To all of my friends building booths
Some unfortunate yearly, sad truths
Just as soon as you’re done
The rain, it will come
And become gravy upon your roast goose.
No matter if Sukkot is rainy or fine
I send this message to your house from mine.
Have a Chag that is healthy
The year should be wealthy
Parnossah and joy should be thine.
The message is good from Hashem
Gilad will be home once again
He will finally do a brocha
With his entire mishpocha
We need to daven for all IDF men (and women, of course).
minyan galMemberkapusta, now we all want to know the blonde joke – if it is CR suitable, of course. Please.
minyan galMemberYou should give the name of the LOR you have phoned, so that some of them don’t get several calls on the same topic. I am sure that they are very busy preparing for Sukkot.
October 11, 2011 7:56 pm at 7:56 pm in reply to: easy dessert recipes for simchas beis hashoava? #816822minyan galMemberWhy don’t you bake brownies? You can even make them from a mix. You can also take cake mixes and “doctor” them up. There is an easy recipe for doing this – I can look it up for you. You add oil, instant pudding and chocolate chips (to a choc. cake) and for different flavored cakes, you just add different pudding plus the oil. It is really easy. Do you want the recipe?
minyan galMemberSuch beautiful words, Emunah. I agree that you should have a blog – and so should your mother.
minyan galMemberAccording to the translation that I read, you are supposed to do kapporos with a goat. That is the only creature mentioned.
minyan galMemberI think that this week you should be researching the “Etrog” law.
I know that personally, I can only concentrate on one citrus fruit at a time.
minyan galMemberMay Hashem watch over her and grant her Refuah Shleima.
minyan galMemberThe Conservative shul that I attend is the only one in the area that holds twice daily minyans every day of the year. There are many Orthodox worshippers who come there to say Kaddish as it is “the only game” in the neighborhood. Incidentally, when I say Orthodox, I suppose that I mean what the rest of you would refer to as MO, as where I live, aside from Chabad, there are no frum people. Most of those who attend our local Chabad are also not what most of you would refer to as frum. My city only has about 18,000 Jewish people and the bulk of them are Conservative, if they are even affiliated. Incidentally, the 4 cemeteries in town are owned by the 2 Conservative shuls and are used by all of Rabbis in the city.
minyan galMemberD/T the fact that I live in a condo with a teeny balcony that has a complete roof (and a cruel condo board) I, alas, cannot have a sukkah. I make good use of the one at my shul, which is enormous.
minyan galMemberWe must remember that, indeed, Mod80 (and his group of Mod henchmen -kind of like Robin Hood and his band of merry men) knows who each and every one of us is. Why he could have private investigators following us to see how we spend our daily lives. So, if you notice a stranger who seems to following you, just remember that it could be one of the Mod’s shlichim. Of course, the one following me would quite possibly fall asleep due to the monotony of my daily life.
minyan galMemberBaal Habooze, I like your take on YK. A ‘spiritual shower” is a wonderful thing. I often feel like that after Shabbat services, particularly if the Parsha was inspiring, the davening and Torah reading were great and even the sermon was interesting. I suppose I should think of YK as a “spiritual schvitz” as it is a much deeper cleansing and must last a year, B’H’. I have so much to be thankful for and the coming year promises to bring even more great things (my first trip to Eretz), so I shall definitely be keeping your words in mind. Todah Rabah.
minyan galMemberI think that both of you should put a little sign on your lapels saying “YWN CR”. Then…………if you should happen to pass each other, you could introduce yourselves. I don’t know what the odds of you actually meeting are but it may be a nice thing to try.
minyan galMemberYT, I wish that I were your doc – I would have said “no fasting” as you are requiring omeprazole to ease your stomach from the side effects of the other meds. In any case, you had best eat a lot today – try a big bowl of mac and cheese for lunch and have a big helping of some kind of lockshin as a side dish for dinner. That should provide you with ample carbs. I wish you your easiest fast ever and that the coming year should bring you and your family the best of health and parnassah.
minyan galMemberIt is rather frightening to think that this person is a high school teacher. I think that besides just checking references and requiring a medical checkup, anyone charged with the responsibility of molding the minds of our next generation(s), should be subjected to a battery of psychological tests to ensure that they are both physically and mentally capable of performing their jobs. I wouldn’t want a child of mine being taught by someone like this potential stalker. Maybe there is something to be said for home schooling. At least you know who the teacher is.
