Seallsides, I don’t know if you’re joking, but that may not be a bad idea.
Pashuteh YidMemberMen should look for an attractive girl, but B”H, probably 90% of girls are.
BTW, it is generally said that for guys, their resumes are their looks. Women are looking for confidence and success more than looks. They may not realize this, but even an odd-looking guy who dresses up spiffy and has his own company suddenly can look very attractive.
March 6, 2011 2:37 am at 2:37 am in reply to: Tips for passing a Road Test in NYC other than Davening and knowing how to drive #747028Pashuteh YidMemberMore tips for road test.
1) No rolling stops. Stop all the way.
2) Signal all lane changes and turns.
3) Do not drive too slow. (Probably 20-25 is good for test, unless on busy street.)
4) Stop before stop sign and inch up until you can see traffic. Do not stop too early, and inch up for half a block.
March 6, 2011 2:35 am at 2:35 am in reply to: Tips for passing a Road Test in NYC other than Davening and knowing how to drive #747027Pashuteh YidMemberStory I heard from a friend: His father had been driving for his family lumber business since he was 13 or 14 without a license. When it came time for him to get a license, the form asked how many practice hours he had. He put down 100,000. On the test, he was so relaxed, he drove with one hand on the wheel, as many experienced drivers do. The inspector didn’t like it, and failed him.
The second time he shows up in a pickup truck filled with logs in the back. The inspector asked him what this is all about. He said, after my test I need to deliver these to the lumberyard.
Pashuteh YidMemberThis is how the joke goes:
In shul Shabbos morning:
Nisht shabbos geredt but I have a 2005 Ford Taurus for sale, do you know anybody looking for a nice car?
Nisht shabbos geredt, how much are you asking?
Nisht Shabbos geredt, about 10,000.
At Shabbos mincha:
Nisht Shabbos geredt, I’ll give you 6,000.
Nisht Shabbos geredt, sorry, I sold it already.
Pashuteh YidMemberThere is a mod in every shul. There is a mod on every block.
Beware.
Pashuteh YidMemberWhat on earth is wrong with eating late at night? It is hard to fall asleep hungry.
For that reason, on another thread, I recommended eating supper as late as possible so you don’t eat another snack afterwards.
Pashuteh YidMember1dayatatime, Yeshivas Ruach Hakodesh teaches one to know all the answers without even learning at all.
Pashuteh YidMemberNeek, it was also funny about 40 years ago in the movie “Fiddler on the Roof”.
Pashuteh YidMemberHere is the thread:
Pashuteh YidMemberSean, are you talking Vitamin B1?
Pashuteh YidMemberBTW, did you know that ZeesKite played a major role in the discovery of electricity by Ben Franklin? If he can do it, anybody can.
Seriously, you should probably first think of what exactly is upsetting you. Try to identify an exact cause. Some people really have major reasons to be depressed Chas vShalom. I.e., poor health, handicap, constant physical pain or loss of a limb, no job, rejection from a school, broken shidduch, divorce, loss of a loved one, etc.
But if one doesn’t have any of these, then probably one is not counting his blessings properly. Many would give millions to be physically healthy and able to function.
Try setting huge goals. Study as hard as you can and try to get into the top program in the field you like the best. Make yourself into all you can be. Do a lot of chessed. Build projects. Become an expert in a particular craft. The more you can say you have done, the better you’ll feel.
Pashuteh YidMemberThis was discussed at length in a different thread a while back. Somebody posted a very learned discussion of dikduk and concluded that the oi sound is not correct, or there would be things like dagesh’s and other vowels in places where they are not.
Pashuteh YidMemberFirst, the words livsumi means to exude a nice fragrance, meaning to be a bit happier. Where do you see the words completely smashed in the gemara? Second, the gemara right afterward says that one amora got drunk and stabbed another amora. The next year they discontinued the practice, since it could be pikuach nefesh.
So any possibility of pikuach nefesh means we shouldn’t drink. Bezman hazeh, we are told by big Rabbonim that many get into trouble, so obviously there is no chiyuv. If one can be yotzei according to the Rama with a bit of extra wine and a nap, who is it who takes it upon himself to be frummer than the Rama.
Especially when it leads to all kinds of chilulei hashem and nezek. It is purely the yetzer hara that imagines it is a mitzvah to drink to that extent. Believe me, if anybody is afraid of getting punished by the RBSH for not drinking, I will personally vouch for them upstairs.
It is amazing what the yetzer hara will do and how it will twist an aveira into a mitzvah.
Pashuteh YidMemberScullcap is not a tea, it is a yarmulka.
Pashuteh YidMemberHere is a very useful diet tip.
