    The main point (which I’m not sure if I managed to convey in my long post) is that the mussar that R’ Chaim was against is significantly different than mussar as it is practiced today. Regarding today’s mussar, you might be right when you say “But what about mussar could be bad for someone?” (Again factoring out bittul torah.)

    Well I don’t think R’ Chaim Brisker spoke such an eloquent English or even English at all. I was quoting his grandson, R’ Yosef Dov Haleivi Soloveitchik, who was saying over what R’ Chaim had said, using his own eloquent English.

    As to your second question:

    The starting point is to learn Torah – “drag him to the study house”. R’ Yitzchak Blazzer, one of the prime disciples of R’ Yisrael Salanter, visited Volzhin (where R’ Chaim Brisker was Rosh Yeshiva) and tried to convince them to learn mussar via the following argument: The Gemara in Berachos (5a) says ????? ????? ??? ??? ??? ?? ??? ??? ???’ ???? ??? ????? ?? ???? ???? ??? ??? ????? ????? ????? ???? ?????? ?? ???? ???? ??? ??? ???? ????? ??? ????? ?? ?????? ?? ???? ???? ??? ??? ????? ?? ??? ????? ????? ????? ??? We see clearly that harping on the day of death (which is a major part of Salanterian Mussar [as opposed to Slabodka Mussar]) is more effective then learning Torah. R’ Chaim’s response was that granted it is more effective, but is a last resort. One can easily imagine how focusing too much on death can end badly. So R’ Chaim said that if you’re sick you have to utilize every possible cure, but if you’re healthy, then it’s not worth it. (This is all besides for the argument that it’s bittul Torah.)

    Well speaking of my phone and emoticons, I was texting someone and I wanted to use an aposiopesis so I pressed the 1 key three times but it gave me 🙂 instead, which indicates to me that 🙂 is more commonly used than ellipses. Oh well.

The only way I could imagine this happening is if you killed your future self without realizing it, and then when the future comes around you decide to go back in time for some reason and then you get killed by your past self. But why bother going back in time, if you’ll never be able to change anything. Even if you say that “time” is like G-d in that it knows your future actions and incorporates them in to the present, there is still no way to change what happened, because if your future self didn’t go back in time, then when you get to the future you will ostensibly not be able to go back in time, and if your future self did go back in time then the present already happened in accordance with the future so at best you would be forced to go back in time in order to uphold the present which only happened as it did BECAUSE of what you did in the future which also would mean that you never have the choice whether or not to go back in time, which then begs the question – what made it that in the present your future self was back in time? It wasn’t your future choice, because your future self didn’t have a choice.

    Some of them I stam came across in my journey through the corpus of Talmudic/Rabbinic literature. A few of them were pointed out to me by people. Many of them I found while specifically researching this inyan.

    For example, I found the following source accidentally. I was reading someone’s Doctoral Dissertation and he quoted this sefer and the part he was quoting just happened to be on the same page as this:

    Looking back at the gemara, it seems to me like the lashon of ???? ???? ?? ???? ?? ???? ?? indicates that the entire question wasn’t answered; not that Rasha v’tov lo is an exception.

    The version on hebrewbooks is arranged differently than the version which I quoted from, hence the discrepancy in chapter numbers (and that explains why I couldn’t find it on hebrewbooks).

    So the question is can someone presume a theory to be false because to him it is obviously false? Well I think it depends on the person’s status and the subject matter of the theory. I am alleging that Randomex is not of the caliber to presume my (perfectly reasonable) theory to be false.

    It doesn’t make sense to be worried about unforeseen circumstances because any unforeseen circumstances would have happened already. Unless you say that something already happened but no one knew about it yet and it only happened because you will go back in time, in which case by not going back in time it will not have happened. But that just brings back my other question which I don’t think yekke2’s answer actually resolves.
