    But if he can grant that there is an intrinsic reason to have techeiles on the beged then he can also grant that there is an intrinsic resaon to have Techeiles on the strings and thus he should not have a kashya.

    Yes Techeiles can be a general term for Tzitzis. But not in this case. See for example the Eitz Yosef who explains that Korach was maskim that his tallis would still require the lavan strings. His only argument was that it shouldn’t require Techeiles strings. Now if his claim was “why do I need Techeiles strings if I have a Techeiles beged?” then he could have also said “why do I need wool strings if I have a wool beged?” Unless you say that he was granting that there is some reason why you need strings but that the blue shouldn’t have to be specifically on the strings, in which case we’re back to my original question – he could have taken any techeiles and had such an argument.

    He could have made such a kal vachomer without Techeiles – if wool (strings) fix a garment then surely wool itself would not need to be fixed. So any beged of wool should be patur from tzitzis.

    Then he had no kashya. The Torah says that you have to put Techeiles strings on. What does it make a difference if the beged is Techeiles or not? Unless you assume that there is a known reason for Techeiles strings, and a Techeiles beged can accomplish the sane thing. Which leads me to my question. So I’m still not understanding your answer.

    I’m not sure how you are answering my question. Obviously Korach could have picked any mitzva and found something that had no logical reason. But I am operating under the assumption that Korach was granting that there could be mitzvos whose reasons we don’t know. But his kashya from Techeiles was that we know the purpose of Techeiles and a Tallis Shekula Techeiles would accomplish that purpose just as well (if not better) than the strings of Techeiles. My question then is why he had to come on to a Tallis Shekula Techeiles when there are so many simpler ways that he could have made the same point about Techeiles.

    1.The Oker Harim of the Gemara is someone who has broad bekius, but his specialty is oker harim as opposed to knowing by heart every single statement ever made.

    2.I already mentioned earlier in this thread that this is a machlokes between the Pri Megadim and R’Shlomo Kluger (although they were not quite discussing electronic resources)

    3.I agree that they are probably trying to make it geshmak. But I wouldn’t quite call it an eis laasos. With the proper guidance and motivation, it can be done.

    4&5.It’s not a question of extremes. What the Maharal, Orchos Tzadikim, R’ Shach etc. were lamenting (read their actual words, they are literally crying that Torah will be forgotten this way) was the primary focus on iyun before attaining knowledge of shas (and also that sometimes the methods of iyun are pilpulim shel sheker). Everyone agrees that at some point you have to delve deeply into Torah and know how to be medameh milsa l’milsa and be mechadesh answers – but it has to be at the right time and using proper methods of Torah study.

    And if someone sleeps there a mezuza is required despite the sifrei torah. The whole reason why in general a shul would not need a mezuza is not that it’s a ??? ??? ?????, but because it’s not a ???? ayen Yoma 11a-11b where the Gemara discusses this and says:

    The response that I have heard people give to your question is that yes theoretically the Gedolim could be wrong/make a mistake, but in practice WE are not allowed to decide that they are wrong. I’m not saying I agree, but this is something I’ve heard.

    The original statement about Mashiach was “he denies that there will be a moshiach, being that that is one of the yud gimmel ikrim that qualifies as apikorsus.” To which I responded with the statement of R’ Hillel. At that point, my main purpose was just to discuss the general ideas (and the statement of R’ Hillel was a good way to get started); indeed at that point in the thread there was no information given as to what exactly were the parameters of this individual’s denial.

    Right, but why was it “????? ??? ?? ??”? The Gemara doesn’t say anywhere that it was because he violated a fundamental belief of the religion. The pashut pshat is that it was wrong because it was against a nevuah. Now you might respond that it can’t be that an amora doesn’t know a nevua. But the Maharal clearly says that it was a “????? ?????? ?????”.

    After a nice discussion about how pilpul/charifus without having bekius is pretty much worthless (but it is too long for me to quote word for word now, maybe some other time) the Levush Mordechai in his hakdama to Bava Kamma writes:

    It seems that the only thing Eliyahu taught him was that the concern of Mazaikin overrides the issue of Bitul Tefilla, although technically you can perhaps read it as saying that Eliyahu was mechadesh the issue of Mazikin but I don’t think that’s what it’s saying.

    The whole debate of “Daas Torah” is whether the hamon am is obliged to follow the Rabbis’ pronouncements on political, sociocultural, economic, and medical issues. A source can be binding (unless there is a way to reinterpret the source or counter it with another source). Presumably intuition should not be binding.

    I don’t know why you think that R’ Soloveitchik was issuing a statement of daas torah that there is no such thing as daas torah. He was simply stating a fact. If he would tell me that this week is parshas shelach would that be a statement of daas torah?

    I don’t think anybody disagrees. I think everyone will acknowledge that someone who is smart and very knowledgeable in Torah can give good advice and inform you about what the Torah sources say on a given topic. The issue is when this said person issues a statement, without providing a Torah source (or where other people bring in conflicting Torah sources) and people say that these statements are binding on klal yisrael as determined by the percieved stature of the issuer of the statement.