Always keep a box of Entenmann’s donuts on your desk. This way, whenever you are tempted to eat junk food, you’ll take a donut instead.
Pashuteh YidMemberWolf is right. A kasha is an attack question. A shaila is a request for information.
Pashuteh YidMemberAs Groucho Marx said, you need a sanity clause.
Pashuteh YidMemberCocacola, really sorry to hear that someone upset you. We try our best to get people to apologize if they hurt someone. Most do. Do not know what thread this happened on.
Look, they once started a thread about me to try to get me banned from YW. Most here are nice, and don’t want to hurt anybody.
Pashuteh YidMemberBTW, Tetracycline can badly discolor teeth, so be careful.
Pashuteh YidMemberCharlie, I am puzzled. I know your expertise is in Biostatistics, but what are your qualifications vis a vis this thread? What made you think you may have any info to add to this topic such that you offer an opinion on this issue in particular?
Pashuteh YidMemberWho said sun is bad? I have heard the exact opposite.
There are a number of oral medications a dermatologist can prescribe, but one, Accutane, is so dangerous, one dermatologist told me I wouldn’t give it to my worst enemy.
Prescription Benzoyl Peroxide 5 and 10 % topical gel seems to work well for me. There are other topical antibiotics as well. One book written by an MD also recommends zinc supplements (like Freeda Zinc Gluconate 30 mg) which seems to make skin heal much faster. On Pesach when I can’t take it, any acne sore stays around much longer. However, there are some risks that zinc can replace copper in your system, so talk anything over with a doctor.
Pashuteh YidMemberCanine, I beg to differ. Many provide kosher food, a shul, a beis medrash, and shiurim by chashuveh Rabbonim. In one highly regarded campus, the Lakewood Kollel Yungeleit regularly give shiurim to both beginners and people who have learned a number of years in yeshiva.
Why do you knock them?
February 18, 2011 4:25 pm at 4:25 pm in reply to: Helping husbands to be (extra) supportive to wife during pregnancy #742148Pashuteh YidMemberWhat’s with these two almost identical comments from APY and TBT?
February 18, 2011 3:45 pm at 3:45 pm in reply to: King's (Yossi's) Grill in Cedarhurst closed? #741861Pashuteh YidMemberIt has been around so long, though. It is not like a new business which didn’t take off. It was an established fixture in the area for many years. It always seemed to draw people, even at late hours.
Anybody know how long it was there?
Pashuteh YidMemberZeeskite, there are people suffering terrible yissurin that are so difficult one cannot process what they are going through. Nobody really has the answers as to why some have it easy, and some have a constant struggle.
Pashuteh YidMemberMods, what lawsuit? You would only reveal the contact info with written consent of both parties.
February 17, 2011 11:00 pm at 11:00 pm in reply to: King's (Yossi's) Grill in Cedarhurst closed? #741857Pashuteh YidMemberSay it ain’t so.
February 17, 2011 12:05 am at 12:05 am in reply to: King's (Yossi's) Grill in Cedarhurst closed? #741855Pashuteh YidMemberWas in the area last nite, and I saw that it was dark and totally dismantled.
Pashuteh YidMemberI take it the OP is female.
Nevertheless, not true that a combover always looks bad on men. PM Binyamin Netanyahu has one and he always looks great. I once saw a picture of him on a boat, and it had blown to the side. For it to look right one needs an expert barber, but it can be done.
Pashuteh YidMemberIt seems a davar pashut that menschlachkeit demands one say GS to anybody one meets, lest one think religious Jews are unfriendly.
The same would apply in an office. One can’t only talk abot work related matters. One must be friendly and ask where are you from, and say Oh, that is a great city, I visited it one time and I saw XYZ, etc. One must be warm and outgoing to all. There is a big difference between friendly conversation and improper conversation. One can do the former without the latter.
Pashuteh YidMemberThere is a mayseh brought down from the Vilna Gaon in which I think Reb Chaim Volozhin came to him and said he learned Masechta Sukka 14 times. The Gaon asked him how many times is Abaye mentioned, how many times is Rava mentioned? How many times is Sukka spelled with a vav, and how many times without.
He said the number of times with a vav was equal to the number of sukkos kesheiros in the mesechta; and the number without a vav was equal to the number of sukkos pesulos. (I also heard it may be the gematria of sukka with and without a vav that corresponds to the numbers of kesheiros and psulos.) I don’t know which is correct, or if I’m saying either of them right.
February 15, 2011 8:20 pm at 8:20 pm in reply to: Shabbos board games/activities for 9-10 year old boys #754347Pashuteh YidMemberThe best activity is fighting with his brothers and sisters.
Pashuteh YidMemberLet me add one of PY’s remazim.
