Dear Pekak,
Haimy was not asking out of galus. He was asking to go to camp. We do not need power for that. Just a seat at the table. And he did not mean those camps.n0mesorahParticipantDear Common,
Until very recently, being pro gay rights was left-wing. Going back to nineties, it was hard left. Pro-abortion is still left. Personal life styles? Check. Also, the California liberal was practically invited to NYC by Rudy.n0mesorahParticipantDear Health,
You are correct in the context of Law Enforcement. If these were civilians, (One armed civilian gets into a struggle with an unarmed one…… The unarmed one grabs the taser and runs…) I think he would be guilty. It is my (meaningless, it is only me) take, that when bad policing happens, the officers should be tried as civilians. What gets magnified in this story is, that there is a constant reevaluating in policing to guess if a suspect is dangerous. There is no clear way out for the cops or the suspects. It forces the suspect to balance his freedoms and his life. And it forces the cops to balance being too safe now versus being too deadly later.n0mesorahParticipantDear Joseph,
The first time the taser was fired, (during the struggle) it was not at anyone. [And, how can you tell who fired it?] When The Officer finally used his gun, it was not self defense anymore.n0mesorahParticipantDear Shnitzel,
Joseph sees a connection. Neither reality could be possible from his point of view. If he blocks them out for the same reason, than that points to a connection.n0mesorahParticipantDear Health,
It seems to me that the Officer did get hit by the taser. Who cares that he is sleeping in the drive-thru? get him out of the way and move on. What investigation will you do? See if he is communicating with soviet spies? Two officers couldn’t cuff him after him being compliant. If one officer would have tried to immediately book him (For
what?) he would have gotten away for sure.n0mesorahParticipantDear NOYB,
Why did the officer create this self defense situation? This is not to say the suspect was one bit justified. The officer was stupid. What was he going to do when he ran after him? Knock him down? Ask him for the taser back? Offer him a ride home? If the officer could run a bit faster, he would have gotten tased in the face. He was not protecting himself at all. Finally, when the suspect is running away and no longer an immediate threat, he shoots him.n0mesorahParticipantDear Som,
What was the officer thinking by chasing him? If he was afraid for his own safety he should have used lethal force as soon as he lost the taser. If the suspect was not a danger, he should have let him run and radioed for a manhunt. If they chased him for assaulting them and disarming an officer, they did not have to kill him. (No idea what the law is in Georgia. Nor do I care.)n0mesorahParticipantDear Som,
“That’s not true…” I read up a bit. Blacks are over represented in police shootings relative to general population. Blacks are underrepresented in scenarios that include mental illness (by far the most defined category) and ‘suicide by cop’. (Second largest category. The majority are white, only four cases were blacks.) Blacks had the highest percentage of being unarmed. Source: National Library of Medicine PMID: 27745606If I read your point correctly, you mean that blacks being eight times more likely to be shot by police unarmed than a white person. Agreed. If you want to point to all cases, than it is twice as often that a white man is shot. But only twice as likely for a black man. Unless you were referring to homicides in the general population.
n0mesorahParticipantDear Common,
1. Rudy was much more on the social left than he is today. He was tough on law and order. Which is why we voted for him.
2. The ethnic cultures assimilate. Even their festivals and parades, become Americanized. If we want to have a more diverse religious bloc, we should turn to the new immigrant communities.
3. If we had not splintered our own bloc, we would have less trouble with the Anti Frum left. Since every splinter votes and lobbies individually, it takes a large effort just to get a consensus against a common adversary.
