bombmaniac: if you are that bored at work, it is definitely time for you to move on to something more challenging. You are lucky to have a job to hold on to until you find something that is more suitable.
minyan galMember“i post here because im bored”
bombmaniac, if you are so bored, why don’t you find something constructive to do with your time? I don’t know if you are a student on vacation or a working person, but there are many places that would gladly love to have you volunteer – such as old folks homes or senior centres or your own shul, as examples. Or you could take a class – even strictly for interest’s sake such as an advanced computer class or using your digital camera to the best advantage. Do you participate in any sports – this is the best time of year for that.
My mother A’H’ used to have a saying: “People who are bored are often boring, themselves.
minyan galMemberI am passionate about life. July 20 will be 10 years since I survived a cardiac arrest – so that partially explains my passion. But, at the present time, my life and lifestyle are better than they have ever been in my entire adult life. My late parents would be so happy to know how good my life has become. I attribute most of my new life’s goodness to finding my way back to a wonderful Jewish lifestyle (I don’t want to sound like one of the “born again” Xtians) and shul. I have become very active in my shul and in the Jewish and general communities. It keeps me very busy and very happy.
minyan galMemberChildren children, no bickering please. I will not comment on the topic you are quibbling about, but I do appreciate the information that Health provided. Nuff said.
minyan galMemberIt doesn’t sound at all normal and I would suggest that you find a walkin clinic. If you need antibiotics (or something else), the sooner you begin treatment, the better. If it is strep it is very important that you have a throat swab to find out which type of strep it is because untreated Group A strep can lead to health problems.
minyan galMember“A little bit of fun = years of regret and tremendous effort to get back on track…”
Don’t you think that she was “meant” to come back – it was in Hashem’s plan. Many of our youngsters who go off the derech completely do it for many reasons. However, many of them do it because they have been raised in such an insular environment that they feel like the odd man out. They learn about the “outside” world from a variety of places and begin to wonder about such mundane things as TV’s, movies, computers, etc. Then when they experience some of these things, they just grab on with both hands. I think that parents should (with a great deal of supervision) introduce some of these to their children so that they don’t feel like they are being left behind or left out. A couple of years ago I had a conversation with a young person who left the very frum life behind for just these reasons. He told me that he felt badly for his parents and siblings but he had to live his life in his own way. He told me that he couldn’t leave Judaism and his love for Hashem and for studying behind, so he became a Conservative Jew. After a few years, his parents began to understand that he was a different person that his siblings and began to sort of accept his choice. They began speaking and there was far more shalom in his family. They even began eating at his home as he still kept the same level of kashruth as in the home was raised.
minyan galMemberMod 80, may I say that your sense of humor and keen wit are in rare form today. I am enjoying it, even if I cannot understand half of it. It is making me zeyer confused.
minyan galMemberMy friends I must apologize – and only just this time
My poem yesterday re thumbs – didn’t even rhyme
I blame it on the heat wave
Which makes my brain misbehave
So now I am relaxing with water laced with lime. (the fruit that is)

bombmaniac: Exactly how do you know this? Did you receive a registered letter stating his opinion of you? Because your posts have been edited or declined a few times means nothing. It has happened to most of us.
minyan galMemberFirstly, realize that my comments are coming from a non-frum point of view. s2021’s friend is to be commended. She possibly appreciates her current lifestyle even more than someone who never experienced anything else. She had the opportunity to go either way and she chose the right way. This is very similar to many Amish – who are allowed to stray from the fold for a year at a certain age. Nearly all of them come back to their colonies after the year is over because they realize they belong with their families and their chosen lifestyles. A frum person who experiences some of the secular lifestyle (and it doesn’t sound as if this person did anything terrible) and remains frum, knows the right path.
minyan galMemberI think that sometimes a thread is closed because it has been analyzed to death. Sometimes there is only just so much to be said about a topic before it becomes stale. With the “cut fruit” topic, what more could have been said? All sides of the issue appeared to have been dealt with – often a lot more than once. I don’t think that the moderators go out of their way to make anyones life miserable – but they must be very objective and I am sure that there are guidelines that they must follow. OTOH, I have had my posts nixed more than a few times – I guess I must have crossed the YWN line.
minyan galMemberThe only added decor to my car is the handicapped parking permit hanging from the rear view mirror. Because I am so short it does not obscure my vision in the least bit. I also have a sun roof – does that count as an added decoration? I have never put a bumper sticker on (although I have seen many that I like) because they are so hard to remove.
minyan galMemberHealth: I just had depo medrol injections to both thumbs – check the Limericks thread for my “adventures in smoking” with Xylocaine in the thumbs.
minyan galMemberThis should gladden Health’s heart.
