oomisParticipant
I hate these things also. Total strangers want to “link in” with mem and when i ignore the request, I get follow up e-mails for weeks. When I try to go to the site to officially decline, I can’t get into it.
oomisParticipantDefinite plus in MY book. The ONLY downside (and it really should not be considered as such), is the same one as with anyone in a medical field where the services might be needed unexpectedly or in the middle of the night). Hatzolah members (and I feel that Chaverim also merit this) are malachim.
oomisParticipantUnquestionably, there is a greater need today for women to know at least SOME aspects of halacha, than in generations past. A woman certainly has to know laws pertaining to nashim. Is that not Torah? She needs to know enough Torah to be able to help her children with their homework, as most of the dads are not doing that on a regular basis. The Torah that most of us females learned is generally not what the men are learning, and I will bet you every Aleph that I ever earned in Limudei Kodesh that women know Tanach, hashkafa, and, certain dinim better than many men. Now, it’s possible I exaggerate, but I honestly don’t think so. Men are Gemarah oriented, women are generally more topic-oriented.
I enjoy a really excellent Chumash shiur, and I go to one every week, and also to a Hashkafa class early Sunday mornings, where we learn from a specific Godol’s teaching that year. This season we are learning from R’ Shmulevitz’ works, last year we learned from Rav Lopian’s “Michtav”. Etc., etc. It certainly does not hurt for women to be better-versed in mussar and relevant teachings.
I personally was always very much fulfilled to be a wife and mother, and now grandmother. I never felt I was somehow lesser a jew and person because I was not learning Gemarah. Not all women are content with that these days, and that IMO is because they have been raised in a very different world from the one in which I was. I am not certain it is to the betterment of society.
oomisParticipantI wasn’t really kidding about the maror, but it can be a very VERY strong, make your eyes water, so DON’T really take a good sniff of it, but a gentle one (if you go that route). You wanted home remedies. My best advice is to speak to your doctor.
Here is a cautionary tale, btw. NEVER take what your doctor says, at face value. Ask questions, be proactive, informed patients, know what to expect, know why certain tests are ordered and what their results are when the doc gets them. If you don’t chaap what the doc is saying, ask him/her to explain it in words that the layperson can understand. Don’t be shy about that.
February 28, 2014 6:10 pm at 6:10 pm in reply to: What's your style when poor people come collecting at your door? #1006210oomisParticipantI am not an ashir (ashira), but I have married off two kids and NEITHER one was for anything remotely resembling $100,000. If I had to find that kind of money every time one of my children was about to get married, the two who are married would still be single. Where did this number come from???????

February 27, 2014 5:57 pm at 5:57 pm in reply to: what is your worst language? what's ur favorite? #1006511oomisParticipantI am not re-reading this, but the only language I actually HATE is the foul type. Nivul peh ranks highest on my hit lit, along with Loshon Hara (which is harder to avoid).
February 27, 2014 5:54 pm at 5:54 pm in reply to: What's your style when poor people come collecting at your door? #1006193oomisParticipantIf it is at night, I will not open the door anymore. If it in the day and I am alone, ditto. I have handed money through my mail slot, and with wishes for hatzlacha. I NEVER write checks, and never will, unless I personally know the collector and for what he is collecting. That only happens when little kids come around for a Pesach candy order.
oomisParticipantAll cheeses that are made with rennet or whatever it is that is used to make the cheese, need hashgocha.Otherwise, we could all eat Kraft cheeses.
oomisParticipantWho is talking about bizayon Chas v’sholom? It makes the megillah come alive for the children in shul and holds their attention so they don’t carry on. I know VERY frum and choshuvah people who lein with such expression, and the leining was way more meaningful, and everyone hung on every word.
oomisParticipantNot joking – take a good whiff of fresh ground white horseradish. Every erve Pesach my mom and then my brother in later yeasrs, would grind it for the maror, and one whiff cured me of any sinus issues I might have had.