“there is no common ground anymore” Agreed.n0mesorahParticipantDear Doing,
He should have shot him in the leg instead of chasing him. There was plenty of time to take good aim.n0mesorahParticipantEven better question. If a mishkav zochornik would come to you to help him get a pair of tefillin, what would you do?
n0mesorahParticipantThis basic Torah Hashkafa is unknown to some because it does not exist, and is not referenced anywhere. Though, there is a major emphasis throughout all Torah sources on the greatness of the lone individual who dedicates himself to what s/he was created to be. Does anyone really think, that some homosexual, illiterate, self-absorbed punk is the next Avraham Avinu? Hashem put me in a world with people that are self serving deviants. My role is to not emulate them. Despising them, would put me more in their camp than with the Avos and Dovid Hamelech. If you spend your time, thinking about them you become them. Just ignore it. We have better things to do.
n0mesorahParticipantShooting him in the leg would have been enough.
n0mesorahParticipantDear Common,
I was wondering if the Zarda case would be discrimination according to the ruling. The customer was uncomfortable with the way he worked. If he was transgender, he could argue that a female would not be fired. Being gay does not seem to be a defense. He still has to be sensitive to the customers like any other male employee.n0mesorahParticipantDear Som,
It is definitely not the legislators job to guide the nations culture. It is the job of the clergy (Totally absent.) cultural icons (Make to much money.) and educators (HA!). But I do not get you. You want them to be able to act however they feel like and claim that is their ‘identity’? Why is it an affront to you if they do not get fired?n0mesorahParticipantWhy is it about worst case numbers? There was a chance to avoid the good bulk of it. The U. S. is the hardest hit country. With resources that are still being kept idle. There is no way to sugarcoat it. Huju wants to make light of it. But humor is insulting to some attempts to continue denying reality.
n0mesorahParticipantDear Someone,
The sin of Sodom was neglecting the poor. There is no reason for this ruling to scare anyone. All they are getting is the ability to keep a job. That does not make a difference to me and you. Of all the things that are failing in our community, this is what will bury American Orthodoxy??????n0mesorahParticipantWe would have more clout if more of us would vote. And vote with the bloc.
n0mesorahParticipantDear Health,
When this law is written, please make sure that it would not include giving tylenol to someone with a headache. I do not know what goes on in your house. But our communities would be drastically affected by your ideas. [Even more than abolishing all Police.]n0mesorahParticipantDear By,
“They at least had an excuse……” I disagree completely. Jew-hatred was part of Europe for hundreds of years. With major massacres in almost every generation. On top of that, Jews in many countries had lost their rights that we had worked for decades to achieve. Contrast that to today, where there has never been a massacre in the Western Hemisphere, and we have not lost any rights or even been singled out as a group. Americans are getting more agitated, they are just unsure of who they hate. There would have to be a very organized leadership, or anarchy to turn this into a genocide.
Just to correct a few things. Radical thinking is not entrenched any where in America (yet). We are too diverse and just do not care enough to be consistent enough to be radicalized. (This is mentioned in why the U. S. is host to many cults.) If those allegations mean Mr. Biden is not a good person, than what can you say for the President? I have no idea what you call freedom, and how it is being threatened. The Novi you mentioned is brought in the Midrash as Eliyahu. (As a bystander, not a prophet.) The Neviim would cring from your thinking. It relies too much on societal values.June 19, 2020 2:52 pm at 2:52 pm in reply to: The “New Normal” for Shul During the Yamim Noraim #1874513n0mesorahParticipantIt is worth repeating, that anyone with symptoms (Even the Rosh Yeshivah.) must daven at home for yomim noraim.
n0mesorahParticipantDear Health,
I was not comparing coranavirus to ebola. I was contrasting between the difference in approach. When the Feds take an all hands on deck approach to Global issues, it seems like they are making a big deal of nothing. But, there is a long list of successes of catastrophes that have been (largely) averted. Compare that with the present, where those in national positions spent three months in denial, two months talking stupidly, and are now projecting it to be almost over. I am not against the politics of it. I am pointing out that you are giving credit to an administration that has made it very clear that it is not their problem to solve.n0mesorahParticipantDear Joseph,
I apologize. I was focusing on the second point, and did not think how to write out the first one. The First Amendment is aimed against forcing any set of beliefs on the people. It enables any religious expression people choose, but it does not enshrine that people will have religious worship. It does preclude any curtailing of free speech.
