cherrybim: You do realize you are not having a casual conversation about type 2 diabetes at your kitchen table with a friend right? You instead made sweeping statements from your personal experience with type 2 diabetes mixed with internet data on a thread about people with type 1 diabetes. And not only about type 1 diabetes- but an even more specified topic of type 1 diabetes and shidduchim.
Type 1 and 2 diabetes are COMPLETELY different. Young people in shidduchim have (in nearly all cases) type 1 diabetes.
I wish you success with handling your TYPE 2 diabetes.

Haha, oy back to that again.
I was simply saying that its going to be very hard/impossible to enforce. The biggest current issue of this age in my opinion is damaging others through social media. People have ended their own lives because of this.
However, I dont think the couple has the halachic or moral right to demand that guests dont take photos of other guests at the wedding. There is a grey area in secular law regarding who owns wedding photos when it comes to professionals, but at least in secular law a non-professional guest at a wedding would certainly own the photo he took and can share it since there is no right-to-privacy at a wedding. But its certainly wrong to share it if the couple requests not to.
June 17, 2015 2:51 am at 2:51 am in reply to: Pics of Simchas where family specifically request not to share on social media. #1087245newbeeMemberThe geni is already out of the bottle- you cant put it back in.
Perhaps you can confiscate each persons cell phone and camera when they walk in. And hire some sort of CIA-like service to spy out for hidden cameras. Have them sign a legal contract agreeing not to take photos- and hire a team of lawyers to prosecute anyone who does.
Might increase cost of wedding.
newbeeMemberyiddishemusic: Yea I particularly liked this pearl of wisdom:
cherrybim: “What is the point of letting you know the blood sugar, it’s too late by then.” and “The illness is the cause of severe depression and this escalates the diabetic’s condition.”
There is only one answer to the OPs question of this thread: you need to look into every individual on a case by case basis. Cant generalize or make assumptions when it comes to diabetes as every case is so different.
newbeeMembercatch yourself: by strike I mean an organized gathering of mutual protest- they never actually stopped working. So maybe strike is wrong term.
newbeeMemberOff topic, but I remember in my high school yeshiva all the rebbeyim had a strike to raise wages, and they were completely justified, but in my 15 year old mind it was devastating seeing rabbis ask for more money. I couldn’t view them the same after.

newbeeMember“It is precisely because of people like cherrybim that many people do not disclose their diabetes.”
The biggest problem is non-expert gossipers over-generalizing and fear-mongering. I know if I spoke to cherrybim about diabetes over a cup of coffee in my house, and the next day got a shidduch offer who was diabetic- I would turn it down, for no good reason. I tell her, dont read what people say online- only speak to your doctor and rabbi/rebetzin, because its only going to make you angry and scared. Yes, even siblings are effected. Much of this is used to increase funding I was told, but you see it has its downsides. My grandpa says diabetics have it so great today, but I guess he doesn’t understand the power of the internet.
newbeeMemberI think the bigger question is: why does cherrybim have a vendeta against diabetics and preventing them from dating? What benefit do you get from negligently downplaying technological advances?
“I’d love for anyone to correct me on the facts I’ve presented.”
I’d doubt that, but ok:
My sister replaces the device once every 7 days. It is 100% covered by insurance. It is not invasive at all- she does not even know its there. It is extremely accurate, and needs to be calibrated once every 12 hours. Which takes under a minuet to do. By next year or so, there will not even be a need to do that as the newer versions come out. It has been extremely beneficial, easy to use, and prevents high and low glucose levels. Companies are severely limited to what they are allowed to write by the FDA, but you never even heard of this device since 2 days ago, so you must know all the inside information about it. I am sure you know much more than she does.
newbeeMembercherrybim:
“What is the point of letting you know, it’s too late by then.”
You are not only ignorant, but seem to have a vendetta against diabetics. The device also give the constant direction the sugar is headed- so if a diabetics blood sugar is not high, but going in that direction, the user can correct the situation before it becomes high. And if it is already high or low, the user can promptly correct the sugar.
“A diabetic should be checking his blood on a regular basis anyway.”
You just contradicted yourself.
“And if it’s so great, why don’t all endocrinologists have their patients wear it.”
My sister has it. My grandpa has it. Both their doctors recommended it for them. I was told all doctors do. Maybe some people dont have it because of money- i would imagine its expensive with no insurance.
newbeeMembercherrybim:
Your ignorance of diabetes, technology, lumping all diabetics together, and type 1 and type 2 diabetes together, is quite troubling. I can only imagine the amount of emotional damage you have caused others. If you think are you are helping diabetics or their family member’s- you are not. You might not realize- this is not a thread about general diabetes. Its a thread about diabetes and shidduchim- which can effect many individual people.
The very fact that you never even mentioned the most basic thing- that diabetics, family members of diabetics, and all people, must be viewed individually with regards to shidduchim is a red flag to me.
I wanted to confirm everything before I posted this. A new device was recently introduced that constantly measures a diabetics blood sugar throughout the day and alarms if it ever goes to hi or low. I have seen it in action and was told this makes a qualitative difference. And there is also an artificial pancreas soon to come which will be utilizing this technology.
newbeeMembersam: ill look into 19a, thanks
Suicide from fear of torture and pain and the like certainly has sources. Regarding suicide to be mechaper, did you see see the shevus yaakov 2:111? I also recall the story of the roman who jumped into the fire and committed suicide who “earned his olam haba in one moment”.
DY- Basically, if self-inflicted suffering worked for the rishonim, kal vechomer negligent suffering can work for us- because it inherently can be mechaper. Not to say we should roll in the snow, but if we walked on the snow with shoes instead of boots, and ended up falling and rolling in the snow- that could be mechaper. Perhaps you must daven to Hashem for this- to have this count as a kapara.

