If a person is raised with almost no affiliation, save those trips to “temple” on the high holidays with their parents, HOW do they know better? If someone is raised like that, and then the hand that reaches out to them and helps them embrace Judaism is in fact Modern Orthodox, how I ask do they know better then to associate with that sect? No one here is arguing what is technically right and wrong. I for one wasn’t. What upset me is the dismissal of these so called apikorsus Jews that you don’t deem worthy of a handshake. When Hashem looks at his beautiful world full of his own children, and he sees one guy raised in a frum household, grown up stayed frum and raised a frum family, then sees another guy who was raised with zero affiliation and commitment to Torah, but somehow got involved with MO and keeps kashrus, shabbos, TaHa, but wears jeans and watches tv etc, does he love one more? I apologize for the run on sentence, I am just trying to get my point across before I go to sleep. I hope feif un does not leave the CR, I don’t want to either, people just need to be more sensitive to their fellow yidden. I know that I am not the only one in here from a modern background who became frummer. I also know that I am not the only one who is not wiring off my parents as worthless Jews who don’t know how to keep a mitzvah.

I think it has finally happened. This is the most offensive thread I have ever seen. No wonder why so many people go OTD. Calling MO people apikorus? Let me tell you a little bit about me. I grew up MO. Both of my parents are Baal teshuvas. Their parents never kept shabbos, kosher, taharas hamishpacha, etc. my parents both were never surrounded by yiddishkeit except when they would go to ” synogogue” for rosh hashana and Yom Kippur. Somehow in spite of all this, both of my parents found modern orthodoxy, bH! Through friends, class mates, the local orthodox Shuls in their respective neighborhoods, my parents slowly but surely became more religious and eventually found each other. I was raised modern orthodox, I kept shabbos 100% I kept kosher 100%, yes I wore pants but I was not allowed to wear a lot of the things that my friends wore. My faster had an idea of Tsnius, maybe it’s not what I call Tsnius now but it was in my fathers yes then. I went to shul every shabbos, I led groups and I Davened. ( unlike many of my more yeshivish friends now who I know hated shul and just slept all day). Eventually I became more “frum” left my secular college and went to Stern. I’m married bH with a child bH, live a frum happy life, I am blessed. But it hurts my heart literally when I read some of these comments! I definitely would not be who I am if it wasn’t for my apikorsus parents. My sister btw who is a good deal younger then me wear her jeans, goes to a co-Ed school, and she wants to be just like me. She doesn’t, along with my parents, hate that I took my orthodoxy farther, they are proud of me. My mother makes sure to say her brachas out loud around my son so he will learn the proper way to eat. My father still learns every single day. He has never missed a day of Tefilin since he was 22 years old, save the day after his heart surgery. My point is.. MO people are still Hashems children. Treat them as you would treat your yeshivish neighbor. They love Hashem to. They may not keep all of the same Mitzvos as you, but they do what they think is right. Please stop judging them so harshly.

Maybe they don’t think it is appropriate to really delve into the topic with students? I do agree that if it frustrating when people talk a big game about politics but cannot back up their points. I find that very often with Obama supporters either from work, or my husbands family. I don’t find it do much in their support for the president, but more in their negativity towards Romeny. Thankfully I have been able to set some people straight recently, because I on the other hand can argue my points until the sun comes up. Woman can and are excited, involved, and curious about politics. Anyone who says differently needs to go back in time a few hundred years where they belong.

Let’s agree to disagree. I appreciate everything you wrote, but I will still never understand the left and their way of thinking, I assume the same goes for you and the right. I don’t have time anymore tonight to post, but I did not want you to think I was ignoring you. Whatever happens in November, I hope only the best for our country.

