And the cashier is messing up her store’s inventory control by doing that.
BTW, following the cashier’s instructions will result either in an overcharge or an undercharge of the deposit. Unless she scans all individually, there is no way the price will be right. You will either pay too much or too little, but certainly not the correct amount.

July 10, 2011 11:06 pm at 11:06 pm in reply to: What percentage of Spanish Jewry converted to Catholicism? #784155Pac / ManMemberIt should be noted that one is obligated to give their life rather than bow to the cross (even without believing it.) And in the Spanish case, the choice was expulsion, not execution.

July 10, 2011 10:05 pm at 10:05 pm in reply to: What percentage of Spanish Jewry converted to Catholicism? #784149Pac / ManMemberMS: 50% includes the richtiga converted as well as what I called marranos earlier (what is a better term for those that bowed to the cross and attended church without believing it in their heart?)
July 10, 2011 9:45 pm at 9:45 pm in reply to: A third of Litvish families I know, have one or more single daughters 25 and up #909281Pac / ManMemberAs far as the legality of it in the United States is concerned, it is only illegal to register more than one (simultaneous) marriage with the State marriage bureau/civil registrar. There are many many currently openly polygamous families in Utah, Texas, Connecticut, and various other States. They are careful to only have one civilally registered marriage (or none) on file. And that’s what they use for taxes. And they are not bothered or prosecuted by any gov’t agency, as it is fully legal to have whatever religious ceremonies they wish or whatever personal living arrangements they wish, with as many people living in their house as they wish, and there is no law against having multiple live-in girl friends. The last time the State even attempted a prosecution was in the 1940’s or ’50’s, and the State lost when it was thrown out of court, and they learnt their lesson. The ONLY time you will see a prosecution for polygamy now is when their is physical child abuse and underage marriage (i.e. A 13 year old girl – in NY State it is even legally possible to marry a 14 year old with judicial approval.)

July 10, 2011 8:27 pm at 8:27 pm in reply to: A third of Litvish families I know, have one or more single daughters 25 and up #909277Pac / ManMemberDaas: Why “should” she not “allow” her husband to take another? The Sefardim and Teimeini Yidden do, and the Vilna Gaon wanted to have Ashkenazic Jewry do so as well. Are you smarter than the GRA? (Rav Avigdor Miller, amongst others, was also not opposed to reimplementing polygamy.)

Pac / ManMemberThe story is a lie.
And the Daily News is shmutz (like the Post.)

Pac / ManMemberDid I ever tell the story of finding a 1943 copper penny?
Pac / ManMemberYou never objected to being called Mr. Wolf. Is it only the Jewish stuff that you object to?

July 1, 2011 5:44 pm at 5:44 pm in reply to: A third of Litvish families I know, have one or more single daughters 25 and up #909109Pac / ManMemberDr. P:
So you are advocating delegitimizing Shadchanim your wife’s friends believe are great Shadchanim. What convinces you that your wife’s side are so wrong that you would revoke those Shadchanim’s license to redt?
Pac / ManMemberWhy do you protest Reb Wolf?
Pac / ManMembergrada: those who cant get married because of various problems, were specifically excluded from this discussion. They are totally innocent and to be helped.
But someone is getting older single “because he didn’t meet his special person”, they ARE the problem.

June 28, 2011 10:40 pm at 10:40 pm in reply to: Parents Managing or Choosing Children's Shidduchim #781535Pac / ManMemberFor thousands of years Jewish parents married off young children. Apparently they were fine with the maturity, and so should we be. Maturity grows with time, as it did with our zaidas and bubbes.
Pac / ManMembercharlie: YCT is not Orthodox.
Pac / ManMemberYes.
Pac / ManMemberUnless it changed in the past few years. The yeshiva payphone was the best way to reach him.
June 28, 2011 8:00 pm at 8:00 pm in reply to: A third of Litvish families I know, have one or more single daughters 25 and up #909054Pac / ManMemberAZ: it’s only a problem if the boys don’t start at 18 also. If they do, then there is no problem.
Pac / ManMemberCall the Yeshiva payphone. I never had a problem reaching him.
Pac / ManMemberGavra: And where do you gather I’ve been a “machmir” on this issue? Au contraire, I’ve been taking the “meikel” position (like the Shulchan Aruch) in looking favorably at permitting yibum rather that assuring it.
And surely, gavra, you are not c”v pitting the Mechaber (and the Sefardish Rabbonim like Rav Ovadia Yosef shlit”a) “vs. Chazal” when they pasken in favor of yibum b’zman hazeh. There is no basis to such an accusation.
Pac / ManMemberLook at it again. I sourced that a rasha cannot by definition be a TC.
Pac / ManMemberI like to keep you waiting.
Besides, it’s so much fun seeing a bunch of people attacking the idea and then when the source comes they all fall silent.
Just kidding. Actually, I am still trying to find the source since it has been a while since I remember it.
Pac / ManMemberI guess that means more than a minyan.
Pac / ManMemberon the ball: I don’t see any “tragedy” if the yevama stays married to the cheresh.
Pac / ManMemberDY: The pronounciation they use is the same, so it may be more of an issue when verbalized (or written in Hebrew.)
Pac / ManMemberIf one wear sandals and skips the tie (over his Hawaiian shirt – also not against halacha, right?), then even I agree there is nothing wrong if he takes off his Borsalino hat when sitting down with with the girl on their first date.
Pac / ManMemberDY: You still have time to edit your “your” to “you’re”.
Pac / ManMemberBusy seeing patients.
Pac / ManMemberHe is not able to divorce her.
Pac / ManMembersof davar: a besula gets a different (higher value) kesuba than one who isn’t, that refers to her as a besula in the text of the kesuba.
Also, if she represented herself as a besula, and after the wedding he realizes she isn’t, he can bring her to beis din to “nullify” the marriage as if it never happened (no divorce necessary.)
Pac / ManMemberCall a car service for her.
Pac / ManMemberMaybe he can also pretend he is wearing a shirt without actually wearing it.
Pac / ManMemberWhenever one mispronounces a word in tefila, a deformed malach is created that will testify against him in Beis Din shel Mala.
Pac / ManMemberWeiner’s mother IS Jewish. This fact has been covered by YWN. Don’t blame the poor mother for her wayward son.
Pac / ManMemberTaken out of context.
Pac / ManMemberAgreed!
Pac / ManMemberNu, some BT’s miss pork. They live without it nonetheless.
Pac / ManMemberHis father didn’t say no.
Pac / ManMemberPre-zionism means pre-1898, when the zionists made clear their intentions to take over Palestine from the Arabs.
Pac / ManMemberHis father never said no.
Pac / ManMemberHaifa: Israel is in galus too.
Pac / ManMemberkapusta: you’ve been part of the chevra here having insider conversations on the forum discussing personal stuff. You and Yossi and some others.
Pac / ManMemberSilentOne:
Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh Deah 252:8, as well as the Mishna in Horayis 13a, and the Rambam on that Mishna.
