“This is not a secular Jewish site or a Zionist site and we don’t care at all what those clubs do.”
It seems to me that while the majority of the posters here are frum, many different opinions are welcome, and just because the majority of posters are frum, you have absolutely no idea who else is reading these posts – anyone from the secular to the frum. It also appears to me that there are plenty of people here in the CR that are Zionists. There seems to be a lot of people around here who support Israel and its right to existance, even if it appears you wouldn’t care if it is wiped off the face of earth by an arab missile.
Incidentally, the boycott has absolutely nothing to do with kashrut.
You seem to have a lot of anger bottled up.
minyan galMemberGet your cell phone records from your provider. You can then show that you were not on your cell phone a few minutes before or at the time that the ticket was issued.
minyan galMemberWolf: Mazel Tov for being accepted into kindergarten. I hope your family has assach naches from you in your chosen course of studies. I also hope that they give you a “cubby” with a high hook so you don’t strain your back when hanging up your jacket. I also hope that you have a pair of mittens attached to each other with a long string so that they go through your sleeves and you won’t lose them. You may spend the balance of the summer labeling all of your sweaters and other school supplies. Please let us know when you get to Dick and Jane (whoops, I think that is first grade).
minyan galMemberzahavasdad – age is actually shown more on the face than the hair. Even if you have a lot of grey hair, if your face still looks young, people can tell that you are young. This past Shabbat, at my shul there was a Bar Mitzvah. When the bochur’s father went to the bimah, my friend said to me that he looked quite old to have such a young child – he had a full head of silver hair. I said to her that I thought he looked young and it was just his hair. When they walked around with the Torah, it was easy to see that the father was probably no older than his early 40’s – if that. My friend then agreed with me – it was only his hair and from the distance it was hard to tell his age.
minyan galMemberAm Yisroel I’m so very glad
That you have joined our crowd, we are mad
We pen jingles so silly
One’s a pip, one’s a dilly.
Stick around cause this ain’t no fad.
We have labored for quite a long time
To put all that we know in a rhyme.
It keeps us quite happy
Though some think we are sappy.
We aren’t asking them for a dime.
minyan galMemberEnough with the cheesecake already
We are all getting quite heady
This sugar excess
Has made us a mess
Tonight have a peach before bed-dy.
minyan galMemberoptimus: good catch on the Mod’s new subtitle.
Mod. 42, I hope that you got a suitable raise to go along with the fancy, new title (or subtitle). Yasher koach and may you be as successful in all of your endeavours. Keep watching for your bouquet of flowers – virtual ones – in honor of this auspicious occasion. (of course, I have absolutely no idea how to send virtual flowers, but it is the thought that counts).
June 13, 2011 3:10 pm at 3:10 pm in reply to: Unbelievable Video: Thief Axes Tree To Steal Bike In Kensington #777359minyan galMemberInteresting how many people tried to stop the fellow with the axe, but apparently nobody called the police. I am quite sure that among all of the bystanders, one of them had a cell phone. The other interesting thing is that the person who stole the bike is not the same one who chopped down the tree.
minyan galMemberkilobear – yes, you have returned and are as grumpy as a bear awakening from hibernation. I just reported what I read elsewhere on another frum website. Do not shoot the messenger. There are plenty of other liquors that you can make a lechaim with.
June 13, 2011 2:25 pm at 2:25 pm in reply to: Need remedy for crazy pregnancy hormones during last weeks…. #777665minyan galMemberAiries – you took the words out of my mouth. I was also going to suggest a massage. There are many massage therapists who sub-specialize in treating pregnant women. If you have a good massage and still don’t feel right after a couple of days, then I would suggest a visit to your doctor. I suspect that the doctor would tell you all is normal and that each pregnancy is different. B’H’ the last few weeks should pass very quickly and that you soon shall be the mother of another happy and healthy child.