June 11, 2015 6:00 pm at 6:00 pm in reply to: Getting Wealthy from Mechalel Shabbos- What Happens? #1087940newbeeMemberI agree with you to rent an RV and do nature walking is no issue at all as long as no issurim are involved- how can you be mekaved shabbos more than seeing the beauty of the world Hashem finished on yom hashishi.
newbeeMember“It calls unnecessary fasting a Chotei.”
I would hardly call fasting to be mechaper not necessary. Why would anyone fast if they thought it was not helping them? It must be how you define necessary.
What daf in nazir.
June 11, 2015 5:40 pm at 5:40 pm in reply to: Getting Wealthy from Mechalel Shabbos- What Happens? #1087939newbeeMemberThey were talking about leaving the RV parked over shabbos, and walking to flee markets and museums to look around. They thought it would be more fun/cheaper i guess than staying at a hotel and offer more options. In my opinion, the biggest threat to shabbos is zilzul shabbos.
Do you think its ok to tour around shopping malls and go to baseball museums and games on shabbos?
Why did the Rabbis assur riding a horse on shabbos? Its not because someone might break a twig, its mishum zilzul shabbos.

I already heard two people say they want to rent out an RV and tour around on shabbos. But even worse possibly, I hope this does not promote gambling in frum circles.
newbeeMemberI have two family members who are diabetic, my sister and my grandfather. My grandfather got diabetes in the old days when technology was really bad- and he B”H no serious problems. If no one would have married him, I would not be here right now. There is also supposedly a huge advance coming soon for type 1 diabetics she said so who knows.
newbeeMemberIt depends: If the person is keeping their blood sugars tight and has consistently good A1C’s (long term average levels) then basically no. If the person is keeping their sugars moderate it depends- some people’s genes will naturally prevent them from developing any issues- others wont. If the blood sugars are really hi over long periods of time- thats a serious cause for concern.
newbeeMemberIts irrational to say- “should I date this person or not because he or she is a diabetic.”.
Every person, diabetic or not, has to be viewed individually. Diabetes varies ENORMOUSLY between people. People tent not to differentiate though, and if they know of one person who suffers from complications from diabetes- thats all they will focus on.
“i love that you bumped this thread! I didn’t even realize how old this thread was until i read your post!”
To be honest I was kind of worried about bumping it. People are not going to be rational about this, and think all diabetics are the same, when every case can be totally different. People will just focus on the fear and not bother dating- when in reality it could have made a great shidduch.
Saying silly things like “The illness is the cause of severe depression and this escalates the diabetic’s condition.” like it applies to all diabetics (or any for that matter) is why I was afraid of bumping the thread- it might backfire.
June 10, 2015 11:22 am at 11:22 am in reply to: Are yissurim from negligence a kappara chet #1090736newbeeMember“And the Gemara does call one who fasts a Chotei.”
This is very vague and not sourced. The gem says you can be mechaper for a fast on shabbos by fasting on a weekday, so how can you say the gem says one who fasts is a chotei?
“We all know the source is fake.”
What source do you have for this?

