AinOd, thanks. I don’t think it is salt alone, because I add that always. Maybe some of the other spices that were mentioned. I may try your olive oil ingredient.

I have a feeling that caterers are not going to reveal the entire secret of kiddush chulent so quickly.

At a kiddush, I usually eat so much, I have no appetite for the meal. I feel guilty sometimes not being properly yotzei the lunch meal, but it would be achila gasa if I forced myself to eat, and not healthy either.

I rationalize that the meals are there for Oneg Shabbos, and not to torture a person. If he wants to eat, gezunteheit, if not, then there is no need to force himself.

Mod-80, I thought the same thing that the 2000 is in addition. (We think alike except when I get edited or deleted.)

Feif Un are you sure about that? When did it turn into a gambling game instead of a money for knowledge type of game? I can’t believe they take away your hard earned money at the end of the game if you are not in 1st place.

Feif Un, while I am not a maven and had’t watched since I was a young child, if she was not confident about the category, why would she want to risk money by wagering so high? You want her to bid 4999 and risk losing all that? I did not see the outcome, so I don’t know what happened. Did she get it right or wrong? What was the final question on the second day?

Our cholent is pretty standard, meat, potatoes, chulent bean and barley mix, and water, crockpot on low heat, but I never really like it. It never has a geshmakeh taam or consistency like the type I get at a kiddush. Can anybody diagnose? Maybe putting in kishke would help. It must be something in the additional flavorings we don’t use. They make a cholent spice combo which I have tried, but doesn’t make it taste like the pros. Can any body help?

Also, I have noticed that some caterers are now trying to save a few bucks by cutting down the meat, so you barely see any if at all in some kiddushes.

I agree with eating when you are hungry. Eat breakfast as late in the day as you can, maybe on your desk at work. Then skip lunch (you won’t be hungry anyway). Eat supper as late as possible when you are really hungry, and then you go to bed satiated.

For breakfast high protein is best. Maybe fish sandwiches. Note tuna may have too much mercury for daily use, but look into gefilte fish, or fish stick sandwiches. In general, protein keeps you the fullest the longest. Try to avoid sweets, except for maybe a very light dessert. Eat fruits and veggies. Bananas are very filling. Avoid snacks. Try to let your apostat guide you. Never eat when you are not hungry, no matter how delicious the food looks.

Charlie, you raise difficult questions, but I am not sure that they are all absolutes. As far as the Holocaust, because it happened so recently, and their are so many documents and photos and witnesses including Dwight Eisenhower who said that he is there to bear witness lest anybody falsify what he saw with his own eyes. Anybody who denies, obviously has an agenda of neo-Nazism or something similar.

But on things which are not as clear or as political, I think you can say what you like, but must bring good evidence, and explain the evidence to the contrary, as well. You may be looked upon as a wacko, in certain cases, but your use of the term “not allowed” I think is not the correct formulation.

Try to keep to 2 meals a day. A nice big breakfast, and a nice big supper very late, so you will fall asleep on a nice full stomach, and not snack before bedtime.

Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. No soda, reg or diet. Just dilute orange juice for supper; low-fat milk for breakfast.

The truth is that I really owe some Chareidim an apology. When I began posting on YW, I thought I was a Chareidi. But then I was turned off by a lot of kannaishe posts about various topics from different people here, and I began to think that all Chareidim were taught those hashkafos which I found objectionable. I now believe it was really only one or two individuals who were posting that kannaishe stuff under many usernames, and that most Chareidim do not subscribe to all those beliefs.

Mdd, Rabbi Broyde’s essay is about thirty something pages, so you can see all his sources and reasoning inside. I am not saying you or I have to agree, but nevertheless, the way of milchamsa shel Torah is only thorugh rayos and sevaros, not labels and namecalling. Rabbi Broyde did no worse than any other shtickel Torah on any random topic. Feel free to shlug him up with your own rayos and sevaros.

As far as someone’s questions about Rav Moshe who is the posek of the USA, not Rav Elyashiv, as great as he is, Rav Moshe writes the following in a Tshuva:

He tells a Rov that he has no right to forbid his wife from wearing a sheitel, even if it looks exactly like human hair and one can’t tell the difference. He says if one would forbid it because of maris ayin, he would have to forbid men from shaving, as well, since one might think he shaved with a blade. So there is no maris ayin in these types of cases.

Simcha, I have been saying that here on YW for years. Not only that, but the Maharsha clearly brings the gemara in Chidushei Agados (small font), not Chidushei Halachos (large font).

As far as Hashkafa goes, I totally agree. One must be nice and menschlach to one’s host country and not rebel against them, unless it is pikuach nefesh like Nazi Germany or the like.