That was what I meant. But know I think it could be read as all having to do with the right to assemble. Meaning, that religion is being enshrined through the masses right to assemble. (And the right to religious freedom is to be read implicitly into the constitution itself.) Accordingly, the double standard is obvious. [Just according to this interpretation, i am unsure why the Government is allowed to order a lockdown to begin with.]
In conclusion I think I made it clear that I do not know much about how this works out in everyday legislation and government. Since this thread is all over the place, maybe someone can clear it up for me. But I still think that the Governors were thinking along the first reading when managing two different public crises. Which lead into my second point; But the idea here was that religious people would be careful about social distancing, because they tend to be more conscious of the communal good. [As opposed to their own personal right.]June 19, 2020 2:49 pm at 2:49 pm in reply to: Outdoor Dining Proscrpition in Halacha – Phase 2 Reopening #1874499n0mesorahParticipantDogmatic fundamentalism is not evident in Jewish classical literature.
n0mesorahParticipantDear Health,
If you were around in the sixties, you may not be aware that encyclopedias are available online. From Wikipedia (Kent State shootings):
The fatal shootings triggered immediate and massive outrage on campuses around the country. More than 4 million students participated in organized walk-outs at hundreds of universities, colleges and high schools, the largest such strike in the history of the United States. The student strike of 1970 further affected public opinion at an already socially contentious time over the role of the United States in the Vietnam War.
But if you were around in the sixties, you should have known this.n0mesorahParticipantDear Health,
“college or university” If you say so, I would not make such assumptions.
Back to the the sanctity of other people’s property. It does not matter to me the term. Are you so anti ethics, that all those grievances can be dismissed because there is no obvious criminality?n0mesorahParticipantThe President himself supplied our answer! “Do you think I’m stupid?” Trump, on avoiding the Vietnam Draft.
n0mesorahParticipantDear Joseph,
The First Amendment does not exactly cover services. But the idea here was that religious people would be careful about social distancing, because they tend to be more contentious of the communal good. [As opposed to their own personal right.] I imagine this could make things even more difficult for religious lobbies behind closed doors.n0mesorahParticipantDear Health,
The Obama administration had H1N1 in 2009, Ebola in 2014, and Zika in 2016. They more or less did the job. The feds today, have completely backed away from this pandemic and told the States to deal with it. Nobody saw the U. S. getting hit so hard. This thread started about The President ignoring the reality on the ground. If you want to transfer power back to the States, then keep on supporting Trump. There is no reason to lie about the pandemic. This is clearly not something he ever intended to deal with.n0mesorahParticipantDear Nerli,
What Jews did the president stand up for? Which Jewish interests has he protected?n0mesorahParticipantDear Just,
If everyone wears a mask, than everyone will wear a mask. Once some people stop…n0mesorahParticipantOn the Torah part, if anybody cares. Who comes first, says nothing about the respect that is due every person. Am I allowed to dehumanize the Levi, to save a Kohen? Can you really read parshas noach with or without any commentary, and miss that every human life is regarded? Have you not seen that the three cardinal sins are laid out around human dignity, and together with the mitzvah of preserving life? Did you skip the Neviim, that equates the Yidden with the other nations in the eyes of Hashem? How much of Tehillem discusses the equality of men, and the loftiness of the human spirit?
