oyyoyyoyParticipantoyyoyyoyParticipant
sounds like they got their punishment then. jk.
What is the purpose of a punishment? I always assumed that a punishment (like jail) accomplishes twofold. A)dangerous person isnt around B)it’s a deterrent. “A)” is out of this equation
A deterrent is not only meant for the one getting the punishment, it is for all others to know what happens when u misbehave. If noone got punished when pushment time came then there would be no fear of punishment. However, a severe punishment (including people just knowing u are an abuser) may be enough a deterrent even if only 25% of the time a person is punnished. Plus, its not like people know he got of the hook maybe they will too.
I say let him live
oyyoyyoyParticipantcool didnt see this thread.
First to answer PAA in lomdish terms you would also say “mimaila u exist” type. Also i think its just an easy way to remember the shprach.
Sam2- “I meant you only definitely exist in your own thoughts. Everything else may or may not exist. But since we can’t be sure of their existence, we must assume they don’t exist.”>
Can u please explain that to me? why must we asume that?
Also i dont think he means you only exist in your thoughts. You ACTUALLY exist because otherwise you cant be HAVING any thoughts so u MUST actually exist. no?
oyyoyyoyParticipant“humanely” haha
YK2- there are other examples i dont know of offhand. Shaving during sefirah, wearing titzis out?
oyyoyyoyParticipantAnother reason why im an am haaretz. Never got why yiddishkeit allows stuff for parnasah reasons. You’l tell me darkei noam or something but i still dont get it. Anyone know how to work this out? Chol hamoed- great example. Daver haavud? thats okay then, otherwise youre being mevazeh moados and dont have a chelek in olam habah.
oyyoyyoyParticipantthink he was kidding. i hear about other times takkah, i may agree then, must think about it.
oyyoyyoyParticipantyekke2 cool tayna but i think thats theres a difference. dont know if by nedarim u have to say theres always hanaah by divrei torah, just that cuz hanaah is part of the nitnu it breaks lav lehonos nitnu. its hard to say every time you learn you have haanah.
oyyoyyoyParticipantAnd if you are so against smart phones, why are you here?
really? first of all like everyone else said this site has nothing to do with owning smart phones. second who cares what im doing? i can separate what i do from my thoughts on what is right and what is wrong. plus, something on such a large scale-affecting the public- is so much easier to remove your personal negius from and admit that there is an issue.
as for the rest, think DY explained why you were being dishonest.

oyyoyyoyParticipantzdad ya i know moral victory wtvr. Why the heck is married jewish people watching porn, getting sucked into stuff turning them into introverted freaks, destroying families, something which applies to every single person,
not a major issue? not a battle that can be “morally won”?
oyyoyyoyParticipantreally?! when should a family do something other than eating a shabbos meal together?
oyyoyyoyParticipantzdad so ur saying which battle should be fought? tad confused.
Personally i dont know of that many molestation cases, and by extension their cover ups, but i dont think its a problem that should be so public. At least the specifics of cases shoulnt be.
Dont know which leader only poo poos those issues but aside from charlies chevra everyone warns of the dangers the internet puts you in. Are you actually saying there is noone you look up to? There isnt any rabbi that wasnt informed about molestations going on? A rabbi that does in fact try to take care of both these issues?
oyyoyyoyParticipanti think i was the first one to bring up the child aspect, otherwise for the most part people (me included) were talking about adults
oyyoyyoyParticipantOnce we’re tallying up who’s on what side, counta me in.
I agree, rabbis should not come out against every little thing as that
eventually burns us out from listening ( case in point- go to jerusalem and see if anyone cares about any of the large amount of kol korays plastered everywhere)
But this isnt just an issue where each person can try to help the klal and make a difference. Not an issue like molestation which really only happens here and there (terrible nonetheless i know). We have here a problem that literally pertains to everyone, to their own lives. I know parents that had no clue about the dangers until they had their eyes opened to what happens when you give a child a smartphone.
oyyoyyoyParticipantbig mazal tov!
oyyoyyoyParticipantthe real march madness
oyyoyyoyParticipanthaha, go put out a cigarette on shabbos
thought this thread wud be about which ones arent a shaila on pesach
oyyoyyoyParticipantits funny ur name is tzvei dinim amd u cant keep these 2 issues separated
oyyoyyoyParticipantcould be more of a problem socialy, ie other bochrim looking at u quizzically, than an hanhalah issue
oyyoyyoyParticipantSo in the big colleges they bring in stupid people with solid sports skills who wont have low self-esteem in order that the lower tier students shudntfeel theyre on the lower tier.
Yeshivas cant really do that.
If your point is that yeshivas should have a wider range of subjects to learn, i dont see why they have to try to fit what someone else thinks shud be learnt into their syllabus.
If your point is self esteem related, true that may be an issue but if the guys not cut out for learning iyun doesnt mean they shud have mandatory nach for this guy to shine.
oyyoyyoyParticipantIn the mir my 2nd seder chavrusah told me that our first seder maggid shiur told him that his second seder shud be mah shelibo chafetz.
Expression is a weird word to use for this. If theres a problem it has nothing to do with expressing oneself in learning. Learning isnt a tool to express oneself with. Maybe lack of encouragement or appreciation like ubiquitin said.
oyyoyyoyParticipantMammele-Oyoy: on what evidence scientific or otherwise do you base your assumption that by stopping cold turkey there is a greater chance of relapsing?