While driving home just now, a ciggie I did crave
But because my thumbs are frozen they just would not behave
I could not flick my Bic
I thought it was some trick
But the frozen thumbs won out and that Bic, it did me daunt.
minyan galMemberHealth – thanks for the info. I think that low dose Chantix and the patch together would probably help me. However, on the Canadian news on Tuesday, they said that a new, popular medication for smoking cessation (I presume Chantix) has shown to be dangerous in some cases and to tune in to the 11:00PM news for full details. Of course, I fell asleep and haven’t seen anything in the newspaper. Think I shall check the TV network’s website and see if there is any info there. Thanks for you interest.
July 6, 2011 7:31 pm at 7:31 pm in reply to: Many attempts were made for the Kallah. How would you proceed? #791222minyan galMemberThe phrase “professional shadchan) has often been used in this thread. Is there a special training course to become a shadchan and if not, does a person just decide that is what they wish to do? It seems to me that a background in psychology or social work or some type of counselling would be advantageous to someone in this field of work.
minyan galMemberDear Dr. Oomis:
Your diagnosis is absolutely correct. It started about 5 years ago and I saw a plastic surgeon who put me on the waiting list for surgery (one hand at a time). In the meantime, I saw my rheumatologist and told him about it. He said that I should try injections first. He injected both of my thumbs and that was the end of the pain and the problem. About a month ago, I woke up and both of my thumbs were sore again. I had a routine appointment with the rheum a couple of weeks later and he said he will inject again. I have had a couple of episodes similar to what you described – almost like a charley horse. I looked back in my old appointment books and found that the injections he gave me were almost 5 years ago. So, hopefully these cortisone shots will last as long as the last ones – then I consider myself getting off very lucky. As I recall, the last ones weren’t too too bad. At least when I am driving home the thumbs will be frozen. However, I do have a meeting to go to tonight and I hope I can make it. Anyway, thank you so much for your good wishes. I really don’t need to worry about Shabbat – my freezer holds a treasure trove of goodies – I even have a spare challah in there and I made a yummy soup yesterday – I really doctored up the Manischewitz split pea soup mix with fresh basil and parsley from my balcony garden and a bunch of other veggies. Well, it is time to leave for the doc’s office. Hopefully, I will be able to type tomorrow and I shall update you. I really appreciate your concern.
minyan galMemberI thought I’d write a limerick today
For tomorrow it seems that I may
Just not be able
To have hands on the table
Injections to both thumbs on the way.
This week it is Parsha Balak
By Friday I may have hazak
For Shabbat to make
Or I’ll just need a break
So everyone please wish me luck.
minyan galMemberMany things are just as common in the Jewish community as in the general community at large – they are just not spoken of or covered up. Drug addiction and alcoholism are very common, but you don’t often hear of it. I remember at least 20 years ago during the sermon on Yom Kippur, the Rabbi was talking about just this topic and then in a loud voice (I actually almost levitated from my seat) he said “I am sick and tired of visiting my congregants in the hospital who are there for alcoholism – the statistics would shock you.” So, why should the incidence of child abuse be any different?
minyan galMemberHealth – where I live, there is no such thing as addiction therapy for smoking. I have even phoned to find out why there are inpatient beds available for drug and alcohol treatment, but not for smoking. I don’t know what you mean about Chantix and nicotine replacement. The Chantix instructions clearly state that a patient may not use any type of nicotine replacement while taking the medication. As for the patch, I can use that but cannot use the gum because of dental difficulties.
minyan galMemberSome people cannot even be “put under” with hypnotism. I am one of them. The hypnotist, who was an MD, tried for over an hour and I was wide awake. My own doctor (an associate of the hypnotist) told me afterward that he didn’t think it would work for me. They were trying to use this method for pain control, not smoking. I have tried several methods to quit smoking and nothing has worked. I did manage to quit for 3 months using the patch, but stupidly started again. I have tried the anti-depressant used for quiting – cannot remember the name, patches and Chantix. The Chantix did take away the urge to smoke. The urge was reduced during the second week of taking it – when the dosage increases and you are no longer supposed to smoke. However, the side effects for me were severe nausea and vomiting (on the higher dose) and the anti-nausea medication didn’t help. My doctor told me to quit taking the Chantix because he was afraid I would start to lose weight and because I am underweight, I cannot afford this. I think I shall talk to him again about trying it with a different anti-nausea medication. I do know a few people that were able to quit quite easily with the Chantix. I also know a few people who were successful in quiting smoking using a method called soft laser. I don’t know anything about it. The most important thing is that you really, really, really, really want to quit.