This is not Israel though. We shouldn’t be fully relyin on these social programs. It is a huge burden on the rest of society when someone is on WIC, food stamps, welfare etc. Why should I work 9 hours, get doubly taxe because I dont work in the state that I live, so that the family down the block can eat and live on my dollar? Yes in some circumstances people really do need gov assistance, and they should get t! This foolery of Mitt completely ridding our country of welfare and benefits is a crock, and you know it. He has never said he it going to cut all of these programs, but as I have states before, he wants to look at them again and fine tune them. Do you think it is right for someone to work off the books and make a decent salary, and then take benefits from the government? I think it is absolutely disgusting.

May I add, anything you read in the NY times is so biased it is as though you are hearing the words from obamas campaigners themselves. Back me up guys.

How how how on earth can you think Obama policies will improve anyone’s lives? Obama got rid of the work requirement for welfare ( shocker). He has taken away people’s incentive to actually work for a living, and attempt to get off of welfare. He is the biggest supporter of class warfare I have ever seen, he is basically at war with anyone and everyone who has ever worked hard, inherited money etc. He lies up and down about his view on woman’s rights, but when you look at his staff and campaign workers, the salary differences between men and women is vast.

Now I love israel and I agree with you, somewhat. Romney IS a big supporter of israel. In almost all of his conferences, campaign stops, speeches you name it, he discusses his love for Israel and his hope for its safety. He basically condemned Palestinians saying there will never be peace with them because they don’t want it. He said that they actually have no real ties to the land, which is true, and completely supports bibi. He has been friends with Bibi since the 70’s, he would never snub him time and time again the way that the Obama admin. has. Please reconsider your vote because I do not think you have all the facts.

Yytz that is just not the case. Why does everyone thing all abortions are going to end WHEN Romney is president. Read his platform. In cases of incest, rape and if the mothers life is threatened, you can terminate. # 1 do you know long it will take for a new policy to go into effect? A long time. Romneys policies are NOT anti Torah. Obamas are and if you can’t see that you are clearly not paying any attention. Also I might ad, Romney is not going to stop all subsidies to private school, yeshivos etc. why does everyone believe all of this ” malarkey”. He does want to tighten the chain on welfare, food stamps etc, and good for him. Our country is in free fall, we need to get off our lazy tucheses and stop thinking that life is going to hand us every single thing on a platter with no hard work! BH Hashem made us able bodied, let’s put that to some good use!

I don’t want this to come out the wrong way but I want to make my point. Do I need my husbands Rabbis permission to wash my face in the morning? Or to put milk on my Cheerios? Why does every thing in life need to be dictated to us by the Rabbis? What is this world coming to? Israel is on the verge of distraction by Irans nuclear program, America’s morals are swiftly sinking lower and lower almost into oblivion, we are in the verge of a financial crisis, so many other things are going on, but here you are worried about whether or not women are ” allowed” to drive? Is it untsnius to cough in public, lest a man may turn his hea in response to the sound. I feel like we are slowly but surely aligning ourselves with the Saudis and I’m embarrassed to read posts like this one above.

Working on it.. Well said. I completely agree. Unfortunately people don’t realize that these funds have to stop at some point. I know people who have been on foot stamps, Medicaid, WIC, have section 8 housing and work part time off the books, who are living so comfortable why would they want a change. They are not thinking about the country as a whole, nor are they thinking about their future. Good luck to all of us in November!

As far as conservative not on favor of abortion and gay marriage, that is a moral issue, not a government control issue. Those are 2 completely different things. Liberals ( aka socialists) favor big government, government control, class equality, Sharing the wealth etc. conservatives favor equal OPPORTUNITY , capitalism ( unlike the left that has waged war on small business). Social issues are a different ball game.

NOT very. It’s so dangerous I can’t even explain it to you. My family used to be friends with a family, the parents are married first cousins. 4 out of 8 of their children were born with a genetic disease, and 3 of those 4 have passed away. The 4th is sick but bH doing pretty well. The gene pool is just to familiar and small with cousins marrying, it is not healthy.

When I was dating ( now I am super happily married bH bH) attraction was important, but just one of many things that are important to look for. Sometimes I feel like people don’t put enough emphasis on attraction, then on the other side of it you have people putting too much emphasis and people become too superficial.

