Mother in IsraelMember
I don’t think men should be reading this thread.
Mother in IsraelMember“The better question is why do I sometimes see otherwise frum men without peyos? “
Because they went to the same barber as Feter Shmelka?
Mother in IsraelMemberSakin and sakanah.

Mother in IsraelMemberwhat does Shabbos have to do with this thread?
Mother in IsraelMemberA girl in my class got one. I don’t know if it’s okay halachically or not, but at that point, she was frum and she did it. (She later went OTD.) I would think that if you’re seriously considering it and are concerned about the halachic implications, you should ask your own shaila.
Mother in IsraelMemberI think society plays a very big part in this. Where I grew up, pretty much all women and girls wore denim skirts. It wasn’t even an issue. After I got married, I moved to an out-of-town kollel community in EY where it’s very rare to see denim skirts. It took me very little time to realize that I stood out in my denim skirts, so I stopped wearing them. It’s been a good 13 years or so since I last wore denim.
Mother in IsraelMemberBackgammon. It’s the only board game I play.
Mother in IsraelMemberYes, but it’s 2:37 a.m. and I’m heading to bed. Remind me in the morning to post it.
Mother in IsraelMemberWolf, he was accepted for next zman, not this one.
Mother in IsraelMemberStartling.
Mother in IsraelMemberDr. Pepper–It’s not my son. I was just a guest at the bris.
Adorable–I am serious, but apparently there were other reasons for the name as well.
Mother in IsraelMemberI went to a bris today and the baby was named Pesach. 🙂
Mother in IsraelMemberA sign in Yerushalayim pointing to a ramp for the handicapped reads ???? ?????. Underneath that is the translation “Beyond Disabled”.
Mother in IsraelMemberTorino and Rosemarie, milchig only. Yum.
Mother in IsraelMemberHere’s one that happened to 2 friends of mine in seminary. It was the last day of Pesach when Israelis were already back to their chometz. These girls were staying at an Israeli family, so they were the only ones who still had yom tov. The family had to go out, so the girls were left to eat their seuda alone. They opened the fridge and discovered that the light had been turned on so they couldn’t close the door. They decided to knock on a neighbor’s door and ask for help. When the neighbor opened the door, they said, “Pasachnu es hamekarer v’or ba, v’anu ma’america.” Took a while for the neighbor to figure out what they wanted.
Mother in IsraelMemberWe go to bonfires at night. We don’t do much during the day other than play music, get haircuts (the menfolk), and relax.
Mother in IsraelMemberIn EY, the seuda after a bris is almost always fleishig, even if it’s served at 8 am.
Mother in IsraelMemberHIE, if you would slow down just a little bit so that your spelling and grammar were correct, we would all have an easier time reading what you have to say. Your writing really does leave much to be desired. It doesn’t take that long to put in apostrophes, differentiate between “then” and “than”, and spell “they’re” correctly instead of writing “their”. And those are just a few examples.
Mother in IsraelMemberI was trained many years ago, so this may not be current, but I was taught that you don’t give compressions until you check for a pulse. If a patient is unresponsive and not breathing but has a pulse, he needs mouth to mouth, not compressions.
Mother in IsraelMember2 twin beds. We wouldn’t have room for anything bigger than that.
Mother in IsraelMemberI think it’s neither of the above. I think that faith is knowing that G-d can and believing that even if He doesn’t, that also comes from Him. G-d knows what’s best and we don’t, and believing that things will always work out the way we think they should is not faith.

Mother in IsraelMemberHealth, a few people asked about you. See this thread:

Mother in IsraelMemberMaybe the mods can email him and tell him his account is no longer inactive?
Mother in IsraelMemberK9 is good, but plenty of bad things are accessible when it’s in the default mode. I’m constantly adding things to my “always block” list.
Mother in IsraelMemberI don’t have the Braun, but I’ve also heard it’s the best food processor.
Mother in IsraelMemberDo you mean growth hormones? They have some undesirable side effects, so doctors don’t give them without a complete workup first to check bone age and other factors.
Mother in IsraelMemberI once saved someone’s life with CPR and would do it again if necessary. I found that in the heat of the moment, I didn’t think twice about it. The person went on to live another 6.5 years after that.
Mother in IsraelMemberHe’s probably allergic to something that blooms at this time of year. My kids take antihistamines during their bad seasons. They really don’t do well without them.
Mother in IsraelMemberGoq, thanks, but I think I’ll pass. Enjoy it though–if you get your mustard, that is.
Mother in IsraelMemberMaybe the Rav felt they could have done something differently? In my case, I told him everything I went through to try to light–running down from the umpteenth floor (Friday was YT so no elevator), crossing the street to another building, climbing up another few flights to get to the room where I was told to light and finding it locked, running all over looking for a key, trying to find someone to borrow candles from, etc. etc. After he listened to my whole story, he said that my not lighting was not due to negligence so I did not have to add on another candle. I’m not c”v saying that your parents were negligent, but maybe the rav thought they should have done something differently.
Mother in IsraelMemberAdorable, did your father light that week that she missed?
Mother in IsraelMemberYou’re kidding me, right? Please say you are.
Mother in IsraelMemberDoes the mustard go in the cereal or on the kugel?
Mother in IsraelMemberI saw this on “Ask the Rabbi”:
Question:
I have read 2 archive articles about exercise (one specifically about exercise on Shabbat).
I am trying to improve my well being through exercise. This includes both fat loss and muscle growth through lifting weights (barbell and machine weight). The trainer I deal with prescribes specific days to lift versus take off in order to promote the best results (e.g. Upper body one day, lower body the next, followed by a day off, etc.).
Would such exercise be prohibited on Shabbat? It might include about 1-1.5 hours lifting weight.
Answer:
Weight lifting is good but not for Shabbat. It has two main problems.
One, it is a week-day activity (Uvdin Dechol)
Second is the issue of prohibited medical procedures on Shabbat and exercising is included. (Shulchan Aruch OC 328; 42)
Try to talk to your trainer how to compensate for you missing Shabbat, maybe Motzaei Shabbat is a good time.
Additional answers of Rabbi Elchanan Lewis
Mother in IsraelMemberI’ve also heard something about it being assur to build muscles on Shabbos since it’s boneh. Not sure how reliable that is and I can’t remember the source.
Mother in IsraelMemberI think women used to give birth at home and didn’t miss lighting at all.
Mother in IsraelMemberHe probably doesn’t know he’s unblocked.
Mother in IsraelMemberWhat Mod-80 said. I once missed a week because I was in the hospital and the room I was supposed to light in was locked and nobody had the key. I had no other candles and after much rushing around trying to locate some, I had to give up because it got too late to light. I called a rav right after Shabbos, and he said that I did not have to add a candle.

May 4, 2011 5:32 pm at 5:32 pm in reply to: Is It Worth Releasing Bin Laden Photos To Prove That He's Dead #764391Mother in IsraelMemberI don’t think a picture is evidence that he’s dead, but I do think that if he weren’t dead, the army would be making it very clear that Obama is lying.
Mother in IsraelMemberis proof of a good woman standing behind him.
Mother in IsraelMemberHe was blocked, wasn’t he? I though it said that under his screen name.
May 1, 2011 2:15 pm at 2:15 pm in reply to: (speaking of chinese auctions….Did you EVER win ANYTHING?? #763241Mother in IsraelMemberI once won a phone in a chinese auction.
Wolf, was that Oorah’s auction?
Mother in IsraelMemberThanks for all the replies. Just to clarify a few points:
These are very close relatives–the kind who can walk into our house without knocking and whose fridge we open freely to hunt for food without asking them. I don’t want to say the exact relationship because there are a couple of people out there who know my identity, but my point is that there are some things you can ask of close family that you can’t ask of others. Still, we were guests in their home and there do have to be boundaries.
The particular daughter who uses this bathroom is a difficult person to approach about anything. She’s also more modern than the rest of her family and I don’t know if she would have understood.
Covering them with a towel wouldn’t have worked because they were on the back of the toilet and someone would have just pulled the towel off or it would have fallen into the toilet. There were also way too many of them for me to “borrow”–it wasn’t just 3 or 4.
My older boys are 13 and 14.5. My younger kids would probably also just say that it’s not tznius. My older boys are usually very careful themselves with what they see (they have requested that I don’t send them to abc store because of an inappropriate billboard), but I think the privacy of the bathroom makes things more complicated. They might have picked up the magazines not realizing what they would find inside also.
We’re going to have to go to this house again in the future, so I’m going to save this thread because I might get some ideas from it for next time. I really appreciate all your help.
Mother in IsraelMemberHmmm, maybe it was me you saw? 😉
Seriously though, as someone in the same boat as that woman, I would say that you have no reason to feel guilty, but in the future, you don’t have to worry about making her uncomfortable by offering to help. When I’m feeling really weak and in need of help, I don’t care what people think of me–I would appreciate any help I can get. I’ve had people bring me in a chair in a public place, shlep my groceries, hold my baby, etc. because they could tell that I wasn’t feeling well, and I’ve only felt gratitude toward them. It never makes me uncomfortable when I’m that desperate.
Mother in IsraelMemberThanks for the explanation, Mr. 80.
Mother in IsraelMemberDumb question–Isn’t all matzah whole wheat on Pesach? I was told that flour has to be bleached to become white flour and that there’s no way to bleach it without it becoming chometz.
Mother in IsraelMember🙁 I’m not your niece, but I’m really sorry for what you’re going through. That must really hurt.