Experience. Mine, my friends’, and a therapist’s held in high esteem. But you are correct, this doesnt apply in every case of stopping cold turkey. It depends on the size of the turkey and how cold youre stopping.
oyyoyyoyParticipantwhat about showers?
oyyoyyoyParticipantEven if its assur, i always thought that if by stopping cold turkey odds are you’ll relapse then its not called stopping. Limiting shudnt be out of the question just because a person will be actively doing something they know is wrong.
oyyoyyoyParticipantmy friend said “i go eleven pm, noone goes there then.” i had another friend when i was in israel who went at 630 am and one went 1 am. Better Health Studios in boro park sounds good but i dont know so much about it.
oyyoyyoyParticipantsaw an article about a kosher gym with personal trainer in boro park. i’ll try to find it. also, shmoozed with some people about this and they said that they go at hrs when noones around
oyyoyyoyParticipantFNY- you wanna know why i think people think its fine. True, less people said so than i thought with my original scan of this thread.
you said “Being that everything is muttar until proven assur, and being that no credible source was given citing an issur [yet], this thread points to the assumption that mixed gyms are muttar. If you disagree, prove your point. As always, please consult with a rabbi before providing practical advice toward chumros and even toward kulos.” this seems like your main argument.
First, like some have already said, our topic is something that, to my knowledge, most orthodox consider a problem. Next, i agree with you that just being machmir always without finding whether something is really asur or not is wrong. The same way something assur is assur, something may be muttar and people shudnt be stopped from doing whats ok. Again, saying im not a rabbi. Due to the fact that none of us here are, this attitude doesnt work here.
You bring up good points, i dont have time and patience to respond right now to the rest of what you wrote. Just saying for now that on a largescale issue like this, i dont think people shud say “hey, noone proved it assur”
Flatbusher– i dont know how your rant relates to anything i said. BTW I admitted from the get-go that i’m a rasha. That doesnt mean i shudnt stand up when i think a large amount of people are being led in the wrong way regarding issues of kedusha and the flippancy in which it’s made away.
oyyoyyoyParticipantit’s my own feeling that it isnt ok but im not a rabbi. but neither are the people saying its fine so were all just saying our opinions. DY basicly did a great job by hisself showing and explaining why it shud be avoided, and i think common sense and a lack of complete amaaratzus wud agree. that’s who.
if you mean why do i feel it’s my job to let people know it isnt alright to go to a mixed gym, well i think most people watching a pirtza in klal yisroel going on and can stop it would at least try. i can not and will not sit idly by when someone with a lesschumra agenda wants to publicly disregard/promote basic shmirah for kedushah. if people wanna go somewhere assur i cudnt care less. dont go around saying “why is everyone being so strict? theres nothing wrong”
oyyoyyoyParticipantWere the references asked specifically about intelligence?
oyyoyyoyParticipantright. what you were saying was- don’t sit there in the house telling everyone to be makpid not to go to the gym while at the same time using unfiltered internet which itself has its pitfalls. and i’m saying i think it may be kinda important to correct the populace about the notion that mixed gyms are ok.
oyyoyyoyParticipantPlumber- If not then going to a mixed gym is probably better for your neshama than staying at home
Sweet but possibly untrue. And btw, idk if staying at home is as bad as telling a public forum theres nothing wrong with going to a mixed gym.
oyyoyyoyParticipantOn the contrary, if you have the self control and motivation to work out on a regular basis, you have the self control and motivation to mind your own business at the gym.
I dont know how that follows. Yes, i think it’s harder to control oneself from these avairos (workout in workout out) than working out on a regular basis. I also think the spiritual health at risk outweighs the physical health risk of not going to the gym.
Gyms are not overrated. Where in your house do you find the room to keep all the equipment that the gyms have.
Truth is i was thinking more about motivation (ie working out at home which has the “too easy=lazy paradox”) when i wrote gyms are overrated. Regarding money as well, i was thinking buying your own treadmill and some weights would be enough and cheaper than a membership in the long run (A PUN!). As i was going to say, and then went thru the thread a bit and saw DY beat me to it, theres health reasons and then theres cosmetic reasons. Even for cosmetic purposes this cud be fine. I admit i dont know so much about gyms but thats partially cause i hold theyre overrated.
i understand people wanna look good. they shudnt be getting good looks at the same time.
oyyoyyoyParticipantBut really, is that a basis for divorce or murder?
im not sure whether giving the benefit of doubt here means youre joking or youre serious
oyyoyyoyParticipantGyms are overrated. If you dont have the self control to workout without it then you obviously dont have the self control to be shomer ainayim.
oyyoyyoyParticipantFlatbusher- dont know what the mods will let of this quote but
“Canoodle.com asked 1,500 of its members if the gym is a dating hotspot with the potential for meeting a future partner. Not surprising, 62% of those surveyed stated the gym is a good place to meet new people, with three quarters preferring it to a bar. An overwhelming 80% believed an interest in physical fitness is a significant characteristic of a potential partner, which would also encourage future workouts together.”
And i don’t know how you expect to hear personal experience about this. Here’s some personal experience though: if my wife knew how many times i grab a quick glance when we pass by a gym shed kill me and divorce me
oyyoyyoyParticipantgoyim get to know people at the gym all the time. (they even have dating gyms.) prety sure i heard on the radio that its actually one of the top places people meet.
oyyoyyoyParticipantThank you Be Good. This is all news to me.
oyyoyyoyParticipantthe over all number of large singles.
the reason for the shidduch crisis is whatever you really hate about the shidduch system and/or its users.
oyyoyyoyParticipantcant find any reviews about it
oyyoyyoyParticipantIf someone decides upon first sight that this is not the girl he’s been hoping for and thus wants to take her to a lesser place, he’s not mature enough to date
Sure. He may end up loving her despite her sumo resemblance.
