Ask your musician. They usually have suggestions. And if you ask him about Bilvali or whatever, he should be able to get you a sample.

I think his question was a legitimate follow up to the gemara that says blind people get married with tevias ayin of kol, and a deaf person can not hear and recognize that kol, how would he manage?

The marriage itself wouldn’t be the problem. The problem would be the potential violation of issurim down the road if one can not identify the person he/she is with.

Light bright: Listen to your own preaching. Did you first ask how come no one else knows how to do Avodas Hashem properly? And then followed with please remember that this is a lashon hara free zone in your response.

I know this will never get approved. But this is classic Chabad debate tactics.

Perhaps Rav Dovid Yosef is biased by his Sephardic traditions to observe 33 days of mourning and not to end the aveilus until the 34th of the Omer.

My youngest sister is 7 years older than my oldest daughter. When my youngest sister went to seminary in Israel, cellphones were forbidden. When my oldest daughter went, they were optional. When my 2nd daughter went, they were obligatory. When my 3rd daughter went, the school actually gave out the phones. (if you didn’t already bring one.)

Don’t have time to read the whole thing. But a number people here are confusing Hilchos Aveilus with establishing a Yom Hazikaron. There is no Yom Hazikaron in Nissan for Rabbi Akiva’s talmidim. Only a general (pretty light version of) aveilus; hence the beard stubble.
The taanis of 20 Sivan was established in those communities, and was not meant for Klal Yisroel as a whole. As are similar memorials such as 20 Tammuz in Telshe, events like 21 Kislev in Satmar in others. Any specific individual or community has a right if not obligation to mark its own personal tzaros and yeshuos for its own hisorerus. (See last Perek in Maseches Brachos.) One can (perhaps should) establish a fast when he has yahrtzeit for a parent, however that does not override issurei Taanis, such as Chodesh Nissan.
We do not make special azkaros for the entire nation except 9 Av. That cheapens the true azkara of the source of all our Tazros. All Tzaros are sourced in the big Golus for which we have Tisha B’av. See Rashi in Divrei Hayamim II perek 23 or so, on the possuk Vayekonen Yirmiyahu al Yoshiyahu.

Yekke: Don’t have a gemara Zevachim with me right to check what you’re referring to, but there is an expression used several times that says Kohanim nohagu silsul b’atzmam, meaning that they took it as a personal affront if a zar would grab their opportunity. But that is not halacha, just a group of people guarding their turf, so to speak.

Didn’t read all the comments. Just want to point out something in the OP. Slaughtering the sacrifices is actually one avoda that can be done by a non Kohen. The requirement of Kohen on animal sacrifices (with a few exceptions, including Avodas Yom Kippur, Parah Aduma -which isn’t really an avoda) only begins at the next stage. Shechita kesheira b’zar; mikabala v’eilach mitzvas kehuna.

The serugah people can not have it both ways. Some of them put it on as a symbolic statement of sorts, then demand that you recognize no inherent difference.

Someone once went to Rav Shteinman and showed him two Yarmulkes, one regular black velvet and the other seruga. He asked if there is any difference. Rav Shteinman replied that there is no difference. The fellow then complained, “My son’s school wants to expel him for wearing the seruga!” Rav Shteinman responded, “So if there’s no difference, why doesn’t he just wear the black one?”

Over the years, I’ve noted that invariably a topic involving either Israel, Zionism or both, will pop up. Like clockwork, the same arguments, pro and con, get regurgitated.

So, here is my question to the pro posters: why do you respond?

    A. The lesschumras, Avi Ks, and rabbiofberlins are entitled to their opinions

    B. Their beliefs on this subject are strongly held and, as has been amply demonstrated ove time, will not be changed

    C. Responding to their points invariably sinks to an unhealthy level of tit-for-tat.

My suggestion: simply do not respond. If no argument is made, the topic dries up . Responding only generates sinas chinam from both sides. By the way, this would also apply to the anti posters. If you don’t take the bait on a provocative pto post, they’ll go away as well

How many ways is the assumption wrong?

Shmitta deals with chovos. Nothing to do with status of Eved Ivri. He goes free at Yovel, not Shmitta. The only chovos that are eliminated are those with collection pending. An eved who is sold to pay the debt, the debt is settled with the purchase money. There is no further collection. He then has to serve out the term of his avdus, which is 6 years, regardless of when in a shmitta cycle it falls. A loan with mashkon is exempted for this same reason. It is not collection as much as it is trading payment to get your collateral back.

Lions never shoot at other lions because they are too stupid to figure out how. Because they don’t have sechel. Because they are not tzelem Elokim. They are not not-shooting because of some sense of fair play. If they could figure out how, you bet they would.

The fact that there is on outrage over this lion and not over any other hunting ‘victim,’ is due to having associated personality and near human dignity to it. That is a serious example of how the priorities in this world are so out of order.

Not saying that hunting is proper. I agree with those before who said that it is not. But this is not about hunting, or it would’ve been all over the news any one of the hundreds or thousands of other times it has happened. This is about elevating an animal to quasi human status.

As an aside, research shows that this lion earned its position in a fight between he and his brother against a lion who had the position before. His brother (Leander) was killed by that other lion (Mpofu). Mpofu had his leg broken in that fight, and was put down. Not such a sweet little Babmi, our friend Cecil. Live by the sword, die by the sword. Or as Rabban Gamliel put it, “Al d’atfeich atfuch, etc.”

Agreed with DY that the klal about RM vs. RY is halacha related. But it is even more than that. Rishonim say the reason we don’t pasken like RM is because he was so smart, and we are not capable of discerning when he is offering a halachic argument defending the position he holds to be accurate, or when he is arguing the opposite side, playing a form of “devil’s advocate.” If we would be smart enough to know which arguments he held to be halachically valid, not counter, then we would pasken that way, even if we didn’t understand.

Rav Yitzchok Zilberstein discusses almost exactly this shayla in his newest sefer, Chashukei Chemed-Nedarim. The shayla presented was a little different. A wedding photographer put up a pic of a chosson whose wedding he had photographed in his shop as an example of his work. The chosson felt embarrassed and wanted the pic taken down.

Much of what is discussed is ownership of pix at events like weddings. Of course the photographer may have a stronger contractual baalus on pix than a random dude with a smartphone. RYZ does discuss in general terms as well, not just the professional.

Mrs. Syag: What RALS was saying is that there is nothing inherently different between the two. But there is something hugely symbolic. The father was trying to score a point by pointing out the inherent similarity and ignoring the symbolic difference. RALS, is a very soft and cute way, called him out on the hypocrisy.

On the second matter, we are also excited and hopeful about the new plans. However, I am not sure what you mean exactly. I was not aware that you had “Material” that she was planning on “servicing.” Maybe things grow when you’re not looking. I guess I just know of your larger merchandise, not the smaller variety.

Someone recently brought his son to R’ Ahron Leib. He held two yarmulkes in his hand, one black velvet, the other seruga. He asked R Ahron Leib, “Is there any difference between these two?”

    R AL responded, “No difference.”

The father then said, “Well if they’re the same, then is it fair that my son just got thrown out of his yeshiva because he wore the seruga?”

R’ Ahron Leib responded, “If they’re the same, why can’t he wear the black one?”
