The OTD situation is growing by leaps and bounds for obvious reasons. Many of the adults have all their priorities wrong and the kids see this and get turned off. The focus for shidduchim is on money, money and more money. Even many yeshivas look at their balance sheets to determine if they are successful. We have a kollel system where wives have to go to work so the kids are being raised by spanish maids. You can tell who the frum jews are just by looking at their houses or should I say mansions. The kids look at the adults, realize that many of them are full of baloney and get turned off. Years ago, kids turned away from reform and conservative because they knew it wasn’t legit and now many are doing the same in our circles. Heaven help us.
MoshejoeMemberI’d give him a C- for his performance thus far. However, if you compare him to Bush, he gets a A++.
MoshejoeMemberI know your post was very real. I agree it is fitting for somebody like you to have a perfect 7 for 7 success rate when it comes to your daughters’ schooling and I do sympathize that your 7 daughters had to settle for far inferior boys. It really must be difficult for them to live with people who are flawed. If I were you, I would try to spend as much time as possible with your son-in-laws so you can teach them and guide them and hopefully they will turn out as well as all your daughters did.
MoshejoeMemberCherrybim, I love your sense of humor.
MoshejoeMemberThankfully, Shulamith isn’t closing down afterall. The parents fought hard for their school and wouldn’t let up and as a result there is another good school to add to the list in Brooklyn.
January 8, 2009 5:30 pm at 5:30 pm in reply to: BREAKING: Lipa to do another concert – “The Event”? #630220MoshejoeMemberI read the ad and I don’t know what the recent developments in EY has to due with the amount of promotion. But Lipa is an excellent singer and I am seriously considering going to the concert if I verify that there were proper haskomas.
January 6, 2009 9:07 pm at 9:07 pm in reply to: BREAKING: Lipa to do another concert – “The Event”? #630216MoshejoeMemberThere has to be, or at least there should be a hechsher or hoskoma for the following reason. Last time it was a real hassle to get the money refunded from the cancelled concert and if I am going to order tickets this time, I definitely want assurance that the same thing won’t happen again.
January 5, 2009 11:20 pm at 11:20 pm in reply to: BREAKING: Lipa to do another concert – “The Event”? #630210MoshejoeMemberHas any well known Rabbi given their hoskoma or hechsher on the concert?
MoshejoeMemberThankfully, there are many fine schools in Brooklyn. If one looks hard enough and asks the right people the right questions, one should have no problem finding one of them.
December 5, 2008 5:47 pm at 5:47 pm in reply to: Talking With Members of The Opposite Gender #662948MoshejoeMemberBlogging with the opposite gender should be ok as it probably won’t lead to mixed dancing.
MoshejoeMemberIt would be convenient to put our heads in the sand and say that everything is fine and dandy in all of our schools. But if one wants to be honest with him or herself, one only has to look at the incredible rise in kids at risk in our communities and also become familiar with the project our fine assemblyman Dov Hikind has been closely involved in over the last few months. You will see that we still have a lot of work to do.
MoshejoeMemberIt is a shame we can’t have an honest discussion without you calling my credibility into question in every single post. But that is not surprising. When somebody thinks so highly of himself and considers everything they agree with as “emes” and everything that they don’t agree with as “sheker”, there is little hope for objectivity and fairness. I hope that I will never become like that and will always be able to seek and appreciate the truth.
MoshejoeMemberIf you smoke nowadays, you have to be rich. Who can afford to spend $ 7 and $ 8 a pack? If you smoke two packs a day, that’s about a $ 100 a week.
MoshejoeMemberIf advising somebody to seek out the truth is slander, then I am proud to be guilty of slander. I was raised to call a spade a spade. I don’t wave pom poms just because somebody has shaichas.
Let’s move on. There are many fine schools in Brooklyn. I previously mentioned that Bais Yaakov Drav Meir is fantastic and Lev Bais Yaakov is a fine up and coming school. I will add that Bnos Yisroel off Kings Highway is a school that doesn’t get a lot of press but it is actually a very good school.
MoshejoeMemberJphone, you are right on the money! You are so correct that one needs to ask the children and parents of those presently in the school. Don’t base your decision on those in a message board who admitted to having shaichas with that school. Seek the truth and you will find it.
Hatzlocha.
MoshejoeMemberMommyoftwo,
When asking the parents who have their children in any particular school what they think of that school, it is important to make sure to focus on asking those parents who have children presently in the younger grades. If you ask parents of children in the older grades or who recently graduated for their opinion, the reports you receive may be based on their experiences from a long time ago which occurred when other people were running the school. It would be as if you are asking about a school which no longer exists.

MoshejoeMemberI’ll remember that SJSinNYC the next time I decide to write in Greek.
MoshejoeMemberI wholeheartedly agree with ‘I can only try’ in one respect. Ask the parents who have their kids in any particular school and you will find out the truth.

MoshejoeMemberSonay Matones, Yichyeh. Chanaka gelt, sure. But gifts? People need to realize that Chanaka is not Xmas.
MoshejoeMemberKeepinenterained, it is very likely that you indeed had an amazing school experience. I will be the first to tell you that there was a point in time when it was a top of the line school.
My intention was not to bash. Mommyoftwo asked for advice. Bored and Try offered their glowing recommendations which is their right, even though their opinion is in the minority. I offered my perspective to make sure mommyoftwo is not misled.
MoshejoeMemberWith the economy sinking and times as tough as they are, some jewish girls are doing the unthinkable. They are actually marrying for love.
MoshejoeMemberIn my humble opinion.
MoshejoeMemberBais Yaakov Drav Meir is the gold standard. Lev Bais Yaakov is a fine up and coming school.
If you prefer modern, Yeshiva of Flatbush is excellent and Barkai is a good school though they are very expensive.
MoshejoeMemberMommy of two. Please, please disregard the recommendations of bored@work and I can only try. They mean well but the school they recommend hasn’t been the way they describe it in 15 years. I know many who have gone there. At best, the kids do ok but are miserable. At worst, they end up hating frum people and rebel. Don’t put your child in a such a situation.
MoshejoeMemberIn a nutshell, the Yeshiva system is failing us now after a good 3 or 4 decade run simply because the yeshivas are now run by the 2nd generation. When the schools were founded 30 and 50 years ago or more, the founders gave their hearts and souls to the yeshiva. They bent over backwards to parents as their goal was simply to give a torah education to whoever wanted one. Nowadays, the founders are either no longer with us or too old to run the school and the schools are now unfortunately in the hands of their children. These children never had to work a day in their lives. They have always had everything given to them on a silver platter. The goals in yeshivas now are now to keep up the “reputation” of the school, make sure the current administrators have Lexus and fancy summer homes for them and their children.
MoshejoeMemberDon’t do it. You would be doing your child a major disservice. Kids need to interact with kids in order to grow. You don’t have to tell me that you are turned off by the administrators and principals and their holier than thou attitude. Most of us are. Still, I would strongly recommend you do anything possible to avoid homeschooling.