minyan galMembermirs1: Go for it – follow your heart and your dream. You will never regret it. I went back to school at 29 and became an RN. I took it slowly (it was a 2 year program) and did it over 3 years. Yes, sometimes the laundry didn’t get done on time. My daughter, who was 8 yrs old when I started learned that she would not die of a dreaded disease if she wore the same socks for 2 days. There was even the odd time that I stopped at KMart on my way home and picked up some underwear or socks for her because of my schedule. Everyone in the family has to pitch in but as long as you don’t fret over dust balls, you will do great. Incidentally, I managed to keep up most of my social obligations and was even the president of my Hadassah chapter while attending school, while maintaining a very high GPA. It is very do-able. Yasher koach.
minyan galMemberThis cheesecake talk is insane
Its taking up room in my brain
I will now take a break
From my freezer I’ll take
The pumpkin one that remains.
Incidentally, my chaverim on line
Did you know that cheesecake tastes fine
Straight from the freezer?
In fact its much eezer(easier)
To eat with lots of coffee – divine
This thread makes me laugh a lot
And with all of the troubles we’ve got
Around the world brewing
Its nice to be doing
These poems that we just jot.
minyan galMemberblabla – your poem brought tears to my eyes. I can really feel your pain. I have been where you are now and there IS a light at the end of the tunnel. I hope that you have someone that you can confide in and that you are under the care of at least, your family doctor. If you want to write to me personally (or talk on the phone) just notify the Mods that they can give you my email address and from there we can trade phone numbers. I know that I am decades older than you but a friend is a friend and perhaps you can benefit from my experience. I would love to hear from you. Just remember, like “Annie” said: “The sun will come out tomorrow – you can bet your bottom dollar on that.”
minyan galMemberbaron: apology graciously accepted. I agree that you showed a great deal of reponsibility by starting this thread.
minyan galMemberEnglishman: I think that a small amount of grey in your hair and your beard indicates that you probably look very distinguished. Some people (depending on their occupation) actually pay money to achieve the same look. In the world of business it could be considered a sign of maturity and experience.
minyan galMemberI don’t know mine – don’t recall ever having been tested. At my age, I don’t think that I even want to know.
minyan galMemberMazel Tov! A long, happy and healthy life bist 120 to all of you. Enjoy her because before you blink, you will B’H’ be under the chuppah with her.
minyan galMemberLeitzim – I do believe that this room has door marked “exit”. If you are offended by people spending time here, then kindly use the above-mentioned door. Some of us have a lot of time available to us and enjoy schmoozing and learning here.
minyan galMemberOomis, to me you look gaunt
So I think more cheesecake you want.
I will join you for one
And won’t we have fun
Until Jenny Craig begins us to haunt.
minyan galMemberlesschumras- I agree with your question #2. I have heard that the intermarriage rate is hovering around 70% these days – I cannot cite the source because I don’t remember. I even know an extremely frum man who was more “attracted” to gentile woman and he married one – of course, after she converted. She now has 9 children and wears a sheitl. But, the point is where would he have had the opportunity to become involved with her in the first place? I know that once a person is converted, we are to accept them as if they were born Jewish, but usually, no matter how frum they are, something is lacking (my personal opinion). I often think that because “being Jewish” is more than religion – it consists an awful lot of culture. Most secular Jews have something about them that is more Jewish than the most frum convert. This is not meant to be a blanket statement, just a generaliztion from my personal observations. What do the rest of you think? I know it is a little off the topic of this thread.
minyan galMemberSpeaking of schnapps, I just finished reading an online article that the Federation of Jewish Mens Clubs have banned whiskeys from Scotland because of that country’s embargos on Israeli exports. There were a few brands listed including Chivas.
minyan galMember23 is the house number that I lived in for 40 years. All the Yomtovim were celebrated there and Shabbat candles burned brightly every Friday night at #23.
minyan galMemberMy how this week has flown
But my knowledge of Torah has grown.