If you have something for such a duration of time, a doc visit IS in order. You might even need antibiotics if you have a sinus infection. The Neti pot is only good if you can coordinate yourself enough to actually use it correctly. I never could.
I never heard of any stricture on zinc before. ColdEeze helps me. Refuah shelaima. Vitamin C is useless IMO. But general good diet and sleeping patterns are crucial.
oomisParticipantSorry, but there is something fishy about that entire post!
On a scale of 1-10 it’s minus 1. If this poster ever wrote something good, it was a fluke. I am fin-ished now.
February 27, 2014 1:34 pm at 1:34 pm in reply to: Which CR poster are you going as this purim? #1006246oomisParticipantI am going as Oomis and I am dressing frumpy-housewife.
oomisParticipantI personally do NOT like to see posts banned, unless the language is offensive, or if someone is being really mean-spirited or very disrespectful whether to another poster or about the subject thread. Censorship has never been something I particularly like, except in certain cases. This is a Yeshiva World CR, so of course, foul language or a lack of menschlechkeit should be exed out. But sometimes people have been edited for content and they don’t know why. i try to be fairly benign in my postings even when I have a strong opinion. I think I am a careful and respectful poster, but I have had a post or two that never saw the light of day in the CR, and I would have appreciated knowing why.
sometimes they don’t know why because they don’t recognize the lack of mentchlichkiet, sometimes I think they do know, even though they ask.
February 25, 2014 5:14 pm at 5:14 pm in reply to: Traumatizing Children with Horrific Tales #1006182oomisParticipantTelling the story of the Golem to a very young child is like taking that child to see Frankenstein’s monster. Just because it is a Jewish theme, and a story of how Jews were protected by the Golem, does not make it less frightening. And worse, because it IS Jewish, it is more believable to a child that there could really be such a creature even today. Wait until they are older.
oomisParticipantWhat’s worse is when YOU shovel everything and either the City plows it right over, or once you move your car out, someone else takes your freshly shoveled spot and doesn’t move for days. Both happened to me.
oomisParticipantI once read a novel about the Aztec Indians, in which there was a discussion about the search for a permanent purple dye which came from the excretion of a certain type of snail (sound familiar?). The author, Gary Jennings, is known for his extensive historical research to give authenticity to his works. Perhaps, like the chilazon for techeiles, there is likewise a sea animal from which the purple pigment was derived. Anyone know the origins of argaman?
oomisParticipantMy parents O”H used to listen to him every day; I thought his show was “The Morning Simcha,” but I could be mistaken(hey…it’s been known to happen).
oomisParticipantAfter 1 – 2 years one get certified… “
After a couple of years here, I think I might be certifiable…
oomisParticipantLF. from your mouth…etc. etc. Thank you. Hope Hashem agrees.
Y&P (why do I suddenly feel like I need to go shopping???), WHO does not remember I’ve Got a Secret and Beat the Clock (hosted by Bud Collier – the original voice of Superman on the radio)? Now THOSE were game shows (Password was my favorite, though).
oomisParticipantAmein and thanks, Mom12. You, too. (I’ll settle for 100 – I’m not greedy).
oomisParticipantLF, todah rabbah and amein!!!!!!
oomisParticipantOomis: Ta’anis Esther, if I recall correctly is to commemorate the three day fasting of the Yidden in Shushan, and the fasting of all the Yidden the day before the want out at war to protect themselves. We fast to memorialize the concept that HaShem is ???? ?????? ????. That’s not really a contradiction to merriment. “
Yes, but Esther Hamalka believed herself to possibly be about to be executed a la Vashti. That was certainly a serious and somber moment, and I personally (again, NOT paskening, this is just my own personal choice on a fast day)don’t feel that of all days, that bedavka on a fast day I have a great need to listen to music. I certainly don’t feel that obligates anyone else, unless there is a clear halacha regarding this.
oomisParticipantI never have hidden my age. I am thankful to B”H have reached 62, and hope it is truly middle age.
