I want to clarify #16 – when you say it is one object, do you mean it is literally comprised of only one contiguous substance (like a one-piece wooden recorder), or do you just mean it has no loose pieces (i.e. not attached to the whole)?

popa’s link takes you to his “Lying on YWN” thread. You need to enter http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/profile/popa_bar_abba (which is, by the way, the same link for all user names (that haven’t been fiddled with), just with their extension at the end).

Kozov: We are not goyim, troll. Stop legitimizing reprehensible behavior.

Did you read the second half of that sentence? I’ll run it by you again: “…but it is clear from the rest of their interactions with others that it is in the context of civil exchange.” I don’t know about you, but in real life, I find that very many times people engage in humor that playfully pokes fun at someone, very often a sibling or a close friend. The point is that they are doing it in a context of mutual respect and acknowledgment, which makes such interactions agreeable to both parties. Obviously, if you do not have that context, then the jibe is nothing more than an insult. But if you are not comfortable with that type of humor, fine – just realize that it is a very common and legitimate way for people to interact.

besalel, Toi: The difference between trolls and posters who troll is that posters who troll are also capable of expressing themselves in a non-trolling and decent manner. They may occasionally engage in sarcasm at the expense of others, but it is clear from the rest of their interactions with others that it is in the context of civil exchange. Stam trolls don’t attempt to operate within this context (or break the unspoken rules that govern such interactions).

Virtual public forum, then. I don’t agree with the idea that anonymity equals no holds barred. There are still civil and uncivil ways of dealing with these things.

uneeq: If 99% of shmendrick’s approved posts are trolls, I don’t care if his total posts are approved 50% or 1% of the time. Just block him. And I thank the mods for finally doing that a few minutes ago. I personally would have done it a month ago.

True…I guess I just feel a little bad for the mods. Blocking a user is a tough call to make. You want your decision to be impartial, and it’s hard to do that when you are prejudiced against someone on basis of their opinions. To clarify: I don’t think people should be blocked just for having bizarre opinions – only if they are obviously using them to mess with people and/or using multiple screen names illegally to express them. And it’s hard to make that call when you already have that bias.

You should keep in mind that we have no idea what happens behind the scenes – we may only be seeing half of shmendrick’s posts (the others being deleted). The mods have said in the past that that was the case with some trolls that people complained about. I think sometimes we expect certain things from the mods, without taking into account the effort they are already putting in.

That being said, I do like the idea of there being a user-based method of flagging trolls. However, it should not be done on the public forum. We all know from experience that it can quickly spiral into some very unpleasant and messy witch-hunts. I think that it would be nice if there was some sort of line of communication straight to the mods dedicated to flagging troublesome users. However, I don’t know how difficult such a thing would be to execute, so I don’t know if it’s something we can expect.

Most fruit should be kept out of the refrigerator until ripe.

Keeping them in paper bags helps them reach optimal ripeness.

So the amount of numbers possible between 0 and 2 is infiter than the amount between 0 and 1?

    Exactly so.

The paradox itself is why your argument makes no sense.

It’s not my argument. And I don’t see how you can say it makes no sense when you don’t even know that. Why don’t you do a search for “set theory,” and see for yourself.

Additionally, I wasn’t defining paradox, I was stating a fact about this one.

Your associations with the concept show that you misunderstand its full meaning, which is affecting your perception of this particular case.

My issue generally (nothing to do with the bechira issue before), is that there was so much debate over what is infinite here, and how, and if, and what couldn’t possibly be, and it seems almost silly to me, because my human brain is incapable of getting past stage 1 of the conversation.

lol I really think you should read Notes from Underground.

A paradox is something that can’t rationally be explained (by mortals).

You can debate whether the thing you don’t understand includes xyz or not, but you can’t really be authoritative on it (without immortal sources).

What exactly are you trying to be authoritative about? I don’t really get what you or HaLeiVi are trying to address.

Also, your definition of the term paradox is not accurate (or at least irrelevant as it applies to this particular case).

Additionally, in what way can infinite be relative? Please give an example.

In its different applications. You are right the the absolute concept is absolute, but so is the absolute concept of bigness. Relativity can only exist in specific applications, of which there are plenty relating to infinity – that is what set theory is pretty much all about. One example – the cardinality of the set of integers (…-2, -1, 0, 1…) is infinite. However, the cardinality of the counting numbers (1, 2, 3…) is also infinite, although the set of counting numbers ostensibly contains fewer elements. (Yes, this is a paradox, but I don’t see how this makes a difference to any of the arguments that are being made here.)

frumnotyeshivish: Hmmmm…not really. Infinite can also be a relative term. And it can fit into finite spaces. How many numbers are there between zero and one?

But I don’t know who said anything about infinite neshamos and don’t really know what it means anyway, so I’m not necessarily trying to support that…