One can look around at society today, and justly condemn this individual or that group. But if he goes to the Torah, and could not find enough self-criticism to point only at himself, than he misses the whole point.n0mesorahParticipantDear Alteh,
The Rosh Yeshivos do not go these parks, so they do not see it and tell us to keep them clean. Similarly, we are told to put away the seforim in the Bais Medrash, but we do not put away the milk in the dining room. We are told about the music by weddings, and not to dance like fools. But we are not told to behave by funerals, even after people are seriously injured.n0mesorahParticipantDear Haimy,
Not sure if I practice the religion you practice. Pretty sure you are incorrect about freedom of religion. You are correct about Satmar.n0mesorahParticipantDear Shnitzel,
How would the right wing commentators, know what the left wing is attempting? Do you feel like the left wing commentators give an accurate portrayal of what the right wing is about?n0mesorahParticipantDear Joseph,
What is Jewish Culture? I always thought, that we absorbed Gentile culture through our more assimilated and lax brethren. If the mother is raising the children and looking after the house, and that is the way it is in every jewish house, what kind of Culture can there be?n0mesorahParticipantDear Someone,
You could use some American History of the Twentieth Century. But you would say it was written by liberals…n0mesorahParticipantDear BY,
Is this Holocaust denial? “Surely European Jews were saying the same thing in 1935. They at least had an excuse cuz nothing of the sort had ever happened before.” Jews had just started getting rights not even a hundred years before this. By 1935, they had already lost them in many countries. And, they had not forgotten that things could go bad quickly…..
Cultural rot is a problem. However, it is not genocide.n0mesorahParticipantNot really sure what everyone is talking about. This reading of the law forces people to act normally. Do not discriminate against your employee for things that do not affect your business. And your employee has to act normal, because anything that either gender could be fired for, he/she/it can be fired for too. CJ Roberts is setting up a legal basis for people to be obligated to a human standard, no matter how they self identify.
n0mesorahParticipantDear Health,
“They brought in the National Guard” And shot four students protesting in Kent State. Which led to more protests, and really boosted the anti-war movement. Which toppled JE Hoover, director of the FBI. Then the real madness slowed down. But the FBI (and the riots) could be slowed down still more…..n0mesorahParticipantDear Akuperma,
“the last city to be destroyed in any sort of warfare was Hiroshima” Vukovar? Aleppo??
n0mesorahParticipantDear Som,
“IN FACT study’s that show that an unarmed white man is twice as likely to be shot then an unarmed black man”
Mathematical correction. Twice as often. Given that white population is over four times the black population, a black man is 8 times more likely to be shot by police than a white man. [I used google to find your ‘study’. It says twice as many.] The same mathematical error appears in the first point you made. That point is still valid, if overstated.n0mesorahParticipantDear Health,
Trump had to pay out two million for improper management of his non-profit. There are about 30 investigations surrounding his assets today. He has faced nearly 4000 lawsuits. What is your point?n0mesorahParticipantDear Grand,
What is your issue with ANTIFA, you miss the concerts?n0mesorahParticipantDear Abba,
I do not live in NYS anymore. I was not referring to NYS or any specific state. If we must listen to the Police even when they are taking advantage of us, that boils down to now constitutional rights.
It is a sketchy story. I was not there. You say what the civilian should have done. The civilian is not getting paid to do a job, and has no way to be trained how to deal with an obnoxious cop. It is too much to ask, for every Police Officer (especially on the beat) to be properly trained?
I can’t get the Floyd story straight. Was he in the car at one point? Partly in the car? Not sure why it matters. If you cannot control an intoxicated individual without killing him, you are awful at policing.n0mesorahParticipantDear Health,
Who is the drug pusher today? The maker of oxicontyn? The kid down the block who bought a bit extra so he could sell to his neighbor? What would the Death Penalty for Drug Pushers Law look like?n0mesorahParticipantDear Common,
I am very thankful that I am no longer in yeshiva. I still have no need for a career, but thank you for the tip. The math is correct. Unless NYC means only BP. You seem to be petrified by the fact that coronavirus has not been eliminated yet.n0mesorahParticipantDear Common,
That is good news. It still correlates to 75,000 more infected people than a year ago.June 12, 2020 11:52 am at 11:52 am in reply to: Are Law abiding minorities affected by police racism? #1871107n0mesorahParticipantA lot of people have high horses.
If we boil urban crises down to yes or no questions we can always blame the poor. So, in that spirit, I have a yes or no question, myself? If society has reached a point that it can absolve it’s responsibility because there are others to blame, is there any reason to retain TaNaCH? -