And with all these affirmations of being the REAL RZ, I feel like I am in an episode of “To Tell the Truth” or “What’s My Line?” For those who do not own a TV, or whose parents were in diapers in the 1950s and 1960s, ignore the above.
oomisParticipantPerhaps Oomis’s doctor meant that using Silvadine would help reduce pain in the long term. But, since Oomis understood it as immediate, it worked via a combination of placebo effect and vasaline effect. “
Thank you, but not so. The doctor was very specific that the cream would eliminate the pain. I didn’t even realize that it had antibiotic properties until later on. As to placebo effect. if one has a painful burn, I am seriously doubtful that a placebo would give immediate relief. Many people mistakenly believed that applications of butter or ice would relieve the pain, when in fact it makes the burn worse.
oomisParticipantI am not paskening anything whatsoever, this is strictly from my emotional reaction to the question – but, if I am already fasting for a higher purpose, whether it is the aveilus of the churban, or to commemmorate the nisayon of Esther Hamalkah and Klal Yisroel, or the death of Gedalyah, it just would seem to not be in the spirit of those events to be listening to music. Perhaps it IS permitted, and that’s why we have Halachos and do not reply on our personal emotional responses for the proper thing to do – I personally would look for something else to do that seems more in line with the day at hand.
oomisParticipantOK. This is me, dropping this conversation with you, because it is going nowhere. I respect your opinion but disagree. For the rest of us, soaking in cold water followed by application of Silvadene really works very well for many. But PLEASE check with your doctor.
February 20, 2014 5:06 pm at 5:06 pm in reply to: Morons who put stuff besides jelly in sufguniyois #1004563oomisParticipantGolfer, you are turning my head!!!!!! Amein to that beautiful bracha. Halevai.
Popa – you should BE so lucky to eat my hamantashen!!! They are scrumptious. I take no credit. My mom O”H got me started on the right road to Purim baking. I have had many, many different types of hamantashen over the last 60+ years, all of them very tasty. But not a single one has ever been as well-received and delicious as hers. Not for my family, anyway.
February 20, 2014 1:54 pm at 1:54 pm in reply to: Morons who put stuff besides jelly in sufguniyois #1004559oomisParticipantPurim is coming, NOT Chanukah! You meant Hamantashen, right? And personally, I am opposed to anything in hamantashen but prune lekvar mixed with lemon juice, finely chopped walnuts and allspice. Or mohn. No jelly.
oomisParticipantYou just reminded me (and this is not a joke, btw) that I had an Adar question (my rov is not able to be easily reached in the daytime). It’s not a SHAILAH shailah, so relax, but I heard two conflicting things this week about yartzeits in an uber yohr, and I wondered what the good people of the CR know.
My friend just told me that her rov paskened that she should actually observe her mother’s yartzeit (she was nifteres three days after Purim) on that same date in Adar Rishon AND also with a licht on Adar Sheini. Her rov is chassidish, if that makes a difference. Would it be a chassidish minhag? The Lubavitch told her the same thing as her rov.
I always thought that when a yartzeit occurs in Adar, it is always observed in Adar Sheini of a leap year. The Zayin Adar Seudah is in Adar Sheini. Purim is in Adar Sheini.
Some thoughts about this?
oomisParticipantHealth, I am sure you are well-intentioned, and your advice has often been very knowledgeable and helpful, and it IS appreciated at those times. But sometimes you get a little fixated more on being “right” rather than helpful, and then it becomes a little harder to hear the wisdom that you DO have.
oomisParticipantWhat’s wrong with “Your Humble Servant?” I would not mind having a humble servant (especially at Pesach time).
oomisParticipantNot really. Your disagreement has to be based on logic.
