    Dear Simcha,

It is unbelievable that we as a nation are still grappling with this. However, let’s ignore the larger discussion and focus on the fatal error of your original post.

“It excludes those who weaponize Halacha to hurt others. It excludes those who willfully break the law or knowingly participate in or support fraudulent practices.”

What is the nature of this exclusion? Where in Torah does an error make one excluded? How do we fault people who clearly do not see the religious value of religion itself? How do you differentiate between willful and unwitting infractions Can the most strict adherents of Ethical Orthodoxy be confident to not transgress their own commitments? Can anyone determine who is being ethical? Isn’t it a purely mental exercise? Wouldn’t we just end up with the same game of calling everyone an ethical fraud or non-orthodox?

This has been rehashed for decades and there is nothing new here. the value of a strong ethical philosophy is purely the realm of the individual. With little impact and no significant affect on community life. It is none of my business if people live up to their ethics or not. But it is very meaningful to the practitioner. This is abstract thought. It has nothing to do with religion.

Religion is collective thought. That thought gives it no legitimacy. It could only be useful if it is believed to be Divine. It takes it’s legitimacy from it’s own context. It can never think itself into a non-existing situation. Therefore it always entertains those with serious moral failings. It allows those failings to modify the system. Some people see this as a major threat to authenticity. But it has no strength against true religion. Because true religion is convinced that it cannot be permanently vanquished Do you feel so strongly about Ethics?

It would be constructive if we do an actual count before making such far-reaching conclusions. Of course that would only be if we are interested in the truth.

    Dear Always,

You presume that. The gemara does not.

She could be married. Anyone at any age could be married.

The question was when should a girl be married.

Which in of itself is based on an assumption that marriage is a matter of age.

    Dear Ujm,

None of these issues divide the Orthodox from Conservative. They are both divided from within on these topics. Of course the proportion is in the inverse. Which makes it even less of a real schism.

    Dear Anonymous,

I don’t know if Rav Moshe did or didn’t. I’ve asked Rabbanim who should know and did not get a clear answer. He writes in one teshuva that we can assume a Coservative Rabbi is passul leydus even if he is known to be observant. This doesn’t mean that the Rabbi is automatically to equated with his Flock. By the way, I am not assuming that Rav Moshe agreed with those that held Conservative Pulpits.

Package dental with other coverage that you don’t use. Such as eyecare. It should get you a bigger allowance.

    Dear Ujm,

The difference is that it negotiable. It’s not something that is intrinsically intolerable to the Arabs. The British were allowed all kinds of access until the Arabs realized that it meant something to them. It’s extortion. The same extortion that governs all Arab countries. It’s part of their value system. As alluded to in the Koran.

    Dear Halevi,

You would have to clarify why this pertains in the current day and the current situation. I know from one gaon who was involved in this issue that it is much more complex than people realize. But that’s not my point.

My thinking is, that anyone who wants to go for political/societal reasons thinks it’s permitted. And those who assume it is forbidden by halacha, would not be going there anyways. So it’s purely a political debate. Not an halachic one. So let’s be honest about that.

Of course we assume that the world tour isn’t bittul torah. So then marriage would be permitted if he has enough to provide for his wife until he returns. If he doesn’t he’ll marry upon his return. Whatever age that may be.

The Rambam says someone who will have to interrupt his learning may delay marriage. Presumably, that means indefinitely.

    Dear Akuperma,

Anyone and everyone was allowed to enter the Beis Hamikdash. Even just to see it. There is no obligation to only come with a korban besides for a regel. The Beis Hamikdash was not some private social club masquerading as a shul, that your only tolerated if we approve of how you daven.