I looked for midos like, did he hold the door for people behind him. How did he act with his mother , was he respectful and kind?

Did he have a good work ethic? ( my husband has a fantastic bH work ethic, and always wants to provide for our family no matter what).

The first time I watched him daven, I think it was on a yuntif, I knew there was something very special about him. Even now all this time later if I can I like to watch him daven, i can’t explain the feeling, he just has a lot of cavanah, I hope one day to have the same.

At the time I was looking for someone working and learning, he was doing both.

    Hope that helps!

WIY, you want a doer, not someone who just sits around all day and watches the kids. That is extremely offensive. I worked full time for 3 years, full time teacher and taught Jewish history to public school kids at night. Now I have a baby bH, and I’m staying home. Never do I find myself sitting around. I clean up I feed the baby , I change him ,I take him out, I do the dishes, I prepare dinner, I read to my child, I play with him, I fold laundry etc. what more can a husband want. Most mothers who are stay at homes are not sitting around. They are all doers.

See if she is a motivated person , does she have a steady job or does she live off of her parents. Watch her interact with her cousins, nieces, nephews. I don’t think there are specific clues to look for, but chances are getting married is not going to change her into a completely different person, so the answers are probably right infront of you! I have/had friends in high school and college who when around babies would say ” eww he pooped don’t bring him near me!”, even then in my head I would think ” yikes what kind of mother will they be?”.

A very large portion of his supporters are dependent on various government programs, benefits etc. this is why we need more JOBS, not more money poured into Medicaid and foot stamps. Ofcourse you will always have people who don’t want to work or even try to be sel sufficient, but nothing we do will ever change that.

He is not way ahead in the polls, he has a 5 point lead and that is because the DNC just ended. I mamish can’t understand anyone who would consider voting for him. I know so many frum Jews who are pro Obama it literally makes me perspire and turn red when I think of it. Yes many Jews take gov. benefits I am sure that is a partial reason. It is a silly reason because Romney is not getting rid of benefits, he just wants to tighten the leesh.

What really irks me is the fact that Obama is clearly so popular among minorities because he is black. This is not me being racist, I am being realistic. Over 90% of AA support Obama. Minorities are usually democratic anyone but this is overwhelming. I remember watching on the news before the last election, the reporter was interviewing random people (mostly African Americans) on the street, asking a few questions about the election. One question was who are you voting for and why. They all said Obama but couldn’t come up with any real reasons as to why. When asked who his running mate was, more than half did not know! I am talking about right before the election. My point is people who normally could not give about policies, campaign, elections etc.. Came out/will come out to vote in his favor because of reverse racism.

I was also in my 8th grade home room class. After our teacher told us what had happened, we were told that the phones were so overloaded they could not reach our parents. A number of my classmates parents worked in the WTC. I just remember crying because my father was a puce officer in the city, and I couldn’t reach my parents. BH my father was fine but he lost a lot of great friends, heroes who went back into the buildings to get more people out. I cannot believe how long it has been, it still feels like yesterday.

This thread just brought tears to my eyes. Every year on 9/11 I sit and watch the you tube videos of the towers coming down. I’m not sure why I do this, as I sit with a knot in my stomach the rest of the day, but I think it is supremely important that we never forget that day. My father was a member of the nypd, and he was at ground zero that day and for the months following. Something that I think is so unbelievable is how many Jews were supposed to be there that day but weren’t. In my class at the time, a friends father had a dentist appointment and was running late, normaly he would have been in the office before 9am. Many people were late to work because of Slichos, ordinarily they too would have been in their offices. BH for that miracle. I hope the families who lost loved ones have found peace, those lost will never be forgotten.

There is nothing wrong with speaking Spanish. There is something wrong with only speaking Spanish, in America. I think that is KFB’s point.i also find it disturbing when I, for example, go to 6 flags and see huge groupss of chassidish kids who dont speak any English. Living in America you have an obligation to learn the language and contribute to American society.
