BTguy: I didn’t go with computer dating sites. I tried a “frum” dating service a couple of times, but with no luck. Actually, the way I met my wife was that she and her daughter came into shul where she baked the cakes for Shabbos Kiddush. I’d come in to talk to the Rov about my dating problems. . . .
PBTMemberMy wife was divorced, and she’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I’d be nothing without her. And she has a daughter from her first marriage, now age 21, who’s a very dear and accomplished person with lots of potential. And, to make sure she would turn out that way, we made a point of remaining on friendly, civil terms, with my wife’s former husband.
Unlike the posts above, it sounds to me like you are feeling frustrated, and even hurt. I’d just like to tell you, don’t give up. Be yourself, daven a lot, and ask Hashem to help you find the one who’s really right for you.
PBTMemberThis year that happens to coincide with 6 Adar. That evening, the 7th of Adar, the Denver kehillah holds a dinner l’ilui nishmas Moshe Rabbeinu. We hear divrei Torah and pledge masechtos to learn in time for the next year. I love it and have almost never missed it. The only year I did was because it was my first date with the woman who’s now my wife.
PBTMemberChildren need a certain amount of “bribery” to get them to do mitzvos and enjoy them. If that’s part of this child’s chinuch and it achieves its goal I’d have no problem with it.
PBTMemberI don’t know that I’m “mehadrin min hamehadrin,” but I do consider myself to be Yireh Shomayim, and I learn because I want to know how to do Hashem’s Torah as well as possible. Even though I might not be “mehadrin min hamehadrin,” I would like to be. I do use oil — actually the pre-filled oil cup candles that are now available, and I light increasing numbers of them each night. I don’t want to second-guess a Rov, especially one I don’t know, or say that he’s wrong. Maybe he saw something about you that generated the pasak. However, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with someone who wants to be “mehadrin min hamehadrin” from doing something at that level to get some “on-the-job” experience.
PBTMemberHave the toenail removed by a podiatrist.
PBTMemberI make a point of learning and encouraging my kids to do the same, while the candles are glowing. Learning Torah is one of the key things the Greeks wanted to abolish, so to learn when the candles are aflame seems to be some delicious revenge in making a point of doing what the enemies of Torah wanted to destroy.

“Anchovies not appetizing.” You’re right. My father used to order pizza with everything on it that included anchovies. The taste and gritty texture feel like you’re eating very salty sandpaper. So although the ongoing discussion is on fish and meat, in the case of anchovies I no longer eat them alone or with anything else.
PBTMemberPractical issue: How does anybody wearing nose rings deal with a common cold, or just blowing their nose. Don’t nose rings make it hurt just a bit more, and harder to clear out the congestion?
PBTMemberI’m a righty and spin clockwise. Except for Artscroll’s on-line dreidel spin contests. I can never figure out which direction it’s spinning in that game.
PBTMemberI think this is a question in halacha that a person needs to ask his or her Rov. I don’t think a public forum is the proper place for deciding halachic questions.
PBTMemberMazel tov! Where’s the chasenah being held?
PBTMemberCharlie Brown, that’s well taken, but owning a device that is basically an open invitation to spy on me isn’t the same as living my life without such devices, and then if somebody does snoop it’s at least not because I gave them the chance.
December 1, 2011 9:03 pm at 9:03 pm in reply to: Do you still get childish impulses to do silly things? #1060058PBTMemberYes. I still pretend to make friends with spiders, beetles, etc. that happen to come into the house just before I evict them.
PBTMemberActually, the new gadgets I don’t understand make me feel like I’ve landed on another planet — without having known I was on a spaceflight. Although after seeing the Fox News report this morning about spyware programs in most SmartPhones, I’m sort of glad I’m satisfied to stick to the “old” stuff.
PBTMemberI’m not AFRAID of dying, but I’d like to avoid it as long as possible.
PBTMemberI stand corrected. It is Barrett’s ESOPHAGUS, not esophagitis.
PBTMemberI am not a gastrenterologist, but I’ve had a lifelong problem with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In addition, I work as a Claims Examiner for the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs, and I often have to evaluate Barrett’s Esophagitis and related diseases.
Untreated, GERD can lead to esophagitis, and that in turn leads to the Barrett’s Esophagitis. I am not totally sure what that is, although what I understand is that it involves thickening and calcification of scar tissue in the esophagus, which has never had a chance to heal totally because of being bombarded with stomach acid. If Barrett’s Esophagitis is left untreated one can be at risk for esophageal cancer. I have personally been permitted by my doctors to continue on Prilosec for life. It is considered safe, which is why it’s OTC. But I do agree with the above advice about getting 2nd opinions, especially since it sounds like you’re not totally comfortable with the advice you have so far. I’m not a NY resident, so don’t know anyone there. I hope this helps.
