yitzchokm: First off, I was just attacking your attack on Sam2 because it made no sense. That’s all. Second, I think you are misunderstanding the point of contention here. I, for one, have no problem with the Gerrer way of life (inasmuch as it doesn’t affect me, of course). The issue is that it’s being touted as the standard that everyone really should be complying to. Their interpretations may be valid, but are no more or less than anyone else’s. So to say that the Gerrer way of life has more intrinsic kedusha and tahara is very condescending and unfair.

Your comparing an act (holding hands with one’s wife) that you are forbidden to do at all (besides the wife, which is “mutter”) to an act that Jews can do at any time.

Was there logic in that statement?

Could be, but if you say in a Biology report that the function of animals is to bring as korbanos, you might get points off. Alternatively, if you started blathering on about food chains and ecological niches in a Hashkafa paper, you might get blasted. Just saying.

Sam2: That very monochromatic world where everyone wears sparkly pink dresses and bad guys always do teshuva (or have their memories wiped). No offense, but I did not like them even when I was 8. (I did like The Land of Oz, though, but was heartily annoyed when they made Tip into a sparkly fairy princess.)

No, I think girls like expensive glittery things, and De Beers or whoever just directed that inclination toward diamonds. Don’t go telling me women didn’t like ornaments and baubles earlier than 100 years ago, because I’m certain that’s not true.

However, I put this point to you — was it a good thing that Haman was killed even though it was a non-Jew who did it?

Well, maybe a Jew did it. I thinks it’s not just possible but likely. At any rate, it was definitely done from a Jew’s initiative. If someone dies as a result of your actions, doesn’t it count as if you killed him?

Or, let’s put this hypothetical out to you. Amalek is engaged in a bloody war with Moab. Do we go to war with the Moabites to stop them from killing the Amalekites so we can do it ourselves, or do we let the Moabites try anyway and say that’s it’s not worth Jewish blood to save the Amalekites if others are willing to do the killing?

Or are we allowed to join ranks with them to kill the Amaleikim? (That seems to me the best solution. I guess that presupposes that what they are doing does count in fulfillment of Hashem’s will.)

But is he really doing anything meaningful if the mitzvah is for US to kill him? Would another goy be fulfilling Hashem’s will if he killed an Amaleiki?
