Well, modern Hebrew took the word “LeFargain” (?????) from the Yiddish…

Fargeenen goes much farther than merely not to begrudge what your fellow man has. In addition to the Ayin Tov, there is a connotation of Lev Tov in “fargeenin yennem”.

Hacham: I haven’t seen the piece of R’ Dessler in question, but the words that you quoted are not R’ Dessler’s. They are found in Midrash Vayikra Rabba 2, and quoted by Rashi in Koheles 7:28.

@Sam2 -I was not disagreeing with the fact that according to the Mishnah Berurah one should wear a hat. I was merely taking issue with Abe Cohen’s first post on this thread namely that, “The Mishna Berura says you ‘can’t’ daven or bentch without a hat.”

You CAN’T shuckle lulav without a lulav, but you actually CAN daven or bentch without a hat. Should you? Ahhh… That’s a different question entirely! According to the Mishnah Berurah you should don an additional head covering for davening and bentching.

The shot of whiskey is sage advice.

I used to take the cake and coffee route and suffer.

Then a friend told me to break the fast with a shot of whiskey and hold off on the caffeine for a couple of hours. Although this sounded to me like inverse reasoning -I gave it a try, and have never regretted it since.

@Abe Cohen -No he does not. Anywhere. And even where he cites a double head covering as praiseworthy, a cap fits the bill just as well. That’s what the Chafetz Chaim (and most Polish and Lithuanian Jews of his times) wore on a daily basis.

It is worthwhile to point out that 50-100 years ago the fedoras worn were not necessarily black.

See the (in)famous pictures of the Bochurim in the Mir and Slabodka.

IMHO the black hat as a uniform is something that rubbed off on the Litvaks from the Chassidim.

And yes, I wear a black hat.

@Itche Srulik -I don’t know. I am a native Yiddish speaker and among peers, if you are not called by your first name with no prefix such as “Reb” this is the surest sign that you are not considered a real friend rather a distant acquaintance. Or it means that you’re about to be hit up for a donation.

@oy vey kids these days -Sorry to break it to you, but there is no one correct pronunciation of ??? in the Gemara. Some Sefardim (not the ones I learnt with in Yeshiva) may pronounce it as “Reebee”, but Ashkenazim (Chassidim and Misnagdim alike) pronounce it as “Rebbe” or “Rabbi”(segol or pasach under the reish and chirik under the beis). If you find a Talmud Bavli with nekudos from the times of the Amoraim (with a chirik under the reish) maybe I’ll agree with your post.

A very dear Syrian friend once told us very clearly that under no circumstances would people from his kehillah entertain a shidduch with any other Sephardic group, and certainly not with the Ashkenazim.

And this was a really Yeshivish guy who fit in 100% with all of his Askenazi friends.

Maybe there is something to what that poster said about the MO world being different as per socializing as a couple.

But as concerns the “Yeshivish” crowd:

I heard from some reliable and mature friends in Maalot Dafnah and Arzei HaBirah that sometimes these innocuous looking “couples’ meals” have led to serious problems -some of which have had irreversible consequences.

It’s not just another chumrah -it’s just common sense.

The immature young and beautiful open-minded types are still welcome to insist that it is all innocent fun and games, and that any social contact with the member of the opposite sex is suddenly muttar after you’re married. Besides, the men aren’t socializing with the women… Or are they? True, most of the time people stay within the confines of decency -but you never know whose marriage is already 3/4 on the rocks and suddenly finds understanding by a friend who is -whoops!- a member of the opposite gender…

It may start in the presence of the involved parties’ spouses, and it may end with recriminations shared by the guests/hosts after they get back home. But sometimes -as rare as that may be -it doesn’t. And that’s more than a good enough reason not to socialize as a couple.

One who doubts this should consult Rabbi Yitzchak Berkowitz or Rabbi Nochum Eisenstein and ask them what their opinion is on such meals.