My main question is why that menschlachkeit does not extend to our own brethren who now rule over EY. Why are we allowed to insult, degrade, deligitimize the current govt and the Medinah? Where did all the hashkafa go? Are they any more illegitimate than say the govt of Henry the 8th in England whose hobby was chopping off his wives’ heads?

Furthermore, the founders of the Medina got permisission in advance from the relevant authorities of their host countries, and from the British (the White Paper) to set up a state. So there was no rebellion involved.

If Rav Elyashiv called the USA a medina shel chessed, can anyone tell me how EY treats its citizens any worse? They have allowed Torah institutions and shuls to flourish in addition to creating an advanced and free society where everybody can be as frum as they want. Where did all the hashkafa go?

All the kindness the govt shows and services they provide are ignored, and no hakaras hatov is shown. Some claim a single maysa of Yaldei Teheran or Yaldei Teiman is the reason for the negativity. What about all the good which is 1 million times more? In addition, there were negative incidents in the USA, too, including the lynching of a Jew, Leo Frank, in the South years back. That didn’t stop Reb Elyashiv or Reb Moshe from constantly praising the USA. Why is Israel any different, especially when it is our own brethren in charge?

So Sam2, how does that fit in with the handshaking thread of a few months back? Wouldn’t it be lshem shomayim to shake the hand of an interviewer or a non-frum person at a chasuna if they extend it, instead of making them uncomfortable?

Sam2, look at the Rama, I believe in E”H 22, who says the minhag is to be meikil on many things. From what I read, which seems almost impossible for me to believe that I am understanding it right, men were allowed to have a female servant bathe them. I assume this involved some physical contact, but do not know what the Rama means. If somebody can shed light on this, and explain, please do so.

One of the nosei keilim there says that these restrictions all depend on the type of person one knows himself to be. That is why some amoraim picked up the kallah to dance with her.

The Goq, that is not what I meant. First of all, I wish you a refuah sheleima and may your life get back to normal with good health, parnasa and hatzlacha. Second of all, I am very close with someone who has such a disability, so I know first hand, and would never minimize it.

My point is that sometimes stress pushes people over the edge, and can cause a breakdown is susceptible individuals. Unfortunately, some broke down during the holocaust, etc. Sometimes today people may feel they are going to have a break down because of an impending foreclosure or other tragedy.

I am not at all implying that it is not organic, as it definitely is. However, I think that great stress or tragedy or fear can exacerbate it, and be the final factor that causes somebody to get sick.

I think the message for the klal is to let people know that no matter what situation, we will be a safety net for you. One must always maintain contact and do whatever he can to help someone in trouble, as that can prevent him from going over the edge. The worst thing is if somebody feels his problem has no solution, and nobody will be there to help him out. Chessed can literally be a lifesaver.

Imagine if instead of going on fancy vacations, those who are able to would donate enough money for an emergency fund to help those with severe parnasa problems who fear the lights may be turned off at any moment or they may be evicted. At least we can help in such situations.

Unfortunately, I know of people with certain diseases who are in fear that their eyes may get worse to the point where they will not be able to see. Nobody has any clue how frightening this is to somebody. I wish we could help people with all types of sicknesses. But this requires years of research. I often wonder why research is not the number one focus of any baal chesed. Why are more frum people not going into science?

Anyway I am getting off topic, but being able to be nosei b’ol with suffering people is the least we can do.

Women must know that they have an innate attractiveness to their husbands, and as long as they try to look nice and talk gently and supportively to him, he will love her 100 times back. However, if she ever gets into shlump mode or nag mode or whine mode, that will forever alter her husband’s view of her, and make all the magic go away. It is important for women not to mess up the gift Hashem gives to all women which is their feminine magic. Once they do, it is almost impossible to get it back. This is probably why Chazal stressed so much shelo tisganeh al baalah. They permitted many things so a woman should always be attractive to her husband.

The problem is that many women do not realize they have this gift to begin with, or take it for granted, and once they mess up it is too late.

I am not saying husbands don’t have plenty to work on themselves, but a woman must know that her primary role is serving and pleasing her husband. A man’s primary role is his learning and advancing his career and chinuch and providing for his family. If he is treated properly, he will return the favor many times over with boundless love and admiration for his wife (unless there is something seriously wrong with him).

Women also need to realize that their schoolgirl cattiness of this girl I like and this one is not good enough for me (or thing or brand or whatever) is a big turn-off for men, and men find it immature. Women must adjust to a man’s way of thinking. A good man is kind to all, regardless. He does not want to be involved with a woman’s emotional ups and downs. He wants steady seiver panim yafos, chesed and smile.

