Dr. Robert Mendelson explains Milah vs. secular circumcision nicely in one of his books . He says we give the baby some wine as anesthesia and a minyan is necessary to make sure the mohel does his work properly. Also, we do it on the eighth day, when the platelet count is highest (IIRC), so the blood clots immediately. They might appreciate such tidbits.
msseekerMemberI think people who are abusive (such as suffering from Borderline Personality disorder) shouldn’t consider marriage until they get proper help and change.
June 6, 2011 8:43 pm at 8:43 pm in reply to: Cultural differences – sepharadim vs ashkenazim #793728msseekerMemberThanks, essy8, for your touching story. You are open-minded and have your priorities right and your kids will only benefit from your attitude.
msseekerMemberAnd the winner is… Obama! (Entered by AYC)
(The loser is America.)
msseekerMemberGet a good night’s sleep and go to shul for shacharis with a clear head. If you can get to a Satmar shul, there’s a special avodah by Ahava Rabah, with a beautiful, uplifting niggun.
msseekerMemberIf you think that’s bad, imagine if there’s a divorce ch”v and the benchers are lying around all over. A real converation starter… Anyway, who says a wedding requires a souvenir? Continued shalom bayis and simchos are the most beautiful and meaningful souvenirs.
msseekerMemberDear Religious Zionists:
We are all sick and tired of arguing with you, as you can see in the last few threads about Zionism. If you are seriously looking for answers, kindly search TrueTorahJews.com.
Sincerely,
Your Anti-Zionist and Non-Zionist fellow CRers
msseekerMemberAh. Beautiful name, TH, though not one I’d suggest you take IRL upon your gerus.
msseekerMemberAPY, what a beautiful story. We should all be prepared for that, but use it only if the missionary is Jewish, open-minded and humble, like your “salesman”.
msseekerMember“Use your creative minds not to develop dialogue but to develop excuses or even LIES (if needed) to get you out of the situation, such as by saying, “I’m so sorry but I can’t stop now because my house is on fire”, and run away.”
Or, “I’m so sorry but I communicate only with dolphins, no missionaries”
msseekerMemberThanks, Ash. ??? ??? ??????.
msseekerMemberHomeowner:
Today’s silent letters (in English as in French) were pronounced in the older versions of the language. Hence we find French place names in our old sefarim the way they’re spelled, not pronounced today, like ???????? (Montpelier, pronounced “monplay”)or ????? (Troyes, pronounced “troy”). Another interesting example: In Yiddish, a Frenchman is a ????????, exactly like the spelling of popular French name Francois (pronounced today Fransua), which means Frenchman. Chalant is an Old French word meaning “to warm up”. The ETYMOLOGY is Chauld-Lent, i.e. “heat up slowly”. This is also the ancestor of Nonchalant – “not warm”.
msseekerMember“I won’t let anyone get between me and G-d.”

msseekerMemberWow, thanks Tikkun. BTW, why did you choose this SN?
msseekerMemberWhere was Dr. Shulman’s article?
msseekerMemberPac Man, why do you ask?
msseekerMemberAny Jewish kid going OTD is OUR tzarah, not just “theirs”. We cry with them and for them, and we laugh with them at the tzarah, not at them.
msseekerMemberJudging by my SN, I’d either find the Truth or go out of my mind seeking it (ch”v). I never take it for granted that I was born into a frum family. On Shavuos I’m almost ecstatic with joy and gratefulness to Hashem. This is all the more reason to appreciate BTs and gerim who sacrificed so much to be where I am.
Tikun, Ash, your stories are FASCINATING. You should write books. Can you tell us more? How did your families react? Ash, how do you feel as a black Jew? Are you well accepted? Tikun, Baruch Habah to Klal Yisrael. May your conversion go smoothly.
BSD, we FFBs have our share of nisyonos, doubts, and decisions to make. Suffering from an abusive, frum parent, I seriously doubted the truth of Torah. If not for my other parent, who knows where I’d end up… But I searched for the truth and I found it B”H, mainly through books by R’ Avigdor Miller, Uri Zohar, Akiva Tatz, etc. So yes, we can, on our own level, make a conscious decision of Naaseh Venishma.
msseekerMemberAries, chill out. Laughing at our tzuris is a famous Jewish trait that has kept us going thru 2000 years of golus.

Wolf, judging by your comment, I’m not sure the translation is accurate. Also, ????? ????? ??? does not mean ?????. It means a normal, rational person who somehow gets completely twisted about a particular thing.
Anyway, enough for me. Our differences in hashkafa are too deep and too wide for bridges of understanding. We should never be rude, though, and for that I apologize again.

May 11, 2011 1:20 am at 1:20 am in reply to: Firestorm After Der Zeitung Deletes Hillary Clinton from Iconic Photo #1052691msseekerMembercommonsense, where did I ask why we should care?
msseekerMember“sadly, the fact that parents in Satmar can dress however they wish, but the kids have to abide by exreme rules, is the reason why they have so many teenagers going off the Derech there.”
Huh? More than other groups (percentage-wise)?
msseekerMemberbpt: I’m msseeker’s daughter. I was personally offended when you accused my mother of lying. FYI, “msseeker” is truly seeking the emes. One of my friends’ mother wears red nail polish, sleeves that barely covers her elbows, yet her daughter is a true satmar talmidah. And I’m proud to say, she is one of the frummest in our class! You can choose to believe this or not, but like my mother, I too seek the emes.
It really amused me that you think Kiryas Yoel is so open minded. I wouldn’t live there if my life depended on it. Talk about sheltered.
I personally didn’t witness the graduation, but my mother did. She was a young sheltered girl then and thought it hilarious when the girl’s male relatives kissed her.
My mother told me her name, which I can’t exactly post here, but you can verify the truth if you can get hold of anyone who graduated there in 1984.
I appreciate your appreciation of our chessed. Just think, if you would tell MO about the chessed Satmar does, they too would think you were joking.