The only way Silvadene gives any pain relief is because it’s a cream (i.e. white Vaseline) and/or the placebo effect! “
Logic dictates that if I have a burn and put Silvadene on it and the burn INSTANTLY stops hurting, and the same does NOT hold true for putting ‘white vaseline” on it, that it is not a placebo effect. It is the Silvadene. And the fact that the doctor himself prescribed it (and I quote)”to eliminate the pain and infection potential,” tends to give more weight to his opinion than someone else’s.
oomisParticipantAPY, you just stole my thunder… I WAS GONNA WRITE THAT!!!!!
February 19, 2014 3:25 am at 3:25 am in reply to: Why is child marriage being promoted on this site? #1004774oomisParticipantMaybe they are talking about a play date…
oomisParticipantActually – I never really READ the title at all, just saw Popa’s question and answered it. That will teach me to assume.
I think we should invite Mordechai Schmutter to join in, and have dueling columnists. Dave Barry is welcome, too. I would add in my 2 cents, but with the cost of inflation it wouldn’t be worth much.
oomisParticipantI really hope it IS you, because I never had the guts to write to the FJJ to comment on a Rocky letter. At least here, (assuming you are you and not a crass impersonator), I get to tell you thanks for making me repeatedly laugh out loud on Shabbos, and having everyone around me think I have apparently lost my mind!
oomisParticipantAll the answers are C.
oomisParticipantI think PBA should be because controversy makes life more interesting”
You want CONTROVERSY??? How about Chief Rabbah of the CR!!!!!!
oomisParticipantI think we should refrain from asking such personal questions of someone who might want to keep such stuff private. And BOY, did I misread the title of this thread!
oomisParticipantJust mention Oomis in the CR, and that will take care of your problems.”
OR – just say, “Hi to all my friends in the CR.” V’hamayvin yavin, no?
oomisParticipantSorry, a least Solarcaine has an anesthetic in it, while Silvadene does’t! I posted this above -“Use Bacitracin, it’s OTC and it’s cheaper than Silvadene.”
I guess we have to agree to disagree. In my personal experience with Silvadene, I have found it to be extremely excellent as an anesthetic for the burn pain.
oomisParticipantI haven’t told it yet.
oomisParticipantcheck for trauma”
Good point!
And I would add another caveat; PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not ever leave boiling pots with the handles turned outward, or anything hot on the front burners unless you are there watching those pots. Kids have a scary way of trying to climb up to the stovetop when your back is turned “just for a second,” and pull pots down on themselves. it happened to my neighbor’s child when we had just moved in. I had not even met the neighbor, when a child came running for help because her sibling had overturned a pot of soup and received several (thankfully not hospital-worthy) painful burns.
oomisParticipantY&P, if it is really you, then I want a mention in your next letter to the editor (then we will know for certain). 🙂
oomisParticipantI love Rocky’s “long-winded” letters and look forward to them. I find it interesting to do it that way as opposed to a column. The Letters to the Editor are the very first thing I turn to. And even ont he rare occasion that I slightly disagree with something he has written, I still think he is intelligent and very, very funny.
oomisParticipantAs many of you know, I actually reconnected with a dear friend with whom I had lost touch for a very long time. We only realized who each other was, through a series of hashgocha protis events in the CR. I do know one or two other people here for a certainty, and am sure there are others,as well, though I have not yet managed to figure out who is who.
oomisParticipantNot a placebo effect, Health. I have over my six decades burned my hand on many a stupid occasion, and other so-called burn ointments did zip (and certain types of ointments can make the burn worse). Stuff like Solarcaine, etc. never really helped except for a minute or so. Silvadene was the only effective treatment we have ever used, and it TOTALLY stopped the pain.
For a more serious burn, a doctor should ALWAYS be consulted, as infection could set in, and there might be more damage to the underlayers of skin. And if it is chas v’sholom a child who is injured, I don’t care how minor the burn seems, I would call the doctor.
oomisParticipantOP = Original Poster – sorry, Y&P, but your writing style just ain’t like Rocky’s! Try again…
oomisParticipantApparently you have MPD, Yashi, Pember, and Rocky. Pick one persona and stick with it. 🙂