October 7, 2011 10:53 am at 10:53 am in reply to: Rebbetzin Esther Baila Schwartz says bad news can be harmful to your health #815605minyan galMemberFerd, exactly what are your qualifications for denegrating a noted speaker? Any psychiatrist, psychologist or other health care professional will tell you that bad news (whether personal or political) can increase stress and stress may be bad for your health. First you say that because it is Erev YK you shall refrain, which I take to mean from speaking lashon hora, then you call the Rebbetzin’s audience a bunch of clueless women. I can assure you that amongst her audience are very “clued in” woman – and high numbers of them, many with university degrees and many holding down very responsible jobs. Nobody is forcing you to listen to her message, but you certainly make yourself look less than perfect (which we all are) by criticizing those who do.
minyan galMemberI received the same email. I receive a large number of chain emails and most of them are meaningless trash. I used to forward them (not to the exact number of people specified, just to my regular “forward” list. Most of them also want you to return them to the sender. Finally, I had enough. I will often return it to the sender with a note saying that I no longer participate in this sort of email. Sometimes I don’t even bother doing that. A lot of them are stories that turn out to be bubba meises anyway. I have started checking some of them on snopes and they usually incorrect. I will then notify the original sender that they have sent out incorrect information. I am tired of them. Between the chain mail and the spam, my mail box is always full. I have a spam filter but some things manage to get through – usually an offer to cut me in on a multi-million dollar deal from a bank in Nigeria. I think life was so much simpler (albeit slower) when we didn’t have email.
minyan galMemberYehudah, please ask about the fast. It doesn’t sound to me (an old nurse) like you should be fasting at all.
minyan galMemberI think Sam2 might just have the right idea. Why can’t more of us just simply be Jewish? We all follow the same Torah and celebrate the same Chagim. There seems to be so much “inter-sect” arguing going on all the time that it leaves little time for doing good things for mankind.
minyan galMemberStamper, I just cringe when I see the word Jew used as you used it. Surely you could have found another way to make your point.
minyan galMemberKenmore products are made by many different manufacturers. Even different models of the same fridge may come from different companies. I have had a few Kenmore appliances and have always asked the salesperson which company manufactured it and have always been told. I have never had any complaints about my Kenmore products. I currently have a stacking washer/dryer from them and it is wonderful.
minyan galMemberOf course you must return the money. This morning the identical thing happened to me. I am trying to quit smoking and am using both the patch and an electronic cigarette (with great success, I might add). I ordered some refills and an extra battery. The batteries are 15.95 each. Instead of sending me one battery, they sent one box of five batteries. That is quite a financial error for a small company. I have emailed them and asked them what they want me to do. I said that I will mail them back if they pay the postage. I shall update you after I hear from them.
minyan galMembersea shells, eating prunes will help you COME ACROSS. They will do for you exactly what a probiotic yogurt such as Activia, does.
minyan galMemberWhen I worked I always had the bedroom alarm clock set 10 minutes fast. When the alarm rang I always jumped out of bed before I realized that I had spare time. In that firt moment of groggy awakening, I always managed to fool myself and I was quite wide awake (well, at least had my feet on the ground) before realizing I had extra time.
minyan galMemberPBA, thank you for your comments. I will not debate this issue again. All that I will say is that I study Torah and other Judaic topics, attend morning minyan almost daily, light candles every Friday and attend Shabbat services 52/52. For me, that suffices.
minyan galMemberFor Shticky Guy – an entertaining tip
So your hosting skills, they do not slip
You won’t get un-nerved
Remembering what you served
Keep notes into which you can dip.
(whenever I have company, I write down who I had, what I served, the occasion, the color of the tablecloth and what the centerpiece (if any) was – I know what I served to somebody 15 years ago.)
minyan galMemberNow that the New Year’s arrived
I’m so glad that this thread is revived.
YomTov brings much work
Duties we cannot shirk
So I am happy that “Limericks” survived.
Tsu alla a zeesen gut yor
We’ll maintain friendships as before
We shall traverse the miles
With our keyboards and smiles
And maintain CR manners so nobody’s sore.
minyan galMemberRealist, you are a little confused. Shredredy does not visit the CR. He posts on a different website.
Must you be an American resident to sign the petition?
minyan galMemberPB; It sounds as if you should not be fasting at all. There must be some reason for the extreme side effects that you suffer and, as others have said, you should definitely have it checked out. Perhaps you should speak with your Rabbi before YK. He may advise you not to fast until you find out what is causing this problem. You would then be able to attend shul and feel the wonderful awe of the day.