minyan galMemberRadishes : thanks for answering my question. I am sorry that you are not able to pursue your chosen field. You certainly picked one of the most physically taxing fields in all of medicine – general surgery. If I am not mistaken, the only other field of medical studies that is more physical would be orthopedics. I hope that one day you will be able to practice in some field of medicine. I know how difficult it is to have to give up something that you love. I was an RN with a highly successful career who was forced to give up practicing due to health problems, so I certainly can identify with you (at least on some points). BTW, when I read your post on the smoking topic, it sounded to me as if you were a daily smoker. I doubt that the occasional cigar will be much of a problem. If I could smoke just the occasional cigarette, I would be a very happy camper.
minyan galMemberbombmaniac: Is it a coffee flavoured liquour that you want or an Irish whiskey flavoured liquour that you want? Or…are you looking for both? Baileys is definitely an Irish whiskey based product, while Kahlua is coffee based. BTW – I have a recipe for homemade coffee liquour which is very easy and extremely tasty. It is made with instant coffee granules, sugar and vodka (I think). I have made it before and it is great. If you want the recipe, let me know. If you make your own there is no problem with the hechsher.
minyan galMemberI know this is off topic – I went back into the archives to search for the “Smoking” thread from the other day but can’t find it. This message is addressed to “Basket of Radishes”. You say that you are a physician. I would love to know what type – chiropractor, MD, osteopath, naturopath, etc. because no MD that I know would say that smoking a pipe or a cigar is safe.
minyan galMemberKshmo: you certainly ARE a piece of work! Love your answer – I am sitting here laughing out loud.
minyan galMemberkapusta: that is how I make my mohn cookies. I converted the traditional recipe to and “icebox” recipe. One recipe of my cookies will make 4 rolls. I can cut them frozen and dip them in sugar (if I wish – they are already quite sweet). They are one of my favorite cookies and certainly the best mohn cookie recipe there is. If anyone wants the recipe, just let me know.
minyan galMemberI have an extremely old Motorola flip phone. It does not take pix, it does connect to the internet and it does not text. I simply makes phone calls. I would get a newer, smaller phone if I could get one without all of the bells and whistles. I never have my phone turned on – I only turn it on if I need to make a phone call. It is a prepaid phone and I use the least expensive plan which is 100.00 card that is good for one year. Any unused time is then carried forward to the next year. I usually have at least 50.00 worth of airtime left over at the end of each year. The battery is amazing and I recharge it about every 2 months. My carrier is Rogers (Canada).
minyan galMemberbombmaniac: I realize that you want an Irish whiskey liqueur, but does it HAVE to be Baileys? I believe that there are other Irish whiskey liqueurs available – you would have to check them for a hechsher. As an example, I have had other brands of coffee liqueurs besides Tia Maria and Kahlua and cannot tell the difference. Of course, I am not a real conniseur (sp??) on any alcoholic product. The last “drink” that I had was a Black Russian at my oldest grandson’s Bar Mitzvah and he is now past 18 years old (aside from some Manishchewitz on Friday nights – even that is usually Kedem grape juice)
minyan galMember“how I would know which silver dealers are reputable”
You could do a web search on the business (there are often online reviews) and you can also check with the Better Business Bureau if they have had any complaints about the business.
minyan galMemberWhen the Chabad shlichim come to my city every summer to assist with the Summer Yeshiva, they often play basketball at the JCC – with their tzitziot on.
minyan galMemberMany years when the email about the Neiman Marcus cookies was in circulation, I did try the recipe. It was excellent, but it was a huge recipe. If you don’t wish to stand and bake cookies for several hours, I suggest you make half a recipe – at least the first time that you try it.
minyan galMemberAre you sure that they are sterling silver? Chances are that most of what you have is silver plated. Trays and fruit bowls made of sterling silver would cost in the thousands of dollars. Good silver plate could make you some money – you could sell it on ebay or take it to an antique dealer or an auction. If you want to sell it on ebay, you will have to list it along with its hallmark – the markings on the bottom of the item.
minyan galMemberWolf – I am with you. Most people in my family know who I am. Of course, they have no idea what The Yeshiva World News Coffee Room is.
July 4, 2011 9:54 pm at 9:54 pm in reply to: Eidah Chareidis Chulent Ban – a question of hechsherim #783055minyan galMemberDerech Hamelech: you said: Personally I have a big taiva to start smoking again but don’t because the Rabbonim say its assur. I’m sure there are tons of people that feel the same way.”