With Shavuos behind us,
It’s time to remind us
To have a Shabbat filled with peace in our home.
minyan galMemberTo the moderator who removed the “slavery” post. Many, many thanks. Chag Sameach.
minyan galMemberSandrac, perhaps you should stop looking at vehicles so closely. It is difficult to get into a minivan or an SUV when wearing a skirt no matter how long it is. Occasionally, for a brief moment an skirt may creep up a bit while manouvering oneself into a vehicle.
minyan galMemberChag Sameach to everyone. May we all ess and fress and learn Torah tonight in the best of health.
minyan galMemberTo Am Yisroel Chai:
May I also add wishes – the best
I’m quite sure that I speak for the rest.
Have a long happy life
With your lovely new wife
And with good health you both should be blessed.
minyan galMemberBpt, can you just picture it? He brings the girl home and her mother asks the usual – “did you have a nice time?” “Sure, Ma, I can help you with the grocery shopping now. I learned how to check expiration dates. And by the way, chickens are on sale.”
minyan galMemberMods: how did the last post by Baron Fritz pass the moderation process? No matter what a person’s feelings about Obama are to post a so-called joke about him being a slave is disgusting. Nothing funny or Torahdek about that remark.
minyan galMemberHaLeiVi: Take your 5 year old son to a speech therapist. My daughter had the same problem. I took her to a therapist just once. She gave her some exercises to do and showed her where her tongue had to be when pronouncing “R”. My daughter practiced the exercises for a couple of days and the problem was solved – and this was 40 years ago. She was also about 4 or 5 when I took her as they need to be old enough to understand how to do the exercises.
minyan galMemberCan somebody please tell me what a “French” roast is? I am assuming the French part refers to the cut of the beef. It isn’t a word used in my part of the world. If you can cook it on top of the stove in a “pot roast” style, could it be similar to a chuck roast or a similar cut? BTW, the recipes, both meat and dairy, sound terrific.
June 7, 2011 12:09 pm at 12:09 pm in reply to: Difficulty of a College course for Yeshiva Guy #775757minyan galMemberHave you considered taking a senior high school level chemistry and biology in summer school before the college season begins in the fall? Even if you have taken them before, it will be excellent review. Or you could get the high school textbooks and some exam review books and work by yourself, with a study buddy or even a tutor.
minyan galMemberTonight is Tikkun L’eil Shavuot.
I certainly hope I can do it
To stay wide awake
So more knowledge I’ll take
And share in community ruach.
I know we will have lots to eat
There’ll be blintzes and cheesecake – no meat.
We’ll study Torah all night
It will be pure delight
In the morning, my pillow I’ll greet.
Chag Sameach to all of my CR friends. Study, fress and enjoy.
minyan galMemberwalter s: Are you serious? You actually think that sitting upstairs at Wegman’s is considered a date??
minyan galMemberPS:
I find that most of the time
I am speaking in metre and rhyme.
A-A-B-B-A
Try saying that all day
And my friends fear I’m crossing the line.
minyan galMemberWolf – I am really dating myself, but here goes. If you have a lot of hair do you really think that just a “little dab” of Brylcream will “do ya?” And does Bosco really give you energy and sunshine vitamin C? And does Kraft peanut butter really stay fresher in the jar than peanuts in the shell? I think not.
minyan galMemberIt hasn’t been even one year
And twelve pages we have filled up here.
Most are just bandwidth waste
That we’ve written in haste
But they’ve made all our friendships more dear.
So Blinky I thank you a lot
This idea of yours was so hot
We’re all having fun here
No work’s getting done here
And do I care about that – NOT.
minyan galMemberPBA – Yom huledet sameach – until 120.
Oomis – May you and your bashert enjoy many more long, happy and, most importantly, healthy years together with mazel and with glick.
minyan galMemberThe chewable Lactaid tablets must contain some type of filler or binder that is dairy.
June 6, 2011 3:46 pm at 3:46 pm in reply to: How much davening do you say from the siddur, how much by heart? #774955minyan galMemberI read an article last year (and for the life of me I cannot remember where) that no matter how much of the service you know by heart and therefore do not use the siddur, you should always use it for every Kaddish in case you forget a word.
