May 18, 2011 3:01 am at 3:01 am in reply to: The Litmus Test of a good Principal- and preventing students from going OTD #767619OfcourseMember
mischiefmaker, People are opening schools left and right and are they qualified to be in chinuch?! NO!
I agree. Today many see opening a school as a good money making opportunity. The preoccupation is too often the school’s reputation and not the success or failure of individual students, emotionally and spiritually.
If more principals would think, act and speak like Rabbi Ehrenreich, amush, of BY of BP, I think we’d have less OTD kids and less kids and adults who are only outwardly frum, a phenomenon we have a lot of today, as written about in Jewish publications recently .
May 17, 2011 8:50 pm at 8:50 pm in reply to: Signs in BP regarding Tznius (Skirts that fall 4" below the knee). #767721OfcourseMemberPac, Ofcourse: Yes.
Im waiting patiently. Names of Flatbush Rabbonim who stipulate the 4″ below the knee rule as a must and not it’s better/best…., please.
May 17, 2011 5:02 pm at 5:02 pm in reply to: Pros and Cons of Home Depot kitchen- need kitchen advice. #792075OfcourseMemberLeah 222, im in BP. Thanks!
A relative just put in an expensive custom kitchen with a local frum company and had nightmares one after another. They were slightly less money than the other kitchen places, but they have horrible customer service. Other people agreed with her (too late now).
Who is reasonable and reliable?
Unless I hear the same name over and over, I wouldnt take the chance.
Pesachtime lots of people put in new kitchens and now theyre probably starting to get a feeling of whether they chose well, as far as customer service.
May 17, 2011 4:36 pm at 4:36 pm in reply to: Signs in BP regarding Tznius (Skirts that fall 4" below the knee). #767718OfcourseMemberPac, can you name which Flatbush Rabbonim (those who talk about 4″ or covering the knee when getting in and out of a car…)? I dont think they’d consider it Lashon Hara. Are any the Rabbonim whose names I mentioned?
Does the person (you quote by name) say if you dont wear the length described you’re oiver on a Lav or that it’s better if you do?
May 17, 2011 3:27 pm at 3:27 pm in reply to: Signs in BP regarding Tznius (Skirts that fall 4" below the knee). #767715OfcourseMemberPac, Im not denying anything you’ve said (skirts have to be 4″ lower than the knee to cover the knee when getting in and out of…).
Do Flatbush Rabbonim speak on the importance of this in Flatbush, and mention the above specifications? Flatbush isnt no-mans-land. Lots of Rabbonim and lots of Jews there. ; )
May 17, 2011 3:01 pm at 3:01 pm in reply to: Signs in BP regarding Tznius (Skirts that fall 4" below the knee). #767713OfcourseMemberPacman, I dont hear the specification of skirts being 4″ below the knee, coming from Rabbonim who have Shuls in Flatbush, somehow. Am I wrong?
Ok, the overnight Mod finished, submitted, davened, and now is going….
May 17, 2011 2:34 pm at 2:34 pm in reply to: Signs in BP regarding Tznius (Skirts that fall 4" below the knee). #767711OfcourseMemberThose who live in Flatbush- what do Rabbonim in Flatbush like R’ Moshe Tuvia Lieff R’ Reisman or R’ Goldwasser insist on, as far as length of skirts, for their congregants?
May 17, 2011 3:37 am at 3:37 am in reply to: Signs in BP regarding Tznius (Skirts that fall 4" below the knee). #767707OfcourseMemberbpt, Depending on the model, that might be the case!
Model meaning girl or car? Yeah guys ARE into Models. ; )

OfcourseMemberHas anyone ever tried these imitation Babe Ruth bars?
May 16, 2011 6:36 pm at 6:36 pm in reply to: The Litmus Test of a good Principal- and preventing students from going OTD #767607OfcourseMemberHealth, I don’t think that the orgs. that do Kiruv also do the OTD kids.
Its related. Children of previous generations’ OTD kids range from non-observant to less observant. Kiruv attends to those who are non-observant.
May 16, 2011 4:48 pm at 4:48 pm in reply to: The Litmus Test of a good Principal- and preventing students from going OTD #767605OfcourseMemberHealth, Real Justice will be in the next world!
How true!
But- theres always a but, ; ) -look at all the energy, time and money expended on Kiruv these days, b”H. I would say lots of that is to undo damage done not only by assimilation, but by incompetent and unsuited Mechanchim of past and present.
May 16, 2011 2:32 pm at 2:32 pm in reply to: The Litmus Test of a good Principal- and preventing students from going OTD #767603OfcourseMemberUnfortunately some Mechanchim are dangerously impulsive/explosive/hurtful.
May 16, 2011 5:16 am at 5:16 am in reply to: The Litmus Test of a good Principal- and preventing students from going OTD #767598OfcourseMemberDY, You want every principal to be a gadol hador.
