OneOfManyParticipantA know a couple of people with this problem who got extensions – as ilovetheholyland said, you don’t even have to necessarily go longer.
OneOfManyParticipantI agree with you, Jothar. People have a right to anonymity, even if they don’t understand how valuable it is.

Rach was on her way to her wolf-granny with a basketful of nice, hot lamb stew. Becky decided to join Rach on her trek through the deep, spooky, LOL-infested woods. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to poor little girls, the nefarious storytellers randomly decided to put Daylight Savings in effect, so it was actually LATER than the good, responsible girls (who were quite yekkish, in fact) thought…

This most creative method of disposing of the sartorial irritation became so popular that a whole new brand of cuisine was created – a la lint. In fact, an entire industry was built capitalizing on the abundance of this pesky pocket fluff – lint-based candles, Evil Linto action figures, eco-friendly lint handbags and scarves, and even compacted-lint bicycles! The international committee of lint watchdogs dispelled the alarm, thanking their luck for this most unexpected outcome. But Hugh R. Lintfree was vigilant. OneOfManyParticipantModerator 80:
the premise of Judaism in this regard is that there is reward AND PUNISHMENT in this world and certainly in the next for ALL our actions.
there are consequences NEGATIVE and positive.
Gehinnom is a fundamental concept as is the reward in the next world
The fact that our religion comprehends positive and negative elements does not necessarily negate the fact the the ESSENTIAL premise is positive.
An example: the typical family metes out punishment and reward based on behavior. And yet, in “functional” families the general mood and mindset is positive – rewards and praise vs. threats to promote compliance. Families where obedience is ensured with an an emphasis on negative enforcement (criticism, threats, and fear) are usually less than functional. I’m not saying that this is always the case, but in my personal experience, the general trend is so.
In Judaism, there is an awareness that we will suffer consequences if we sin. Yet, to quash all positive aspects of our religion with a no-tolerance, fear-based system, seems not only counter-productive, but even against Hashem’s aims (kaviyachol). Hashem Himself says He is “????? ????? ??????????” and “?????? ?????? ???????? ??????????” – more eager and willing to reward than punish. So why shouldn’t we try to emulate Him? I mean, any policy held by Hashem has what to recommend it…

OneOfManyParticipantModerator-80: You can believe in gehennom and corporal punishment without advocating it as a means of ENFORCEMENT. Which is “fire and brimstone” religion is. I think the premise of Judaism is positive, unlike that of the Christains.
OneOfManyParticipantI disagree with the original poster’s premise. In our times, negative reinforcement as a policy can only be detrimental. Not only would it NOT instill yiras shomayim into slipping individuals, but it would probably further their disillusion with Yiddishkeit. Showing them concepts of punishment that are not concretely applicable to them has no practical purpose.
I don’t think that the motivation in most cases is lack of fear. The thought of gehennom is not what inspires ME not to sin – it’s my conviction in what is right that does. There are so many mixed messages being given to our youth that only the strongest can claim such conviction. I think that if people try help the confused BEFORE their confusion precludes their belief in Yiddishkeit, there really would be little need for negative reinforcement. Wouldn’t that be ideal?
Tthen again, this idea may be as practical to implement as the OP’s is. I don’t know. But a little love and understanding goes a long way.
OneOfManyParticipantshmoel:
We don’t discard a posuk in the Torah (fire and brimstone) because goyim use it in a messed up way.
Was I suggesting that…?
My point is while the concept of “fire and brimstone” is fundamental to goyish religion (as indicated by the original poster of this expression), there is little precedent to indicate that it is to ours. (The posuk merely coins the term. It does not refer to this concept at all.) Do you REALLY want to adopt such a system? (Especially since it seems to be working out SO well for them…)
OneOfManyParticipantshmoel:
I don’t know, or care, who Dante was, but “Fire & Brimstone” is a verse from the Torah.
Yet is used primarily to describe a Christain method of preaching. Hm.

OneOfManyParticipantInteresting story about handshakes and kiddush/chillul Hashem:
An interviewer once tried to shake my hand, and when I told him that I couldn’t, he was very curious as to why. So I explained. I got the job. And he told me that he picked me specifically because he was very impressed with me at my interview (and I mamish didn’t do anything else especially impressive).
OneOfManyParticipantMy final remarks on this thread:
OneOfManyParticipantpopa_bar_abba: I’m really sorry, but I can’t confine the information I gave to an exact definition in a specified chapter. I know this may may sound like a cop-out, but my own understanding really didn’t come from reading exact “definitions” – it came from assimilating the basic principles and reading the case studies. As this IS a field compiled almost exclusively by case law.
I’m not professing to be a lawyer or an expert in this field. I can only claim for myself very eclectic tastes in reading. If you really feel I am in error, you are most assuredly at liberty to disregard anything I say. I won’t hold it against you. 🙂
OneOfManyParticipantWhen the garbage can is full, but nobody wants to take it out, so they keep compacting the garbage – so then, when someone finally takes it out, the bottom of the bag falls out.
OneOfManyParticipantIt’s long, but definitely worth reading. No need to apologize for it. 🙂
OneOfManyParticipantgavra_at_work: I don’t know if it’s even on the table, but I think right-left separation would be the least objectionable (since it doesn’t have the appearance of discrimination).