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have never thought about it this way. What you said may be just the thing that I need to hear to enable me to quit smoking. I know all the health risks (who doesn’t, these days??) and am very angry with myself for allowing such a tiny object to exert so much control over my life. I have never given much thought to the religious aspect, even though I remember that my former rabbi A’H” quit over 35 years ago – as soon as the health risks became widely known. He told me that the reason that he quit had to with halacha. I had completely forgotten that. Now, I shall try to quit once again. Thanks for jogging my memory.
minyan galMemberhappiest: Bravo to you for researching and posting this topic. Abuse ruins many lives and we cannot afford to lose one Jewish soul. It seems to be an idea from my Baba’s time that we must not report anything illegal done by a fellow Jew. In those days, things were whispered although most of the time, they were completely hushed up. Nothing bad was talked about – I remember when the diagnosis of cancer was whispered about and then, it was only referred to as “C”. We are in the 21st century and we must teach our children to be careful and what to do if they feel that they have been violated – in any fashion. Better to over-report than under-report or not report at all.
basket of radishes: I also agree with you that everything that isn’t antisemitic should be published. We have a lot to learn from each other, regardless of our Jewish background and type of Judaism that we practice (or don’t practice). I, for one, would love to hear from some non-practicing Jews and find out why they feel as they do. I would particularly love to hear from formerly frum Jews and find out why they chose the path they did.
minyan galMemberOomis:
I agree with you there, my friend
But I think that in the end
We must learn of each other
Not fight brother to brother
That is no way our fences to mend.
minyan galMemberMany people who are not “pretty” in the classical sense, still manage to be “head turners”. I believe it is a combination of their usually, outgoing, personality, their knack of innately knowing what clothing looks well on them, the way they carry themselves and their over all self-confidence. I have known many woman like this and the best way that I can describe them is “glamorous” .
minyan galMemberOomis:
I think they deleted my post
Because what I talked of the most
Was my Conservative shul
With its much different rules
Than those of our moderator/host.
minyan galMemberDo the mods ever consult each other if they are unsure whether or not to edit or delete a post or a thread? Just wondering.
minyan galMember“beauty is in teh (sic) eyes of the beer-holder “
True – if you drink enough beer, everyone will be beautiful.
minyan galMemberI have the JPS English/Hebrew Tanach. I purchased it a couple of years ago for a course that I was taking – it was one of the required textbooks. The one that I bought is very small and was easy for me to transport back and forth to class. I haven’t compared the translations from this Tanach to any other, but I find it highly readable and the translations make sense to me.
minyan galMemberThe best things that I have found in very recent years are the joys of attending shul and Shabbat. Along the way, I made a whole new circle of wonderful friends. What could be better to have in one’s life but shul, Shabbat and friends. Oh, and of course, Torah.
ICOT: I know you are looking for more “tangible” items. I shall stimulate my memory over the weekend and post again – with the topic you intended. Shabbat Shalom.
minyan galMemberAfter reading the thread called “shhhhhhhhhh”, I think it would be great if their were a forum specifically for teenagers. Any opinions???? Shabbat Shalom to everyone.
minyan galMemberMore nosy questions –
Do all the Mods live in the New York area?
How did you get the postion of Mod – was it advertised in a section YWNews?
How many hours per week do you work at modding?
Is modding a full time job?
minyan galMemberIts Friday – again Shabbat’s here
The best day of the week, that is clear
Its Rosh Chodesh Tammuz
So in Shul please don’t shmooz
During Kiddush there will be time for cheer.
minyan galMemberOomis, thank you so much. I wrote you a nice response yesterday, which, for some reason, the Mods declined to print. It certainly wasn’t offensive.
minyan galMemberWhat kind of a job do you have that you have enough time on your hands to get bored?
minyan galMember“I got insulted once when someone said “wow you don’t even look pregnant” and i was standing there 8 or 9 months pregnant and she had just seen me in the pool in a bathing suit????!!!!”
Things can always be worse – like when someone asks when your due date is and you are NOT pregnant.
When I was an ER nurse, I asked a woman how old her father (the patien) was and she said “he is my husband.” I also asked a woman how old her grandchild was…..and she was the mother. Then I finally smartened up and began asking “what relationship are you?” I figured I couldn’t make any more boo boos that way.
minyan galMemberI have always maintained that when service personnel say “how are you?”, they really don’t care – it has just become part of today’s colloquial conversation. I could say this is also true of being asked this by acquaintances, as well. They really don’t want to know. One day I would love to have the nerve to REALLY answer the question, for example “Well, my back is really sore today and they have changed my medication. Also my bank phoned to say they are foreclosing on my mortgage, so we will all be out on the street.” I wonder what the stunned reponse would be or, in fact, if the person had even heard what I said because the expected reply of “just fine thanks”, was not forthcoming. Popa, why don’t you try that one day and see what happens? “Have a nice day.” (another phrase that drives me batty). In fact, there are a few expressions that irritate me. When a waitress calls me “sugar” or “honey” I want to toss the coffee in their faces. Recently I was at a hospital for an IV infusion and they were having a lot of trouble establishing the IV (in fact they never did get it going because after the fifth jab, I called the whole thing off). A very young nurse kept calling me “sweetie” till I finally barked at her “you may call me Jane or you may call me Mrs. Doe, but stop calling me sweetie. I am not your sweetie – you don’t even know me and I am old enough to be your grandmother.” That was the last that I saw of her.