No, not a Gadol Hador, just somewhat compassionate, and making use of the famous “Aizehu Chochom Haroeh es Hanolad” and leaving the child with a little less bitter memory of the event.
Training, training, training. Those who have a hard time communicating compassion at such a time, shouldnt be principals. Can we allow the resulting breakdown of frumkeit?
May 16, 2011 4:57 am at 4:57 am in reply to: The Litmus Test of a good Principal- and preventing students from going OTD #767595OfcourseMemberMDG, It sounds good in theory, but I think that it could be rather difficult in the real world.
Please explain what the principal, and anyone else, stands to gain by negativity such as name calling and belittling the student that he/she is throwing out, and might never see again for the rest of their lives. That is generally the last communication between the Hanhala and this child. One big permanent nightmare, thats all! I cant see Hashem wanting principals like that.
May 16, 2011 4:26 am at 4:26 am in reply to: The Litmus Test of a good Principal- and preventing students from going OTD #767593OfcourseMemberAny opinions?
OfcourseMemberDefinitely Milk Munch, but I havent seen them lately.
May 15, 2011 3:16 pm at 3:16 pm in reply to: Maccabeats hit "Candlelight" wasnt original music. Isnt it illegal? #766642OfcourseMemberDoes this mean that any Jewish singer can take any non-Jewish tune and sell albums with it, without having to worry about legal issues?
May 15, 2011 1:44 pm at 1:44 pm in reply to: Sheitels and cuts- quality and customer service #910756OfcourseMemberThanks, the more info I get, the better. Im looking for a new place to buy/cut. The last Sheitel bought I had problems with. Im looking to switch. I appreciate it.
Raizy Klein – (718) 232-1212 (I never heard of her, does she sell and cut?)
Pessy Mayerson (I heard of her, I think she sells and cuts)
Naomi (I used to use her, she’s very good)
Toby Poll – (718) 431-2443 (does she sell and cut?)
Perele Pretter – (718) 851-1310 (does she sell and cut?)
Leah Rosenbaum – (347) 788-1944 (does she sell and cut?)
Im considering trying Tori because I hear theyre no pressure, if you dont like it, you’re not obligated. Is that true about Tori? Is that true about anyone else?
Thanks again.
May 15, 2011 6:59 am at 6:59 am in reply to: Maccabeats hit "Candlelight" wasnt original music. Isnt it illegal? #766635OfcourseMemberWhat about performers like Lipa. Can they be sued?
May 15, 2011 5:35 am at 5:35 am in reply to: Maccabeats hit "Candlelight" wasnt original music. Isnt it illegal? #766632OfcourseMemberHow about if they dont give credit, like some Lipa music, which everyone recognizes from famous secular music?
May 15, 2011 4:48 am at 4:48 am in reply to: Maccabeats hit "Candlelight" wasnt original music. Isnt it illegal? #766629OfcourseMemberWhen musicians record other composers’ tunes, with very minor, hardly noticeable, changes, it’s legal? They cant be sued?
OfcourseMemberIf the school wants to create another OTD case, theyre doing the right thing.
OfcourseMemberItcheSrulik, I’m sorry but you’ve taken exactly the wrong lesson from this. Reb Shlomo’s lesson from this was to bring people closer to God. Yours was to go pray to men.
In both above cases, it was the Rebbe who cried to Hashem for the Chasid to succeed, not the Chossid crying to Hashem directly.
Am I missing something?
May 15, 2011 3:25 am at 3:25 am in reply to: Sheitels and cuts- quality and customer service #910751OfcourseMemberNo one buying Sheitels any more? Uh oh.
OfcourseMemberDo any Rebbes/Gedolim give out “Munkatcher Passports” these days?
If you had access to one, for what would you use it?
May 12, 2011 5:31 pm at 5:31 pm in reply to: Signs in BP regarding Tznius (Skirts that fall 4" below the knee). #767695OfcourseMemberI agree with most of the comments above, frummer is better, but I’m somewhat uncomfortable with hearing at some gatherings that women who wear skirts that dont reach 4″ below the knee are the cause of serious illnesses, tragedies and other catastrophes in the world.
OfcourseMemberLoehmanns, Daffy’s, Syms, Filene’s, online…..
May 11, 2011 9:10 pm at 9:10 pm in reply to: Signs in BP regarding Tznius (Skirts that fall 4" below the knee). #767677OfcourseMemberIt’s a neighborhood thing. You’ll have a hard time impressing on most people outside of BP, Willy, Monroe, Skver, Tosh and certain parts of Lakewood, Monsey and Yerushalayim, areas with a heavy concentration of Chassidish/Ultra Yeshivish Jews, the importance of 4″ for the times women get into and out of a car, etc, unless they’re looking to be role models, which is nice, but realistically not everyone’s level.
For generations, covering the kneee has been sufficient.