Personally, I would say that I do some parts by heart and use the siddur for some parts. I wish that I knew more by heart because I enjoy davening with my eyes closed. I seem to feel closer to Hashem that way. (now I wish I could learn to keep my eyes open during the sermon).
minyan galMemberI agree with all of the posters. The Mods do a terrific job. There is little to no lashon hora on this site – particularly if you compare it to some of the other sites around.
I propose that at 6:00 PM today (EDT) that we all raise a large glass of Manishewitz Sweet Wine (my personal fave) and drink a toast to the Mods. L’Chaim. (now – I would like my pin, my Tshirt and a coffee mug with Mod 80″s picture on it)
minyan galMemberAh do believe that a location can only be considered southern if most local restaurants and lounges serve mint juleps – with freshly grown mint – all year round. Ah personally don’t care for them, but they seem to be the quintessental southern drink. Ah would much prefer a small glessele Manischewitz sweet concord wine. This message is brought to you from the Canadian northland.
(but after having visited Atlanta and New Orleans, twice each, ah think ah know a bit about the topic. Shalom y’all.)
minyan galMemberAs you will soon know from this ditty
I am being silly and giddy.
I have been up all night
Something’s not right.
So, another limerick from this old biddy.
Back in biblical times
When a man lived twenty times nine
Do you think he was able
To sit at a table
At the bank and ask for loan prime?
“I think bist a hoondret und tzvantzik
The loan will be paid back in gantzik
Then for sixty more years
The mortgage is clear
And monthly we’ll be able to tantz-ik.”
For example, Noach the builder
Was short a few thousand guilder.
Said:”I know my home’s large
But it converts to a barge
To shlep animals out of the vilder.”
Would the bankers consider our Noach?
They could see he certainly had koach.
For such intricate detail
Before he could set sail.
I think they would give him the dough-ach.
This ends my ridiculous premise
I promise – this the emmes.
I’m going back to bed now
I hope to sleep, somehow
And maybe my poem will get famous.
minyan galMemberTo all who responded to my post with such kind words and thoughts – Todah Rabbah. I really do think that I will remember these words during the very difficult, and always so sad, Yizkor service. It is a minhag at my shul that everyone stays for Yizkor. If I am not mistaken it is because there are so many who have passed away and have nobody to say kaddish for them. Also, at my shul on Shabbat, everyone stands for the last mourner’s Kaddish – for the same reason. I wish you all a chag sameach – enjoy good food for the body and great learning for the soul. I plan on partaking of both.
minyan galMemberI say for my entire family. I am the only one left. My father A’H’passed away in 1988, my mother A’H’ in 2008 and my only sibling, my younger brother A’H’ in 2001. If I don’t go there is nobody to say yizkor for them. I also say for my grandparents and go for their yahrzeits, as well.
minyan galMemberI just made a chocolate cake
For Shavuos I thought I would bake
It looked just so yummy
That there’s lots in my tummy
Another one I’ll have to make.
The cream cheese icing on top
Meant that I just couldn’t stop
Now that one “little” taste
Has expanded my waist
I think another slice I will chop.
I have now had coffee and cake
Dinner, I just didn’t make.
Boy did I fress!
My kitchen’s a mess
But I think a nap I will take.
minyan galMemberRe: my last limerick
Some of my rhymes are quite silly
They flow through my mind – they are dillies.
Some are so deep
They could put you to sleep
All written by this Canadian filly.
minyan galMemberTo the Moderator known as Twenty
This thread has limericks plenty.
They are easy to do
Like to polish a shoe
And with one click, off they are senty.
minyan galMembermikehall: Thank you so very much for posting the link. It is definitely one of the most powerful articles that I have ever read. The tears are streaming down my face – I don’t know how his grandson found the koach to tell his zaida’s story. He is also a hero for writing it and bringing an actual family back to tell their story. It is so true – we keep talking about the “six million”, but we don’t know any actual names. Well now we do. I am going to ask if I can read this story from the bimah at my shul next Yom Hashoah.
minyan galMemberI’m a day early, my message is good.
Tomorrow, no time for CR neighborhood.
My Shabbat wish: Shalom
For all in your home
And a prayer for Klal Yisroel if you would.