600 kilo bear: you should definitely not be using (or mis-using) Immodium. You could cause a bowel obstruction, particularly if you have ever had any abdominal surgery – even an appendectomy as a child. Did you thoroughly read the label. It is not to be used except for its indicated purpose. Also, using an unapproved (in N. America) medication that you purchase from a possibly questionable source can also be very dangerous. To risk your health in order to have an easier fast is not the right thing to do. If you can’t fast, don’t – but don’t endanger yourself to do it.
minyan galMemberYou sound like a very level headed young lady. You cannot do too many things at once and do them all well. You say that presently your priority is to finish your degree. As you say that will be within the next year, then concentrate on doing that. After you graduate, you will then have the time to enter shidduchim and be able to concentrate on that. Trying to get the maximum out of a date while worrying about a term paper that is due decreases the chances of both being done well. You are one smart cookie and I predict a happy future for you.
minyan galMemberDoes anyone know if his health has improved since his recent hospitalization? I can’t seem to find any information about his health status. His name is still on the mishaberach list at my shul.
minyan galMemberTo most of the commenters here: Not all Conservative synagogues are egalitarian. It is up to each individual one to decide for themselves if this is what they wish to do. They have definitely NOT abandoned kashruth. I don’t know what would give you that idea. You have them mixed up with the Reform movement.
minyan galMemberGumball, you are correct to daven before an exam, but that is just a small part of the preparation. Studying is still the number one method of preparing for exams. Consider this – would you want to be operated on by a doctor who made up a lot of his answers? You had best make yourself a study schedule so that you study a certain amount of time everyday and when it comes to eam time, then a good review should be all that is necessary. Doing this will also prepare you for later life when you must establish a routine or you will get nothing accomplished. Consider your high mark a one time gift from Hashem and now you must prepare yourself properly for exams – and for life.
minyan galMemberHow old are you? I think you are probably much too young to be participating in CR discussions.
minyan galMembertaking a break, ytour prof sounds like a pretty great guy. I hope that you will consider sending this message to him (or an English explanation of it).
minyan galMemberYT, I am so happy that you were able to get to shul. It must have felt wonderful just to be able to get out of the house – and as the outing was to shul, its a wonderful thing. I hope that you are not considering fasting on YK. If you are wavering on this decision, please, speak to your Rav and your doctor. I don’t think either of them would want you to put yourself at any risk. At this point in your recovery your body requires protein – and a lot of it.
minyan galMemberworkinonit, have you considered some public speaking or elocution lessons? These activities can often raise your level of self confidence. There is a wonderful group called Toastmasters that is usually men only (the women have their own groups called Toastmistresses) that do just that sort of thing. People take turns writing speeches and giving them at the meetings. This organization has done wonders for many people. Another thing you could do is to chair a group – at your shul or some other organization. As chairperson, you will be required to work with other committee members and present reports to your board. You will be doing some very good work and helping yourself at the same time. Best of luck in your endeavor to overcome shyness.
October 3, 2011 12:36 pm at 12:36 pm in reply to: source for not buying stuff for a baby before its born needed #813846minyan galMemberEven if you have an ultrasound, they always ask you if you want to know the gender of the child. If you don’t and it is time for them to scan “that” area of the baby, they tell you to look away. It is not only Jewish people that often won’t purchase baby items prior to the birth. I have been told the same thing by many gentiles, so I wonder if it is a superstition or if it is from some part of the Torah that the goyim know as the Old Testament.
minyan galMemberMod 80, I believe that you mis-heard part of the lecture. The prof said that the entire universe lives on Sesame Street. Now even to me, the one with the non-scientific mind, that makes perfect sense.
minyan galMemberMany years ago my aunt took a flight and arrived 5 minutes before she left. (Of course, I must add that she was on a 55 minute flight and she was flying during the night when the clocks changed from daylight to standard time.)
minyan galMemberYT, I hope that the medications have now started doing their job and that you are well along in your recovery. I hope that you will be well enough to be able to enjoy a Yomtov meal with your family. It is still important to spend a lot of time resting, so don’t push yourself. My best wishes for a healthy year are with you and your loved ones. Shana Tova.
minyan galMemberusa-tralian, what a wonderful story. It reminds of the stories told by Rabbonim to make a point when teaching. However, I am very happy that I am not your plumber, but this event will give you some extra assets to donate to tzedaka. Co-incidentally, yesterday while walking across a parking lot to go to a Judaica store, I found a coin on the ground. As soon as I entered the shop I walked to the area near the cashier and dropped the coin into a tzedaka box. I know that Hashem did not mean for me to keep the money – even though it was a small amount.
minyan galMemberI was always told that if you sleep during the day on Rosh Hashana you will have a sleepy (unproductive) year.