Which is the highest form of tzedaka. Where is the issur hannah? Do you think the money that built the second bayis came from good places?
June 10, 2015 3:38 am at 3:38 am in reply to: Getting Wealthy from Mechalel Shabbos- What Happens? #1087920newbeeMemberWhen I started this thread I had absolutely no idea about any horse.
I heard about it recently when someone brought it up how it would be nice also to get a RV and camp out near places they would like to tour on shabbos.
Sticking to the topic though of what to do after one has accumulated all this ill-gotten wealth- what can he do to rectify it? I would imagine living lavishly off it would be out of the question.
newbeeMemberMy sister has joined the shidduch world as of last month and has been a type 1 diabetic since she was young- I have gotten to know as much as one can about it (I thought I might also get it- who knows). I think she is more worried about not finding a shidduch because of diabetes than the diabetes itself.
Some things to keep in mind:
1) Diabetes does NOT = serious medical issues. I know someone living with diabetes for over 50 years with no issues from diabetes. Negative effects of diabetes VASTLY differ from person to person for all sorts of reasons.
2) Genetics play a role- some people have diabetes and do not develop issues even if their blood sugars could be better because of good genes (though doctors still cant pin-point this gene, but all agree genes play a role).
3) Advances in technology have made taking care of diabetes much easier.
4) The publicity about diabetes and the complications that it causes are often exaggerated/misleading in order to increase funding.
I hope bumping this thread doesn’t hurt her shidduch chances, and it shouldn’t.
There you go!
June 9, 2015 9:34 pm at 9:34 pm in reply to: Getting Wealthy from Mechalel Shabbos- What Happens? #1087909newbeeMemberI think it would have been an even bigger kiddush Hashem if Hashem would have drowned all the horses- Jewish owned and not – in the long island sound: ?? ?? ??? ????. Gambling ruins lives. It nearly destroyed a relative of mine.
newbeeMembersam2: “And self-inflicted suffering isn’t Mechaper. It’s Mechayev. You don’t atone for Issurim by doing additional Issurim.”
And also, you never answered my question. How is self-inflicted suffering such as fasting an issur?
newbeeMember“We all know the source is fake.”
What source do you have for this?
newbeeMemberDY, I was referring to sam
newbeeMemberI was what?
Whats the issur of self-inflicted suffering such as fasting?
The real question is- can we ever really know when suffering comes about through negligence vs ohnes? I would say we cant. Life is too complicated.
Please post sources for anything you say. Thanks
newbeeMembersyag: no can ever blame anything on the rinbono shel olam has veshalom. Gd is perfect- tzur tamim.
The question is can your suffering for being ten min late and all the frustration that goes along with it be a kpara for a sin that you did and needed to atone for. And is this different if you 1) were “lazy” and left 10 min late 2) left 10 min late beyond your control (i.e. you child needed you) 3) you were intentionally 10 min in order to afflict yourself.
I think everyone is maskim when its an ohnes as in case #2 that it counts as kapara. The question is if 1 and 3 also count. For #1, “lazy” and “negligent” are very subjective- and we can never know when one truly exercises their bechira to be lazy- perkey avos aside.
newbeeMemberSam2: “There are many studies that show that workers work better with background music. “
Its so nice that you are able to distinguish between different types of work. This is misleading, there are also studies that show music is VERY detrimental to work then it requires concentration. So while it might help with pysicial work, it certainly does not help with work that requires concentration.
newbeeMemberSince its not so pashut that even suicide wont be a kapara for someone for a chet see (shevus yaakov 2:111) and is mutar for other fears as well (see ritva avoda zara 18a), perhaps negligence can also be a kappara. (Not that we paskin this way.)
Its a fine line saying that these yisurim come to be a kapara for someone for a chet they did, and these yisurim come to someone from negligence.
Negligence requires bechira, and very often bechira might not exists where we think it does.
newbeeMemberIts not so pashut that suicide cant be a kappara for chet, and suicide is the ultimate intentional harm. Not to say we paskin this way.
But I am mostly questioning that what we typically call negligence might not be so. If someone got addicted to smoking from a very young age and later died of lung cancer, I would say this is a kappara- not negligence. If someone was so busy or anxious they suddenly ran out of the house without a jacket- I would say this is a kappara- not negligence since it is very possible they had no bechira to do anything differently.
Are we saying if you run out of the house without a jacket without thinking about it for an emergency and get a cold- thats kapara. But if you ran out of the house without a jacket without thinking about it for a non-emergency- thats not a kapara and just negligence? Its a fine line to draw.
June 5, 2015 8:02 pm at 8:02 pm in reply to: The requirement for everyone to give Tochachah #1145269newbeeMemberI would personally be embarrassed if I was doing something publicly wrong in shule day after day, and would wish for someone to correct me or at least approach me and offer advise maybe I should do it differently (i.e. ask it to him as a question). Not to mention I also want to keep halacha, and assume other people who go to shule do as well.
newbeeMember“there is just no time for all the dilly dally in that goes on there.”
I know in the secular courts they never waist peoples time and there is no dilly dallying. Everything in secular courts gets done very speedy- probably everything is wrapped up within 1-4 days of the suspected crime or offence. I wish our minyanim were more like the courts so there was no dillydallying.

June 4, 2015 9:58 pm at 9:58 pm in reply to: Getting Wealthy from Mechalel Shabbos- What Happens? #1087872newbeeMemberI believe the second beis hamikdash was funded from ill-gotten funds. Probably- this is not a halachic issue (unless your talking about chanufa, what issue hannah is there?). Is it the right thing to do? I dont know. But its a different story for the person himself to live a life of comfort and ease off those funds.
June 4, 2015 8:15 pm at 8:15 pm in reply to: Getting Wealthy from Mechalel Shabbos- What Happens? #1087870newbeeMemberThere is a big difference between the person himself living a life of luxury from said money and a shule getting some benefit from said money in the form of tzedaka.