May 11, 2011 5:24 pm at 5:24 pm in reply to: Signs in BP regarding Tznius (Skirts that fall 4" below the knee). #767668OfcourseMemberCan someone explain why the 4″ rule gained importance in the last 10 years.
It was never mentioned in Bais Yaakov High School, for the first 40+ years of Bais Yaakov’s existence. Women got into and out of cars then too.
Have there been some new findings in Torah teachings since?
May 11, 2011 2:33 pm at 2:33 pm in reply to: Signs in BP regarding Tznius (Skirts that fall 4" below the knee). #767657OfcourseMemberposter, YES, when I passed that sign on 13th and 50th street, it hurt. The sign spoke to me. I felt guilty. It was a reminder.
Is the 4″ Halacha MiSinai? I think not. Do all Litvish Rabbonim believe women have to wear skirts that long? Or is it only preferable- Hidur Mitzvah? If it’s Hidur Mitzvah- there are many who dont believe in Human Hair Wigs, and there are many who believe that wigs should be covered….Ain L’Dovor Sof.
May 10, 2011 7:28 pm at 7:28 pm in reply to: Signs in BP regarding Tznius (Skirts that fall 4" below the knee). #767635OfcourseMemberIm in the middle of BP and I see loads of them. Does anyone living outside of the middle of BP see them too?
May 10, 2011 5:34 pm at 5:34 pm in reply to: Signs in BP regarding Tznius (Skirts that fall 4" below the knee). #767625OfcourseMemberursula, Presumably they have requested permission from the owners of the property to hang these signs.
Not quite. A crisp new one gets hung in front of my house, and other houses on my block 😉 as soon the old one falls off.
OfcourseMemberDY, yes and no. Sustainable, only as long as the Klal is willing to tolerate and SURVIVE the resulting stress and ill-health, decrease of Shalom Bayis and relationship with parents, etc.
OfcourseMemberum, I agree!
IMHO the support situation of recent years has caused more heartache to families than could ever be imagined, aggravating the Shidduch crisis as well. Poorer girls are devalued.
When Kollel life originated in America there were no demands from boys’ parents of minimal monthly figures. The couples managed on their own with much less needs. Kollel life was much more lishma. The current demand of support from the girls parents, wich became increasingly popular about 15 years ago, is a modernized version of Kollel life, bringing about stress and ill-health to many.
May 10, 2011 3:48 am at 3:48 am in reply to: House in Brooklyn was extended, how do I find out if it was done legally #765656OfcourseMemberSac, I checked. Theres nothing in the menu concerning DOB (Dept of Buildings) violations involving Alterations (ALT). Looks like I need an architect for getting the details on this Violation.
May 9, 2011 9:39 pm at 9:39 pm in reply to: House in Brooklyn was extended, how do I find out if it was done legally #765652OfcourseMembercommonsense, why are you bothering to look into it, if it had no effect on getting a mortgage?
Were the violations accumulated after you bought the house or before?
Which professional is able (and how) to get rid of violations? It must be some people$ career.
OfcourseMemberUsed to be Bobov. My mother used to say that they are the most peaceful and peace-loving of all the Chassidim. They never have Machlokes.
May 9, 2011 9:10 pm at 9:10 pm in reply to: House in Brooklyn was extended, how do I find out if it was done legally #765650OfcourseMemberSince Im related to the owners, what can be done in advance of selling?
May 9, 2011 6:54 pm at 6:54 pm in reply to: House in Brooklyn was extended, how do I find out if it was done legally #765648OfcourseMemberWalton, my question is, if theyre aware of a violation, why not go after the owner? Why wait til the house is sold?

Something about your tone sounds sarcastic. Are you a parent?
There are a million ways to show gratitude.
May 9, 2011 1:24 pm at 1:24 pm in reply to: House in Brooklyn was extended, how do I find out if it was done legally #765646OfcourseMemberSo the best person to contact here is an architect? In my case its a relatives house and they have to sell.
This violation thing is so strange. Why do they keep a record of it since 1986 and do nothing? Only when someone wants to get a mortgage there’s a problem? If the Dept of Buildings was aware of it in 1986 why didnt they do anything?
May 9, 2011 4:44 am at 4:44 am in reply to: House in Brooklyn was extended, how do I find out if it was done legally #765643OfcourseMemberyaakov doe, thanks a mil!!!
I looked it up and found an active violation dating back to 1986, Type: Alteration (2 of them, ALT….). Does this mean a buyer cant get a mortgage? Is there any way to get rid of violations? Do people undo additions? Is this house unsellable otherwise?
Someone said to have a new survey done. How would that change anything?
May 8, 2011 11:29 pm at 11:29 pm in reply to: Do You Show Gratitude To Your Parents? If Yes, How? How Often? #765372OfcourseMemberGoq, gee this seems awfully similar to a thread I started several hours before this one