Except if he is frum. That’s when all common sense, open-mindedness, ???? ?????, ????? ????, ????? ????? etc. etc. go out the window.
msseekerMemberYou’re arguing with facts. My kids in Satmar have classmates whose parents are litvish-type, BT, gerim, sefardi, teimoni… Fathers w/o shtreimels, mothers with red nail-polish… As long as the kids conform to the dress code and the parents are ehrliche yidden, nobody makes a fuss. In Bais Rochel, KJ, there was a girl from Monroe township, quite modern family but they probably prefered Satmar to public school. She learned Yiddish and was very well accepted. Her father and brothers/uncles, all clean-shaven, were even allowed to attend her graduation. And KJ is Satmar in its most narrow-minded, extreme form!
msseekerMemberFeif Un: I’m tired of regurgitating the arguments. Please look for the older threads, or see TrueTorahJews.com for clear answers.
msseekerMemberNo, I don’t mean the silly tunas. I mean the oiberlender types. Trying to register in yeshiva a kid with a chup? Forget it takke. But if totty originally wears a bend-down and business suit, not b/c of shkutzerei, I don’t think there’d be a probem. That’s why I said “wife and *kids* only”.

Except they cut off women’s heads literally.
msseekerMember“But if I wanted to join full time, they would expect me (and rightfully so) to dress the part. Wife and kids too.”
Correction: Wife and kids only. Satmar never stressed levush for men. There are Satmar chassidim with felt hats, beaver hats, tall hats, wide brims; long frocks, 3/4 length, short jackets; full beards, trimmed beards, even no beards; shtreimels, no shtreimels, etc. Satmar only stresses yiras shomayim, limud hatorah, tznius, shmiras einayim, chessed, tzedaka, emunah and anti-Zionism.
A Mizrachist who was “converted” to Satmar rov’s shita on Zionism thanks to the sefer Likutei V’Yoel Moshe, asked the distributor of the sefer what he has to do to become Satmar. His reply was: “Nothing. Just be an ehrlicher yid.”

Wrong. From the new YW article:
“As published by YWN earlier today, the articles spread from the Jerusalem Post to the NY Post, to a being a lead story on Fox News, TIME, Washington Post, Yahoo News, NY Daily News, CNN, Huffington Post and dozens and dozens of other news outlets.”

Who cares? All their readers know that women are cut out from photos and appreciate it. This is one of the reasons why we buy frum newspapers.
May 9, 2011 8:11 pm at 8:11 pm in reply to: Firestorm After Der Zeitung Deletes Hillary Clinton from Iconic Photo #1052586msseekerMemberzahavasdad, I agree, but it might have been a mistake, especially since their English isn’t the greatest. We should be ?? ??? ???? frum Jews too, not only reshaim.
“how did the media find out about this all together?”
?????? ???????? ??? ????. They got it from a moser in JPost who probably reads ?? ??????? every week in order to find shmutz on frum Jews.
msseekerMemberHeimish, beheimish. I knew all along you’re all Hungarian.
msseekerMemberI don’t listen to radio at all; I read his transcripts.
msseekerMemberDY, Rush’s (tongue-in-cheek?) show today was basically the nimshal to my jokes. Obama deserves tremendous appreciation and endless admiration for… allowing Gitmo to remain open and the CIA and SEALS to do their jobs. (APPLAUSE)
msseekerMemberDY, OK here’s another joke: After a shidduch is made, Plony comes to one of the mechutanim asking for shadchanus gelt. “You?” the mechutan says, “I don’t owe you a cent, you didn’t say a single word!”
“That’s right,” says Plony, “Had I said a single word, the shidduch would never happen!”
msseekerMemberObama fans, ever heard this one before? A family moved from NY to Jerusalem and someone asked their little boy whether he likes it better there. “Oh, much better,” he said. “We’ve lived in the US for 12 years and we never had a Bar Mitzvah. Now we’ve lived here for just a few months and poof! my brother gets Bar Mitzvah!”
msseekerMemberI think what O is trying to explain is: stick to the issue and don’t come with anecdotal evidence that has no shaychus to the disscussion. This is a given on any thread but somehow, when the discussion is about levush, people start arguing about OTHER THINGS those wearing the levush are doing. That was not the question! When we discuss shmiras halashon or health issues or whatever and a poster will state, “Well I know many people who are careful about lashon hara but do many other aveiros” or “I know someone with epilepsy who has a very healthy liver”, he’d be ignored, or laughed out of the CR. How is it different when the OP is trying to determine what a black hat stands for, or the difference between a woollen talis koton or a cotton one, or the permissibility of shaitels, and posters regale us with anecdotes of black hatters or chassidim who fail in COMPLETELY DIFFERENT aspects of yiddishkeit?
msseekerMemberbygirl93 – Great idea. It’s called ????? ????? ?? ?????. The only problem is other posters making fun of us frummies, and ????? ??? ???? ??? ??????. Now if we can rally together and ignore them, or better yet cry foul every time a ?? displays his corny ignorance that’s supposed to be funny, we can clean up this otherwise wonderful place. The shulchan aruch instructs us: ??? ???? ???? ???????? – do not be embarrased of those who ridicule.
msseekerMemberJust Hovering, you sound like a wonderful person. You’re trying to do the right thing, but you really need to know more. Why don’t you do some more research on Orthodox Judaism (Aish.com may be very helpful) or speak to an Orthodox rabbi. Lots of luck, G-d bless you.
