It was a well known practise to learn Chovos Levovos Shaar Habitochin in Yeshivos before the War. In chasidisha circles this was done as a prelude to the Gemorah shiur. For some reason this custom lost traction and was forgotten. There are sforim today that may have been written in previous generations but speak to the restless neshomahs of todays young. Try Chovos Hatamidim for one, it really amazes me that it was written before the Churban, yet speaks clearly of current trials.

    Reb Shmendrik,

Firstly… the Bobover Rebbe Rav Shloma Ztl was Rav in Bobov for several years. It is true that once he accepted the hanhager as Rebbe, he no longer acted as a communal Rav. However to the chasidim he was always called The Rav….. anyway, i take your point, although i dont particularly agree. I know from experience that if he was doing this strictly because of a doctors orders he would have told me so.As i mentioned, he did explain that the roll was made with fruit juice and was hence a mazonas. On another level,Chasidim often watched their Rebbes intently, learning from their ways and trying to emulate them, here the Rav went out of his way to explain the circumstances.

As for his aversion to sandwiches, he spoke on many occasions to the bochurim that sandwiches were not a Yidisha way to eat. They were created by Lord Sandwich so that he could fress continuously and not even need a plate. This the Rav Ztl said was gluttony and a chosed should try to be more refined in his approach to eating. He wanted eating to be an avodah and not just a means to an end. On the same subject there were many times when he would teach the olam by the tish about proper manners in eating.

I have been enthralled in the give and take on this subject and would like to add my two cents:

Just to caste some light upon yechusdik’s Query regarding the Chief Rabbi’s attendance of a royal wedding…..it has long been the position of the office of the Chief Rabbi to attend functions when invited to do so by the Sovereign …such invites are worded “by Royal Command ….” this has been the case historically and all past Chief Rabbi’s have done so. It was considered a chiuv to do so if so “commanded “

This program seems to be the best… I have been told in no uncertain terms, that I must lose weight. Other plans may work in short term but after you leave, you just go back to your old habits ….regaining the weight you lost…. this program can be used for long term, and by writing down everything you eat, you see with your own eyes where you are messing up… I hardly ever use all the points allotted, and therefor feel able to indulge a bit on Shabbos. Sure Shabbos is hard, but you can get used to it, and working out pro points isn’t all that hard if you use online tools. Dont wait for drastic loss, it is slow and steady that wins this race…. Btw, there is a kosher group on the site although I haven’t seen any activity…. lets hear it from others, lets share in some success stories…..a little hiemisha chizuk never goes amiss…..

just a short quote from HaRav Shloma Freifeld Ztl:

“If the only way we can sell our children on Torah is by forbidding everything else, then we are bankrupt”

its vital that the exact situation is totally understood…. as mentioned in an earlier posting… at Torahanytime.com there is a shiur given by HaRav Oelbaum that is quite clear…. messira to authorities can sometimes be a mitzvah when children or spouses are being victimised… enough said, again, every situation is unique and must be discussed with a Rav who understands the particular area in which events are unfurling. As in all halacha, questions must always be asked in seeking direction, however some Rabbonum have experiance in specific fields and are more proficient given the nuances involved.