YehudaYona, thanks for finally answering the question. However, I thought they filter out shmutz, at least the pictures. I suppose you mean they are texting each other (and opposite genders) and the parent doesn’t know who or what. For this reason, I do not allow my kids to have cell phones until they graduate HS and go to Israel where they are required by the sems for safety reasons.

However, the comments here make it seem like there is some inherent issur in the site itself. That is what I cannot figure out, as most people here are adults, and if they have cell phones, how could Facebook be any worse? A far as sites go, there are probably tons of sites which are hundreds of times worse.

PopaBarAbba, the MO probably changed to identify with Medinat Yisrael. In addition, in many MO schools, there are Israeli teachers who pronounce Hebrew that way. Furthermore, in many MO schools, they teach Ivrit B’Ivrit, (Hebrew subjects are studied in Hebrew). That means Gemara, Chumash and so on are taught in Hebrew by the teacher, and the students must also ask all questions and give all responses in Hebrew. Since modern spoken Hebrew is pronounced in Sephardit, the students learn that pronunciation. They do not know of any other, and may daven that way, as well.

I had some teachers when I was very young who would say Ani lo meivein Anglit. They would force the students to speak Hebrew all morning. Now while I think that gemara and chumash should be taught in English, since that is how to best develop one’s thinking and lomdus, I do believe that at least one period a day should be devoted to Ivrit B’Ivrit. Yeshiva Bochurim who cannot read, write, or speak Hebrew are at a disadvantage in trying to learn just about any Gemara or even Chumash and Rashi.

Yitayningwut, yes, I agree that Rambam is astounding, but it is hard to refute, since he is quite clear that there is a difference in halacha between a Tzeduki and an Apikorus. It is even more surprising that such a shechita could be kosher since the 5 halachos of shechita come from Torah Sheb’al Peh to begin with (Shehiyah, Drasah, Chalada, Hagramah v’Ikur).

As far as your point that the shechita of a nochri is pasul only because of a gezeira that he may have a machshava for avoda zara, that is correct and surprising, as well. Normally a nochri cannot do any mitzva for us. He can’t read megilla, etc. Not because of a fear of avoda zara, but simply because he is not a ben bris, or not btoras. Why does the Rambam say that he is only pasul for shechita because of a gezeira, and not midoraisa, like just about every other mitzva. I wanted to suggest that shechita may not be a chalos, but simply a metzius. If the animal is shechted the proper way, then that is all we care about. Nevertheless, that is also difficult, since we need koach adam, and a waterwheel with a knife is not normally OK (unless the person started the wheel with his koach and it shechted on the first revolution).

Now this reminds me of the following story.

A man made a bet with his friend that his dog can talk and is very smart. He asked it some questions in front of the friend:

    1) What is the top part of the house called?

    The dog answered: WOOF.

    2) What does it feel like if sandpaper rubs your nose?

    The dog answered: RUFF.

    3) Who was the greatest baseball player of all time?

    The dog answered ROOF:

The friend said “Come on, that’s ridiculous. Your dog doesn’t know anything.”

As the friend was leaving the dog turned to his owner and asked, “Why did he get so upset? Should I have said Gehrig?”

Yitayningwhat, I ws alerted to the significance of this Rambam by the Chazon Ish’s writings in Hilchos Shechita. This was discussed at length in an earlier thread a few months ago on Apikursis. There I brought from the Chazon Ish in a few places, that to be an apikorus means one must live a frei lifestyle and actively rebel. Merely thinking incorrect hashkafos is not enough. Thus, the often quoted saying that a nebech an apikorus is oich an apikorus is not correct according to kimat all the shitos of the Rishonim. Please find the earlier thread.

What is even more notable is that the Rambam says that even one who denies the entire Torah Sheb’al Peah is not an apikorus. The shechita of an apikorus is pasul, but the shechita of the Tzedukim and Baytusim who did not believe in Torah Sheb’al Peh is kosher, bdieved, if one supervised it. See Rambam Hilchos Shechita chapter 4.

In general, a difficulty with the science found in Chazal is that it doesn’t have a mechanism associated with it. For example, there is a gemara in AZ which says that for an ear condition, one should take a kidney, make some kind of an extract and put it into the ear. However, the gemara gives no info on what molecule in the kidney is reacting with which molecule in the ear to effect the cure.

It is extremely hard to reconcile our current way of thinking with the cures of Chazal, simply because we have no info on how they are supposed to work. I am not saying they do or don’t work, but the info is so sketchy that there is little to go on.

BTW, Joseph, why do you need so many usernames? Mods, why do you allow it?