minyan galMemberam yisroel chai and everyone else who is dearly missing a loved one – I cannot say anything more than what aries did so eloquently. I was also blessed to have my mother for 92 years and it is just 3 years since we lost her earthly body. I know that she is somewhere, still laughing and asking anyone under 60 if they are married, because has she “got someone for you”. After quite a long period of sadness when thinking of her, I am now able to laugh out loud when I think of the things that she said. I am now with my family in Toronto for the Yonmtovim and my daughter and I have mentioned her in our conversations several times daily – always with laughter because she loved to laugh and, as everyone called her, she was the lady with the million dollar smile. So, eventually things will get better and the good memories will overtake the bad ones. I know that it is difficult to believe at this time, but it will happen. I wish you a peaceful New Year.
minyan galMemberTO ALL OF MY CR FRIENDS:
From my house to your house……I wish you and your families a very happy Shana Tova 5772. May it be a year replete with happiness and good health. May Hashem grant you peace and joy and may your homes be filled with laughter and love. Thank you all for your friendship and for allowing this Conservative gal a chance to learn so much from each of you.

September 27, 2011 9:47 pm at 9:47 pm in reply to: someone with some knowledge of jewelry, please help #813058minyan galMemberWhat metal are the earrings and what color is the metal? I have been geeting irritated from a pair of white gold studs because they are old and probably contain nickel – the usual culprit for irritation. The jeweller rhodium plated them for me and I have had no problems since. Most white metal – white gold, sterling silver and even platinum is rhodium plated because it makes the metal very bright and shiny. If I am not mistaken, it is a derivative of platinum. I paid 20.00 to have this done. I don’t know what can be done for yellow colored metal.
minyan galMemberYT, I hope that you are feeling stronger today. You said that you were going to attempt to take a shower. You should try to borrow a “bath” bench so that you can sit while you shower. It decreases your chances of becoming dizzy and falling. If you need to purchase one, they are relatively inexpensive. If you use a bench, you will also be more comfortable using a hand held shower head. They are easy to install (even I can do it, so it has to be easy) and very inexpensive. Then, you can sit and shower and rinse off. You should also have someone in the bathroom with you while you are showering…….just in case. Perhaps there is an agency where you are that can send a male orderly or health care aid to stand by. I suppose that your wife could assist you, but that depends on your size and her size. The last thing that you need is for her to be injured trying to prevent you from falling. I don’t mean to sound “preachy” but as an old nurse, I just want you be safe. If you can’t shower safely, don’t shower at all.
September 22, 2011 6:21 pm at 6:21 pm in reply to: I hope no one has ever experienced these, but if you did, maybe you can help #813765minyan galMemberKB, my cataract experience was very different from most people’s. Firstly, I had not noticed any change in my vision and only required the surgery on one eye. At my yearly exam, the doctor said that I was developing a cataract. The following year she told me it was ready to be removed. I had it done a couple of weeks later and had a soft lens implanted. For the next couple of days my vision was very “crisp” and I didn’t need to use my “over the counter” reading glasses, but within a week or so, I needed them again. I was told that was very normal although my friend had both eyes done a few weeks apart and no longer needs her bifocals at all. She wears a very weak OTC reader. About a year ago, I was told that I am developing a “secondary” cataract on the operative eye and am developing a cataract on the unoperated eye. I am told that the secondary cataract is treated by a zap from a laser right in the office. A couple of weeks ago I was told that I can have the unoperated eye done whenever I feel it is the right time. I suppose that one of these days I shall do it – in the spring, after my trip to Israel (insurance reasons). I am beginning to notice that small print is little more difficult to read these days and I use the strongest OTC lenses that I can find – 3.50. I don’t feel like paying for prescription glasses before I discuss the option of having a “reading” lens implanted at the time of the surgery. This is a fairly new development (within the past 8 -10 years) and only became available in Canada a short time after my original cataract surgery. I had no post-op problems with the first surgery. I hope that I have given you enough information for your project. I forgot to mention that the doctor told me the reason that I developed only one cataract (and at a relatively young age – 60) was because I had been on a high dose of prednisone for quite some time, followed by a low dose for about a year to treat an autoimmune disease. This was about 4 year before developing the cataract. Apparently, prednison can cause an earlier onset of cataracts.
September 22, 2011 1:48 am at 1:48 am in reply to: Do Married Women Help Out Doing the Yard Work and Car? #1074692minyan galMemberQueen, it makes you a well rounded, multi talented and multi faceted person. You must be very interesting to talk to because you are well versed on a wide variety of subjects. Many people who may seem critical of you are probably just envious.
minyan galMemberyenta. you should go to a medical supply house and have one of their specialists fit you properly. Compression hose come in different strengths – I believe measured in mm of hg, like blood pressure. You may require a script from your doctor. Perhaps you may wish to start with a good quality support hose that may be purchased in department stores and some pharmacies. I just checked the package of the compression hose that I wore after I broke my hips and after my hip replacements. The original script was given to me by the ortho surgeon and they are 20-30 mmHg.
