OneOfManyParticipant
Why are you making this about English? Because it isn’t. It’s also not about me (or you).
OneOfManyParticipantNo biggee – she can just burn his supper.
OneOfManyParticipantSefer Hachinuch is a good sefer to learn – not too heavy or scathing. Sefer Kuzari is also interesting (if you are into stuff like that.)
OneOfManyParticipantIf they did, they would be more apologetic about their English, not less.
OneOfManyParticipantIf they turned into anything, they turned into lizards. Not birds. -_-
OneOfManyParticipantgavra: I learned what Hagiographa means in limudei kodesh, not English. 😛
OneOfManyParticipantI believe that a person must have a solid (it need not be articulate) command of one language. If they don’t, then they are incompetent. If they feel superior in a shaky command of several languages, then I would call them an idiot.
Did that help clarify things?
OneOfManyParticipantyekke2: There are philosophical implications to the question – that are validated, in fact, by technical explanations of the phenomenon. Technically, sound waves needs to be processed by aural receptors before you can call it sound (because the waves that are in the air are actually changed by your ear, creating what you hear.) This ties into an issue that a large body of philosophy is concerned about – human perception and reality.
But really, unless you like them from the purely analytical perspective, such conundrums are best summed up as “the finding of bad reasons for what we believe upon instinct.”
OneOfManyParticipantTCG: Girls’ schools do. BYBP has options of French, Spanish, Russian (and Yiddish :P), Manhattan High offers Mandarin, and my high school offered French (at the expense of Yiddish – they dropped the Yiddish class my freshman year).
OneOfManyParticipantWIY: The point is that the sound that you hear is not just registered by your ear – it is synthesized by it. So calling sound waves sound (which is not a very solid delineation, Wikipedia or not – what about the ultrasonic vibrations that are sound to dogs? Note the label ultrasonic) is rather imprecise – because you do not hear sound waves. You hear sound, created by the resonance of the waves on your ear stuffs.
OneOfManyParticipantI think the prevailing attitude is Yaakov Soneh Es Eisav. In all my years of employment I was never refered to as “The Jew”.
+1

OneOfManyParticipantHey, I didn’t start this. 😛
OneOfManyParticipantNo, because it rightfully reflects their incompetence. Why would you want the idiots running around spouting proper diction and locution? That would scare me…
OneOfManyParticipantMaybe you were on a Chrome high. I hear they make you jittery.
^_^
OneOfManyParticipantDepends how you define “hear.” 😛
OneOfManyParticipantSound is only defined as sound vis a vis the resonance of sound waves on your inner aural workings. So technically, the oscillations without the ear are not sound.
^_^
OneOfManyParticipantYeah…Ilustrator is the program for reflecting. Their reflecting tool is really good. Their manipulation tools are very comprehensive. My favorite is the Shear Tool – it’s great for creating shadows in perspective and stuff.
I’ve never used that tool – I don’t use very much more than the basic artistic filters. Will go and try it out.
OneOfManyParticipantNo, I meant the Eruv Rav.
OneOfManyParticipantlol is that what people really call them?
OneOfManyParticipantlol, Photoshop also has a brush like that – the Impressionist brush. Only Elements has it though…not sure why. I used to love playing with it, but I never really put it to practical use…apparently its purpose is to give photographs a more “painterly” feel.
OneOfManyParticipantOneOfManyParticipantBy the way, I finally decided to activate my Painter trial and play around with it last night…now I’m hooked! lol I spent the entire morning painting! It’s super cool! ^_^ ^_^ ^_^
OneOfManyParticipantOkay, none of you think it weird that the coffee room is now officially called “Moderator-80”?!
OneOfManyParticipant’80s
’90s
’00s
1980s
1990s
2000s
OneOfManyParticipantEveryone ought to ne respect each other’s rabbonim. Live and let live.
That’s a preeeeeeeeeeeeetty different tune than the one you usually sing…

OneOfManyParticipantBigGolem: That reasoning only will work if the people who are voting for Johnson prefer Romney over Obama. I for one do not.
OneOfManyParticipantwha
OneOfManyParticipantThe question was who did I want to win. I said neither. How does that mean I’m not voting?
OneOfManyParticipantneither
OneOfManyParticipantYeah, I was referring to that post.
OneOfManyParticipantoomis, very interesting (your first post on this thread).
OneOfManyParticipantTLKY: Okay, but the discussion of the relative merits and lack thereof of different Jewish communities is really irrelevant. The point is that the people the people who choose not live that way cannot feasibly adopt such a shidduch system.
OneOfManyParticipantNo comment on the story, but welcome back, arwsf! ^_^
OneOfManyParticipantJust looked him up…oooh, I like that “Living at Lake Quaig.” Very Burtonesque. ^_^
Also, I don’t know if you’ve already heard of it, but you should check out ConceptArt.org. I’ve only started being active there recently, but I’ve found it an amazing resource to help develop my skills.
I just checked and I realized that Photoshop calls it “Flip” instead of “Reflect”…you should see it there right at the bottom of the Transform menu. 🙂
OneOfManyParticipantHi! ^_^
OneOfManyParticipanttwisted, TLKY: The reason that system worked then is becuase it was naturally suited to the social/cultural dynamic of the times. You cannot argue that it be implemented now without arguing that that entire way of life be recreated. Case in point: the people who that system still does work for are the ones who have pretty much preserved that dynamic.
OneOfManyParticipantSyag: I get annoyed when people encourage girls’ going to shul over “wasting time at home.” If they are wasting time at home, then they should be encouraged not to waste time at home. I think that by telling them to go to shul, you further exacerbating this problem by encouraging them (though unintentionally) to see their going to shul of more value than their helping out at home. Which is I think a major impetus in their being confused and doing dumb things.
I am of course not saying this out of some warped desire to keep women shut up in their homes. I think it quite praiseworthy for a woman to go to shul, etc., but only if she can do it in conjunction with her other responsibilities.
OneOfManyParticipantej: Thanks, I just checked it out. 🙂
OneOfManyParticipantThat doesn’t make them feminists. That just makes them stupid.
Shkoyach for being maybe the first person on this site to make this very seminal distinction. -_-
QB has a point, though. You can’t call whatever we do that keeps us home “wasting time,” and also criticize those who would try to use their time “effectively.” You are right that what they did was dumb, but mixed messages are what make people do dumb things like these.
OneOfManyParticipantNo, that was just a noncommittal grunt.
OneOfManyParticipantSome of them were sleeping in because they were up until 2 A.M. making chlupshes and kreplach, ahem hem.
OneOfManyParticipantHey, I didn’t say it was a conspiracy between you and mod-80…more like one between mod-80 and Jxxeph, I would say..
OneOfManyParticipantYou two sound like a perfect shidduch… ^_^
OneOfManyParticipanthmmmmm
OneOfManyParticipantThey’ve just spun out of my head…but why do you assume? *raises eyebrow*
OneOfManyParticipantsnort @ both of you
OneOfManyParticipantBah, title pages and source pages don’t count. 😛
OneOfManyParticipantOnly works where you have le interwebz though. :/
