glad that others have brought this up.

yes it should be obvious, I have heard that people do it with out thinking. and some don’t want to hear it when you point it out to them!

play dough is basically flour water lots of salt and some color.

you can easily find a recipe to make your own.

it has so much salt as to make it unpleasant but not completely inedible. sell it with your other chometz.

    shticky guy:

How has it been changed into something else? I have always heard that play dough is to be considered chometz and needs to be sold or disposed of.

    “Nobody worships the cross”

how do you define worship? they don’t think of the cross itself as a deity, but as representing that deity. perhaps the word worship is not the right one. it is at least tachshite avoda zara or avak avodah zarah or whatever. how many crosses to you display in your home?

hard to believe that a family that has a minyan in their house

also hard to believe that they could have missed it. they live with it.

black box, is often used to mean a process or rule in which something goes in and something else pops out. we may or may not know why or how, we may not even be interested in why or how, and it may be impossible to determine why or how.

doesn’t quite fit the case of airplane black boxes, but I suspect that some derivative of this idea is where the term comes from.

    On reflection

I regret having joined this thread and wish I could delete my posts.

to clarify what I wrote about hydrogenated oils.

first of all, I realize that the distinction I tried to draw is a bit fuzzy. but it seems that hydrogenation is not like cooking but really converts the oil chemically to something very different, thought the difference was not at first apparant.

but no, I dont want to tell you if you should eat margarine or not. I dont even mind so much that the sell plain margerine for you to eat, though I hope you wont.

but I dont want them used as an ingredient, just as I dont want iron filings to be used as an ingredient.

I do think we need an FDA though we can argue about what the limits of their power should be.

There is a lot of value judgment here rather than provable points so I will leave this off here.

as to whether we should tax food additives, I vote absolutely not.

I dont think I have more to say in this thread

I am mostly against the government trying to control how much salt I eat or how much or what kind of fat.

    Same attitude about sugar.

but I would put hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated fats in a different category. The difference is not that these horrible things are more horrible than some others. It is that these are not really foods and it is fraudulent to claim they are.

the public mostly does not understand the distinction and some get riled up at the attempts to control it.

Can you remember all the hype about how good margerine made from corn oil is for you? The mistake, perhaps originally made honestly was that the margerine was the same as the oil. We now know better.

I think the freezer was instituted because the yeshiva felt that many students were just using BMG as a base for shiduch hunting,

without being really interested in the yeshiva itself.

while that still happened and happens, the freezer lessens that somewhat.

    Just my guess.

you were indeed fighting, your post was not a reasoned argument, just an attack. I certainly do expect people to disagree with my opinionsNas I acknowledged that coffee_addict did so. no problem.

The fact that you then say that I don’t, means once again, you took what you wanted and ignored the rest.

I do write tersely, (at least at the start) which when looked at later seems harsher than intended.

but you don’t seem to even comprehend what I was saying.

that would be fine too, if you didn’t then find far-fetched interpretations of my words.

I cannot even defend myself against your attack, since I can’t make any logical sense out of it.

because words and talk are very powerful things which have very powerful effects.

be careful what you say or write and try to consider the consequences.

perhaps the only effect of this one is that lurkers, who may think that the writers represent Orthodox Jewish thought, will conclude that Jewish ideas and philosophy are ridiculous. that is bad enough.

once again I would say this is too complex a topic to be more than glossed over here.

    but here a few comments.

    1) even midas harachamim has rules and dinim. It is not random or by whim.

    2) midas harachamim refers to during meah v’esrim. L’achar,

there are also some special allowances, but I don’t know if they come under the heading of midas harachamim.

    3) midas harachamim is aroused by t’filos, chesed and so on.

even here, there are rules and dimim.

    4) In general His judgements are beyond our understanding.

we can never know the whole story that lead to a schar or onesh and we cannot know the full value of either.

nobody mentioned that rav sheshes was a direct decendant of HAMAN

A child of an amaleki and a bas yisrael would be a yisroel. end of that discussion.

you are not allowed to injure yourself with a good reason.

ask a rav what a good reason is. this has little to do with suicide or murder.

an amaleki has no more right to kill himself thatn anyone else.

the issur of ‘lo tirtsach’ includes killing oneself. it is not a separate issur.

I didn’t mean that having a convention was merely a convenience, but that the particular conventions chosen were for convenience.

with a different set of rules, you would need far more symbols and annoying and confusing parentheses when writting formulas or equations.

these rules are convention, not a natural fact of numbers or arithmetic, as you yourself mention.
