their high school.

If they have 3 parrallel classes in elementary school, and 3 parallel classes in high school, and those classes are the same size, then it would still not mean that everyone from the elementary school will be accepted to the high school. Many won’t even apply! And there is competition with students from other elementary schools.

If they then cut the size of the high school, it just means that it will be more competitive to get in. But it was never a right of the students of the elementary school to be admitted to the high school! And many of them never even wanted to!

This thread is ridiculous. And likely hotzaos shem ra. Shame on you all for badly about people when you don’t know a thing.

I do not question the need to “chill”, but this can be accomplished in shorter spans of time. As for a full summer, the strong nucleus of learning and Avodas Hashem must remain intact.

    A full summer?

Just how long do you think a yeshiva summer is?

I agree with poppa. those who are successful and make money,

are only successful because of all the work put in by those who are not

I would put it even harsher. I would say they are only successful by ripping off the people who are signing up through them, most of whom will lose money on the deal.

Can anyone explain their opposition to Ambit Energy or Meleleuca’s direct sales programs? Specifically, not just against mlm’s in general.

No. They are an MLM, which means they are a scam.

I cannot explain my opposition separately from my opposition to MLM’s. That is like asking me to explain my opposition to speeding on the Grand Central separately from my opposition to speeding in general.

And pba, I DO think it’s gaava to assume that these balabatim are amaratzim just because they’re not in kollel. Just the fact that they’re going to these learning sessions 2 hours a day, as said in the OP, on top of their very busy schedules makes that absolutely demeaning to working people.

And you haven’t answered my question, by the way.

I don’t assume they are am haaratzim. I know they are. I have been on these programs, remember?

Besides, you accused me of gaava before that, just for having gone on Torah Umesorah’s SEED programs!

Cool it, pba. I’m asking a simple question here— what is the point of these trips?

I’m looking for a nice, friendly response to a person who means no disrespect and seeks only an answer, seeing as I don’t know much about this. I was looking for a clarification.

Oh. I’m sorry. I thought it was a bit accusatory. And considering I was being accused of gaava for spending my summers learning with people for free instead of just going on vacation; and being told to assume that I knew less than the am haaratzim who had never barely opened a gemara in 30 years if ever, while I was killing myself over it 60 hours a week for a decade; I sort of responded in kind.

Why do yeshiva bochurim assume that they can be mechazek the balebatim (who are undoubtedly much older than them) and can teach them how to learn? Seems a bit gaavadig unless I’m just not getting the concept.

    I’ll fix your post.

You meant to say: “Why does torah umesorah which runs SEED assume that yeshiva bochurim can be mechazek baal habatim, and teach them how to learn? Apparently, they know what is going in the world, and know that it is true.

    Actually:

    1. The statute reads: (3) A person who is not engaged in an unlawful activity and who is attacked in any other place where he or she has a right to be has no duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.

So, it applies to anyone, not just patrols.

    2. Nothing is obvious. It is completely possible that Martin saw him following him, so whirled and attacked him. It is completely possible that Martin was really out hunting hispanics. It is completely possible that zimmerman was out hunting blacks.

    3. zimmerman did call 911.

    4. You don’t need to call 911. It doesn’t matter what the author says, the law is not ambiguous.

NASi is wrong to criticize a yeshiva rule made by its roshei yeshiva, who are also more or less the leaders of the yeshivish world in america. (not the lowercase i in NASi, since they don’t deserve a capital I.)

NASi is also wrong in fact. If there was no freezer, guys would come back later, since they could wait until they were actually ready to date instead of until they thought they might want to date in a couple of months.

NASi is also making much ado about nothing, since the freezer is only a couple months (cheshvan until tu bishvat is 3.5 months. Pesach until shiva asar b’tamuz is 2.5 months.)

    Lunch: Fruits and vegetables.

    Snack: Fruits and vegetables.

Dinner: Whatever the blazes I want, though I try to eat healthily, and not just junk food like pasta or potatoes.

    After Dinner snack: Beer.

Shabbos: Whatever in blazes I want.

You are sure that if you find a bottle of whiskey in your garage that you can spill it down the drain, and that you are not stealing from the goy? (whiskey is chametz gamur, right?)

You are sure that your shtar writes out anything which is chametz gamur? What makes you sure of that? My shtar doesn’t. And my rabbi sells chometz both for people who are selling real chometz, and also for people who are not selling real chometz.