The gemara on top of page 93a in Sanhedrin says Gedolim Tzaddikim Yoser Mimalachei Hashareis.
Roshei Teivos of first two words are Gimmel and Tzadi. Gematria 93 (same as page number).
Gematria of first word on page which is “Gedolim” is also 93.
Pashuteh YidMemberIf the girl is not too far, why not be a mensch and go out with her? What do you have to lose?
Pashuteh YidMemberMy father tells me the story that in one of the old hotels in the Catskills, a certain Rabbi was reading a beginner’s book on how to play golf. When my grandfather asked him why, he said he is the new golf-pro.
Pashuteh YidMemberIf one partner snubs his nose at things that are important to the other, such as family or hobbies and interests, that is a recipe for disaster. Take an interest in your spouse’s interests and family as if they were your own.
Pashuteh YidMemberSorry to hear everybody is leaving. Please reconsider. May you be blessed with good health and success in whatever you do.
Pashuteh YidMemberHe does not like being called Miss Dr. Pepper.
February 9, 2011 11:50 pm at 11:50 pm in reply to: Those who used to call R Blumenkrantz a"h for advice, who do you call? #756363Pashuteh YidMemberOne thing is that it may sometimes takes a bit of time for the Rav to get back to you. It used to be quicker, but the community grew, so don’t get frustrated.
February 9, 2011 11:04 pm at 11:04 pm in reply to: Those who used to call R Blumenkrantz a"h for advice, who do you call? #756362Pashuteh YidMemberYou’re welcome.
February 9, 2011 10:02 pm at 10:02 pm in reply to: Those who used to call R Blumenkrantz a"h for advice, who do you call? #756359Pashuteh YidMemberOfcourse, I know a perfect Rov for you whom I have used for years. A gaon shebgeonim, and one of the warmest and most aideleh people alive. Totally mekubal in and a product of the Yeshivishe velt. He is the Rov of a rather large kehilla so I hesitate posting his info online without asking him. He is busy yomam valayla with chesed, bikur cholim and shiurim, so I am worried if he receives a slew of new phone calls, he may simply not physically be able to function, as he is up most nights as it is.
I am sure privately I can give him one more person. Maybe the Mods will let you contact me.
Pashuteh YidMemberThere is a medrash that says it’ll be Kilobear vs. RuffRuff.
Pashuteh YidMemberThe most important thing Kilobear said was Oisvarf.
Pashuteh YidMemberAviE, are you a talmid of Rabbi Bechhofer? What is his background in these inyanim?
Pashuteh YidMemberTHere is a famous quote from somebody whom I don’t remember. “The difficult we do right away; the impossible takes us a bit longer.”
Pashuteh YidMemberThe 600k according to Rav Moshe’s chiddush is the number of people living in the city. Most people understand it as the number of people traveling through the street in question.
I think the language seems to be difficult according to Reb Moshe. Shishim Ribu bokekin bo seems to imply movement.
One other question I have in general is why the requirement for lechis on utility poles. Why does the pole itself not serve as the lechi? The nailing of lechis to the poles is what causes all the eruv fights among the non-religious, etc. Any mevinim here who can explain? I know the wire must be directly over the lechi, but doesn’t that usually happen with the pole itself?
Pashuteh YidMemberI was taking umbrage at the statement that the world would be better if there was no internet. The internet started as a way to send msgs and files among 7 research universities. Then more and more applications and uses came into being. But the idea of linking computers together is not at all traif, and is quite useful.
One cannot turn back the clock of technology and go back to the stone age. One must improve the world that is here now. Would the world be more perfect without cameras? It is actually cameras that cause the problems you refer to on the internet. People post photos and videos. Why blame the internet, and instead make a campaign to forbid cameras. Would anybody make a statement that in a perfect world there would be no cameras? But they have brought a lot of joy to people over the years, in addition to many educational and professional uses.
Saying what SJS said, that in a perfect world, there would be no improper sites on the internet makes much more sense than saying in a perfect world there would be no internet.
Pashuteh YidMemberSorry, I hit send button before I was finished. If you go into Command program (old DOS interface which you access via Start Menu/Command and then at the prompt type Format C: /P:7 /X, it should wipe out your whole disk and remove any traces of what was on there. (I don’t know if you even need the /X).
You will then have to reinstall your operating system and all programs. If you have the original windows CD, you would insert into the CD drive and then follow the instructions to reinstall everything. This can take about 2 hours sometimes. You must have all the original disks, though, as sometimes there is a second Drivers and Utilities disk.
But to physically destroy the machine seems like a waste.
Pashuteh YidMemberEven without any utilities, you could probably type Format C: /P:7 /X.
